I was asked by a mate (Growlergod on LAF) if I could build him a couple of houses for his Maulfaux Goblins. The idea being they live in some sort of American South style swamp. Specifically he was looking for two houses and a pig sty. These were the ideas I drew up for him.....

Pig sty with pig catcher and subduer...

And WIP of the first house. The blue thing will be a swamp tree sculpted from GS and there will be rope railings on the bridge up...

Cute - the details add a lot of character already.
-
Love it. I have a bunch of trees I did for this same purpose, one day I'll get back to it and make the buildings :)
-
oooooooooooooo :-*
-
Very nice so far. Looking forward to seeing how they develop.

Very nice ideas. :)

Beeootiful. :D. Can't wait to see it done.

Ohhhhh yes.

Nice building :)

Lookin' really good!

Really liking that. Can't wait to see them finished :-*
-
The concept is simply great. But the execution.... Woooo :o :o :-* :-*
-
Great start. Will be nice to follow this.
Maybe some Bayourks from warploque miniatures could fit in ? :)

Stop spoiling us, Andy! :-*

What do you use for the terrain bases by the way? I've been trying to find something new that can be easily cut, but doesn't cost me a small fortune after a while (ie Plastic Card).
-
I will be watching this closely I love it!
-
Cheers for the very kind words gents!!!

I've started using hardboard recently bud. I've got a sheet of it in the house that I cut a base from anytime I begin a new model. I like the weighty-ness of it AND it doesn't warp. If you go to B&Q you can often pick up the cheap off cuts as well.
-
AND it doesn't warp.
It most certainly can warp, I have several pieces to attest for that. It takes very well to the PVA newspaper straightening method though.
-
Looking great already :-*

yup really nice

These are very fine looking dwellings. I'm very keen to see the finished product!

Regarding basing material I would like to suggest 3mm foam pvc. It can be easily cut with a craft knife or Stanley blade and, despite it's thinness, does not warp no matter how much watered-down PVA you slosh on it (it ain't porous, see?). Check ebay where you can pick up single A4 sheets for £1 (plus postage). I've been using it for a couple of years now and have based some serious terrain on it (including a three-storey resin tower) with no problems whatsoever. I recommend everyone gives it a try!

Interesting! I'll have to check it out :) Thanks for the tip!

same for me. The only cons is the glue: PVA glue doesn't grip properly on the foamed pvc, some drops of cyanacrilic might be appropriate.
-
I reckon that my deathmix of some sand, PVA and filler will do the job. It's sturdy as concrete when dry :)

It just needs a key. If you scratch the surface first (craft blade or easier 60 grit sandpaper) PVA will bond to it without any difficulty, both alone and as a basis for terrain mix pastes.
-
Great scratch-builds - I really love the originality of the designs.
I look forward to seeing them finished.

As a Fan of both Goblins & Malifaux, I love what you're doing & will follow your progress avidly. Keep up the FINE WORK!

Great stuff, Andy!

Watching with interest.

TBH I've never had issues with bonding. Perhaps because I don't water my PVA down too much...?
Apologies to Andy for somewhat derailing this thread: let's see some more goblin domiciles, please!

Good to hear, Funghy :)
Sorry Andy ;)

I can't say that's ever happened to me. Was that on some bigger pieces Dean? I'll need to try the foam PVC method.
Thanks again chaps for your very nice comments!! Real works been REALLY busy, so there hasn't been much progress yet! Sorry!
-
Love the sculpting on the dead tree - these are looking great!
-
The dead tree hopefully won't look dead when I'm finished. I plan to hide the wires with a big bit of foliage to make it look like a drooping swamp tree. I meant to take a pic before I started undercoating! I totally forgot! Doh!! The mix of white/black undercoat was only because I ran out of the black halfway through....

I managed to finish the pig sty. Easiest one first and all that...

I don't think it really shows up in the photos, but the brown part inside the pen has been gloss varnished so that, hopefully, it looks like mud....

Ooooh!
Now that is purdy!
:-* :-* :-*
Looking forward to the shack seeing some paint.
:D
-
splendid paintjob! :D
-
Dead sexy.
-
Great stuff. :)
-
Gorgeous stuff Andy! :D
-
Really nice Andy. The under coated house looks like sold black and white movie. I actually really like it just like that!!
The pig sty is great. I do wonder if it might look muddier with a gloss over the top of it? Better than anything I've done though :D
-
Fantastic :-* Can I swipe your idea's? ;)
-
Lookin' good so far!

Really, really nice matey :-* :-*
Your groundwork is cracking 8)
cheers

I'm a big fan of Malifaux, and I was just talking with a friend about the style of buildings he envisioned the gremlins building. As he plays gremlins I figured his vision should be the one we go with. His thoughts were exactly what you've started building here.
Fantastic.

It is also a very common sign material, so check with a sign shop to see if they will sell you the offcuts from fabrication.

It's been a wee while, but I've finally finished my one of the houses for my mate. I'm not happy with the tree! :( I don't think it worked that well! If I was to do it again, I think the green sponge I used would need to be painted black or dark green first before the foliage goes on!! :'(

Lovely work :-*
-
Wow, this is a piece of art.
-
Mate, she's come up very nice. The green on the tree works too. The colours in the Florida swamps display a huge amount of "weird" colours.
-
Love the colours and the overall effect matey :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
EXCELLENT! You really captured the Malifaux look SPLENDIDLY. I hope you remember to take a Group Shot before giving them to your friend. GREAT WORK!
-
Excellent work, I'm very jealous! My Gremlins don't have any homes to go to!
-
Aw, I missed this first time round so I'm very happy you've posted something else to it! As always your work is awesome. I like the tree!
-
Wow, you have my admiration. Absolutely wonderful. :-*
-
Stunning, love the detail that is there. Colours of the roof shingles is tremendous.
-
Loving these - any chance we can see with figures in situ?
-
Oh, Yes!
8)
Loving that roof and the rickety 'bridge'.
:-* :-*
-
Top work as usual Andy. Well done :)
-
Amazing as usual! (That's almost an oxymoron!)
-
Photobucket links repaired.
-
Wow, never seen those before and they look great
-
Lovely work! :D
-
Great stuff! I love all the vegetation around the house, and even my wife thought the skewed chimney was a nice touch. Keep up the good work.
But you know what? I'm going to try to challenge you on the swamp house theme. I've just finished a GW laketown house and a scratchbuilt house, and I'm planning a swamp village around them. Your work is very inspiring and I'm going to see how much further I can take it.
-
Thanks gents! I'm glad it's useful!
Phil-I look forward to see what you do! If I was to do it again, I would use more natural elements to build it. Maybe small twigs and branches from the back garden to make the trees. And I'd also find something different for the canopy! Looking back I think I could do it better! :?

You should have some sort of official commendation for your work with restoring LAF to it's former glory.

I just don't like seeing one of my favourite places to visit on the web take a hit because of Photobucket! I like being able to browse people's old threads for help or inspiration. I just hope some of the stuff I've dug up again is some use to somebody!
In all honesty, it's nice going through some of my own threads just to see what I've built over the years. My poor old memory isn't what it used to be! o_o
