Title: Right, that's torn it, Pulp Alley
Post by: H.M.Stanley on 14 May 2013, 09:39:58 AM
I've been thinking about doing Pulp games for some time now and couldn't decide whether i wanted to try Horror, Gangsters, VSF, Steam Punk etc. Sci-fi isn't really my thing so ...

... the more i look at Pulp Alley the more i like it

Where can i get the Pulp Alley (and cards) rules in the UK? Triples is this wkd, is any of the dealers likely to be carrying it?

I saw that. But what do you do about the cards? Or are they part of the PDF?

Many thanks

Getting the cards from their online store is the better way to go. They're delivered super fast, (I'm in Australia) and the quality is top notch.

See my post... ;)

They arrived,..wow that was fast.« 1 2 »

Our Fortune Decks are really nice but you can also check out a thread I made to easily make your own quick Pulp Alley Fortune Deck. Dad had me make hundreds of decks during playtesting so I've got it down. lol Sadly, these ones won't come in color and in a nice plastic box.

Some of the guys in the club are already interested and one has said that he's doing Mobsters.

I'd like to "theme" new Leagues around this period if possible (trying to be as inclusive as possible). The genre is so wide though its difficult to know where to begin. Off the top i can think of:

1. Other Mobsters
2. Private Detective (and friends)
3. Cops
4. Street toughs
5. Chinatown
6. The Shadow ....

There must be all sorts that i'm missing

Thanks

The local museum has an Egyptian, Aztec, Dinosaur display that goes wrong...., has a rare diamond

Professor at the university has an accident, invents robots, mutates animals, etc

German spies try to infiltrate a group, irradiate the local bullion centre, or spread fake money.

FBI and IRS arrive in town

National Guard come in to sort out Organised crime or goes rogue

Batman?

Alien invasion

Trouble at the docks, merchant seamen, USN, dodgy cargoes

It looks like a labour of love trying to put the Green Hornet League together. Start with Bob Murch's leaping masked crime-fighter from the Agents of Justice (and paint him green)

http://pulpfigures.com/products/category/11

Find a suitable Kato figure, look for a female photographer ...  :)

In the meantime, i'll look to do something which i can put together easily. Cultists you say ...?

The beauty of Pulp is you can use all sorts of minis - I would never have found a use for the Copplestone Dare to Die otherwise

and that would be a shame  ... as they are such characterful sculpts

and I think that puts pulp into a category - characterful

all sorts, all types, and "periods" you wouldn't normally think of gaming

and it helps you only need a handful for PA

have fun

I'm going to start with the Copplestone O'Hare Boys & Street Toughs assuming my head isn't turned at Triples by Cultists etc.

Otherwise, i'm about to raid my painted projects to see what i can use and build a League from there. I just knew that those Armed Archaeologists were going to come in useful at some point

There really is so much to choose from, but existing collections are a good start. I "recruited" some early WW2 Soviets in winter gear from my Russo-Finnish collection to play the role of Soviet agents up to no good in the Arctic. Then all I've had to buy new are some Mounties and other good Canadian-looking types to help defend the Great White North against the tentacles of the Red Menace.

I hope to get things up and ready with photos soon...

Take a look of Bob Murch's Pulp Figures as well.  They go nicely with Copplestone, but you'll need a towel for the drool lol lol lol.....

I ordered the Pulp Alley cards last week and I have them now in my hands; they are a great quality product. The ruleset is also very nice and well written and I have begun to paint some figures from Pulp Figures, that are wondeful-pulp-characters.

So I´m immersed in a new (and, for me, totally different) project looking for ancient ruins terrain elements, cultists (of course!) and all sort of exotic beasts...

Boards/terrain - i have buildings etc to do adventures in Asia, Africa and (rural) Spain/Mexico ... but nothing  which would pass as 1920s urban Europe/USA.

However, inspiration has struck! [read: i probably saw someone do it on here and thought that i'd nick that idea at some point].

To capture the Pulp mood and in keeping with the 1920s gangster theme i'm going to try a plain black 3 x 3 board (to represent the floor plan of buildings) and then infill with tones of grey strips of varying lengths and widths to show the sidewalks and roads/alleys. Add circular pools of white/yellow (street lights) and triangular chinks of light (doorways in buildings) which could be a Plot points. Add a few crates and vehicles ....

What do you think chaps/chapesses?

I have painted up my first Leagues [well, added a few bandits to my existing figures] which, coincidentally, fit in well with my BoB project:

The Dog Meat General League - a vicious disposessed Chinese Warlord turned to banditry (is there a difference?), and

Big Frank's League - gentleman adventurer, war-hero, Cambridge explulee, soldier of fortune, inventor, raconteur ... Big Frank is all those things. Having made and lost a fortune in South America, Big Frank now turns his attention to China where he hopes to bend the turbulent times (192?) to his financial advantage

Photos to follow once i work out what attributes to fit to the figures.

I've not had chance to look at the rosters and can't get access to Yahoo sites  ... :(

I did however pick up the Copplestone Gangsters from Triples. I dallied briefly with the Artizan Cultists (but there was only multiples of the same pack) and Sleuths/Cops

Good call on altering the name of the ability to Martial Artist. In general, each Pulp Alley ability is intended to cover LOTS of ground. So players should always feel free to make a name that fits their own story/background.

There was even a time when we toyed with the idea of not giving titles to any of the abilities.  lol lol

A couple of the guys and I each bought a pack of Copplestone figures: Sleuths, Honest Citizens and Beat Cops.

So, with a bit of horse trading i now have the figures i was looking for; Sam Spade, Continental Detective, the District Attorney [citizen with briefcase] and two random cops

Those, with my two Swell Dames, should complete my 20/30s Gangster Leagues.

I now have my eye on some of North Star IHMN (soon to be released) Anarchists  ;)

Everytime I start to think of one league, it leads to another and another. If I built all my league ideas, I'd have to get another garage to store all the models in.

I've been thinking of finding someone to split packs with. I usually love one or two but don't have a use for all of them.
