Title: A Lady A Day for June (pg 8 Day 30- She Walks Alone)
Post by: Jevenkah on June 04, 2013, 02:43:08 AM
Since committing most of our crafting resources to our recent Fantasy Warriors Mania, we realized we weren't getting many minis painted! So I challenged Teshub to paint A Lady a Day (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/a-lady-a-day/) for me for the month of June.

Here are three shield maidens for the first 3 days, ready to set anyone straight on the subject of equal employment:

Hear, hear! Nice models. A model a day, that sounds like a cool idea. In two weeks a week of not-school related projects will be held in school: just fun and some time for the kids to just do what they like to do. I'm leading a tabletop painting project. That might be cool as a goal.

Day four of A Lady a Day (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/a-lady-a-day/) brings the completion of a Werner Klocke Female Prowler from the almost-defunct mega-minis.

And for a quick visual on the Proper Basing Method for our world:  :D

Thanks all for the feedback on the project!

Jevenkah with yet another great idea, A Lady A Day!

Why not? It's a great way to get those female figs on the tabletop and into action. And its been alot of fun so far...

Thanks for the kind words  everyone :)  I've seen of your work and coming from you all (artist level painters on this thread) those are some really encouraging compliments.

Thanks DeafNala! It's almost a surprise to me as well, since there are several ladies on the board and I don't know which one Teshub will pick up next.

It was a challenge to begin with just to find that many unpainted females in our collection that we liked. Once upon a time, when $2.50 USD was a lot for a fantasty fig, I was known to purchase any female than could slighty fit into our world. I even talked my husband into the controversial Ral Partha Slave Market, which will NOT be part of this thread. So we found both minis that we could use if we paint them, and minis I can sell to get more hobby money  :D

Thanks dijit and OLeary! It's a fun project!

Thanks Mason! That leggy thief caught our eyes once, but when we heard Mega-Minis was closing, we had to pick her up.

Great to hear all the comments and encouragement!
I was wondering what Dr. The Viking thought of the assassin's "base" on day 4 :)

See you a little later with Day 6- who will it be?

We come back to the sword sisters for DAY 6 of A Lady a Day (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/a-lady-a-day/) with their mounted compatriot:

She is dressed in what we have termed "Melgar Blue", that and white being the colors our main character Kvig Melgarson flies. (He's the third son which is why the color is named for his father and not him.)

One small critique: the eye could stand to have more contrast between the pale skin & the white of the eye. If you paint the area the eye will be in black, reddish brown, or a dark flesh shade; then paint the white within that area, leaving an outline of the darker color, you get a better definition for the eye...it's easier than it sounds.

Other than that, the Girl looks FINE! WELL DONE!

Yes, as I commented on another thread, it's chilling what the camera reveals. Your tip for the eyes is pretty much what we do, it's just that final dot of white that is sometimes the hardest! Then that leaks, and my husband has to line again, then he gets the dark flesh on the eyeball and he has to get the white again, and eventually he says "Sod it all, it's good enough!" Then his wife takes pictures that blow the miniature up to real-life human size and we go around again.  :o

Thanks for the helpful hint, it's a good one!

try this:

-paint the eye area white
-add vertical black stripes where the pupil shall be
-add two horizontal black stripes crossing the vertical ones
-trim eyes to desired size by narrowing the white with black horizontal
-paint dark flesh around the eyes, leave the lids black (only the upper lid for males)
-highlight flesh on cheeks, forehead and brows

The Dead (Wounded) Chick turned out VERY NICELY!. Casualty counters add a certain feel to a game...a touch of reality. FINE WORK!

I once was requested to do one of those three stage Ral Partha Adventurers for an erstwhile RPG acquaintance. SO, I made it a five stage piece by including a wounded version & skeletal remains...he was not amused.

VERY NICE! You achieved a greater depth of color, especially the skin tones. AND your eyes have more definition. GREAT WORK!

Another tip: don't apply the pupil as a dot; do a line from the top lash down.

For DAY 9 of A Lady a Day (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/a-lady-a-day/) a stately Viking woman graces us with her presence.

She is modeling a darker flesh about the eyes. We still have yet to try lines for pupils as suggested, but I think the tips we've applied are helping!

Here she is creating drama on her own, showcased with existing paints of Viking women from 3 different companies, and because OLeary wanted to see commoners:

You're not going to believe this, but in our monthly sword & sorcery game that figure plays the role of the King's Betrothed, Inga, who is our "Helen of Gautria". She's daughter of one of two most powerful jarls, Storolf, in the kingdom, who himself is the strongest ally of our PC, Jarl Kvig. Inga has another PC, the champion Bleddyn, chasing her skirts, and almost got him caught *ehhem* in the mead hall. While Kvig is trying to keep Storolf's daughter away from Bleddyn, we highly suspect Kvig of wanting to present his own case for Inga's hand.

Great minds and all that!

Day 10 of A Lady a Day (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/a-lady-a-day/) is a day to celebrate! The LAF has brought Teshub and me loads of inspiration.  :-* Last week, it brought a gift of lead from a new friend! :-* Today we present one of a beautiful set of Bronze Age Viking Women. They're 32mm, but in our 28+mm world, they look like strapping lasses, the kind of women one would want to fight next to.

Thank you Doomhippie! I have been informed that "Melgar Blue" will be undergoing a name change this summer, to reflect the whole clan, rather than just the Melgarsons. I'm game.

The mini-a-day I pretty much ripped from the Ancients painting club idea. It sounded like a great way to get some of our ladies off the tray and onto the table. It's been brilliant too! We have, maybe not a lot, but several, women that have spent too long unpainted. Now they are seeing the light.

We have two more Gripping Beast viking women for A Lady a Day (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/a-lady-a-day/) , and that will complete the set! After all this time.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement and critiques!

David does make some lovely miniatures; AND, like yourself, each new creation is better than the ones before. VERY WELL DONE!

From the differences in attire, I'd say the Barbarian Babes I got from Bronze Age a couple of years ago must inhabit a warmer clime.

Wow, I'm barely keeping the blogging up with the painting! DAY 11 of A Lady a Day (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/a-lady-a-day/) is another of the Gripping Beast Viking women, as promised. One of the things we loved about this set was the variation in body types in the women. Compare today's woman with DAY 9 on pg 2 for example. Great diversity, eh?

I admire the 'one a day' approach, which is coming along really well.
Some nice sculpts getting some good paintwork.

Please do something with the bases, though.
Even if you wait until you have finished, as a nice base will really bring these Ladies to the next level.

Thanks, Mason! We have a group of 13-yr-old girls that play, they are incredibly excited to see all these Ladies getting painted.

Speaking of 13-yr-olds and basing...we have a hard enough time keeping shields on guys. Grass would never hold up. The minis get moved by many different hands, some underage and unawares, some of age and slightly tipsy, and some with really big thumbs. (I'm not making that up; we had to limit him to only moving the outside minis to mark his forces and then Teshub and I filled in the rest of the units when we played Fantasty Warriors .)

I completely agree with you re: basing if I were using these exclusively as display pieces, but they are played with quite a lot and need to be flexible in their use. In various adventures that same figure could be outside on a grassy field, or on a battlement, or in a longboat. So the small, relatively uniform bases can have landscape pieces designed for them with just the right flat spots for a single scout, or a small group. Same goes for the size of our stone castle walls, towers and staircases. Our game is very free-flowing and the scenery is modular to accommodate it. The players control the story, so Teshub has to be ready for anything. It's a game that stretches the potential of models and minis and when we come to a situation we can't model, we figure out a new way to do it.

I see your point about leveling up the figures, but it's just not what we need for our tabletop (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=53552.0).

I do thank you for the tip!

I have noticed that each new Girl on the block becomes my favorite in the Group. Either I'm developing a fondness for your painting style or you are improving on a daily basis...both is another possibility. Yet again, VERY WELL DONE!

While I'm a bit of a fanatic on bases, what you do with them is dictated by how arduous an existence they are destined to lead. Under the best of conditions, gamers tend to be ham fisted oafs; younger gamers are enthusiastic to boot. If you ever decide to go fancy, I'm sure you can get lots of useful advice from most of us here...myself included.

Fair point on the bases, Jevenhah, I just thought that such lovely figures deserved them, that's all.

I can fully sypathise with the reasoning, as there is one particular member of out group who induces much holding of breath every time that he extends his hand towards the table.
He regularly impales parts of his anatomy on scenery too.

In fact, he is one of the reasons why I tend not to put anything too pointy sticking out of my scenery, after he once decided that his eye would benefit from having a 'ruined' roof joist stuck into it whilst attempting to see what could be seen by one of his miniatures!
 ;)

Thanks DeafNala! I just discovered the gallery feature of this site, so I'll be putting all the Ladies together there soon. Our style is distinctive, perhaps a bit cartoon-ish, but it seems to fit our world, terrain, and photos so well that I wouldn't have it any other way. Of course, there is always room to take that style to another level and Teshub has really stepped it up since joining the LAF a few years ago. This latest challenge has him trying new things I haven't seen him do before (especially eyes :) ). I have not painted nearly as often as he in this time; I am finding my own skills rusty. I'm painting pigs to get ready to paint a male viking so I can be ready to paint one of the Bronze Age Viking Women for this thread. I've never done a $7 mini before and I don't want to screw it up!

One of our players got a spear under the fingernail one time and lifted the whole figure off the table like that! It's good to know we're not the only group that happened to.

If I do ever work on display pieces I will definitely be asking around here for help/advice/inspiration on the bases. You all are a creative lot and the basing work I've seen is brilliant. It does add oomph.

Thanks again all!

(I'm still figuring out how to forward traffic from one to the other, though the content transfer was easy enough.)

Third, the final installment of Made With Minis Comics (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/comics/) "Lords of Timlin #3" will be out in a few hours! On the new site! With better viewing!

Day 13 of A Lady A Day (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/a-lady-a-day/) we think is an old Ral Partha. She has been in the lead mountain for a long time.

Now she has a role in our world as a warrior in the Grunevaldian (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/populations/nil-ith-horn/) army.

We use Crusader Minis Byzantines for the male soldiers; she sizes up quite well!

Day 14's Lady A Day (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/a-lady-a-day/) is the last of our Gripping Beast Viking Women. She is plays an interesting old lady known as Crafty Kate in our RPG. Our champion Bleddyn bought the inn he spent the winter living in, and she runs it for him. She also dabbles in potion-brewing. Crafty, that Kate.

Once again a very inspiring thread. The one-a-day idea is great and I am just about to post my one-a-day Norman Knights up on the Medieval thread.

So, which is now your official website? I think I still have your old Wordpress one listed in my bookmarks.

Keep up the magnificent work.

Once again a very inspiring thread. The one-a-day idea is great and I am just about to post my one-a-day Norman Knights up on the Medieval thread.

Thanks for the heads up on your project Little Odo! I have just started to expand my LAF boundaries; there's so much here to see! It's exciting to witness the creative processes of fellow gamers/painters in their own endeavors. I'm glad to hear you're so inspired!

As for the one-a-day on a theme approach, I'm pumped to have 15 new women on the table so far, most of which hadn't been touched in years! It'll be cool to wind up with a new collection at the end of the month.

So, which is now your official website? I think I still have your old Wordpress one listed in my bookmarks.

Thanks for asking about that, the official, up-to-date website is:

Please update your bookmarks. (I should have the original blog redirects taken care of this weekend.)

Haven't gotten around to it earlier, but figured I'd just chime in with the praise here! While paintjobs and bases are rather basic, they're more than table-top worthy and all very neat. Add to that the fact that you're painting minis that I myself own and look forward to painting only sweetens the offering further! =)

Most of all, I'm impressed with your perseverance! Keep on trucking!

Your last addition rests primed and ready in my cabinet, had her prepped for the LPL before I bailed out.

The Latest Lass has a lovely expression of almost ethereal wonder; it suggests innocence...or a lack of appreciation for the situation. VERY WELL DONE!

For moi, the minis have an attraction in that some I've never seen before & some are memories from long ago..."long ago" has a bittersweet quality to it.

DAY 16 of Lady A Day (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/a-lady-a-day/) is a cultist leader. I think she's a mid-1990s RAFM, but I'm not 100% sure. She is another example of a figure that might never have seen the light of a flash were it not for this challenge!

The Holy Babe turned out GREAT! Her several-sandwiches-shy-of-a-picnic expression is prefect for her calling; AND you do a SPLENDID job with your browns. TERRIFIC WORK!

She'd one of the Cthuhlu minis from RAFM that show three stages of the descent into madness...I bet you can guess her stage.

Too funny! The Blue Lady has lots of poise, perfect for the feminine ideal of Arthurian legend.

Haven't gotten around to it earlier, but figured I'd just chime in with the praise here! While paintjobs and bases are rather basic, they're more than table-top worthy and all very neat. Add to that the fact that you're painting minis that I myself own and look forward to painting only sweetens the offering further! =)

Thank you phreedh! It is neat seeing different interpretations of the same figure. I'm always enchanted to see how the character of the minis can change with the varied color choices and techniques of individual artists.

Our level is a tad over tabletop; I have to credit my husband Teshub's courage for letting me take and post close-ups of his work on these ladies. We both agreed it would be a bit boring for the viewers over the course of the month if I used my usual focal distance (I think that's the right term, I'm still reading up on a lot of photography). Some are destined for the greatness of being a main character, while others will be setting and atmosphere. They are all painted to be moved and look good on game night. Even the dead ones. :)

Most of all, I'm impressed with your perseverance! Keep on trucking!

Thanks! The day-after-day consistency has felt great on our end! It's not that we've never done a large-ish number before, but the theme and thus the variety of figures keeps Teshub fresh on this project.

I'm glad to see that this thread is continuing. The brushwork on these keeps getting better and better with each new Lady.

Hi OLeary! Thanks! Teshub used a few washes on the cultist; again it's the uniqueness of the figures that lets him throw fear out the window and practice painting with a different toolset.

Thanks DeafNala! I couldn't believe Teshub painted a new shade of brown! I and our players often point out all the browns on the table, then watch some good period piece, or take a walk outside and notice that there are a lot of browns in the world. It cracks me up now when he'll lean over with a mini and ask me what I think for a color to match this-or-that, and I reply, "Um, brown!"

Good to know our most recent lady's heritage. I'm starting to remember less and less of our mini acquisitions from that decade. Mostly because my brain is now storing all the info on modern manufacturers of long-ago figures.

Glad you're all still enjoying our Challenge!

Feeding Chickens, as I recall from my experiences as a boy long ago, is a job for Heroes/Heroines. Chickens are nasty, vicious Creatures that would be fierce Predators were it not for their incredible stupidity...to look into the eye of a Chicken is to peer into a pit of madness. Your latest Lady looks to have the stuff to face The Birds....attractive but with a no-nonsense look about her. VERY NICELY DONE!

Day 20 of A Lady A Day (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/a-lady-a-day/) is the last of a set of 5 that I gave my husband for his birthday a couple years ago. Something about her face (and maybe the skulls on the ground) suggested Sarah Connor to me. We don't play post-apocalyptic, but I figured she'll fit anywhere.

Bingo! Red for work, but also we're planning construction of this oft-mentioned inn and we wanted some of these characters to stand out in the photos.

We're happy to go tripping down memory lane with you  o_o . We've been thinking what a shame it's been to have all these ladies in waiting, instead of painted.

May be she has a Bag of Holding filled with all sorts of fabulous objects...or not.

I took our daughter to see the Harry Potter flicks and the first time Hermione brought out her purse, I leaned over to tell her what a Bag of Holding was. To which she replied, "Mom, they stole that from Doctor Who."  ;) I love my kids.

Mason, thanks for the compliments! Glad we could start more fires burning in your already blazing gaming mind.

Your project has got me into painting mode. Looking at the tally sheet for the combined Vaults of Pack Rattiness (mostly Capt. Your project has got me into painting mode. Looking at the tally sheet for the combined Vaults of Pack Rattiness (mostly Capt. John's stuff), I figure that if I were to do a mini a day, I'd have the last of the pieces painted up in 40 years...that should give me enough time to sort out what will be next on the schedule.

Our daughter let us know if you had painted a figure a day for the last 40 years, you'd have a smothering collection!

re: Babes with Big Axes: I'm glad we could do these justice as they are gorgeous minis. They have such highly expressive faces and real sense of movement.

re: Ensemble shots: We couldn't resist the execution vignette either. Of the 10 figures in the picture, 6 of them are A Lady A Day (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/a-lady-a-day/). We are planning a group shot of the month's work. I love playing with lots of minis!

re: The General Theme Idea: A focus to target an area that was a bit lacking in figures was just what we needed. This has also helped us see exactly how we could paint up armies for large-scale battles in not-as-much-time as we thought.

Thanks for all the compliments folks!

It's even worse than that. Last January marked fifty years of Mini Madness...minus a bit of time as L.B.J's Ultimate Weapon. AND, until recently, a mini a day would be a lost day. My record was a brigade of Napoleonic Austrian Line Infantry: 240 musketeers & 24 Grenadiers with standards & mounted officers in 10 days...living on reds, vitamin C, & coffee (cocaine wasn't my thing).
Most of my stuff was given away or sold or done on commission; SO I have about 400 or so minis that are mine...until someone else wants them. My friend & house partner, Captain John, has a display cabinet filled with minis I've done for him over the last 20 years; he figures there are around 1,500 to 2,000 pieces there. If I paint something with someone on my mind, they will eventually find a package on their doorstep.

Today's lady for A Lady A Day (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/a-lady-a-day/) is, I believe, the only Julie Guthrie female we found in our unpainted lead. Every other female that we bought by her we painted shortly after acquisition.

We never had need of a bride before now. Now, as you may have read earlier in this thread, we have a wedding in the near future as our king is betrothed to the daughter of our staunchest ally. Unfortunately, we continually have trouble keeping her out of our champion's pants.

No wonder she's blushing :D :D

It's nice to see a Julie Guthrie sculpt in here and I'm digging those purple accents.  Just a few more days left and I'm curious to know who the final Lady will be.

 lol

Though isn't that "Ritz" and not reds? I can never tell for sure...

EDIT: Hmmm Google says reds! Hum, how about that?

Got that last one too, playing the part of Isolde, or at least Isolde's handmaid! ::)

I may just actually have to take a brush to all these damn ladies you brought (back) to my attention!

The Bride does look the part; i.e., sweet & innocent...or doing a good version of it for appearance sake. I was a bit surprised that you didn't go for the traditional white, but in her current colors the Girl will have more uses than just her Big Day. WELL DONE once more!

DAY 27 of A Lady A Day (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/a-lady-a-day/) is one of those guests trying to upstage the bride.

Getting better all the time! Do you think your brushwork is improving, doing so many, so close together? I think your flesh tones on this guest-zilla are the best yet.

A fabulous idea to undertake, a Lady a Day, bravo!

Great idea! Who makes/made the sword sisters frm the first pictures? I'm looking for minis just like them!

The last one is another LOVELY addition to the Bevy of Beauties. WELL DONE!
I had done that mini for my erstwhile AD&D group; she wound up being painted as a Medusa...now I'm not sure if she was meant to be a Monster or a Maid.

lol Weddings can be so much fun.  ;)

I'm happy you're enjoying the thread. (And I'm glad you were able to check out the comic  (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/comics/lords-of-timlin/) too. I'll be learning website development for a long time now... )

Thank you! I used to think Teshub did a pretty good job on his flesh, but he had done lots of armored minis recently with basically only eyes showing. Most of the ladies have nice flowing curves that allowed my husband to let his brush go. Also, he played more with washes than he had previously.

I know the pace of one a day is not a huge number, but the consistency and theme has allowed us to gather a collection that never would have been.

Great idea! Who makes/made the sword sisters frm the first pictures? I'm looking for minis just like them!

Thanks! We got the sword sisters from the almost-defunct Mega-Minis (http://www.megaminis.com/). DeafNala recognized them, but I didn't ask the original manufacturer. The shields were from our bits box.

@DeafNala: I love that interpretation! Must have been quite the figure!

Thanks again all!

More lovelies revealed by your great brushwork. The lady with the long knife behind her back really took me back to an ex of mine  :-X

Your painting has really given this bevvy of beauties a real lease of life with your great choice of colours and eye for detail - well done!

Looking forward to the last few and then the group shot. A great project so far, and hopefully many will make an appearence in one of your future comics.

A FINE choice of colors; you're emerging from the must-paint-brown syndrome nicely. The eyes turned out TERRIFIC...VERY WELL DONE!
She seems to have a bit of an attitude problem...Is it going to be a Reality Show Wedding?

Thank you all so much for your interest, encouragement, and participation in our fun challenge of painting A Lady A Day (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/a-lady-a-day/) for the month of June! It's been a blast sharing this collection, some of which has been with us since nearly the beginning of our relationship. This was a great motivation to see these pieces completed.

The final Lady for DAY 30 is one such piece. Beautiful sculpt of fantastic artwork, and in lead to boot! I have no idea why she never got painted before but here she is now:
