I'm looking for suitable toys/models suitable for use (with or without conversion) as steam (or equivalent tech) cars/carriages. I'm ideally looking for something unarmoured that would hold 2 or 4 men plus a driver (who could be either inside or outside the vehicle). Needless to say, this is for use with IHMN.
I'm already using the Golden Compass 'tricycle' carriage, but want other options too.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I've made several conversions. The simplest was by replacing the team of horses with a Stephenson's Rocket locomotive.

The military velocipede was made using a West Wind Hansom and bits from an Empire Cannon

The Torchwood carriage is a platic model i got on Ebay. I added a boiler from Pardulon and what will eventually be carousel horses made from Perry French Cuirassier

Some nice conversions there 8)
cheers

I'll second that, some great conversions there. gets the old creative juices flowing.

Damn Skrapwelder, I make it a point to follow your posts and I don't remember any of those! Am I losing it? Every one of those is a treat :-* :-*

Keep up the good ideas. I would also be interested in sources for very early automobiles (versions where the driver sat separately to the passengers). These would be perfect for steam cars, as they look indistinguishable from internal combustion engine equivalents from the same era (try Googling "Stanley steam car").
Anyone know of a manufacturer making a model of a Locomobile?
Skrapwelder - I might have to do something along the lines of your first carriage, as that concept would make a great paddy wagon for my Scotland Yard company.

I got the 1/43 Rio "de dion bouton" off Ebay a while ago:

Also look for Disney Atlantis toys. There was a range that was roughly 1/48-1/43 and had some interesting vehicles.
I got this on a clearance a few years ago (pictures were taken long before I had a decent camera):

The tank is the most interesting bit of course, though the other items would be useful for conversion fodder:

Another one from the Atlantis toys is Cookies Chuckwagon. Just remove cookie and the motorize mule, put a smokestack on the back, and some controls on the front. I carved off the pots and pans, but that is up to you.

This thread on TMP, originally about building time machines, mentions Brumm toy vehicles, several I assume would intrigue you.
I also recall a mention of a Brit manufacture that more recent, but still useful, vehicles as toys, and found several quite reasonable for those of us in the US, but I've gone splah on the name.
Brain gone, rest on the way out...

Edit: No, really, I put this link in. I did so!

In spite of no assistance offered, I persevered! I triumphed! I scored!
*ahem* I got lucky.
The name I was seeking was Lledo. Whilst the pointer I had was for horse-drawn conveyances, those offer possibilities for conversion, of course.
So, Brumm, Lledo are added to my Matchbox, Maisto, Solido diecast searches.

Last time I visited the Dapol factory shop there were some cheap plastic kits of pre 1910 vehicles, just polybagged, not boxed, not sure if they were ex Airfix kits.

Thanks, fast, ol' bean. I'll just pop out and see what the web has to say.
Wait a minute; another model railroad supplier? Don't you folks have anything other than...
What's that in Wiki? 'Dapol Ltd is a Welsh model railway manufacturer based in Chirk, Wales.'
Never mind! Cymru am beth! lol
Alas, no such baggie'd beauties on the web site.

Where in Chirk? That's only 30 miles from me :o
Postcode anyone?

Bullshot, you don't want to go with the wedding party favor carriages I presume? Papp Midnight's carriage was wicked cool.

Skrapwelder- those vehicles are great, I love the carousel horses idea. :-*

On the Atlantis theme, I find the movie enjoyable from a steam-tech adventure point of view, and the Atlantean tech is very cool too. Excellent concepts from Disney. Treasure Planet is likewise a lot of fun. Neither are my favourite Disney movies (I'm a bit of a fan, actually, of Disney - go to the parks a couple of times a year!).
-
Lately the Atlantis stuff has been going cheap on ebay. I got 3 of the box sets with the little tank shown earlier for 15$ (including shipping) about a month ago. They used to be outrageous, but the last several months seems to have seen a reduction overall.

Grant you are crackers (in a good way! ;D)
Has anyone used the aeronaut model from the Golden Compass film with 28mm yet. I know the Magisterial carriage works ok but not sure about this one!

There were two that I know of. The smaller one looked a treat for 15mm or smaller, not so much for 28mm, even as a one-seater. The larger one, with inflatable balloon balls, appeared quite good to me.
Back to carriages, Dr. Mathias is quite right that the very humble wedding cake toppers are excellent He's also too modest, as his own work betrays.
However, I've a wedding cake 'pumpkin' carriage I've not seen so used; keep an eye out for one of those for something relatively unique.
@Grant I actually enjoyed Treasure Planet and Atlantis the Lost Continent, but am still ambivalent about Disney on the whole.

Over the weekend I won an Ebay auction for three different Lledo horse-drawn vehicles, which will form the basis for the first elements in my (steam) motor pool.
-
Boiler Pool perhaps?

Inspired by Skrapwelder's vehicles and adding my own take on a mad science Victorian world, here work-in-progress shots of my first steam vehicles for INMN, based on some Lledo horse-drawn vehicles I won on Ebay and stuff from my bits box:

Steam Carriage - a little more work needed (harness for the horse and controls for the cab)

Wow those look great!

Lovin' the anthropomorphic puller, what a clever idea.

Looking good Dave. :)

Good stuff but that tailpipe scares me. lol

Wicked!
Good stuff but that tailpipe scares me. lol
I was REALLY avoiding mentioning that! lol
Top rate, Bullshott.
Picked up a couple Days Gone autos, recently, discovered I've a fire wagon I'd completely forgotten, and missed was Lledo.
Brain is a'firing!

Edit: By the way, one was a somewhat beatup 1899 Benz, making it, just barely, VSFact, instead of fiction. 8)

What a cracking idea, sir.
They both look great!
:-*
I have just picked up some horse drawn stuff myself recently, so stealing your ideas looks extremely viable, Dave.
;)

Those will look the business when painted! Great conversions.

That steam horse is brilliant!

That steam horse is brilliant!
Its a GW horse with bits of drive wheels from an old 1/76 scale WW2 tank kit. What I could really do with is for someone to produce an affordable steam horse with separate rider (preferably available without the rider altogether, although one with rider legs (in riding breeches and boots) attached would be acceptable). I wonder who might be able to do this .... :)

Not really a suggestion, but have a look at the Heroclix starter for Bioshock: Infinity. If you've seen Werewolf: The Beast Among Us, you'll get the basic design: horse with two legs forward, rear on wheels. In this case, a single crank/side rod/whatever from front leg to wheel on each side, and chimney not too far off your mark.
Might be pony-sized in comparison...
Still, the set has several interesting pieces of VSF nature.

Maybe we should set up a 'Fanstarter'. Get at least one hundred players who pledge to buy at least three Steam Horses from the first company to make them (as long as they are not unreasonably priced).
I'm sure some enterprising young artisan could design one in CAD and then get them 3D Printed. I'd buy half a dozen for sure.
If you are that artisan, illustration on page 46 of the In Her Majesty's Name Rules in 28mm scale. A single pose would be fine, more would be brilliant.
If that works there are some walkers need making... ;)

To save double-posting, the finished shots of the steam Hansom can be found here:
