Title: Shadow Man/Juju Man - still ongoing... (page 13).
Post by: matakishi on 15 August 2013, 01:03:08 PM
(http://www.matakishi.com/new%20project%20shadowman%20logo.jpg)

I've started work on my BLAM game.

For those not familiar with the concept Shadow Men are magically empowered voodoo warriors who can exist in both our world (Liveside) and the world of the afterlife (Deadside). They use their powers to keep us safe from Deadside menaces who want to break into our world and control it.

Unsurprisingly a Deadside menace is rearing its ugly head and an unprecedented collection of three Shadow Men have been called upon to counteract it. The game will cater for three hero players who will each control a Shadow Man and their associated Voodoo priestess and supernatural helpers and one or more Deadside menaces who will control all the nasty stuff (and there'll be lots of it).

The table will represent both Liveside (our world) and  the warped, evil reality that is Deadside. The Shadow Men will have to travel between worlds using the mysterious (and dangerous) Coffin Gates to overcome the relentless evil, searching for and collecting clues and weapons as they go. The clock will be ticking, take too long and the Great Machine in Deadside will be fully charged with enough power to open a bridge between worlds and flood our reality with monstrous evil.

The action on Liveside will centre around a possessed farm. The action on Deadside will be in a warped copy of the farm. Changing the environment in one reality may well affect the environment in the other offering benefits or hindrances to the participants.

The sketches below show some of the Liveside components and their Deadside equivalents.

Very cool, I'm aware of the game but I have a young daughter so mostly it makes me think if this (which is awesome by the way).

So, the first Deadside location is complete. The Old House mirrors the Liveside farm house in Deadside and is the focal point of the trouble. This model was built many, many years ago by Paul (Overlord) Smith and this will be the first time I've used it in a game. It'll be worth the wait.

The Old House is home to the Gentlemen and their family.

That Old House looks suitably spooky to house THAT creepy looking family.
Great model selection as usual.

This looks like it will be a feast for the eyes.

Where are the Gentlemen from?
I recognise them, but cannot place them.
They remind me a little of this:

Nice materiel and interesting models. But i have seen the walking chickenshed or doghouse before. I think it was in a fairytale by H.G. Andersen or the brothers G. I remember it also featured in "Picture from an exhibition" the version by Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

The Russian witch Baba Yaga has a house that walks on chicken legs. It's very famous which is why I chose the chicken coop to be walking as opposed to the cow shed or barn.

The Living Shadows are great.
Must get some of those at some point.
Not sure what for yet, but that does not matter, just get them and then decide how to use them later.

This is certainly coming along nicely, Paul.
I thought you were pushing it a little bearing in mind the time limit.

WIP shots of the cage way.

The buildings are the living Shadow barracks and the Blood Ghoul barracks which will be at opposite corners of the Deadside board (probably).

I changed the enclosed cable car concept into a cage which is more in keeping with the original look and content of the computer game and will probably forego the blood and tar roofs that I was planning because the roofs are more crowded than I imagined.

The cage support is a stand in until my acrylic rod arrives but it gives an idea (albeit a wobbly one).

Sorry, the photos are so poor, obviously I'll get some better ones once everything's painted but I wanted to share since these took a couple of days to build and came out well (I think).

Entrances to the Blight Way, a series of underground pipes and tunnels that allow quick travel around Deadside. Exploring them can be deadly though :)

These are laser cut items from Demo's Laser-Cut Designs. I was going to make pipe entrances but these were quicker and have more uses elsewhere.

The two Shadow Men in the pics here are a Heroclix Drax (due for a repaint obviously) in the WIP Cage way shots and a Black Hat civilian in the Blight way shot. I have others which will be on display once I get round to painting them. My Nettie is a Black Hat civilian also and I have a Black Cat Bases Voodoo priestess and one from another far more expensive company whose name escapes me who will be my other Mamas. There'll be 9 or 12 heroes depending on my final decisions about player numbers, basically three per player with assorted allies being uncovered during play.

A question on the backdrop, is it going to be the tabletop for the game (and was it made specifically for this game)?

No and no.
It's going to be re painted for the game. It is my game board at the moment though so kind of yes and no too. Since I need an extra panel for a 4x8 I've decided to reprint everything to match my bases better. It's been on the cards for a couple of years but apathy is a great thing.

This week I built the pipes for the Pipe Way but the supports I'd designed didn't work so I've had to buy some new components. More on the Pipe Way as it happens. I also started work on the Scab House, this just needs some skin adding before painting. These are quick WIP shots from my phone.

An excellent build. I particulalry like the protruding 'wings' and the claws. You've really captured, in my mind, the early 2000s videogame aesthetic in this project. I'm looking forward to more miniatures as well, you always manage to find fantastic, obscure figures to accompany your work.
EDIT: Forgot to ask, where do the bodies on the stakes come from? I could use a few of them. Thanks.

I'm pretty pleased with it myself. Since I first wanted to do a Shadow Man game five years ago and stalled because I had no actual inspiration for the game play and what it should entail I've given it no thought. Then, I watched Silent Hill again the other day, and the idea of two parallel realities just clicked. I had a project!

It's coming together nicely. I designed the final two buildings today, I'm awaiting parts before I can build them. Because of my trip to Colours I've added a Deadside railway too. Now I've got a month to paint the extra figures I'll need and prepare the game cards. I'm looking forward to its test run at BLAM.

Here are the Liveside and Deadside working maps so you can start to plan your strategy ;)

The scenario is that a malignant force in Deadside has used its agents on Liveside to kidnap and torture people in a remote farm house. The victims' suffering is a beacon that the Deadside entity's Great Engine can focus on to create a breach in the barrier between worlds. If the barrier is breached all the horrors of deadside will be unleashed upon an unsuspecting Liveside.

To combat this an unprecedented 4 Shadow Men, their attendant Voodoo Priestesses and Supernatural helpers have been assembled to close the breach.

The Shadow Men will need to search both Liveside and Deadside for the clues to the whereabouts of the needed ritual elements, each element will be jealously guarded by the Sisters of Blood and will not be easy to claim.

The Deadside entity will use all its malignant power and followers to thwart the Shadow Men. Each time a Shadow Man is slain the Entity will gain a huge boost of life energy to power his Great Engine, bringing Liveside's doom ever closer.

It will be a horror filled game of cat and mouse as the Shadow Men strive to claim the ritual elements and discover weapons and allies to make them stronger whilst the Deadside Entity sends wave after wave of hideous minions after them to harvest more and more of their precious live energy for his Engine.

Hidden dangers await our heroes at every turn...

They're glass beads, they're representing gourds that contain cadeaux, gifts for the Loas, that can be exchanged for voodoo powers.

Pretty much although they won't feature in the gameplay, they're just set dressing. If I do include cadeaux they'll be encounter loot and be represented by a card.

Which is a good opportunity to explain the rules (in the understanding that details may change between now and BLAM).

The basic idea is to recreate the feel of a video game with exploration, encounters, loot and quests.
The story involves the Shadow Men (and Women, thank you Reg) attempting to collect a set of items that will enable their priestess (and priest) allies to close the Deadside portal. In Deadside the Entity player is attempting to thwart them and allow his Great Engine to reach its full power levels at which time the portal will open and he will invade Liveside with an army of horror. Each time his forces succeed in slaying a Shadow Man his Engine receives a huge jolt of energy which speeds it towards its target. Kill enough Shadow Men and he wins the game.

The Shadow Men are searching locations in both Liveside and Deadside for clues and items. There are currently about 40 locations altogether in the game. Each location will spawn a set of monsters that defend it. Once these have been defeated the victorious player may search the location. Shadow Men search for Power, weapons to boost them or life energy to heal them. Priestesses search for Magic, clues to the location of the ritual objects and their function. Magical followers search for allies to join the cause. Each location can only be searched once but all the player's characters may participate if they're present.

Spawned monsters (hereafter called 'mobs') will in turn spawn bosses and all have to be killed before a location can be searched. If a player dies and so leaves a location uncleared the mobs reset to their starting positions; bosses will disappear and their trash mobs will return to await the next combat.

As well as the encounter mobs the Entity player has wandering mobs that are generated each turn in both Liveside and Deadside from various 'generator' locations. Most of these mobs have a boss too who may be summoned if all the available wandering mobs have been deployed. The Entity player can use these forces to hunt and harry the players. The number generated is dependent on the number of Coffin Gates the Entity controls, taking these away from him will make the Shadow Men's job a lot easier.

Once a clue to a ritual object has been found the Shadow Man players will have to travel to the Deadside location that is revealed and do battle with the Sisters of Blood who guard the sacred objects. Once one of the objects is in their possession they will need to return to Liveside to include it in the ritual. If they collect and use them all they win. An individual victor will be decided based on trophies collected during play.

Wall of text breaking miniatures picture:

The combat system:

Combat and movement is carried out using a diminishing target number system. Everyone and everything starts with a target number that must be rolled equal to or under on a D6 to carry out an action or a move. Each successful roll lowers the target number needed for the next action by one. A player can attempt as many actions as he can until he fails a roll when his go ends.

Shadow Men have an activation number of 9 so their first 4 actions are automatic. Everyone else (nearly, some bosses are better) has an activation number of 6.
This is the only dice rolling in the game. If your action is to attack a mob and you make your activation roll you deal your damage (fixed but boostable by weapons) to the mob, there is no 'to hit' roll, no 'damage' roll, nothing. Just like a video game you shoot, you hit, you shoot again or move as you wish. Whether you do enough damage to kill with one shot is another matter.

Starting damage is 1 but can be raised to 3 by carrying up to two found weapons. 1 damage kills 1 mob, simples. However mobs operate in groups and unless you kill an entire group (usually 3 mobs) it stays in play, there is no bookkeeping, partial hits aren't recorded they are healed immediately. When a mob hits back each group deals 1 damage. Shadow Men start with 9 life but can build up more, each group of mobs killed gives you a life counter, either healing damage or raising your total.

Life counters can be used to change a dice roll; one life per pip. This makes it possible for Shadow Men to roll negative numbers and have lots of actions so long as their life holds out.
Maybe this will give them the edge they'll need to overcome an entire world that wants them dead...

Movement is location based, one action moves you to the next location nearest to you in your chosen direction. Various travel methods can be used to lengthen these moves or bypass areas altogether. Liveside has roads and rivers, Deadside has the Cage Way, Blight Way and Pipe Way. There are a couple of vehicles too.

I think that'sit in a nutshell, hopefully it'll be fun :)

Here's the Pipe Way built. This will join the Deadside pumping station in the tar pits to the great Engine (with a side branch going to the white tower) and mirrors the path of the Liveside river. Just the pump and the Engine to build now and about 60 miniatures left to paint. I finished nearly 30 miniatures this week so everything should still be ready on time :)

I really like the pipeway.  Its the sort of terrain that I have wanted to add to my own stuff for years but have never got around to.

Are the pieces between the pipe sections laser cut "pill" bases? Are the support structures (rather than the the three buildings) solid blocks?  I really like the way that you went about this part of the project in particular.  The pipe way looks practical and sturdy.  Great stuff.

Yes, the pipe ends are pill bases. The supports are balsa block, quicker than making cork boxes but more expensive. Originally I wanted to use laser cut girder sections for the supports but these proved too difficult to keep perpendicular and weren't very sturdy.

Once I changed the pipes the junction houses could be simplified too.

I'll post some sketches of my original idea once I get to my desktop and can grab the picture urls easily.

So many possible uses.

Cant see you selling that piece of scenery off in the future, it is just too versatile.

Those drawings are really nice.

My own inclination with something like that would also have been to use girder type supports, but the block approach that you have taken is far more practical.  It also has its own nice and brutal, vaguely Cold War, huge-lumps-of-concrete aesthetic.  I love it.

Cant see you selling that piece of scenery off in the future, it is just too versatile.

Definitely.

I can see a pipeline like that running through a Bladerunner style future LA or Mega City One or travelling over the heads of the inhabitants of a District 9 type slum, while just as easily its the only sign of civilisation in a remote Harry Harrison Deathworld type jungle.

Im going to have to lift this design wholesale.  Its too practical, versatile and cool looking not to.

Im assuming that the pipeways attach to the buildings and to each other in some way (magnets or some sort of plug maybe).  If you get a chance then I would very much like to see how you plan to make that work.

I have 40 figures on the painting table that need doing for BLAM; witches, pig men, lunatics, that sort of thing. I also need to make the final two buildings and paint the table. I have the rules to type up in a readable format (they're a 6000 word rambling document at the moment) and the card deck to make. According to my chart it should all be done with a day to go. I might miss the pre BLAM excursion though if all doesn't go to plan :)

I'm sure it'll all be fine...

12 Pig men painted, 8 witches painted, 8 scarecrows painted. Only the 12 lunatics to do now. I've started constructing the pump house and painting the 38 game markers which will be finished tomorrow. The Great Engine awaits construction. The Pipe Way pipes are nearly finished but it proved too wet to go outside and paint the table today so that remains to be done.
I hope to use the time left to paint 100 lost souls but may stop short of that. I think I have about 40 so far ready to go.
No more pictures (probably) until the event itself, don't want to ruin the surprise :)

The card art is adding another level of awesome to an already fantastic project!

I can't help but think the font doesn't quite fit, though. Too clean and regimented a sans serif for the game. Maybe something in a handwriting font, still readable but creepier and more irregular?

Post by: matakishi on 23 October 2013, 12:08:38 AM
I'll stick with blocky regular for this one. I like it, it's clear and I think it matches the industrial setting well enough; it also means I can use a particular app which makes the card production very fast. I'd have to actively dislike it to bother to change at this stage.

I love that demon house( did you just happen to have 8 sea urchins lying around) and Baba Yaga's hut is brilliant(there is something more creepy about the mechanical legs than the more usual chicken legs).

Thanks for all the support :)
The donkey is from Fenris Games as are the window grills, the resin encounter markers (not shown here yet), the rickety fences on the Liveside farm buildings (you'll need to see my previous Invasion of the Saucer People thread for those) and a few other things besides. Ian at Fenris has been a great help.

Yesterday I finished all the figure bases and printed and laminated the cards. I'm painting the last two buildings now, just pausing for a coffee as I write this. I still need to paint the table surface but that shouldn't take long. Working around the new kittens, we got two, hasn't slowed me up much and, besides, they need to learn how to help early on in their lives :)

I may get a chance to post some shots of all the miniatures as they're packed , I think there's 518 miniatures, 61 painted model game markers, 41 buildings and many assorted other scenery items (rivers, roads, rocks, trees, fences etc) all assembled for this project. A large proportion specially done in the last 6 weeks.

I'm looking forward to finding out if it all works :D

BLAM is the British Lead Adventurers Meeting and is being held this weekend. There are lots of people here working on BLAM games but they seem to have posted them on the BLAM board which you won't have access to. I have some reports of previous BLAMs on my site if you're interested in seeing what goes on.

I'll post some details later but for now, here are a couple of quick photos of the board.

This was the first time the boards had been set up so it was gratifying to find they went together mostly as planned :)

The pumping station, that's everything built and all the figures painted.

Paul, may I ask who manufactures that Nodding Donkey cutout?

Donkey is indeed from Fenris.

More photos to come as soon as I ahve time to crop and sort them.
Small rules changes added to make the Deadside player's life a little easier. PDF to follow.

A big thank you to all the players, you were all great, it's the players that make the game.

It looked like a good game. When I arrived (late!) a game was in full flow and when the next game started I was playing SSS! There were so many good games on at once it was like Christmas!

looks brilliant. What are those three towers that look like crosses between loofahs and wasp nests and how did you make them and where did you get the idea from?

I meant to ask you about them, they were very effective. They managed to look alien but natural at the same time.

That is just stunning. What a game that must have been. The terrain is indeed impressive as is the quality of the painted figures. :-*

So, obviously it's not all over just because BLAM is done.
I'm preparing the rule book for publication, hopefully it'll be available soon. It's going to include some different scenarios so that people can play without collecting a house full of people. Most of which will work on a 4ft x 4ft board.

Here's some art for an assortment of new encounter cards:

Thanks Giles, it's a way off yet but might be ready before Christmas.

I've finished the project report with many more photos from BLAM and details of the final builds.

I've been accumulating quite a few miniatures and vehicles ready for some more scenarios which I hope to get to work on once my Anarchy Offline project is ready to go.
I painted these because they were quick to do in between other stuff. These are 3D printed golems that I bought off eBay for about £1.00 each, they make excellent flesh hulks, unformed evil Mumbo Men who will later grow into fully fledged Deadside champions.
