Title: My SA Thread
Post by: Big Frank on September 05, 2013, 01:50:46 AM
Having been inspired by Mason's thread I've started my own.
I painted these up a while back, but thought they would fit in nicely with Strange Aeons.

Great work, Frank.
I do love your smooth but pronounced shading style, it is lovely.
 :-* :-*

I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of your threads, especially the US WWII fellas.
I know that this will be a joy to follow too.
 :D

Of course, now you have to tell us where all those goodies are from, particularly that Construct.

@Mason. The fishman is, as someone's already mentioned, from Wyrd miniatures. "Silurid Slaves" Ithink they're called.

Gotta agree with the Doc: They are all great but the Waterway men are sublime.

I used Valejo German camo beige as a base coat.
Then added small amounts of Valejo ivory until I was just using pure Ivory. Then used pure white as a final highlight. I kept the paint really thin and just built up the highlights gradually.
I'm thinking it might still need a very thin white glaze just to ease the transition from shade to highlight.

Found this thread and went through it from start to finish. Lots of top notch eye candy, stunning brushwork mate, the minis REALLY 'pop' out of the screen  :o!!! Bravo indeed sir  :). Very difficult to pick a particular favourite, but I think I will go with Dr Avalanche, the face is so very well painted and he looks the right level of sinister  lol.

Keep up the good work.

@ Mason it's a reaper mini. 2868 Eldritch Demon, from the "Dark Haven Legends" line

I think they do a bones version too.
As for Mrs Doyle the "Working girls" last mini on the right looks very appropriate.

I love those hybrid figures and you have done a cracking job on them.

That board really sets the scene too.
A proper quaint little country village for Ted and the Boys to destroy.

Great board!! I really like the buildings you are using. Did you build them yourself? Great work! I am eagerly awaiting your gameplay reports.

@Reviler, didn't build any of the terrain apart form the board itself and sticking a few tress on a base X 2.
The inn is from http://www.thomarillion.de/index.php?page=artikel_detail&id=407&origin=%3Fpage%3Dcatalog%26cat%3Dbau%26slide%3D46
Can't remember where the cottages are from. Picked them up at show a couple of years ago.
The roads are from fat franks and one base of trees were made by the terrain tutor. Given to me as a gift (along with a shed load of other stuff) for painting some minis for a mate.
Hoping to get some pics etc of the games posted up soon.

Thanks for posting,

Here's the first bat rep.
The Agents are from the Department of Occult Research, Investigation and Study. Known as DORIS.
Agent Parker. Shoot 'em up, .22 handgun X 2 and cleaver.
Agent Peters, character. Command, heroic, Tommy gun and knife.
Agent Clarke. Lucky, shot gun and knife.
(http://i381.photobucket.com/albums/oo254/Mrcastlesotr/SoTRII/0E80E1E8-65E4-4A0A-ADD3-5FE82E63300B_zpsssqqjupi.jpg) (http://s381.photobucket.com/user/Mrcastlesotr/media/SoTRII/0E80E1E8-65E4-4A0A-ADD3-5FE82E63300B_zpsssqqjupi.jpg.html)
The Department had received contact from an undercover operative about cult meetings and ritual sacrifices in a village in the northwest of England. It was to be the Agents first outing as a team.
Peters gave the order to stop their car in a wooded area just outside the village and proceeded on foot, so as not to alert any sentries the cult had posted.
Just as they'd got out of the car and were doing a final weapons check a baleful howl split the night.
"Sounds like that's the welcoming committee."
Peters had a suspicion they'd been betrayed. No time to worry about that now though.
"Parker. Go through the woods. Clarke, with me"
MONSTER HUNT!!!!
Lurker Daemonic Hound. Combat vet, sneaky, +1 wound, heroic, tough. 15BP. Peters was it chosen prey.

The beast sets up in the woods and moves into cover behind the hedges.
(http://i381.photobucket.com/albums/oo254/Mrcastlesotr/SoTRII/6000201E-A56F-4997-9AF3-F0950D3EE766_zpsx57ixfzg.jpg) (http://s381.photobucket.com/user/Mrcastlesotr/media/SoTRII/6000201E-A56F-4997-9AF3-F0950D3EE766_zpsx57ixfzg.jpg.html)

Parker moves through the woods, Peters and Clarke cautiously skirt around the edges of the
trees.
The hound sensing Parker, leaps over the hedge and charges him.
(http://i381.photobucket.com/albums/oo254/Mrcastlesotr/SoTRII/F1192A2E-EF0C-4E9C-A696-EED98A158EC4_zpsgyq3kv0u.jpg) (http://s381.photobucket.com/user/Mrcastlesotr/media/SoTRII/F1192A2E-EF0C-4E9C-A696-EED98A158EC4_zpsgyq3kv0u.jpg.html)
Parker passes his resolve test for hideous and miraculously wins the close combat. He chooses to break from combat.
(http://i381.photobucket.com/albums/oo254/Mrcastlesotr/SoTRII/1E1D6DCE-A6DE-487A-82DF-16939C82B669_zpsshzgspra.jpg) (http://s381.photobucket.com/user/Mrcastlesotr/media/SoTRII/1E1D6DCE-A6DE-487A-82DF-16939C82B669_zpsshzgspra.jpg.html)
Peters and Clarke move forward and open up on the hound.
(http://i381.photobucket.com/albums/oo254/Mrcastlesotr/SoTRII/73DFE584-EF92-40FD-B4A0-A5114AEC7D5A_zpso7tpmppw.jpg) (http://s381.photobucket.com/user/Mrcastlesotr/media/SoTRII/73DFE584-EF92-40FD-B4A0-A5114AEC7D5A_zpso7tpmppw.jpg.html)
Clarke misses, Peters hits and causes 2 wounds not enough to kill the beast so he uses his heroic skill and fires again. He hits again but his weapon jams! However he causes another wound and the hounds tough skill isn't enough to save it from a minor injury.
Peters and Parker gained a skill and 1 map piece was found.
A quick game but very enjoyable. Forgot to use my heroic skill for the hound on the second turn. Probably wouldn't have mattered anyway my dice rolling was terrible. My sons on the other hand!! Should have got him to pick the lottery numbers that night.
Hope you like.
Second rep still to come.
Cheers BF

Sanded and scored a CD then covered with PVA and stuck down a piece of kitchen roll.
Covered this with watered down PVA and left to dry for about 1/2hr.
Glued down (PVA) some hirst arts bits and a couple of columns I'd made (hirst arts dungeon door frames and Cthulhu figures)
Stuck a couple of skulls and scrolls on the pillers and covered the base in sand.
Once this was dry painted up, added static grass, grass tufts, bushes and varnished.
Hope you like.

@Mason. I've got that Madonna song stuck in my head now.
"Bill Oddie, Bill Oddie.
Rub your hands all over my body"
Although I don't even think a degenerate would sink to those levels of depravity.
 :o :o :o
@Reed.
White undercoat, base with 50/50 mix of tan/dwarf flesh
1st highlight of dwarf flesh then add little Ivory for successive highlights.
Final highlight of pure Ivory. Vallejo model colour paints used.
Here's the other two degenerates, still need basing and varnishing.

After killing the Daemonic Hound the agents needed to get to the Inn. Where, their Intel told them, the cult were to carry out their nefarious act.
They knew the cultists would be prepared for them.
"They'll be waiting for us. Parker you're on my right, Clarke left. Keep moving, move n fire. Pick your targets, make each shot count. Understand?
Parker and Clarke both nodded. "Yes boss" they replied.

Agent Peters sprints along the road. Clarke moves towards the woods on the left and Parker goes right.

Knowing he needs to act fast, Peters uses his heroic skill and shoots at the suicide and knife wielding cultists hitting both.
They both fail their cover saves, the suicide cultist dies but the other falls to the ground stunned.

The Tommy gun wielding cultist moves forward, shoots at Peters and wounds him. The stunned cultist gets to his feet leaps the wall and charges Peters.

The cultist and Peters fight but no one can land a telling blow...

Clark emerges from the woods and fires at the cultist with the tommy gun but ends up merely peppering their car with shot.

Parker bursts from behind the hedge, shouts "Pull your socks up Guv", he opens up with both pistols and takes out the Tommy gunner.
Peters draws his knife and charges the leader, who manages to fend off His attacks.
As the Cult leader and Peters dance around each other, blades drawn, the shotgun Cultist moves out of the woods and shoots at Parker, but misses.

@Mason. The thing is a mutant from fenris games, Cthulhu Wars range.
@Porthius. The cars are from Matchbox models of yesteryear. They're straight out of the box. I've just used Modelmates weathering liquids, pigments and gave them a coat of Testors dulcote. Mason has done a great how to on his Strange Aeons thread. Can't remember what page its on though. If he reads this I'm sure he'll post the link to "Shotgun Bobs used Car dealership"

Actually, you can use any file repository.  I use the photo gallery here on the forum.  It is not the most intuitive on how to snag the (true) file path, but it is not too difficult...the rest is as above, just insert the full file path into the link generated by the button and it ends up like below (sorta)...

(bracket)img(bracket)  (full path to file on-line) (bracket)/img(bracket)

Post by: Big Frank on May 12, 2016, 12:06:52 AM
Thanks for the comments.
Elk101 it's a die cast, models of yesteryear, Shell, tow truck.
I under coated black, airbrushed it brown and then sprayed spots of lighter brown and orange.
Then gave it a generous coating of gloss varnish and when that was dry used heavy chipping fluid. It was airbrushed with a couple of shades of green and then scrubbed with a stiff wet brush to activate the chipping fluid. Then some details picked out, edge highlighted, weathered with washes, glazes and weathering powders. This all sealed with a couple of coats of testors dulcote.
Finished Hillbillymobile.

WallyTWest, the vehicles are Matchbox Models of Yesteryear. You can pick them up pretty cheap from EBay. I got about 20 of them for £20 but to be honest, that's way more than you'll need. They're a bit on the big side too but look ok on the board. I'll take a couple of picks later with some minis for size comparison.
Some people use Solidio.
There's also the some coming out for the Chicago way, they're resin I think and around £20 each but look really nice.
Cheers BF.

I know they are harder to come by overseas but I have a few extras if anyone wants them for a sensible price.
Postage may make them less attractive, though....

If you want a size comparison for Matchbox you can check out my SA thread where 'Shotgun Bob', the second-hand car salesman and Cult member (from Pulp Figures) provides scale.
The first page of the thread has a contents page so you should find the vehicles easily enough with a little root around:

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=39808.0

The cars start on page 58 or so.

Wonderful themed set.  The ramshackle barn is perfect.  The hang on the door and gaps in the slats give it a genuine charm and authenticity.  The maniac is a solid addition to your mountain clan.  The head is from a GW flagellant but where did you get the body?  Clearly shouldn't be trusted with power tools, sheep or anything else for that matter.

Lovely brushwork, as usual.

The maniac is from Fenris games, one of the mutant hillbillies. The pitchfork was cut away and replaced with a Hasslefree chainsaw (with bent paper clip for handle)

Very nice job on the barn. How long do you reckon it too start to finish?

It took about 8hrs or so including time for washes and glue to dry. The most time consuming part was making the fences.
Finished the hillbilly maniac.
