In anticipation of our upcoming gaming convention I've been writing sceanrios and painting leagues for Pulp Alley.
Here are some of the leagues:

Close up to illustrate level of painting. (OK, but not amazing I guess). This particular individual is supposed to look sunburned.
Can't wait to play!

Your OK is what I would call Amazing!
Excellent painting and very inspirational.
I look forward to seeing pics of the games.
Thanks.
-
off to a great start i'd say.
-
Very nice work! :)
-
Great painting on some very nice minis!
-
Nice work! :-*
-
If it's pulp it's all good ;)
-
Beautiful brushwork! :-* :-*
The General and his cronies are dripping with menace. Jagged scar, iron mask, bad dog, oh yes -- MENACE!
Dr. t V -- what convention are you getting ready for? where/when?
THANKS
-
They're top drawer quality Mr Dr; really lovely brushwork.

That would be our local Horisont convention. Denmark the 15th to 17th of November. :D

Awesome! Have fun at Horisont and please let us know if we can help you with anything!
Do you have rosters for these guys? I'm really curious about what skills/abilities you picked.
OH... I was thinking we probably should start a thread for players to post their Pulp Alley leagues and rosters. I know folks keep sharing them but it might help to compile them on one thread so they're easier to find?
THANKS

I haven't gone too crazy with the stats. The character cards are still WIP but here's the General for you:

It fits in a standard Ultimate Carrd Protector Pocket (like those used for tradeable card games)

Who makes General Vogel, they guy with the anti tank device ?
-
Love 'em!
:-*
-
Like both the figures and how you've done the cards :)
I look forward to reading an AAR.

Definitely! That is the last part holding me up before running a game...making up a half dozen rosters. That would be VERY helpful!

Dr. the Viking, that card is excellent!
And that is a very good friend.

I like this card design. Putting the abilities on the back gives you much more room.
I don't think you'll need to put d4 in the Health line. Pulp Alley doesn't use any d4 dice and d12's are really rare. You might leave the d12 off, unless you're going to have someone with a d12 Health. It might avoid some questions or confusion.
Your painting is awesome. I don't know how you do it. :o

Well spotted! lol
Painting is easy, just apply yourself. lol lol

Ah-ha, that explains it. Yup, it's hard to sneak an error passed Mila. She's been fixing my mistakes for years. lol lol

Yeah it's all down me being busy and the guy doing the cards not knowing the rules. :D
We're moving the health bar to the bottom of the card also, so you can use a clip to keep track on it. No messy pencil on my cards! ;)
Oh and we had a few games yesterday (got so caught up in the thing that I forgot photographing!). And I must say that I was completely taken by the simplicity and depth and feasibility as a presentation game of these rules!
-
Dr. The Viking has agreed to let us use his thread to group the Pulp Alley leagues and rosters together.
I’m hoping that we’ll be able to find old leagues more easily this way, so please feel free to add your own Pulp Alley league pics and rosters to this thread.
Let's see what you got! :D

"Gangs" ... where is that rule?
The beta rules for Gangs can be downloaded from our yahoo group site -- http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/pulpalley/info
Those rules (or something very close) will most likely be printed in our upcoming Vice Alley expansion/campaign for mobsters, g-men, and vigilantes.

I was very happy with the cool ideas Bobby Fisher brought to writing Perilous Island, so I'm really excited to see Vice Alley starting to take shape.
Thanks

I'm super excited about Vice Alley and if I can ever find time to paint between writing, working and finishing my degree, I hope to add a league or two to this thread as well.

Must be good rules when you've got a Chess Grandmaster writing them.

Wow Dave! You've got some awesome stuff going on there. I see that some old favourites have been re-worked, specifically Tigra and Charnock. Now, for the questions... ;D
In the Master of the Unspeakable league, it specifies that he uses Summon to summon "Winged Minions, as shown below." However, the Winged Minions on the roster are custom-made, using the Animals perk and the Winged ability. I was under the impression that the level 1 Minion that was summoned had to come from the choices on the Minions list. Just looking for clarification. Love the minis and the league.
Imhotep is a Terror (just like stating the obvious). Do you play him as a league every now and then? Just curious.
The Collector is just awesome. The rules in that league, will they be included in Pulp Leagues or some other forthcoming supplement? So awesome. What are those models?
BTW, I finally found my missing camera. If photos of the Liberators would be useful for something (Pulp Leagues?) please let mw know.

Oh yes, I'm happy with the reworked version of our Jungle Princess league. The Perilous Island abilities really added a cool mystic feel that fits their backstory. And for your questions........
The Unspeakable Flyers – The newly summoned Flyers would not benefit from the League’s Animals perk but they are otherwise the same as the Face-Eaters. I can see how that would be misleading, but I knew what I meant. ;D
Imhotep Terror – That version of Imhotep was only used twice, at the end of a fun mini-campaign. We use Terrors for special occasions rather than as regular leagues.
Gadgets – I’m hoping I can fit the Gadgets rules into our next book, Pulp Vehicles. Let me know if you’d like to try the beta version of the Gadget rules. They really are great fun!
Very glad you found you camera. I'm always in need of good pics! :D
-
dave - how are 'gadgets' different than 'gear'? so there's 2 books in the works - vice alley and pulp vehicles - or will it all be in one?
-
Dave, they're starting to piece together your master plan. It may be time to escape in your Dino-shaped rocket.
-
Dave - Nice to see your leagues from the official PA forums on the LAF! I've noticed that you sometimes include new abilities in your rosters. I assume Femme Fatale is a level 4 ability since its similar to Intimidating, but what about Fast Thinking and Notable? Thanks in advance!
-

Gadgets are purchased with normal Gear points, but tend to be less predictable/stable. Whenever a Gadget is used you'll draw a random Fortune card and the number in the bottom-left will help determine how effective it is. However, if you draw an 'Alert' (bottom-right icon) then you've got problems! lol lol
Well, there are more like 5-6 different projects in the works. There's my Pulp Vehicles book, Bobby's Vice City, Marijn, Jase & Roon's Pulp Egypt, Jaye's Pulp Sci-Fi, Tim's Pulp Horror, and Daniel's Pulp RPG project. FYI -- those are mostly working titles.
I'm still hoping Pulp Vehicles will be released before the end of the year and at least 2-3 of the other ones are released in 2014.
All this and more, coming soon! :D

You are correct, we're constantly playtesting and fine-tuning new abilities before they get added to a book.
Femme Fatale -- has been renamed "Disarming" and is being tested as a new level 4 ability. There's also a Might version called "Grappler" that only works when engaged in a brawl.
Notable -- this ability is currently being tested at level 2.
Fast Thinking -- is also being tested at level 2. And there is a new one called "Resourceful" that lets you use a Combat skill in lieu of an Action skill.
Please feel free to try these abilities for yourself and let us know what you think.

Dave, will Vice Alley and Egypt largely be themed setting books along the lines of Perilous Island, with Sci-fi and Horror being genre books?
I kind of imagine they will offer new abilities, perks and gear for Leagues, new cards and new scenarios that are theme or genre specific without rewriting the core rules? I think I need to pick up Perilous Island on PDF. Order coming in about five minutes!
Cheers, Steve

Steve --- Yes, you imagine correctly. The upcoming books will have a layout similar to Perilous Island. The exception being Pulp Vehicles, which will be mostly rules and maybe a couple scenarios if I can fit them in.
And here's another league we're using to playtest some new perk/abilities ---

At this time, we're leaning towards splitting the content that was originally going into Pulp Leagues between Pulp Vehicles and Vice Alley.
For example, the rules for Gangs, Associates, Locations, Bystanders, and such are now planned for Vice Alley. Gadgets, Mounts, and so on was moved to Pulp Vehicles.
Pulp Leagues may eventually be a book full of Leagues, but for now it's on the back burner.

My two starting leagues for the Perilous Island campaign - Scenario One has been uprooted to Egypt (to suit my scenery) and secondary characters will flit in and out as the story advances.

Hi, can I get some feedback on my first two leagues I created?
To give you some background, Dakota Smith is the Indiana Jones clone. His league includes his faithful sidekick at the university, along with an annoying sometimes-girlfriend and pesky reporter who find a way to tag along. Von Jaeger is his Nazi nemesis with his hired gun sidekick, and Fraulein Blucher from the Nazi Institute of Supernatural Weaponry (or something like that...haven't come up with a firm name, yet). A few German submarine sailors tag along for brute force.

Why do your Dakota Smith allies have such high stats? Is that a typo or did I miss something?

If I had a dollar for every time I copied and pasted, and then forgot to change relevant information....!!!
Thanks. I re-uploaded. Comments?

Nice balance, Mike.
Dakota -- is ready for fighting or challenges, and will do good at both.
Harold -- I might move the d8's from Finesse over to Might just because he's got those Muscles of Steel. ;)
Dolly -- is definitely there to help with the challenges, but won't be too hot in a fight.
Eric -- I might be tempted to to send Eric in first on some plot points - just to draw out perils. With his re-roll on Dodge he has a decent chance to Dodge away from Perils.
Local Guide -- is there to add a bit more Brawl, he could be very useful.
Overall, I'd say Dakota's league is Challenge oriented. They can hold their own in a fight, but against a purely Combat league they're better off staying focused on the prize.
Jaeger -- has some nice defensive abilities, that could make him a tought cookie. I might be tempted to try and get his Dodge up to 3d, but I'm not sure where to take it from.
Otto -- is there to fight, no doubt about it. This makes him a good bodyguard type for Jaeger.
Blucher -- will be helpful for completing challenges and it's always nice to have someone like that around.
3 Sailor -- bring some extra firepower to the league.
Jaeger's league is fairly balanced, leaning slighty towards Combat. I'd use Otto and the Sailors to harry the enemy, while Jaeger and Blucher stay focused on the plot points. If Blucher gets ko'd, then Otto may need to turn his focus to plot points.
These leagues will play very well against each other. Well done.

Well that group that specialized in underwater leagues had twenty thousand so post away. lol

Since they're somewhat uniform, I renamed a few of the abilities so I can identify the models a little easier when we're playing.
This is definitely a league built for fightin' ---

Here are the leagues that were used for our Halloween scenario. We also used these leagues to playtest some new abilities.
The business men have come from the local chemical plant to investigate the radiation leak. Apparently the radiation infested both the ground and the water supply causing the dead to rise and giving some of the townspeople an incredible case of the munchies. They have come to try to keep the infestation under wraps.

Sid, Manny and their boss, P.S., had been drinking at the local pub when the busboy suddenly bit a chunk out of the bartender. Agreeing that the drinks were not worth an arm and a leg, they quickly ran outside after decapitating the busboy.
Sonny, on vacation to see his eccentric grandfather, is dropped off in front of the house before the taxi speeds away. He approaches the door with his luggage and raises his hand to knock before the door opens and the maid staggers towards him. Gramps quickly comes behind her and hit the maid over the head with his umbrella. "Quick, no time to explain, put down your things, here's a gun. I need you to run into the house and find a hammer, the dog leash, my coat, and a banana."

The Maximoffs own the majority of the town, including the chemical plant. Once they got the news of the dead wandering, Lilith had everyone pack and head for the tuck. But before they could get to it they were surrounded. Lilith knocked a few townspeople down with her cane and her husband, Mordecai, pulled his emergency gun.

I like "Dandy" as a skill. Is that going to appear in a future PA supplement, or is it simply the ever-reliable, much-renamed Animal tweaked slightly?
I have a couple of Bob Murch figures that skill would be perfect for, actually...

Yup, Dandy and Brainy are slated for 'Vice Alley'. They are different from Animal in that they take away a character's Brawling skill - rather than Shooting. Dandy bumps up Dodge and Finesse, and Brainy bumps Dodge and Cunning.
Currently those two new abilities are planned for level 1, so feel free to try them out and let us know what you think.

Over on The Warbard, I've posted the PDF of my Dread Thuggee League for Pulp Alley (http://www.warbard.ca/2013/10/28/the-dread-thuggee-a-pulp-alley-league/).
It's a small (four person) League with no ranged firepower, specialized for strangling and stealth. They've had a challenge to use, but given the right circumstances can be effective and deadly in a PA game!

Very cool concept for a Pulp Alley league.
Hmm... I may have missed something, but I think Amrish (leader) could have another skill a 4 dice? Maybe bump up his Dodge or Finesse, or I guess you could raise his Might to 3 dice.
Stealth based leagues do take a bit more planning, patience, and/or luck - but can be lots of fun to play. Because they can be a bit slower to move around, while they are hiding, they almost work better as a spoiler.
BTW -- here's a new in-hiding ability we are playtesting for Vice Alley ---
Infiltrate - While hiding, this character may move up to 12" and remain hidden as long as they do not move within 12" of an enemy character.
-
I like this concept of stealth-based leagues, I might have to have a go at one. Thanks for the idea. ;D
-
dave - i assume in-hinding is only if they don't shoot, brawl, charge/run too. staying 12" away on a 3x3 table is hard to do for very long.

Ayup, attacking an enemy or performing an action still pulls you out of hiding - but you may have a chance to 'ambush' the enemy if you're sneaky enough. ;)
THANKS

Will terrain block stealth distance checks, or is the distance "as the crow flies"?
Assuming you are asking about the Infiltrate move specifically, the answer is "maybe". ;D
Infiltrate is still on the playtest list so we're trying it a few different ways. There's another version that states, "as long the character remains out of line-of-sight of the enemy". This is where playtesting is so valuable.
Feel free to let me know what you think.
Maybe I should clarify that "spotting" check are based on line-of-sight. But that's not really what we're talking about here.

I think that if the photos had more of a period frame, instead of a clean "polaroid" type frame, that Dr. Viking's cards are may favourite so far.
By the way, that brings up a good question. Can anyone suggest a good, free "old typewriter" font?

FramFramson, try this site:

There's a lot of good stuff on there.

Mad Lord Snapcase (good to see another Discworld fan abroad in the world!) has beaten me to the mention of DaFont, but I'm rather font (er... fond...) of Veteran Typewriter (http://www.dafont.com/veteran-typewriter.font). It's readable but distressed, and not as widely spaced (kerned) between the letters as other fonts.
Also, I'm intoxicated, and it's 0217 where I am. I should in no way be allowed upon the World Wide Webs. Nevertheless, Veteran Typewriter is a damn good font.
-
Downloaded the Veteran Typewriter, thanks. It's 10:50 in the morning here, so I am drinking coffee, glad to hear you're enjoying the odd drink or seven across the world!
“The disc, being flat, has no real horizon. Any adventurous sailor who got funny ideas from staring at eggs and oranges for too long and set out for the antipodes soon learned that the reason why distant ships sometimes looked as though they were disappearing over the edge of the world was that they were disappearing over the edge of the world.”

Many thanks fellows!

What level is that "Inventor" ability? Seems like something that would scale well? (i.e. it's available at lower levels?).
Also, is "Companions" a tradeoff ability for having no Sidekick? How many points does it cost?

I also think Inventor scales well. Currently we have it slated for Level 2.
Yes, you are correct. The tradeoff for Companions is that you cannot have a Sidekick. We are currently testing Companions as a 2 slot Perk.
-
Cool. I like the Companions idea, because one of my problems has been trying to frame a full group evocative characters while using only one ability. More abilities allows you to create a bit more of a sense of distinct personality for the characters involved.

Veterans of a hundred rules changes, Pop Top is one of our very first Pulp Alley playtest leagues from years ago.

Ahoy!
I had my first game of Pulp Alley yesterday. We had a lot of fun (even with the usual first game mistakes one makes, like forgetting rules or misreading them :) )
I made 3 leagues from which they picked one and I got the leftover. I'm the only one in our club, who has suitable figures for a "traditional" pulp setting and most of them are still waiting in boxes. So every one used whatever figures from their collections that he felt appropriate for the character. For example The Crew of the Fortunehunter was made up from Malifaux gremlins, while my Baron was an Imperial Guard senior officer and Finigen was Grima from Lotr.
So the Leagues:
The Crew of the Fortunehunter, space/time/dimension pirates
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/CrewoftheFortunehunter_zps60d31c00.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/CrewoftheFortunehunter_zps60d31c00.jpg.html)
The Baron Gromund, general viliain
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/TheBaronofGromund_zps4e66f2b9.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/TheBaronofGromund_zps4e66f2b9.jpg.html)
and Dr. Lazarus & Co. (put together quickly at 1 am...)
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/DrLazarusampCo_zps001d04e1.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/DrLazarusampCo_zps001d04e1.jpg.html)
We played the first scenario with the deployment of the second. The pirates won, with the Captain holding a minor and the mayor plot point at the end. The combined forces of the Baron and the Doctor couldn't finish her, although she was the last (wo)man standing from her league lol
Both my opponents wants to play again, with leagues put together by themselves. And that makes me very happy :D
-
Cool leagues, McM! It's always interesting to see what skills/abilitie/perks other folks are picking.
I think you've got some good leagues there, but I can definitely understand that the other guys want to make their own. Creating leagues can be part of the fun!

Excellent, and that's why it's not just about beating down the other side - you've got to complete your objectives to win the day!

Heh, that was totally unintentional lol
The name was familiar and it turns out I have a book from him, the one titled Dragon. It was a gift some years back, though I did not read it yet. I also googled up the name and found out that the movie Sahara with Matthew McConaughey is based on his book.

My brother dad and I all used to read the stuff, great horrible trashy fun. Modern Pulp, really, when you think about it.

I haven't decided if the Companions perk will be 1 or 2 points.
At first I was thinking 2 points because it certainly can add some oomph to a league, but the fact that you can't have a Sidekick seems to level it out a bit.
THANKS
-
The fact that the additional abilities can only be level 1 or level 2 abilities probably tempers it too?
Best advice would be to try and get the playtesters to really break it! See how busted a league they can make with expanded abilities.

Ahoy!
I put the final coat of varnish on the crew of the Fortunehunter, so I thought I share them with you.

From left to right: Mr. Dirk, One-Eye, the Captain herself, Mr. Gunn and Mr. Jones.
I made some minor changes in the league. I changed the Animal perk on Mr. Gunn and gave it to Mr. Jones (renamed Rebreather). The first mate got Hardened Veteran instead. He was always knocked by shooting out before reaching anyone to beat up. This way at least he could shoot back and have the chance to finish someone off as well. And he has a pistol anyway :)
Mr. Jones took the role of the beatstick and I hope he will be less focused as he is only a follower.

dave - on the companions perk - it seems a little overpowering because it's almost like having 4 (almost) sidekicks instead of 1. granted i haven't play tested it so that's just an initial thought.
@fram - i don't have any problems developing evocative characters using story telling, background and a mix of abilities. in fact it's one of my pitfalls as i have a lot of good ideas and too few figures.
-
dave - on the companions perk - it seems a little overpowering because it's almost like having 4 (almost) sidekicks instead of 1. granted i haven't play tested it so that's just an initial thought.
That's kind of how I felt at first, but it appears to be far more balanced than I initially thought.
First, they really don't measure up to a real Sidekick. They don't start with any d8 skills, they don't start with d8 Health, they can't pick Sidekick level abilities, and they don't start with any skills at 3 dice. These are all pretty big gaps between Sidekicks and Companions.
Second, the fact that this league cannot take a Sidekick also helps to balance it out.
We put a significant amount of thought and playtesting in to these perks/abilities, but that doesn't mean we always get it right. Thats why I really appreciate your feedback.
Companions is still being playtested and some version of it will probably make it into our Vice Alley campaign book. My current concerns for Companions relates to how it may stack/work with stuff like Mastermind, Commander, and so on...
Please keep the feedback and suggestions coming! ;)
THANKS

What a great collection of ready made leagues. 8)
-
I have created a league using the Companions rules and have played it in a couple of games now. It does hold its own but while they may be better on the "offense" they are still just followers and tend to miss out on the "defense". In my case, they are not combat heavy but a more intellectual crew but I feel a more shooty group of Companions wouldn't fair much better in weathering fire. The main advantage seems to be in the ability to spread out and go further if your leader takes something like Commander (which mine did).
-
I'd like to see Companions reduced to 0 cost. The fact that you can't take a Sidekick is a fair trade for giving the Allies and extra ability. :o
-
Here's an updated copy of my Squirrel and Moose 'Duo' league (aka Sam and Dean). This version includes their Known Associate.

I think her main opponents will be people Mandy deems as "outsiders". Delivery Men, Painters, Repairmen, School Teachers, and stuff like that.
I've got one idea for a game where a new family is moving in to her apartment building and Mandy sets all kinds of traps to try and stop the Moving Men from unloading their truck and carrying things inside. Those durty ratz!! >:(

Ha, ha! My friends tease that I must work for some super-secret, chaos agency. Many of the countries I visit seem to break out in civil war, turmoil, or some other misfortune after I visit. Some examples:
Mali in 2009, civil unrest and reputed insurgency among Tuaregs today
Syria in 2005, racked by civil war today
Jordan in 1999...arriving at the time King Hussein dies
I was in the HaNegev Desert in Israel when Anwar Sadat was assassinated
There are more, but these are just a few they bring up, regularly. So, is there a chaos-worshipping cabal that hires me to travel the globe and spread the seeds of discord...? Sounds like a good Pulp story! lol
