Apparently I need to make a post to make sure my account stays active.
So, here's my WWI German army, in 28mm scale. They're a mix of Renegade and Great War miniatures. They're "Late War," intended to represent the army at about the time of the 1918 Spring Offensive.
I initially intended to flock the bases, but I may leave them bare mud.
And, yes, I have a larger British army (~220 figures) nearing completion. They should be done in a week or so, depending on how much progress I make this weekend.

Cool! :-* :-* I would definitely leave the mud bases.

Wow! That's a load of Germans. I'd leave the mud bases for most of them with a grass tuft here and there just to break up the sameness. Nice paint work. :)
-
I'll probably do that - add a few little tufts of grass and barbed wire here and there - once I'm done with the British.
-
Epic!
Don't add tufts. Mud is perfect.
-
That's some great stuff!
-
Thats a collection and a half 8)
Which rules will you be using?
cheers

Most impressive! I would leave them as they are they look like they mean business.
-
They look brilliant! I'd leave them as muddy bases, probably with just the odd bit of debris added, but no greenery.
-
An impressive force. I agree with the majority leave the bases plain mud with the addition of the odd bit of battlefield debris.
-
That mass is one hell of a great sight, tremendous
-
Now that's impressive. :)
-
Nice looking figs! :)
-
yay :D
big armies always look ace :-*
-
Epic stuff. :)
-

They initially started out with the intent of using GW Great War/Over the Top. I'm increasingly moving in the direction of using Through the Mud and Blood.
I'll probably end up using both.
-
Excellent! Another vote for the mud 8)
-
Cracking work - another vote to leave the bases as is :)
-
Lovely.
I vote for a bit of grass here and there. 1918 Kaiser's Battle and onwards to the Armistice... Lots of fighting in open country. Slogging in the mud...? Not so much. :)
-
great stuff , really impressive and through the mud and the blood rule (excuse the pun )
-
Excellent work !
Mud is awesome, maybe some little bit of barbed wire ?
Did you try the Bolt action rules ?

Did you try the Bolt action rules ?
No, I haven't - I thought they were WWII? Or are they easily adapted?
One other thing I didn't do, despite them being "Late War" German - no "tortoise camouflage" helmets. I don't know if I'll ever change this.
-
I wouldn't sweat it. I don't think it was anywhere near as common in the actual German army as it is in wargame armies.
-
They look great with the mud bases, Cessna! :o 8)

I agree. They also tie the army to "late 1918," while if I leave them as-is I can use them for 1917 or the Spring Offensives without getting nit-picky and grouchy...
-
Holy smokes! Das ist ein haufen Deutschen.Love the Mud ,Be the Mud,Keep the Mud.Great Job!You know you are going to hate to see those masterpieces cut to ribbons their first battle.Again Spectaculare job.

If you're thinking of adapting a set of WW2 skirmish rules, I think you'd do better with Rules of Engagement.

Apparently yes.
Some people have made some games with BA for late WWI and it wa cool.

Mein gott das ist wunderbar! Would love to see close ups of the armour.

Awesome figures! One of these days I will get sucked into the WW1 Western Front, but not (quite...) yet!
If you're looking for a set of "big skirmish" rules, I highly recommend "Through the Mud & the Blood" by TooFatLardies. Why kludge with a WW2 ruleset when you can get something "native" to the period?
-
Also usable as Freikorps if you want to play on after the end of WW1
Very nice indeed.

I missed this post earlier, sorry.

The Beutepanzer:

I deliberately left their markings a bit crude; that's how they appear in all of the photos I've seen of the real thing. They're all hand-masked airbrush work. The camouflage was also airbrushed. The streaks were done with oil paint and a mineral spirit/turpentine wash.
And an example of a few officers; I took this photo before I put the mud on their bases.

Nice finish on the vehicles, pics are a little dark but the figures look rather nice too.
Mud on the bases, if you looked at wargames forums you would think that it rained for the duration of the four years in Western Europe :)
-
Love the armour 8)

The effect you got on the tanks is superb. The airbrushing you did looks spot on.
-
Those tanks look spot on, lovely job.
-
Well Done :-*
What make are the tanks?
-
I ordered all of them - British (also seen in my other thread) and German - from Brigade Games.
-
Out of curiosity, has anyone heard any news of the rumored Bolt Action WWI book?

No news from Warlord, only reference I have seen is on the Osprey blog, down as a forthcoming release this September.

Whoops, I meant to make that post in the "Our Latest Great War Game Using Modified Bolt Action" thread, my apologies.
