Howdy Partner.
Spured by the train board (and a pending build), Red Dead Redemption, and the painting Posse. Below is my meagre offerings chronicling the birth of New silverton.

Figures are produced by Black Scorpion in resin, supplied with round slota bases. I've mounted on washers to reduce height as they are 32mm figures.

Ooooh!
Nice one, mate.
:-* :-*
I certainly recognise those fellas.
I just didnt realise that you had so many members in the Posse!
:o

I have some of hose same figure, and although they are wonderful sculpts, their size could be intimidating.
I shall be doing the same thing to reduce their height a little but with coins.
I was going to put them all in the same gang, but I think that I will spread them out so that just represent the taller fellas in the population.
;)
-
Thanks Mason!
I agree about their size, they are certainly chunkier too in comparison to Hasslefree. But they are very nice sculpts with versatile clothing which could suit a few different genres - even though the moulds are a little rough and require some cleaning. I found cutting off their tabs altogether and mounting on a 25mm washer brought them a few mm's down, but they are sill among the taller folks of New Silverton. But I don't feel they are 'too' noticeably different, I'm not going for storm troopers thankfully. ;)
I put in 5 into the Posse (Slim didn't make the cut).
bang.. crash... bang... bang... cut... cut.. bang.. slam..
New Silverton has it's first purpose built building. Oh look, Mr Rickets is showing us around.

It must be a rough town, there are already wanted criminals in the area, and the first building in town sells guns! Did Rickets just pocket one?
C&C welcome. I am undecided on basing it, it's already very sturdy... thoughts?
Cheers

Lovely job on the first building Matt! I really like the PJ on the Marshall too (I like them all but he's my favourite!).
-
:o
That is a lovely building, Matt.
Bloody gorgeous.
:-* :-* :-*
I see that there roof has a touch of rust and the weathering is top drawer.
I like the sign too.
;)
Basing: It is a matter of personal taste.
The only reason I do it is for added strength and stability.
You may well feel that it is not warranted and the building does look great without.
-
Loving the rust. :o
-
Yep, that's a lovely shop! (PS: Nice job on the Old Timer...that figure and his shotgun toting brother are my favorite figures of the BS line).
-
Great stuff :-*
Love the corrugated roof, that's come out a treat 8) 8)

Cracking job ;D

Brilliant stuff. You've used the same models as I was going to use for Marshal Leigh Johnson and Deputy Eli lol. Another great project to watch! You guys are putting me to shame!

aw, thanks steve. I like Mr Rickets, he has a cheerful glow and a sideways glance that are endearing i think.

Thanks Joroas, Paul and James for the comment on the rust. I find it difficult to look realistic, I end up going too far, or too orangey. It's nice to see that reality has lots of variables and oxidisation occurs differently in different contexts. I think I need to find some more good rusty roof shots for reference.
Cheers Paul, regarding durability it feels pretty hardy so far, as the base in composed of 2 layers of MDF and a lot of wood glue, so its pretty sturdy. I may leave of further basing as it will give it a larger storage footprint.
Old Timer...that figure and his shotgun toting brother are my favorite figures of the BS line).
Yeah, he certainly grows on you, and his 'black-beard' style brother is a heck of a character too!

No, no shame Gutbukkit, just commradory. I'm looking forward to being excited by your builds, to continue my humble offerings. I find this a bit of a solitary hobby, so sharing with you all makes it much more fun, as there is just one guy I game with locally and he is more interested in GW gaming, I prefer smaller/simpler skirmish games - oh and creating all the props. ;)
Cracking job ;D
;D thanks Mamma.
I have a few more figs to do before Christmas, then onto some more exciting scenery for New Silverton.
Ps.. when I start the train build, should that get posted on the train board or insert it in here? Just slap a finished pic in this thread for completeness sake?
Cheers

That box is lovely (similar to the 15mm shown recently in another thread). I might have to adopt a similar idea...hmm... lol (and I could use a box to hold all of the junk I need for SnS...)
-
The engines are looking really good! I would move that front wall of the cab forward though, you need more room for the back of the boiler, the engineer and the fireman. I would move it forward to the edge of the white plastic floor.
-
Yes, agreed Heisler. That was the plan ;)
Elbows, I 'borrowed' the idea from Sengennaru/Jack and his 15mm cowboy thread. :)
A little progress on my choo-choos. The locos are roughed out. I need to figure out how to finish detailing with pipes before making it impossible to undercoat/paint.

Great post! Thanks for sharing

The population of New Silverton swells as rumours of its silver deposits circulate among the wastes. A railroad entrepreneur, Dr Michael J Beresford, has entered town boasting of his mighty pre war traveling devices. The town seems rather taken by the idea. Everyone was last heard shouting "Iron Rails". A young blacksmith, Brenton Aybara Simth, has begun helping out in his uncle's gunsmithy. A beautiful lady Angelina Tricks has noticed the grime in town, and has begun ensuring the population is well bathed in one of her hot tubs.
The Bollard Gang has gained some new followers, after a campaign of recruitment in the wastes by Petey the Kidd and his two offsiders.
Two more gang members join in the hope of a quick buck, and to ward off the evils of the wastes- Blackbeard and Lee Vaughn.
Meanwhile - in the engine sheds at the old museum, work continues on repairing 'Old Smokey' and the 'Bandit Runner'.

Oh, Bertie!
Phantasmagorical!

Whereas the new citizens are all bloody wonderful, and I really love the Blacksmith's shirt, those trains are the dog's danglies!

I will just be happy with a choo-choo in the background for the Old West games, not a masterpiece like that, although there are plans for a more detailed scratchbuilt train at a later date.
But that is a different story....

Two trains?? Quite the metropolis you must have there. :)

So the trains are roughly done. I'm a little over them. What do you guys think? I think my main problem is the front lights, any tips to improve them/source light tutorials?
Mr Ricketts kindly shows us around the two baldwin Loco's being prepared for New Silverton.

Old No 4 is in a better condition than the later No12 after a recent restoration, but both are stained with use. Michael from Silverton Tramway Co runs a tight ship to maximise profits - and isn't afraid of unjust gains. No12 was missing a cab, nothing a little found I bar and corrugated steel hasn't sorted. The engineers wont be having fun on the dusty plains - especially if they get shot at.

Good stuff 8)
The lights are a little too big for my mind and maybe some sort of small, plastic lense (if you can source one) would help :)
cheers
James
-
Those look fantastic. Perhaps, just perhaps I should finish my own damn train. :`
-
I think they look great! I agree the headlights are bit big and both should have oil lanterns rather than one have the turbo. You might look at some of Grandt Line parts, there should be good replacements there if you want to do it. As long as they look good on the table it really doesn't matter. Awesome work.
-
Sexy stuff.
-
Thanks guys for the tips. A bit large eh? ??? They are scratchbuilt, and the 'turbo' is a toothpaste lid! lol
Ill investigate those options - any tips for painting the 'light' though?
-
Bloody brilliant, mate.
:-* :-* :-*
I would not bother with any lighting effects, as I cannot paint them.
:D
I would just paint them as if it is daylight and they are not lit.
Simples!

Perhaps that is the way to go. It means I still have to paint glass refraction and shading, but may be easier by far, as flat paint doesn't look very bright.

Swarovski crystals - from a bead store. Won't break the bank. Just pick the right size and color to suit your needs and taste.
Now, Number 4 is very nice. But that Number 12? Well, I've sat in the fireman's seat of a real steam locomotive in operation and I can tell you I wouldn't even consider being aboard number twelve under steam and underway unless it were dead slow. At the very least you need a cross member for the fireman and the engineer to hold onto - or you Will have a runaway locomotive, no maybe's about it. You might have seen otherwise in some TV show but I'm betting the steam you saw was for effect and there wasn't any pressure, any at all, in the boiler - if there was even a boiler. And I was in a good performing engine on good, level track. Put that thing on a grade with curves? Not with me aboard!
-
Yes No12 is a little ... Rustic in its comfort levels. :) I may need a little modification.
The jewel idea is a good one, will check it out.

A few more Black Scorpion folks have turned up at New Silverton. I have one left to finish now.
My to do list.
Base and paint train tracks
scratch build passenger cars
Add window frames to 2 storey hotel and weather
Add window frames to 1 story general store and weather
Paint remaining cow hand
Construct and paint mdf outhouse
construct and paint mdf wagon
create character cards for painted figures
And here is who has turned up!!! :D

Nice work, Matt.
Plenty of character in those chaps.

So long as he is not called Miopic Paulo, as Mr Blood did with his half-blind chap.

I think the fella in the apron has to be called Gar Sonn or Waiter Minute.

Off to take a squizz at Cappy and Dum-dum now....

-
Nice additions Matt.
I especially like Squinty McKay!
Thanks Steve. I guess it's bright out there! lol Perhaps Squinty McKay needs some sun glasses.
The rail that came in the train set is based with some embankment which is helpful, and clicks together rather easily. So there wasn't any need to glue sections together or to base on MDF.
Detail needed to be added, with ballast and grit, so using white glue small cork train ballast was glued down.
Due to its porous nature and flexibility I needed to add extra glue to make a hard gaming surface. I brushed with a 50-50 white glue water solution which was absorbed by the cork. Remarkably the water caused the initial glue to soften completely and turned it into a moveable mass of goo. It had difficulty sticking to the smooth plastic rails and has taken over 24 hours to dry hard. The water additionally caused the dye in the cork to leech out marginally. I placed thin lines of white glue on top to be absorbed and aid in giving a durable surface and added a sprinkling of sand for a finer texture. Hopefully paint will help it all stick together, the glue has started to harden, and it seems to be working out well.

Great stuff, Matt!
It is almost there already.
:-* :-*
That raised track is very handy. Good to see you getting stuff done on your train, mine is "delayed awaiting further announcements!"
lol
That did make me chuckle.
You have made me realise that I should just damn well build the track at least, if I have not got time for the train yet.
Easy and straightforward enough and should not take too long.
:D
-
Such slackers, you two started the January train challenge. ;D lol at least get the track, then you can have Indians blowing it up, railroad settlement brawls and a station in town. Basing with sand and mdf is pretty straight forward for you guys. Not sure when I will get operational passenger cars though.
Cheers

I know, mate.
Terrible aint it?
::)
I have all the necessary stuff, sir, and I shall get on with it at some point.
The track will certainly been done soon-ish, the train much later.
The only difference with my track is that it has to span the Creek as well, so it would be better if I did both at the same time.... ;)
-
Nah I don't think it would Paul. Doing the creek itself is a large job, the track a small job. If you are doing modular track I say go for it and leave one straight section, or do it all and use styrene when it comes to making a bridge. If your going for a sculpted game board like Steve's Boer War build, then certainly do it all in one hit.
I like Steve's bridge, and may attempt a few shaped terrain tiles and a tressle bridge at some point.
Just my thought. Mixing the colour for one section will not be too difficult, and if you''re off, shade 2 pieces to be placed near it ;)
Cheers
Matt
-
Ok, I got excited and painted the tracks. Grey brown ballast, red ochre and ochre dirt, sienna rails, silver top on rails, blue brown oil streak wash down the middle, and a few clumps of scenic grass. Please excuse the phone photos.
I think it works, what do you say Blinky Bill, Abigail and Upset Max?

Hahahaha, just you wait till they get automated jalopies that can drive themselves. The locals won't know what hit them ;)
Constable Bertrand - the truck crossing the tracks in the third photo, what kit is that/how heavy is the conversion? I like the look of it.
It's based on a Tamiya 1/48 Steyer kit, with some plastic sprue, I bar styrene and v groove styrene, a pretty 'basic' conversion but stretching my ability. You can see the build in my Post Apoc thread (includes 2 headed cows) I mix genre's in my gaming, and its fun because I can paint what ever I want. :D The direct link is here http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=57694.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=57694.0)

Thanks, I think it works. Will need to take better pics but they show basically what I have done, and it blends enough with the board tiles for now.
Should I build a valley with a rail bridge???? ???

I agree - this is beyond average. LAF makes us ALL achieve better than out there in the wargaming wilderness.
-
Yeah Matt, I really like your stuff. I'd love to game on it!
-
Oh I don't know Paul, I've given you a few leads for SSS and a way forward while your eyes are a bit iffy. ;) ;D
Go for it mate.
I know, mate, only pulling ya leg.
;)
As for those cars etc: It is not for SSS, my plan for Khanistan is more of a Spy-fi thing.
The winter setting is just that, plain old winter, not nuclear-winter.
This is to act as a nice balance for the other half of the Spy-fi thing which will be set in the South Asian jungle.... ;)
And regarding my eyesight issue, it is just figures that are giving me grief, scenery is much more forgiving and I shall make a start on my train tracks soon.
:)
Git!

That is probably the most accurate way of describing the LAF that I have seen.
Everyone raises their own personal bars on here, to the benefit of all.
Well said, that man!

...it great stuff you do 8)
I bet your finish rate is better than mine as well lol

Thanks guys :D this place is pretty helpful. Ive learned heaps watching all the stuff that pops up. The 'candy' is very encouraging, and sometimes the 'boot' is just what is needed aswell ;) Ive got plans for lots of stuff, but thankfully have tried to resist starting them so far! lol lol lol

Oh sorry, I keep getting that confused, back during the Pappis challenge you were quite curious of the whole SSS thing and put it off till next time. I guess the time hasnt arrived yet ;)
Yeah dirty the suckers up and they will be brilliant, for either setting. Especially if you get some of the utility/4x4 ones too. There is a red old school landy in the set too. Might look nice in jungle green ;)

Some works in progress around town. Landon Ricketts takes the town journalist and investigates.

The Sheriff reports that 'Tall' Fiona (32mm Malifaux) is a very friendly gal and is in New Silverton for a business trip - she want's to open a shop. Unfortunately the Sheriff found himself unable to press Fiona for any further details of her plans. Though watching her finger her hidden Derringer in his peripheral vision he surmised she could look after herself and gave her 2 days before she would cause any trouble.
Cheers

Nice PJ on 'Fiona', mate.
:-*
I have just taken the plunge and bought a couple of Malifaux figures in the hope that they will scale up ok with my Black Scorpion stuff.
How do they work for you?

Thanks Paul, I based her as low as possible. I think as a tall human she works fine with BS and DUST figures (so no worries for you there)... hasslefree and she is a big un (but workable)... em4 scavengers (small 28's) not really. That said, In a western based skirmish game size isn't a big issue, and she is just the soiled dove I was looking for. I'm not sure how old glory shape up or other western figures, but i think you will be fine as most of your gangs are BS. Let me know how you go with them, I'd be interested, as I haven't seen the rest of the Malifaux range in the flesh.

I was inspired by some amazing terrain building on LAF (Bibbles, Steves) to have a 'shake of the sauce bottle' myself. A quick trip to the hardware store saw me in possession of liquid nails and a sheet of MDF. Retrieving thick foam-core from the supply vault, and a bag of cornice cement, with the essentials in hand I queued the Top Gear music and began to make a mess.
The bark was borrowed from a garden bed, >:D and slow roasted in the oven.

It should be modular for a few different setups. Using the liquid nails I bulked out the cliff face with the bark (any mess will be covered in PVA and sand) set aside to dry, then smeared over with the cornice cement. 2 Days later and the cement is still drying, but it is coming along. It has shrunk a little and cracked (especially where thick) but the next coat of pva/sand should fix that.
I was worried that the shrinking cement would warp the MDF tiles, thankfully they have remained flat thus far.
Next step to PVA/Sand and apply smaller debri. 2 saturdays remaining before "show time"...
Cheers

PVA, Sand with liberal craft paint (red oxide, yellow ochre and sienna) turns it into this!

220mm x 300mm that fits in an IKEA PAPPIS box. :D originally it was 310mm but that didn't go well with the dimensions of the mdf sheet I bought.
That looks bloody excellent Matt, very nice work indeed. I love the colours.

After the Convention on the weekend I had some time to take some pictures of my finished western buildings.
The buildings are Aetherworks here in Sydney. They are basic, but a good price (for a sydney sider) and rather solid construction that goes together without much fuss. They even come with instructions.
I used Masons great sign tutorial (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=65904.0) as before, and think they came out rather well. I added window/door frames with balsa and card, and a corrugated cardboard roof.

A few more images are over on my blog if your interested: http://makeandpaint.blogspot.com.au/2014/10/aetherworks-buildings-and-few-new-folks.html
I also slapped some paint on "The General" from Forgotten Glorious' Civil war range.

These were really beauties in the flesh - but I had such little time to admire them, what with being pursued by an axe wielding maniac!!

Thanks Fury, that's really kind. Well, you could have shot her (if you had ammo) ;) lol ... And at least you were spared the blood bath. :/
I added a little more weathering to the white after the game, it was a bit bright and flat.
What game are you prepping at the moment?

Aie Sir, that's true. Most of my gaming so far tends towards a dystopian scavenging 1940's.. with a little retro sci Fi for good measure.
I figure in a post apocalypse the many museums will be a great place to get some heavy duty gear - most have some things that work.

As a rather versatile terrain piece. It will see use in Retro Scifi (Fallout), Old West, Post Apocalyptic, and even Space Opera (Star Wars).

Landon wanders around the new structure in town - and examines the blue gods that control his fate.
It has taken a little while, but it certainly contains the dice on the board. I have yet to master a roll, I can get close to a "6" but it's not certain. So in that regards - it works! :D

Thanks richard, the inspiration certainly came from Paul and others on the forum/net - and hopefully will solve the damage caused by rampaging dice to minis and terrain.

After some 10 years the New Silverton parish has finally gained a new church and house. The local minister N.D Wolfwood is particularly happy as the last 10 years hes been having his gatherings in the local hotel. Which has seen possibly a higher patronage than otherwise but has had the downside of frequent interruptions to the gathering.
Based on some mdf builds with some extra bits and details added.
First up is the frontier cottage. Featuring a brick chimney and cork brick fireplace, and a small veranda out the front. I added corrugated card to the roof to keep it in keeping with the town. The church and house have added corrugated card to keep them in keeping with the rest of the township. There's plently of corrugated iron in town with all the mining and industry around.

Ooooh, love those weathered metal roof plates. They look awesome and add so much to the buildings. Awesome finish!
-
Good looking stuff all around - buildings and people.
At the start of the thread some years back, you said
Thanks Joroas, Paul and James for the comment on the rust. I find it difficult to look realistic, I end up going too far, or too orangey. It's nice to see that reality has lots of variables and oxidisation occurs differently in different contexts. I think I need to find some more good rusty roof shots for reference.
Though I think you're fine, for anyone looking for such reference pics, don't forget Model RR sites and YouTube for weathering Model RR buildings.
You also left Slim out of your posse back in the beginning. Good decision, IMHO. Always been troubled by that figure. Between his stance and how high he's wearing his gunbelt I'm not sure how well he'd do in a firefight, though I'm certain in a typical TV western high noon, fast draw, life or death matchup like the show Gunsmoke had for its opening,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbo6tp4UgII (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbo6tp4UgII)
not only would he fare about as well as Marshal Dillon's opponent, the same would be true if he was up against anyone whose draw speed was faster than one that could be timed with a desk calendar. :o
-
Thanks Malebolgia :)
Terre, thanks for looking back into the archives :D
I was looking at heaps of refference images for the roof this time round, and what surprised me was the images often showed only partial weathering with some of the galvanised steel still being in place, thus the new approach this time around.
Ooh that's a quick draw! Much quicker than a desk calendar lol
-
Missed these mate, lovely 8)
-
Fantastic weathering and rust affects on those building.
-
Nice additions.
And perhaps an after action report due circa 2032 or so?! :o
Nice to see all the photos still show up from the original posts.
-
Thanks James and Tom :)
Hahaha you know Fifteen I may have a bat rep by 2032 ;D
Most games are more post apoc than pure Wild West. But I do have some Ned Kelly figures to paint so may try a round of fist full of lead.
Isn't it amazing that the old pics are still there. I've been posting to blogger since the beginning and thankfully that was added to the google business, so here's to another 30 years of photos being viewable. :)
So glad I've missed that photo bucket removal malarkey.
-
Nice job on those buildings. Love the rusty effect on the corrugated roofs...
-
I continued a few more lazer cut buildings, I picked these up from Dark Castle in Australia, https://darkcastleterrain.com/ (https://darkcastleterrain.com/) they have a great range of terrain from a hunch of different manufacturers and designers, so watch out for scale as there may be a bit of design language change, but they had some really nice pieces at quite competitive prices. I picked this cottage up last year during their black Friday sale and it came out just as nice as I had hoped. They even had some small chairs and tables thrown in with the kit. I love it when designers fill up the lazer bed like that.
I created some doors at the same scale as my original Wild West terrain from Aetherworks (now no longer on their store) to unify the builds a little more. Otherwise just some paint, scatter debris, coffee stirrers and printed wallpaper on the ink jet.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg0Ow9eEd25XwjUzg564Do6obTbHfCI4LLjdmCZMOcqMixbRD9j2YfjTath0hBfS-og5_7zo8E2QYvNYPxACozhe--E8QmxzoGlFN5CCwJuhdW9NziSuBXCQMB8byVXeS_LS3LfGP7dtvOkcqnP53mUbnVwVLsYoFFSmeQEJ4C5GEcyDxJzo6I_1tkkfK2d)
The deputy is having a look around for any bush rangers. They seem to be long gone.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg96yJozzYh3wmC7-dYN6_h2giyC_-DE-WMShFXlEQp-FZyo5uIzvTGrRCqjPwcEOQAgF8YtJb9RT-gGcCD1yJpV3TImD7kTAzufCpJN82JzUZrVibjQTiQLdrse_IaoiuE95ue42gEWJhYFme-rFoKwRCWCTa2j9PyUo5nfb8bqvGC0VnKFpH2geUa8yvX)
I leaned into the orangey rust a bit more this time around, perhaps some artistic license, but reality certainly offers plenty of variations. I added some coffee stirrers on the front for some fence pailings on the street side.
Because.. you know... a home is a home.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEidCHmk333rlS0xG1kcvNbTQz59YSvzOKH9lA9xpMDyAM1p6qZBrvT44vpp5FItjoSlAkYZDSa4vVY7X37TNwMUiMogSfAxPDFBB1Q1KO3Tl0hLl8fK08oUpGizdGGlXDuu0SkHP2fWstnj7NnlrwvmvtN6-ghbws1vYrNkzQViiQMYB2MHI9fy5-1hrApq)
There's 2 rooms inside, and a 3rd as the back kitchen/toilet which slides away and can be removed to make a smaller house. I found some wallpaper designs on the internet and printed them on the inkjet, wouldn't to keep the pva more thick as water seeps through and makes the inkhet run. Thankfully I found the small bleeds I did get provided some appropriate weathering. Weathered buildings really give a licence to cover up errors, its great.

The Log cabin scaled a little larger but as long as they aren't next door it's very minimal. I filled in a fireplace from cork bricks and coffee stirrers. there was a bit of a gap in the build otherwise and the cork looks lovely compared to flat lazercut rock design.

I also finally caved and bought some overpriced coloured birch seeds from Greenstuff at the local game store, goodness they are amazing and making the place look a little more wind blow. Thanks for the tip LAF. I guess New Silverton has or had some trees after all.

I really like your collection, especially how you paint corrugated board.

What a fantastic collection and I love how you've painted them up and added little bits and bobs to make the kits really, truly shine :o!
I too have been experimenting with wallpaper designs printed on the inkjet. I find a Pritt stick does a decent job of getting it stuck to the wall.

Those cabins look grand. Your figures should be tickled pink to fight over them!

Thanks Freddy, I've chosen to keep corrugated roofing as a theme across my West and PostApoc terrain to lend a little more flexibility to the pieces.
Ah yes a glue stick would probably be sufficient wouldn't it, thanks Legionnaire! Great tip!
Thanks Jim, yes they love having a good shoot out in town and spraying lead around the place. :)
Cheers
