So I just started this project over the weekend.... Some adobe/sandstone buildings and tents... Nothings painted yet and the unfinished one on the left is going to be a dice tower... Not sure how much free time I'm going to have, but thought I'd share my progress on the board...

That looks like it's going to be some pretty cool terrain! I look forward to seeing it develop. Good start to your stay with us!
And congratulations also on having chosen a very silly username!
-
Looking great! I like those tents. Well done!
HAVE FUN
-
Looking really good, keep posting your progress. I'd like to know how you made those tents?
-
Is that glue soaked paper towel laid over a framework for the tents? It looks quite effective. Nice use of cardboard for the buildings as well!
-
Welcome! The terrain's off to a good start. I like the tents.
-
excellent tents and the buildings are well done too. keep it up and post pics when they're done.
-
Thanks! The tents are tissue and glue... I still need to make some entrance flaps for them and paint em up... Just need to get some more free time...
Also picked up some matchbox cars on Ebay... I think they'll fit in well...

-
Got a bit more done tonight... I like how these walls are turning out...
(http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2886/12127878795_c3c5f9ec38.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/29875086@N02/12127878795/)(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7393/12129772365_007416af90.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/29875086@N02/12129772365/)
-
It's coming together very nicely. What are you using for the texture?
-
Just sprinkled sand on watered down PVA... Seems like two coats works best...
Also thought I'd try for some tile roofs...
(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3684/12138704094_830d141af8.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/29875086@N02/12138704094/)
-
First couple pieces painted... Need to finish the walkways and add some shades or banners from the poles...

-
They look really great.
-
Like the colours on the buildings.
Are the tents built over a wire frame and if so did you solder it together.
Looking forward to seeing the corrugated roof tiles.
All the best
-
Looking great! THANKS for sharing. :D
-
The tents forms are just scraps of cardboard, then q-tips for the top. I just cut off the fuzzy bits and put four together to a point using masking tape... I may have ruined them with my paint though... Will have to see if I can salvage...
Anyway, finished the tower...

-
Thanks - the tower looks good, I like the corrugated tiles.

I got the terrain on the table this week, now just gotta come up with a good pulp scenario for the setting... Any suggestions?

This looks like it would be perfect for "The Lost Keys" scenario. "Trail of Clues" would also work well for that setting.
HAVE FUN
-
Thanks, I definitely want to give those scenarios a try--I guess I meant, suggestions on a good narrative story line that I could base some scenarios around... Looking for some story ideas...
I picked up some Casablanca type minis--need to get those painted up...
-
Have you thought about basing it on of your favourite books or films? Sometimes using elements from 2 or 3 books/films works. You can use old adventures and bring them into the Pulp era, 'The Man Who Would Be King' or maybe even using the storyline from The Three Musketeers and updating it? 'King Solomon's Mines', 'She', 'Tintin', 'Casablanca', 'Beau Geste', 'Adele Blanc Sec', 'The Mummy', 'Indiana Jones', 'Rocketeer', 'The Phantom', 'The Shadow', 'Allan Quartermain', 'Librarian', 'Jack Hunter' etc.
I think some French Foreign Legion troops would look good in your set-up, 'Biggles Foreign Legionnaire', 'The Flying Carpet'.
-
Looking at that awesome table, I think it screams a hunt for the kidnapped daughter of the (fill in the blank). Rumors say she's gone off and joined a new cult, while others say a certain despot has a taste for young, wealthy nubile ladies and she's bound for a harem if not rescued in time. Still others say she was kidnapped for ransom money to fund the rebellion brewing in the outlying areas...
Anything "click" with the leagues you have planned?
Mike Demana
-
Sounds pretty awesome... I have some bound captives that need painting... And maybe a squad of gendarmes...
-
And finished off a bunch of small buildings, so there's a nice maze on the table...

Gonna make some palm trees, and maybe some merchant stalls... Gotta add some flavour... "For special friends of Rick's..."
-
o_o Thanks, Mike! Your village is really inspiring. You created a lot of realistic buildings in a relatively short time and inexpensively. The details (floors, ladders, awnings) all great. Thanks for sharing!
-
Fantastic! Love those ladders and perilous walkways crossing the rooftops! :-*
Oh, looks like fun!
...I guess I meant, suggestions on a good narrative story line that I could base some scenarios around... Looking for some story ideas...
When I get stuck for a story, I normally make a few rolls on the Plot Points, At Whose Behest, and What's at Stake tables. That usually gives me enough ideas to piece together a fun storyline.

Nice! Good stuff!
Mike Demana

Really good looking terrain. I especially like the larger buildings.

Brilliant!
I'll have to copy this.
Your lovely building also reminds me that all I've got for my walled garden is the walls. :D
-
Beautiful work! Not only does it look great, its alos a very playable piece of terrain. :-*
THANKS for sharing!
-
Not a lot of free time this week, but have most of the main gate built...
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7354/12550854784_e7e31277a4.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/29875086@N02/12550854784/)
-
Great stuff in this thread. I may nick some of your ideas ;)
-
Nice work! Thanks for the WIP pic.
-
Thanks all!
Finished the main gate... I think it's coming out pretty good...

Excellent work! I really like the hanging banners and the bamboo over the windows. :-* :-*
HAVE FUN
-
Wow... where'd you get those window coverings? Laser cut?
-
They're from a Pegasus Hobbies Chemical Plant kit. I duplicated the form by cutting out black plastic mesh with a hobby knife... The thinner mesh ones work better inside buildings, and I'll use the blockier ones on the walls...
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7449/12577693383_6c5bea6e5d.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/29875086@N02/12577693383/)
-
Hey! Great idea!
-
Dang! Two ideas for the black plastic mesh in a short space of time. Very creative...excellent looking buildings. I'll PM you my address so you can mail them to me... lol lol lol
Seriously, great job scratch-building!
Mike Demana
-
These turned out great :-* and the bamboo window covering is a great idea!
LB
-
Thx!
I started 4 walls and 4 towers.. That way I can form a long wall, or a building with an interior courtyard... This is turning out to be a pretty enjoyable build...
(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3707/12599443044_19f238e983.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/29875086@N02/12599443044/)
-
So, finished the walls and towers... Flexible enough to make a large wall...
(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5504/12728354124_5d1f2f21b1.jpg) (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/29875086@N02/12728354124/")
Scatter pieces...

A small courtyard...
(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3690/12728395784_205aa22510.jpg) (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/29875086@N02/12728395784/")
Or a large courtyrad...

-
This is an absolutely inspirational thread.
Wonderful work.
-
Wow! Very cool buildings, and the fretwork idea is genius. Thanks for sharing.
-
Great work, I love the set-up for the large courtyard.
-
Very inspiring stuff! I'm most impressed by your efficiency, you have managed to make lots of great looking terrain in just a few months. Keep up the good work!
-
Nice work! :-* Great idea for the fretwork.
-
Great post, thanks for all the pics and inspiration.
-
So I got this out on the table and tried it as scatter, and it worked really well... Sort of a mountain wall kind of feel... Maybe thats just because of the pines...
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7351/13074440714_c28a96963b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/29875086@N02/13074440714/)
Of course now the table is crying out for a pagoda, so I'm working on a dice tower...
(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3721/13282603863_b1cf165cab.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/29875086@N02/13282603863/)
-
i
hate love your work. as if there wasn't enough already to make me feel inspired/guilty.
-
Utterly superb! You have inspired and given me answers to some of my own building dilemmas.
That table is brilliant!
Please carry on. I would like more.
-
That is really good stuff! Richard
-
Pretty much done... Gotta put the screens on the bottom floor...
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7338/13323639463_31ba2bc9d2.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/29875086@N02/13323639463/)
-
Beautiful work - the details and colours work really well.
-
Haven't been posting much, but have still been working on some terrain pieces... Will get some photos up soon...
In the meantime, I came up with a very quick way to churn out trees... Take a plastic plant aquarium mat, and pull off some tuffs--use the ones that are attached by little pegs... Stick em on a golf tee...
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3836/14291940258_2250f53960.jpg) (http://"https://www.flickr.com/photos/29875086@N02/14291940258/")
I added a little bark texture by using some masking tape on the tee and painting it ahead of time... Just need to bend the top branches so they cover the tip more, and they're the easiest trees I've ever made...
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3925/14503059743_82aafb1cc2.jpg) (http://"https://www.flickr.com/photos/29875086@N02/14503059743/")
-
Superb! :-*
My big limit is that I've never done scenery, just painted miniatures.
So I respect the work of other wargamers that create their own scenery :)
-
If you could bottle what your doing here, you would be a millionaire and we'd all be broke. ;)
-
Thanks... Here's whats on the workbench right now... The minarets are separate pieces so this can be configured as a mosque or just a plain building... Mostly just painting left to do once the glue dries... Plan to get it on the table for a tournament this weekend...

Most Excellent!!!

I like how the building is accessible from the back. From the front it looks very solid.
-
That's pretty groovy. Great for Pulp but I woul have thought almost equally applicapable to a backwater desert planet in a galaxy far, far away!
-
:) :) :) well done sir!
these are a most excellent use of materials and i heartily approve and will be using some of same in my attempts at modeling . thank you for sharing. :) :) :)

WOW :o
just wow...
-
So switching gears back to the asian themed table--I thought I could mix it up by putting the modular hills over blue cloth and adding a river theme... I spent some time this weekend making some simple bridges, and then added a teahouse/shrine and a gate...
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5574/14587876942_cced0e1704.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/oe5FzG)
Will get a full table photo when I get a game in later this week...
-
Those look great!
-
I do like those!
-
Fantastic stuff 8)
-
Thanks! I used a blue cloth and some modular hills to try a river/delta theme... Not the best light for photos, but...

That's a really cool table setup. Never really thought of doing lots of separate islands, but I will be trying this out at some point.
-
That is really impressive work! Richard
-
Yet another great table I won't be playing on :'(
-
That looks like a really great lay-out, any more photos?
-
I'll take more pics next time I get it on the table...
In the meantime, I started work on a new test piece... Different vibe...

Nice building, what are the corner slabs made of? ???
-
Looking good! Can't wait to see how it progresses. ;)

Nice building, what is the corner slabs made of? ???
This stuff...
http://www.joann.com/sticky-back-foam-sheets-bright-colors/prd51960.html
It's a sticky back adhesive foam sheet... Kinda like the middle of a sheet of foam core. A bit softer, but very easy to work with...
-
This is looking good, clever idea on the corners. I've ordered some sticky foam sheets off eBay!
-
This is great work, and very inspiring! I need to get on with my own pulp city...
-
brilliant! :) :) :)
-
A little slow going, but took some photos before priming the whole thing black... Painted some of the floors... Decided on a warehouse style--more for gameplay reasons...

Ok, so, a few photos of the river/delta layout... Played a couple games of Infinity on it tonight...

Bravo Herr Mouse!!
-
I love it. What a great set up.
-
Nice looking stalls. That's some very useful terrain. :D
-
Thanks! It's pretty easy to churn out too... Added some hardware stalls and potted plants to bulk it up...

Fantastic. Love the color they will add to your table.

Got them on the table tonight... Lately I've been thinking that I need to supplement my gaming budget... Would anyone be interested in a commission set of market stalls?

They look brilliant, but I'm afraid I've already got a set of stalls I did for our Sudan games.
-
Actually, if anyone is interested, please send me a PM... I don't want to clutter up this thread, and I can post on a sales board...
-
Found some wooden "pickle barrels" at the craft store... Scored 'em with an etching tool and ink'd em... Ended up making a few plot points... Ammo cache, digging site, box of dynamite...

That's exactly how I do my barrels too! Tedious, but I love the results! :D :D :D
-
More inspirational work, thanks.

Seeing all those awesome ships people are making... Had to start working on my own...

Ok, starting a longer term project, building on that test piece from a few weeks back... I think I'm going to build a set of about 5 warehouses... I think this could also suit a dockyard setting, so I can bring my boat in play... The interiors are going to encourage changing levels, and all the buildings will have 2nd floor entrances that can be connected by a walkway or elevated plaza...
I'm really liking these craft foam sheets... Pencil lines and xacto cuts make great wooden planks. A line and a series of holes looks like rivetted sheet metal. Bricks and corner stones are easy too...

Do you have some tips for working with the craft foam? I've only used it as base areas for area terrain. It never seems the easiest thing to cut precisely?
I'd certainly never thought of embossing it to get texture.

Well, I usually stick it to some cardboard before I start cutting it. The craft foam isn't very firm, and can also tear if you don't use a sharp blade. I make cuts on the foam side and cut through to the underlying cardboard. I find if I cut the cardboard side up, then it tends to tear.
This can make it awkward if you need to draw guidelines for features and don't want to mark up and score the foam... To avoid that, you can cut out your forms first, then attach the foam sheet and cut off all the excess (like tracing an outline).
For texture, a dull pencil point makes for a great etching tool and I use the end of a bent paperclip to make rivets or nail holes... For the wooden grain effect, I just freehand cut a series of messy slices in each plank with an xacto. Looks great if you ink it with some brown...
I prime all my terrain using black gesso--and I think that adds a bit of firmness to the craft foam and protects the texture...
Like most things, I think it's just trial and error--but I've found it very useful and much easier to carve than insulating foam, foam core, wood etching or plasticard...

Just read through this thread and I take my hat off...I love all the bits you have done

Thanks for taking the time to write that up, it's very helpful.
The way the boat has come out really shows how well it works.
-
No worries--it's great stuff to work with...
Here's two of the warehouses, and a bunch of windows... I decided that cutting windows out of granny grating still left these little nubs--so I went back to chicken wire... I like this external shell concept, where I can wall off openings or add windows/doors as need be... Gives the facades some depth...

I've got some family coming into town, so this project might slow down some...

Awesome once again. Also, that boat is superb!!

Building a little garage attachment now...

Really, really cool! Once again very jealous of your speed and quality of the product.

Epic. :-* ;)

Not looked for a while but you have been very productive. Results are brilliant from simple material, so impressed.
Appreciate the WIP photos so we can see the base and then the finished article.
Inspirational o_o

Got a little side-tracked... But also inspired for more brick work... Started on some canals and bridges. The Carnevale Kickstarter is awfully shiny...

Superb job :-*

Well, the painting took a while... Looks a little washed out, but I think that will work once I get some buildings out there... Going to build a Venice board, got excited by the Carnevale KS... But, should be a nice exotic locale for pulp too...

Nice work! Those Carnevale miniatures are really cool. We've picked up a few as well.
-
Really nice! So basically you took slabs of blue foam, inscribed the pavement and stones and then painted it?
I'm planning to do a dockside soon, so good to know!

Yep... Time consuming, but pretty easy. I figure I can make some smaller detail sections for docks and piers and change up the table, but this gives a good flexible base...
I scored the foam with a hobby knife, then used an old knitting needle to run along the cuts... I wanted small bricks (1/2" x 1/4"), so I went with a double-basket weave pattern to save some time... This let me use a ruler to cut a 1/2" grid first, then freehand the middle cuts... I did one piece as a 1" x 1/2" running bond. A lot faster and still looks good, but I went for a little extra detail...
-
A little slowdown the last month or so... Work and "real life" getting in the way...
But hey, got this project off my work bench... Which is now steaming off to other waters...

How did I miss this one. Very impressive.
The topic title is misleading or we don't have the same definition of "some" lol

Fantastic.
This thread is nothing short of inspiring.
