Title: Mister Matthews painting table....
Post by: matthais-mouse on February 03, 2014, 08:05:15 PM
Howdy everyone,
Well 2014 has been a great year for painting this years so far for me, although I have not done much on my Mordheim warband, I have managed to paint 7 miniatures over the last few months in between my other hobbies...
Here are a few of them for everyone to see and hopefully comment/criticise.
First up a High Elf lore master. This is plastic I know but I dont have many metal minis on the paint desk yet  ::)
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o12/yay-free-lemons/DSCN7592_zpse43eb6a4.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/yay-free-lemons/media/DSCN7592_zpse43eb6a4.jpg.html)
Second up is an Empire captain. I have been trying this new technique for weapons and my first few attempts are these miniatures and an eldar wraithlord (photos to come soon) Its quite easy once you have a practice and get over the fear of doing it wrong. but always have a paint pallet and all the paints to hand so you dont have to keep going back to it.

Hope you all like these and I shall try up date this thread as much as possible  :)

Matt

Thank you for the kind words  :) Im looking at doing a tutorial of how to do these at some point as it is a great little technique to learn.

I have been busy at the last week or so both on the painting table and I have finally got myself a job, so I have had my first day there too.
Here are the pictures.

First of is hasslfrees professor beatie, i bought this as it reminded me of inspector Robert Colbeck from edward marstons books ( A GREAT series if your a mystery novel reader) So i bought and painted it up. He may even get used in games like CoC.
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o12/yay-free-lemons/DSCN7802_zps08e968ed.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/yay-free-lemons/media/DSCN7802_zps08e968ed.jpg.html)
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o12/yay-free-lemons/DSCN7800_zps647319ee.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/yay-free-lemons/media/DSCN7800_zps647319ee.jpg.html)

Next up is gamesworkshops plastic wight king. I really like this model and really enjoyed painting him up. I think he is going to have a place in my fluffy vampire counts/empire army eventually...
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o12/yay-free-lemons/DSCN7803_zps65a5d359.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/yay-free-lemons/media/DSCN7803_zps65a5d359.jpg.html)
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o12/yay-free-lemons/DSCN7804_zpscc7adf61.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/yay-free-lemons/media/DSCN7804_zpscc7adf61.jpg.html)
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o12/yay-free-lemons/DSCN7807_zps16978a8c.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/yay-free-lemons/media/DSCN7807_zps16978a8c.jpg.html)

This next model I really like but really hate at the same time. Now the fact he has a peg leg is the part that drew me to him, however the positioning of the arms is AWFUL I cannot stress that enough, i thought that I would have been able to move the pose a bit but decided against it.
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o12/yay-free-lemons/DSCN7808_zpsdd2512b8.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/yay-free-lemons/media/DSCN7808_zpsdd2512b8.jpg.html)

The last one is an inquisitorial henchman for my inquisitor lord's retinue. Given to me by a good friend of mine.

I really like the painting on the swords of the High Elf and the Empire Captain. Personally I would add a highlight or two to the faces on those models as to me they seem to get a bit lost, rather than making a focal point.

The rest of the models look great.

The trouble I have with faces is getting the highlights in the right areas. I have a few sprues of heads at the moment that I am trying techniques on using one of the old white dwarf articles to get the highlights and shading in the right places and once I have these down to a T I shall re-do the heads of those models. They do actually have 4 layers already but it is hard to tell as I use very slight changes in colours. I may have to start using more drastic colour changes  :)
Thanks for the criticism though  :)

Ahhh a bit more modelling.

For this update is a recent purchase that arrived earlier today. It is the Scibor miniatures sword master and I have to admit as a model it is great looking...... HOWEVER the condition it was in when it arrived was awful. There was a huge amount of flash, mould lines and even two parts were broken. I am however not using those parts for this particular example it is worth noting to all interested in purchasing Scibor items, be careful.....
Now the hammer on this has been added by myself, I wanted to use him as a warrior priest in my warhammer army/ DND character.

A very long time since I added anything here so here goes nothing.
I am currently working through a variety of things, five dark elf dark riders, a captain jack aubrey (bought from a fellow forum member) and also from a fellow forum member I recently finished my Battlefleet gothic fleet, more of those to come later.

Nice work.

Faces are hard, though your Professor Beatie looks pretty good. There are some good diagrams in Kevin Dallimore's first book and also I found Dave Andrews' guide to painting an Empire spearman in the first How to Paint Citadel Miniatures very helpful.

My method is base coat with GW dark flesh. then paint GW Dwarf Flesh over the whole face just leaving Dark Flesh in the crevices. Then highlight forehead brows nose upper cheeks chin lips and eye lids with GW Elf Flesh. Further highlights can be done adding white to the Elf Flesh.

For female flesh start with the Dwarf Flesh then add a light flesh wash before highlighting with Elf Flesh  then further highlights adding more white until the desired result is achieved.

this method will change when I eventually run out of the old GW paints!

Faces are one of the tougher aspects of a model for me. Especially the eyes haha.

I shall have to have a look for the first edition of how to paint citadel miniatures to read it. I have the white dwarf that the eavy metal team did a load of how to's and they are really useful, although found that after doing the prof beatie mini.

I tend to do so many skin types its hard to keep track, with my dark elves I like to do a grey blue skin tone or very pale flesh tone.

As with you I am still running on old GW paints, even some of the screw top not clicky tops haha  lol

I hope it wasn't too painter-unfriendly regardless. :) (I still kick myself for not making the hands fit the wrist socket a bit better. They really could use a bit of filing down!)

It did take several attempts to get the hand correct but it did get knocked off by my dog and has had a bit more glue than needed looking at it  ??? I solved it by drilling a bit more in to the wrist when I had it on correctly the first time.

I never knew you designed/sculpted him  :o ( or am I reading that wrong?)

Well after several evenings at the painting desk I have almost finished my marauder horsemen and thanks to a very kind fellow forum member I have got my standard bearer of the unit finished too.  :)
Photos will be on hold till the 1st of August for the army painters 2014 thread  :D

And here is the WIP shot of the hammerhead.
I will be using 4 colours in the camo scheme and the grey lines will be painted over once I fill each one. I would use an airbrush for this...... but I dont have one haha  :D YET  ;)

A couple more updates :)
I have been sculpting bases, I use das modelling material from the works (£3.99 a block) its easy to work with and when dry it adds a good bit of weight to the base too.
The first one is for a warg rider (bought from a fellow member on here) just a before and after shot im afraid...

and two of the bases for my warhounds with a completed one on the next photo...

Ok so a few things to report.
I recently bought some warg riders from rumacara on here and have been making the bases for them. So here is the first almost fully painted rider. The lighting is still bad as not been able to get the lights plugged and hung correctly yet, plus there is a few bits id like to tidy up but as a basic finish its presentable.
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o12/yay-free-lemons/warg_zps9f013de3.png) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/yay-free-lemons/media/warg_zps9f013de3.png.html)

Secondly is one of the rather old chaos banners from one of the old army books. I printed it off and painted it up then glued it to some canvas (and have now cut it out) this was mainly a test to see how it turned out and i think i could have spent some more time on the flames but as a first test im quite happy  8) haha.

I don't see why not, just give it a couple of weeks As I'm snowed under at the mo'.The airship is like the Robert E Fulton motorbike,Some thing to fiddle with when I've left over clay or sculpted myself into a corner(too many pieces of wet clay to carry on without killing all your hard work)it something I can pickup and drop without having to worry about delines.

Well I have neglected this page for a while since I broke up with my girlfriend ( a bloody awful situation but am over it and thats the main thing) However I have infact been painting a lot still and some photos to come tomorrow once I have filled in paper work at my local college :)

Firstly I have finished captain Jack Aubrey (bought from a fellow member here) I thoroughly enjoyed making and painting him and it is now in my fathers library as he took a fancy to him haha. Secondly, I recently bought the Space Hulk boxed set, and I know its had a lot of flak here but I like the models and hope to be playing it soon as I am painting many of the models at the moment. Lastly I am working on a fairy for my friends birthday present and have had to take two models to form the base of the miniature as nothing really caught my eye on the market for fairies.

Oh and I have been working on my chaos knights a bit too so photos of those will be up in the appropriate army painters section tomorrow too :)

Well here are the photos as promised ;)

First up is captain Jack Aubrey, I really enjoyed painting him although did have some difficulty at first...

Secondly are the first models painted for space hulk, the librarian, which i enjoyed very much and still ahve one or two minor details to finish off on him.
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o12/yay-free-lemons/IMG_20140930_230940_zpscb7f27dc.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/yay-free-lemons/media/IMG_20140930_230940_zpscb7f27dc.jpg.html)
And teh firts few Genestealers, with these I wanted them to look exceedingly dark so the colours are very muted except in the photos, because of flash they look quite bright, but it shows the true colours I have used, starting with purple and shading three times with black ink to really tone it down and than a quick drybrush of purple all over and an even lighter purple on the head of them.
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o12/yay-free-lemons/IMG_20140930_230915_zpsee468616.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/yay-free-lemons/media/IMG_20140930_230915_zpsee468616.jpg.html)

More to come when I finish off the fairy (for Ruth) and some to come of the chaos knights too...

Nice stuff. I remember doing my genestealers with blue inks to also give a similar effect.

Hi Matt nice work, try using a bright yellow green to highlight the edges of the figure the add a small point of orange some where along the green. It'll give you a more alien feel.As I've said before changing the colour you highlight with changes the mood of the figure.
If your not sure I'll show you how next time your through.

Well another small update.
First off is a test Ratling sniper called Mike, I enjoyed him very much and happy with the results too. His friend is a drunk dwarf for my cousin Mike.
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o12/yay-free-lemons/IMG_20141016_232947_zps0f89f060.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/yay-free-lemons/media/IMG_20141016_232947_zps0f89f060.jpg.html)
Second up is the Centigor that I received in a trade on here. I enjoyed painting him and positioned the arm different to look a bit more dynamic on his rock.
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o12/yay-free-lemons/20141015_010026_zps52966d82.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/yay-free-lemons/media/20141015_010026_zps52966d82.jpg.html)
Lastly is the base for a woodelf diorama I am making. two high elf nobles, one with bow and one with great sword will be mounted on the base along with some tree spirits (kindly donated by Mason here) once they arrive and are all painted.
As you can see it is early stages but I am happy so far and once painted I hope it will be as good as I imagine it to be :)

Looking good, m-m.
Love the Drunk Dwarf, but those new Ratlings look like they are on steroids compared to my last lot of space-hobbits.
Nice paintjob, though.
 :-* :-*

As for the bits: Lets see if they are any good to you first.

They do look quite buff compared to old style but I think a mix would look quite nice, some old and some new.
Thanks for the compliments too :)

Well the bits from Mason arrived this morning and I have wasted no time getting the parts attached where wanted. I did not want to add too much and I feel I have the right amount. The last photo will point where each of the nobles will go :)

As for seasonal settings: I would go with whatever stuff you have handy regarding flock, scatter, tufts etc.
You are on a roll and dont really need to slow down waiting for stuff.

Ahh well I think winter it will be then, may even try make some icicles haha, already have plenty of snow and can make quite a nice mix too.

Once the whole thing has dried, I shall base coat it and decide on all of the colours that I shall use and make a start on the 3 elements, although probably the 2 characters first to give the base time to dry properly.

Well painting has begun on the noble with the bow and here are the pics. I am going with the winter scheme and so blues, greys and white. I like him so far although the photos do not do him justice as my camera is terrible and so is the lighting hahaha.

I have had a set back with the base, the fact that I had to make a square one out of two cavalry bases did not help however that is fixed now after a few hours of splicing  lol

Also a quick photo of the base for my mounted chaos Lord, Kurchak :) Snow will be added soon and after the elves are finished I shall finish the chaos knights and Kurchak himself  :)

Tomorrow will be more photos as I have now also attached the first elf and am happy so far. I do need to blend the base tree to that of the elf and snow will be added when the last elf is added so that I can 'place' it better haha.

So far I am thoroughly enjoying the change too :D

Well I have been painting and modelling away but with no real camera to add photos here so with my fixed camera i shall try get some photos over the next few days.

On the bench for next year are the following...
20 dark elf corsairs.
10 dark elf black guard.
10 dark elf executioners.
10 savage orcs.
5 ork flash gitz,
An Inquisitor and his retinue.
Chaos Mounted Lord.
The rest of the space figures.

Now that I am starting a new job in the new year (FINALLY YAYAYAYA) I wont have as much time, however until then i am going hell for leather into it as I have purchased a can of black spray for base-coating (the part I hate) so I can whizz on with some good stuff haha.

Happy new year folks :)

Firstly, the dark elves that I have been mass painting, some details need to be added still but coming on quite nicely. i am doing the shields for the spearmen separately and will be added afterwards.

Well after neglecting this for some time, I may be back.

I have started blogging and am thinking of posting my painted stuff there mainly, so I thought I would link it here and if my internet starts to run better I shall also post here again too. So here is the link http://let-the-galaxy-burn-again.blogspot.co.uk/

It has the beginning of my Inquisitorial platoon/retinue kind of thing and will soon have the first character fluff as well as a 'profile style' picture for each too.

Oh and let me know if you prefer me to post here too :D

Nice work, I really like that ogre too. Minor suggestion - I would paint the end of the barrels on the Terminators black.

Sure is a portal reference :Do

Do you mean like a dry brushed burnt effect? Or a full black coat?
That can be something I do when picking out the gems, which I shall be doing either today or tomorrow as I only have the two terminators left. Then on to the genestealers, which are already half way done haha.

Full black. On the heavy flamer in this one:

It's silver and imho would look better black. Less of an issue on the heavy bolters as they're drilled out.

Howdy everyone, again another update on the blog.
This time I am showing off the work for my new gaming board/terrain board. Its coming on really nicely and will even be lit eventually with some flame style flickering LED's and i am even tempted to put a smoke generator that I have spare from an old model railway locomotive just for show haha.

If you read it and have comments please do as I REALLY need feedback on the island board haha.

Not sure on everything you're planning, but that cardboard base the house in on might need some reinforcing/switching to thin (3mm) MDF.

Nice idea. :) I take it there'll be more 'rock' built up under the cardboard?
Not sure about the wee stalactite bits, but I could be safely ignored because I'm not sure what else to suggest; apart from some horizontal marks to hint at layers of rock. (I'd recommend a look at some areas on this side of the Oirish Sea: Cliffs of Moher, Dunluce, areas of the Giant's Causeway (http://giantscauseway.ccght.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/13/2012/02/WHS-Map.jpg), including bits that aren't the familiar honeycomb columns, etc. ;) )

The house has a few extra walls around the front so I hope the card will hold as it is already fixed down, it may be a slight over sight on my part as card is easier to cut, in fact I don't have a jigsaw? To cut mdf sheet haha. But it's not going to be bashed around with gaming so I hope it will hold well.

As for the rocky outcrop  stalactites, it was mainly a test to see what I could build up with the clay that I had. So it will get "edited" When I start to add rock to the underside of the card board, which answers that part too haha.
As for inspiration and reference I shall have a look at the rugged Irish coast line as haven't managed to find a rock type I'd like to replicate yet.

Thanks for the input you though you two, gives me some new aspects to think about :)

OK so a lot has happened this week.

I wont go in to full details here as I dont want to be a depressing bugger, but the basics are Sunday, my depression took a nose dive into me being suicidal for a few days, my family and some friends have helped me get back on my feet and ironically the doctor made me feel even worse, she seemed to not listen, took no notes and just sent me on my way. I am going to look into a different doctor and even a weekly therepy group type of thing to go to and see if that will help in the long term.

However now that I AM back on my feet and feeling a bit better, I have done some more research for the island project as I said that I would and found some interesting photographs of natural arches, so I think that little rocky outcrop will be turned into a small natural arch which will be of a softer rock and erroded quicker. this will have connected the island to the mainland many years ago.
I have tested the cardboard further with various weights and it seems to hold very well as only a small amount of it is not supported. However there shall be a lot of rocks underneath with plants growing and hanging from the underside.

I have also made a full start on my dark eldar, photos to come with a blog update on Monday. I am very happy with them so far and I have to admit it will be the first 'good' size force that I will have done and it isnt even for gaming with haha, just as a little display piece for my own sense of completion haha.

ANyway I hope everyone else here is well :)

Terrain's looking good (as are the bases). Can be used for fantasy and sci-fi.

The juve - I think the gun's too blue and the goggles too light (maybe black rims will add some depth?).

I did use a bit of a bright blue haha. I'll try tone it down with  a bit of blue ink.
As for the goggles, by the looks of it I actually forgot them haha. I'll fix that when I can though.

The scenery is almost done now so in the next update there shall be a lot of photos.  I've enjoyed them and they look quite pleasing although only a quick job. I'm adding a few quirky little pieces to them too ;)

Chipping away - the differing tones on the beastmen will look good.

And what snow product did you use on the base of the wolf?

Thanks :) I even plan an albino one too haha...

The product is the snow flakes from woodland scenics, I was given a small amount many moons ago and recently started using it.
I mix it with some water effects and a small amount of white paint into a paste, add that to where I want the snow and then sprinkle a small amount of the flakes on. I get good results with it, although you just need to makes sure the white is pure as even a slightly off white shows up very easily...

I could do a small tutorial? Would be an interesting challenge for me haha... :)

MAN THE BARRICADES!!!

So I try my hand at some small 'modular'? barricades for Mordheim because I had some spare balsa strips.
As a teaser, here is a picture of the 'raw' materials for this blog piece.

http://let-the-galaxy-burn-again.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/man-barricades.html

Also, an update on the Empire army, a few random miniatures on the table at the moment AND my random attempt at nature photography (which was a quick decission)

I hope you enjoy
and until next time
BYE BYE!!!

Matt get some new blades !
Balsa kills blades, that's why you've got dragging on the lower edge.if you make a light cut on the reverse side before you make the main cut then the dragged edge will be a lot less obvious..
Quality counts don't buy cheap blades and get rid of that craft knife. lol
We've this fostering session to get through then. You can pop over early in July and I'll show you few more short cuts and pit fall remedies.if you still want too.
Mark.

I do indeed :D
I shall bring the 'knives' that I have and discuss which are worth keeping as I have several for different jobs and that one I have had for six years (no blade change  :-X) not that im cheap but cant find those blades these days :P haha.
I shall also bare in mind to do a light cut on the reverse side too as I plan on a lot more balsa construction to get it all used up :)

What style truck? Dwarf springs to mind, like the one from the battle for skull pass set.

And any luck on the bayonet?

A friend of mine thinks it is a Chassepot bayonet from the 1860's onwards. I am going to look into it a bit more now I am at the PC proper for the evening.
