Thanks for the comments, chaps.

I feel rather privileged to be have been born at the right time to receive a lot of the good things of life and avoided many of the hardships.

We do not expect to be rich but should be comfortable.  ::)

As those of you who watched my other thread will know, when the rest of my school staff go back to work in September, THIS EX-teacher will be waking up in the Quality Inn, Gettysburg.................  8)

Congratulations.  Retirement is a wonderful thing.  I've been retired for about 18 months now, and with the terrible winter we've been having here in the US, I appreciate it more and more.

Actually there is a military connection to Route 66, in a round about way. A young Dwight Eisenhower wrote a paper just after the Great War that argued that the West Coast of the US was essentially indefensible due to the poor transcontinental road network. Eisenhower had taken part in an exercise where the US Army employed motor transport to conduct a crossing from one side of the US to the other. He later attributed this experience as being a major motivator in establishing the US interstate highway network during his presidency. Eisenhower signed over the funding in 1956.

The actual Route 66 was superseded by the Interstate Highway System, Eisenhower's project.

One day I devised myself a plan

Any fall, be it before or after pride, can be quite nasty at that age. You can get little motion alarms you wear round your neck that will send out an alert if you tumble over. Could be a sound investment.  :D

In honour of the occasion, the Red Arrows just flew over the house, trailed by a red and a yellow fighter.

Some may think that they are on their way to RAF Fairford, but I know better......

They came over last year too, but I prefer the sight of the Battle of Britain flight that passes across annually, too.  Last month I watched the D-Day Dakota fly over....

Well, seems a long time since I started this, indeed I have been so busy that I have not had time to revisit.

Dropped in on Friday to tidy up and hand in keys.  I discovered that my pigeon hole was gone and my emails had ended in July, so with very little to catch up on, I was in and out in an hour. Was I upset? To be honest, no, even though I was leaving five years' work behind.  I have got out of the habit of thinking of school.......

Off on Saturday to the US for two weeks with a few days in DC tacked on:

Thanks, Dave. Doesn't matter how many books and video you use, until you stand on the ground you don't realize how important the high ground is at Gettysburg, especially LRT, much higher than it looks from below. Bought the obligatory tourist tat, fridge magnets, gray kepi and t-shirt, but also picked up a flattened carbine bullet and a piece of iron shrapnel for the Aston museum. I bought a new sign for my man cave; John Avenue, Gettysburg. Had to be bought!!!! Some wonderful reenactors here. :D

Harpers ferry is very emotive, I did think that the
Engine room was smaller than I expected.

Dollywood was a great hoot. Spent the morning in Lexington visiting Jackson's grave and house, Lee's grave and the VMI, with an afternoon in Monticello (all men are created equal, but I'll keep my 170 slaves!)

The trip could easily have been renamed Jefferson, Lincoln and Washington, with a touch of Jackson and Lee.

Off to Arlington House and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Ford's Theater and a Smithsonian for when it gets tooooooooo hot!
