I may have just missed it but has there been a report where the Cavalryman talent has been used in a game?
Trying to figure out how the Federales might use that against the Mexican Freedom Fighters... well, of course they would call them rebels!
Gracias,
Glenn

Isn't there always a shortage of cavalry miniatures outside medieval and napoleonic wargaming? that might be the reason....
-
Plenty of Wild West figures mounted and dismounted then there are Dragoons as well...

then there are Dragoons as well...
? ? ?
-
Dragoons were mounted infantry so figure makers tend to do mounted and dismounted versions. Franco Prussian war ones would look rather good for this period :)
-
I know what dragoons are, what I mean is that I don't know other mounted military of the late victorian era than the huge piles of British available. And there certainly are not enough civilian mounted types or military characters, unless you want to make an old west posse. Which to me reads as the "shortage" I meant before. Let's say there is a limited offer on mounted character miniatures as opposed to walking ones that fit the IHMN demand.
-
Northstar do a number of mounted Boers and Western figures that might come in handy :)
-
Yes, but it is either this "frontier style" or the British Imperial style, or a few Indian or Turkish/Egyptian characters, so it is limited.
You cannot even do a proper late 19th century camel troop if You don't want british soldiers

Just trying to find pictures of "Mexican Farmer" with any 1880/1890 year associated in a Google search show lots of Braceros, Cowboys, and other stuff related to the date but not usually what is identified as Mexican Farmer specifically. Links will always be appreciated...
Part of the challenge is
1) cultural (If there are other Hispanics * who are more familiar with subject than I am - mostly my knowledge is from my Ti'a [English keyboard, sorry] who was "Middle Class" Mexican citizen until recently and snippets from older Mexican-American parents of my friends growing up in SoCal - please speak up,) because of the highly stratified Mexican social classes in the 1880s - 1900s **
and
2) technological (Upper Class people could afford professional photography and few Photographers from the early period seemed to have an interest in taking pictures (that still exist today) of other classes at that time.
IHMN/HVF has Farmers only on foot and Ranchers with optional cavalry horses (not specifically forbidden to have "horses" (IHMN, page 28; HVF, page 9,) so I am proceeding on the assumption "riding horses" are always allowed but not usually used in IHMN adventures/battles. Finding figures for "that" will probably be even harder, especially if I ever move IHMN gaming to 15 mm!)
Heck many of the articles that use "Mexican Farmers" in the text seem to end up about people who became Generals or highly successful landowners. :-X
I will keep looking and consider the possibilities...
Gracias,
Glenn
Edit: Anyone who can point me to how to access language characters other than English on a MAC please let me know - I can do it at work on our PCs but have yet to find it on any MAC...
* Part of my heritage is Spanish-American on maternal side and the whole self-dividing of Hispanics in America is a subject of "great delicacy" for discussion on LAF which I will ask not be broached on the forum other than to say people like to draw lines in all cultures... ::) :o ::) :-[
** These being the years closest to IHMN :) 8) :o [and I found the most interesting "verbal pyrotechnics" between Mexicans/Mexican-Americans when I asked about life/history after about 1900.] ??? :o

well, from my limited knowledge, the issue about farming in Mexico at that time was the disenfranchised small subsistence farmers versus the rich landowner who tried to get rich by farming whatever could be sold, cattle and wine, fruit etc - hence all the revolutionary stuff going on (actually no very different from today's problems)
So in terms of miniatures You would have either the simple white garment with straw hat and huarache etc (as shown nicely in the "Magnificent Seven" movie), vs the charro style of those who found imployment in herding cattle. Of course the rich upper class would strive for european fashion, and the urban population would wear the same cheap stuff as everywhere else in the world.
Could the Osprey book on the mexican adventure not be of some use?

Can't hurt! :)
Like I need an excuse to buy another Osprey... Research, Beautiful Princess, research! [actually my wife {the crafter/scrap booker/quilter} has never questioned any hobby buy I make for some reason... ] ;) lol

Empress miniatures do a fair share of mounted units for the Brits and if you can get them Foundry does some as well Perry do some also . As for main character types with both mounted and dismounted I had to convert some of mine. Also for your Mexican couldnt you use Franco Prussian war french?
-
With all the plastic 28mm mounted figures out there conversions are a lot simpler these days, especially for the 1900's.

please enlighten me - do You mean the plastic napoleonic and ACW cavalry?
I'm serious - I would like to have the opportunity for some European-non-Brit late 19thC cavalry

I think 1835n is too early https://repository.library.brown.edu/studio/item/bdr:231311/ so maybe more like this? I have doubts about posting the image...
It will be the top left picture (Helmet and sword) of this set...

The Perry ACW cavalry would be your best bet, I've seen some nice conversions for Very British Civil War using them.

is there a link? that sounds interesting

1867 too early? North Star have cav and dragoons for the Prussians and Austrians. Slightly earlier Great War have cav for Crimean Russians and Foundry have cav for Crimean and Franco-Prussian. Should be possible to form the basis for conversions even if not quite correct.
Then you have Hussars of course, most of whom still wore Napoleonic uniforms with different hats.
-
There are also these from Hinterland Miniatures-
http://hinterlandminiatures.weebly.com/storecart.html
And some useful ones from Reiver Castings-
http://gwargamesp.fr.yuku.com/topic/7556#.UvfB5H8gGK0
I'll look to see if I can find pictures of the Perry conversions.
-
Yes, mid 19th C is a tad early I'm afraid
Yes the Hinterland ladies are of course gorgeous (I'd call them Hinternland ;))
And no, The Reiver castings are British...
But - I just remembered that Brigade Miniatures have very nice Belgian Carabineers with Kolpack!

Hmm, your problem is going to be the lack of a 'good war' that wasn't British to form the basis for a figure range then...
If you can find them, HLBS used to do German Camel Corp which I see being sold online every now and again. You have some hope for Russians as there are a couple of people working on Russo-Japanese stuff and some esoteric cav figures for the Maximilian Adventure (which might still be too early for you). I'm assuming you're discounting French Foreign Legion in Africa? Artizan have a bunch for that.
That's about all I can think of.
-
I have all Artizan French Foreign Legion one can get ;), well almost
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=56501.0
and the Chasseurs d'Afrique are not bad (although I'd be looking for something different, but for different reasons), but they would be too plain for IHMN.
I guess the Belgians could be a good try
someone should write some rules for the Bottomland cavalry :D
