Title: Empress Jazz Age Brits.
Post by: Paul @ Empress Miniatures on 18 February 2014, 08:47:12 AM
Soon to be put in the shop the first of our Brits. Designed for the 1920's and 1930's to go with our Afghan hill tribemen.

This period saw the Brits involved in various post WW1 Colonial conflicts such as the Third Afghan war and NWF campaigns. Added to this there is a fantastic boys own film The Drum showing a 'typical' NWF adventure. The range will develop to include more Brits including armoured cars and tankettes as well as Indian troops and mountain artillery. Plus lots of pulp character packs.

Downed RAF pilots.

Known as a blood chit in other locales. A document promising to reward local civilians for aiding downed pilots.

On the North West Frontier the women had a certain reputation regarding how they treated enemies who fell into their hands (Billy Fish puts it rather well in The Man Who Would be King - "And now the womans of Er-Heb will cut his bollocks off!"). A blood chit would (hopefully) save your goolies, hence the RAF nickname for them in this part of the world.

I happen to have one, though mine is from the S.E. Asia theatre of WWII. It is printed on a piece of silk.

Dear friend,
I am an Allied fighter. I did not come here to do any harm to you who are my friends. I only want to do harm to the Japanese and chase them away from this country as quickly as possible. If you assist me, my Government will sufficiently reward you when the Japanese are driven away.

Good heavens, old chap! They're not THAT important! We can take it for granted that any fellow unfortunate enough to be traipsing around Waziristan is a YOUNGER son and the inheritance has already passed to your elder brother. (Tough luck about that, as well, wot?)  ;)

On the general subject of "goolie chits" and the like I came across a most gruesome tale (unfortunately I can't recall precise details off the top of my head; I think it relates to the 1890s) where a few Imperial troops had been captured; when they were found they'd been staked out on the ground and apparently the tribal women had urinated into their mouths until the men drowned. When a number of tribal men were taken they too were staked out; the Imperial regiment assembled ready to march out and as they passed each man fell out in turn to deliver a good kick between the legs to the tribal prisoners. Grim and gruesome in the extreme all around but hence Kipling's famous refrain:

When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Just roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.

There is an account of Ghurka soldiering on the NWF called "Bugles and a Tiger" that goes into the incidents that you just mentioned. I read the book when I was 11 or 12 and was quite disturbed......

I imagine you can use anything as a back story for Pulp Alley.

I think T&T because its for largeish skirmish with a good mix of heroes and a few units.  (Or smallish unit based game with an over representation of command types, if you are the glass-is-half-full type of game).

Variations of the existing two packs. These will hopefully be available by April.

Both Triumph & Tragedy and A World Aflame are suitable and both available from Empress Miniatures.  ;) We tend to use the latter nowadays cos its what I wrote.

Pulp Alley is definitely a good choice if you're wanting a game that's going to play at a quick pace and has bit of an "adventure" feel. We usually play with about 5-15 figures per player.

You can download the free version of Pulp Alley from Wargame Vault if you'd like to see how the basic mechanics work - http://www.wargamevault.com/browse.php?manufacturers_id=5628

And my Dad wrote it.  ;)

Must confess to not being a great lover of army lists.

I am working on native units of between 8 and 10 figures made into warbands of between 2 and three of these with a leader and perhaps the addition of a support weapon.

Then two or three of these warbands.

One warband of cavalry. perhaps 12 figures as a strike force.

A central command and centrally controlled support assets. For example we are just about to release an FT17 tank and I fancy painting a captured one painted faded red with lots of jinglys and flags all over it. Perhaps even an old WW1 fighter much patched and in need of repair.

As you can see I am going for historically based pulp lol
