Title: Trouble at the Drift
Post by: Gazjones on 16 June 2014, 11:44:19 PM
Hi Guys. My club held a Rorke's Drift game at a public event over the weekend. Here are some pictures.

A Zulu attack approaches through the garden toward the front defenses.

Men on the front wall await the Zulu onslaught.

A view along the back of the mission station.

The hospital is on fire and troops have fallen back to the redoubt.

The storehouse defenses under great Zulu pressure. Yes i do know the red headbanded men are NNC but we had to use them as Zulu to make up the numbers.

Here is the real storehouse shortly after the battle and my model for comparison. The large loopholed wall was a later addition built from the remains of the burnt down hospital.

All buildings and fencing scratchbuilt. Imperial troops by Empress Miniatures. Zulu are a mix of Empress and Warlord.

Neither were plastered James. Both buildings have always been described as being of varying colour brick and stone. I've added one more picture showing the real storehouse shortly after the fight. No rendering, but what clearly appears to be some kind of whitewash is visible on the right.

Even better seeing the model building next to the real one - a faithful reproduction. Hats off. Well done.
Did you model the buildings yourself or was it a team effort?

Thankyou very much ;)
I did all the buildings myself from a balsa frame. Wooden floor foam underlay was used for all the brickwork. An old bathrobe was used for the thatching. Other bits and pieces around the table are from the other members collections.

The film was made on an extremely low budget. The makers located an old farm with two buildings that would do as a set.
The location used and buildings looked nothing like its historical counterpart. Fifty years ago not many people cared about accuracy like they do today. As for the WG model, i don't think you'd really like my opinion, but it's a good gaming piece:-X

Well that is a splendid effort then.
Note to self - old bathrobe makes for highly convincing thatching (I remain sceptical on the roofing properties of teddy bear fur... )

(Now, where is the wfie's dressing gown... ?  ;))
