Inspired by Marine0846, and the Grimsby Wargames Club IM project, I've started to put together my own game based on street-fighting in Delhi, 1857...
Sharing a few photos in the absence of a blog-thingy in the hope your comments will keep me focused on the project. The buildings are the hard work of several people far more talented than me - a mix of commercially bought and scratchbuilt - in 28mm scale on a 6' x 4' table.
Still got to add a Residency and maybe the Kashmir Gate, but that will need a much bigger table, I fear!
-
Looks impressive 8) 8)
Of course you realise that more pictures are needed :)
cheers
James

Looks fantastic. Great work!
Not only more but bigger pictures are imperative
-
Really excellent
Scratchbuilt?
-
Bravo! That was a lot of work but well worth it, methinks! :)
-
Thanks for the kind words. Most of the buildings are scratchbuilt by Andrew at the 'Colonial Steamboat Company', with a few from the Middle East range from PMC (now owned by Caliver Books) and Najewitz Modelbau. The canal is from Frontline Wargaming, I think, and the latex/resin roads from Fat Frank (available via Ebay, and the nicest I've found).
Still got to get some more earthworks and barricades for the streets, as well as general clutter.
First time I've posted photos to the forum so wasn't sure how large the file should/could be. I'll try to post some more detailed/close up shots once I've put some pretty things on the streets
-
Oooooh!!! Yummy!
I would love to see some how-to's on construction!
-
Excellent buildings, love them.
Lots of ideas to use in making more buildings.
Will we get to see troops?
Thanks for sharing.
-
That's a really excellent city layout :)

Super set-up there.
I've got that Colonial Steamboat Company fort you can see in one of the pics. Really is a nice piece of kit. Oddly enough I have the canal too. Unfortunately I never got to use either of them in a game. :(
-
Good Grief,what a beautiful setup,yes more pictures.
-
wonderful.
-
A great set-up! :-*
-
Does the Colonial Steamboat Company have a website?
Thanks.
-
Now those pics look very impressive- evidently the chap that has made the models has a real talent.
:-* :-* :-*
Are they made en masse to plans he already has or are they made to order?
Darrell.

Thanks.
Yes.
-
Yes.
That will probably answer my question too 8).
Darrell.

You have done a great job well done

Now that looks really splendid :-*
Bigger pics would be great :)

Aye, some close ups would be excellent if you can find the time?
Darrell.

I'll see what I can do at the weekend - what's the largest file size I can upload here?
Andrew at CSC has just listed some of his buildings on Ebay UK - a search for 28mm handmade Middle East buildings should find them.
-
:-*
Oh my, that's a bit of alright then, that is!
:-*

Experimenting with file size before I start adding some figures...
-
All rather splendid, the town looks excellent. ;D
-
Love the close up of the city.
Very very nice.
-
A stunning looking set up you have :-* :-* :-*
-
Quite impressive indeed :)
-
That is looking great!
-
All rather splendid, the town looks excellent. ;D
Agreed! :-* :-* :-*
What is the small fort-like building across the river?
-
Hi chaps, sorry for the lack of updates, real life and good weather getting in the way of gaming.
The fort is a CSB design, one of several that Andrew does, which can be found on his website.
-
Wowsers!
-
Andrew at CSC has another similar fort listed on Ebay UK right now.
-
looks very good
-
I was next to last, it's really beautiful.
-
Great looking table. Richard

All rather splendid, the town looks excellent. ;D
That's an understatement! It looks beautiful :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Please keep these very inspiring pics coming!!

Thanks Atheling,
Been distracted by other projects, but the new Iron Duke range has revived my enthusiasm for the Mutiny. So, for your delectation, albeit not quite finished, this is CSC's interpretation of a generic Residency compound, inspired by Lucknow and Carry On up the Khyber...
Some fine detailing still to be done, and Andrew is making me some interchangeable damaged sections both for the main building and the surrounding walls. There are various other photos in his website.
Andrew isn't the fastest when it comes to these one-off projects, but he is worth the wait when he produces stuff like this.
-
Wow! That is some set up you have there! I've long been an admirer of the CSC works on eBay, just always been pipped to the post on ones I've bid on so I've not added any to my collection..yet. That Lucknow Residency he is working on currently is absolutely amazing :o Those would all probably work just as effectively for the Sudan methinks.
-
Very Nice!
-
What a great set of buildings.
Love them.
Like you, I am all hot lol over the Iron Duke figures.
Have purchased about seven packs.
Am waiting for the extra standard bearer pack to come out.
Then a big order. Poor wallet. ;D
-
I'm stunned at how stunning this model is :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Darrell.
-
I want one of those residency things!!!
No room to store it though so can't really have one :(
I have 3 of his other Eastern style houses that I bought off EBAY. They are very nice!

Couple of quick shots from the start of this weekend's game - Stalwart Brits and loyal Sikhs launch a dawn raid from the besieged Residency on the enemy lines, in an effort to spike the guns.
Using 'Sharp Practice' rules
-
That looks like a fun game, lovely set up. :)
-
Terrific stuff all round! :-*
(How do the Sharp Practice rules work out for this period? I use them for later Colonial, and I'd think they'd be ideal for IM)
-
Great photos.
More pics, please.
More pics, pretty please. :D
Will we see a battle report?
-
Will see what I can do, though real life is going to get in the way far too much in the next few weeks - luckily I can keep the table intact from one gaming day to the next...
3 British squads: British regulars, Bengal Fusiliers and Loyal Sikhs (each 3 groups of 8 men) on a dawn raid to spike the enemy guns and locate and eliminate the notorious sniper, "Bob the Nailer" before the enemy are able to rouse themselves. The Brits can also rely in the support of a smaller command of civilian volunteers (2 groups of 6) and are accompanied by a small group of Engineers carrying explosives and spiking equipment.
View from one of the emplaced mutineer gun positions up towards the Residency (only the rear wall section on the table - partly a space issue, table being only 6'x4', partly because I've been repainting part of the main Residency building)
-
One photo, it's a good one. :)
Spike the gun is a great game.
I did one years ago and it was loads of fun.
A good friend of mine stills talks about it, 25 years later.
Boy, am I getting old. lol

Somewhere I Have a photo of the Kashmir Gate that I took a month or so ago. Don't forget St James Church whichi is about 150 yards behind it. Post 1857 a lot of the buildings were cleared away from around the Lal Quila to provide a field of fire for the garrison. Once you get into the Chandni Chowk area the streets are very very narrow and there are many covored Bazaars that have been there for centuries, real mazes. I have live here in Delhi for 3 years and am still discovering new angles on this city - well collection of 7 cities. There are some excellent maps available on the web if you want to get really into it.
I am waiting until I have left though before I get into anything 1857 or even North West Frontier - still a very touchy subject. When I do though I intend to to do the 1st and 2nd Afghan War, 1857 and NWF in the 30s. My interest in the Indian Cavalry Regiments is tolerated and the President's Bodyguard still turn out as if they were a Simkin Plate.
Best
Graham

After reading the brilliantly evocative narrative history, Our Bones Are Scattered, Andrew Ward /i], I'm not surprised in the least. The name Niel probably still invited a certain amount of derision and disgust at the very least.

What mini's will you be using for the Brits in the First Afghan War?
Darrell.
