inspired by Mr Bibbly's cliffs IO kicked off my own project but managing this in a different way....

you'll have to go to the blog to see what happens next

You'll get yours done before me as well lol

Looks an interesting idea.
I imagine you will knock these out at your usual pace?
-
That's some run of escarpment! Looking at the teaser shot I did wonder if you were going to use it as a sort of mold for an expanding foam build.
-
That's an idea....might just use that for something else :)
-
What's the interior adhesive (I'm sure other brands are available ;D ).
cheers
James
-
B&Qs own brand just like hard as nails
-
You should add a couple of 3/4 corners too, so you can do all sorts of shapes. And if you add a raised bit, you can make a mesa! ;)
-
Looks like you might be able to use those as a starting point for the expanding foam, using the wood as a guide for cutting it down to shape...
-
Eric, your modulation is an inspiration! Nicely worked, i like Fram's idea of a raised messa. :D
cheers

Seems I spied a back 'exit' already in place for the tombs! :o Was that on project purpose or just a happy accident?

Part 2 of my escarpment build is now up on the blog

This looks awesome.
If only I had the time, space, talent and focus to do something like this.
-
These look great and that sure is a whole lot of bark! How will you work the joins? Are you planning to paint or flock them? (and yes I know this could lead down a bad road "Flock me? No flock you!" - Sorry, I'll get my coat)
LB
-
All will be revealed...but yes flock at some point in time will feature
-
Looking great! I am super jealous of the availability of cork bark over there.
-
Always wanted to do something like this. Looks good!

Cork bark is easily available in most pet shops failing that there must be online supplies to be had...
-
So part 3 of the escarpment build is now up on the blog...
tomb entrances, filler and sand...

I missed the start of this one Giles, no idea why, this is brilliant.

Cheers Paul

The tomb entrances really look the part. 100 saracens, is there no slowing you down? Saga Cross and Crescent by any chance?

lol
I'm trying to focus on 11 or 12 main projects too!

Those tombs look just the part Eric, and very
big huge impressive. They will look just the part for a wide range of scenarios, and very modular which is good news.
Cheers

Modular for me is the only way to go...this way I can use the same stuff over and over again without being tied to one geography or genre.
If these cliffs work out well I'll be using them as a coastline for my Cornish village project...

Part 4 is now added to the blog...

thanks for looking

Giles,
Great stuff. I am shamelessly going to steal borrow some of your techniques for the hills for my French Foreign Legion boards.
... I even bought a sh*t load of camels :D :D :D :D
What scale camels and where from? I am looking to source some for my blinds (Sharpe Practice hidden movement).
-
Looking good Giles. It sounds like the airbrush is working for you, would you recommend it for buildings too?
-
Hi Folks finally finished the escarpments, pyramid and most of the temple
lots of piccies on the blog

Fantastic terrain also like the temple in the background - love to see more pics of that...

Cheers Golgotha - more pics of temple build here

That looks awesome, very nicely done!
That right there looks like it would be an awesome skirmish board for smaller games - cat-and-mouse among the cliffs, that sort of thing, possibly with a rope bridge between the two left-most escarpment pieces!
-
That's part of the plan...these are interchangeable ;)
-
Great work!
-
Indeed. Great piece of work. ;-)
-
That looks beautiful! Excellent job. Richard
-
Thanks guys...will hopefully get a number of smaller pieces done this weekend ;)
-
If I only had half your free time. Outstanding build. My only niggle would be for you to add some talus and sand to the bottom of the escarpments. Small niggle since you nailed the colors, textures and managed to make building a modular board look far easier than it is. Kudos to you sir.
Snitchy sends.
-
Excellent work Giles, damned effective. I've just restarted my stalled cliff project and I think I shall shamelessly steal a few ideas from here :)

Guess what this still has to be added.... ;)

Quite impressive and love the color choices. Oh, and, yes, bark is easy to find at pet shops here in the states - reptile section; only problem is to acquire the volume you did would pay for a quite sizable and impressive 28 mm army, professionally painted!
One change I'd make for my tastes is a purpose painted canvas ground cloth instead of those modular pieces but I would add 'flavor' pieces to go on top to provide similar variety to what you've done. Just looses all those seems between the pieces - though you can certainly tone those down during games with a bit of scatter on top of them.
Nice.
-
These sure have come along. I've finally picked up some cork myself, as I'm sure I have to make cliffsides of my own at some point.
-
Thanks for all the great comments guys
But I'd like to address Fifteens away comment specifically

I went through some personal debate on the boards issue versus a base cloth. In the end I settled on the boards for a number of reasons.
Firstly the pieces I have built (the cliffs ) are extremely heavy and on anything lighter warpage of their boards might be an issue
Secondly the boards do allow multiple layouts as well as the unique ability of sliding them to the left/right/front & back as a game develops
Thirdly I plan to create some 'lower' boards which will then be built up to form oasis, rods and a river bank.
At the moment the seams are quite obvious but once I have 'fitted' these and cleaned down the excess paint/glue/sand from the edges they should disappear somewhat. The addition of palm trees, scrub etc will make a difference.
Some more piccies will appear soon as I have just created some sand banks/mounds etc
Once again thanks
-
Oh by the by, I don't know about you folks, but in Toronto there is actually a cork wholesaler (it's way out in the suburbs). I got 4.5 pounds of cork bark for $55 (four big pieces, probably totally about three square feet total, plus a narrow tube for tight corners or spurs).
Normally they just sell closed 20 pound boxes, but they very kindly let me pick some pieces out since I wanted less and they do sell per pound if you ask nicely (which was also good because a lot of the stock they had on hand had the wrong sort of look).
This was the place: http://www.jelinek.com/ They also do online orders, though I expect in Europe you're better off ordering from a Portuguese company or something.
-
Eric,
My comments weren't meant as a critique of what you are doing, just the way I'd go versus how you've gone. What you are doing is great and inspiring - as others have said. And your way does allow for subterranean features, as it were. I use artist's canvas for my cloths and it is plenty sturdy to handle my hills which are made of 1/2" plywood coasted with sand before painting and the biggest pieces are pretty heavy, relatively speaking, so the weight objection can be accounted for by those using cloths.
And, as an aside, for years I went for more naturalistic slopes on hills and then finally caved in and decided to use "wedding cake" hills because they are just so much more playable - but I do have portions that are inaccessible. In a game a couple of weeks ago one player stymied himself by climbing the backside of a hill with part of his command only to find he couldn't descent the cliff on the other side. He was frustrated. I loved it. True fog of war stuff.
Keep up the great work.
-
This is fantastic scenery (and I'm going to have to
steal emulate your techniques) and it fits in so well with the pyramid and temple. Really looking forward to seeing your Indiana Jones games when it transpires. :-*
-
thanks for all the great comments...
Currently putting the finishing touches to the oasis...hopefully this will be posted tomorrow
-
The Desert boards and Egyptian temple complex are now complete including the new oasis...
LOTS of photos on the blog

Wonderful Giles! Great work. :o

That looks bloody brilliant! :-*
What a great board for SO many occasions.
-
That really is something else! Nice work.

Top marks!
-
Eric I believe you have a winner there sir. I mean look at this?!
That looks like a scene from an Indiana movie. Top shelf old chap.
So, will you be doing modular tomb boards for the intrepid adventurers? Will you be putting together a small room with many chalaces and a decrepit old templar? A room full of golden treasures? o_o so many possibilities Eric. ;)
Cheers
Matt.
-
That's a fantastic board. Some great ideas for my desert boards which I will be
stealing borrowing. ;) Great cliffs and temple entrance.
-
Fucking brilliant mate!! :o :o :o :o
Please excuse my potty mouth, but dam......

Giles, that's one of your best - you have surpassed yourself sir 8)

Excellent work ;D I am in the midst of doing a modest Chaos in Cairo set up and you have given me some great ideas. Thanks for posting such inspirational work.
-
A super looking board.
Love it.
Lovely photos on your blog.
I really 'dig' it. :D
-
I fully and completely second andym. I wanna play!!
-
Wow! What a monster. You certainly don't go in for half measures now do you.
Have you thought about also using it to run a colonial VBCW conflict? Might make an interesting change!

Started on my Middle Eastern Village - thanks to the Colonial Steamboat Company

Nice Eric. I've just bought some aquarium plants to do something similar. You've helped me see how well they can be done
Have you done anything to fix the glossy finish? I was wondering if a light dust of ochre spray paint from the top would be enough, or a little dulcoat.. or if that would just ruin it. Those grasses are just a tad bright for my linking.
Cheers
Matt.

Thanks Matt for the comments...
To be honest I have not done anything with the glossy finish..I think the flash on the camera is making them glossier than they actually are. The grasses do contrast brilliantly with the mundane desert boards but I actually quite like it.
cheers

and another build for the middle east settlement...this time a small well...

That is marvellous. I have been contemplating buying one from Architects of War but I may save my shekels.

The well is excellent Giles. It reminds me of a certain part of Raiders of the Lost Ark; "why did it have to be snakes?"
-
Cheers guys...more to come :D
-
Very nice work!

My sentiments exactly. I was also going to buy one until I saw your build tutorial on your blog. A brilliant idea. :D :D
I shall flatter you by imitation and stealing borrow the idea for my 'Follow That Camel'. 8)

Good to see you using separate bricks ;)

James your cliffs inspired me to build my escarpments....your castle has inspired me to use separate bricks....what next?
If only I had a small measure of your talent and your laser cutter ;)
