And to get this project started, I begin with the Black Widow herself!

First up is to reinforce the braces on the missile pod and spotlight. Since I had the pod off, I decided to do 4 pods missile bays opened, one already shot.
What do you guys think?
-
Looks pretty good, is what I think :)
-
Yup, looks good to me :)
cheers

Yay! That brings back memories… keep the good work going, I'll watch with interest.
-
Yep, I'll be watching this with genuine interest. :-*

Naice! :D

Ok, I'm prepaint! Thanks for all the kind comments Mates!

It's a shame that the Robotech stuff will not likely scale perfectly with this CBT stuff...it should be shipping sometime in the next 2-3 months (if it ever ships). The kits look pretty good and you could make a good dozen or more CBT mechs out of them.
-
It's funny, I put this model next to the plastic Loki, and although the loki is a good 10 tons lighter, it's about a 3rd bigger. I wonder if the robotech models wont actually work out just fine.
-
Any guesses on which half I decided to start with?

Excellent result. The pics I've seen of Robotech stuff show it as being quite larger by comparison. We'll see here shortly. So, what's next?

Nice :)

Looks great with a lick of paint on it 8) 8) 8)

Thanks Mates! I'm pleased as punch with how she came out...and how relatively easy it was. I write 'relatively' because it does get a bit tedious to do all of that outlining. But I do it in 10 - 15 minute 'doses' so that my eyes dont go willy!
That said, the rest was a breeze and fun to pull off. I know she's not that pristine pure black, off the assembly line' look, but I've always liked that slightly worn and grittier look. I'm sure others can pull this off far better than me, but I'm very happy with my weathering skills so far. I must credit all those PA projects I've done :D.
Some of the poses on the old lead minis makes conversions quite difficult, but I've been able to do at least small conversions on all of them so far. I found the Stinger's to be the hardest to convert, but a simple head twist and then changing the stance should work out ok and provide some variety.
More to come!
-

I found that on the small amount I had and gave up as it wasn't worth the effort lol
Keep going though 8)

Totally Mate... But I was surprised at what an armor leg repose can do to mix it up. And I do think it has a synergistic effect, the ones with the least conversions dont look as regular anymore

I give you all, the 3025 Command Lance

-
Nice, shame the Crusader is so...weird scaled in that version. Good choice of Mechs --- a bit on the heavy side, but plenty of fire power and punishment.
-
I actually just pulled the list from the Tales of the Black Widow Company :D. I really like the lances as they have a nice selection of classic mechs, although one too many Stingers..... lol. As I collect a few more and take the BWC in my own direction I'll change up the lances a bit I think.
-
The books always included many mechs which really sucked ass in the game...making it pretty hard to agree with some of their choices. lol Swapping out mechs is as simple as "oh, it was blown up in the last engagement...".
Done and done. Keep going TBC (cheers from Solaris)

Great work and really nice to see how well those minis appear thanks to your work!!!!

Sorry to spam.... lol

Bounty hunter
-
WOW! They look great! :D
I very much like the Bounty Hunter.... Superb!
-
And nice Widow yourself!
-
I've always heavily disliked the CBT Marauder figure...in order to cram it onto the hex base, the feet are far too small. The proper one has a real balance to it. The miniature is...rough! lol Most noteable in TBC's group shot. Look at how spindly and tiny the legs are for that huge bulbous canopy. :D
I've decided (with four friggin' boxes of Robotech coming) that I'll spare a decent number of Robotech mechs to the side and paint them up as CBT style mechs --- probably make my own rules up for them (not a fan of CBT gaming).
-
Gents, I give you the Black Widow Company's Lynn Sheridan and her Crusader

Awesome.
-
Awesome.
Cheers Mate :D
I made her more 'beat up' than Natasha's Warhammer. In the book it said it has some significant damage, so I thought to make it a bit more 'worn'. It also has a LOT of plates! I find that some are a lot easier to paint up than others, or at least quicker...
Griffin is up next!
-
Ah, I also used Vallejo Still Water in the cockpit windows :D I went back and added it to the spot light nt he Warhammer as well. Unlike a gloss, the Still Water is self leveling, so it really gives a glassy look. Right now it's still drying, but I expect it to be much clearer tomorrow.
-
it is incredibly hard to find good looking mecha for battletech. As dated as these figs are they are still superior to most of what is out there.
There was a full scenario book for the black widows.I recall it being rather good.
I agree! There is something about these old mechs with their attendant overheating problem that just dont compare... They have such an old school charm. And if you want a quicker game, play 3050 and use Double Heat Sinks and XL's!
Yes, there are two books with scenarios, Tale of the Black Widow Company. The first is 3025, and the later is @3050 or so, but both have scenarios. I've based this Company on the 3025 model. I think I'll adjust it to my own tastes from here and use the later publication as a basis.
-
Ever have the experience of viewing a thread a second time, and seeing the obvious previously missed?

As in a stage in between? Please share thoughts on how to do that!

-
I'm fine up to the old school version of 3050. Nothing beyond interests me. I've acquired the old TRO's --- the original 3025 and 3050. They're beat up, so I may painstakingly convert them into a PDF eventually for myself.
I was hugely unimpressed with the way modern BT is going. However, I will point out the (mediocre) plastic boxed lances are coming out soon, about $20 ($15 on shops) for 4 plastic mechs is a bit much, but a huge savings vs. the $12-15 per metal mini. Again I may end up playing solely with my Robotech figs. I did score some reasonable sized Gashapon from Dougram to cover even more unseen mechs.
-
Just some updates. Finally finished the Hayes' Griffin. All I need is to finish the Marauder and the Command Lance will be done. C&C's as always are welcome and appreciated! :D

Coming along nicely. I have some slick little Dougram gashapon figures I picked up recently...gave me some slightly out of scale Griffins, Shadow Hawks, and some Wolverines which will be chopped up to make old-school Battlemasters out of the new plastics! lol

I'm really looking forward to seeing what people do with the RT models once they get stuck in. i only wish they scaled better, I'd buy a bunch....
-
I notice that from certain angles the Warhammer's Small Missiles look crooked, other times not... It bothers me, but I rationalize it as the product of some battle damage...

Great work! I have a fondness for old school BattleTech, the Crusader was the first metal mini I bought back in the days…

Thanks chaps! It's a very very simple paint scheme, but like I wrote, tedious as hell!
Since there was not as much red on this version of the BWC, I thought to keep the cockpits red so to help pick out the decals. I played around with putting a green or blue glow in the weapon barrels, but not sure how to go about this....
I have the Fire Lance all ready to go, but I want to paint up a Command Lance of Steiner Royal Guards for ready opponents. I'm thinking an Atlas, Zeus, Banshee and Griffin combo.
-
So, the beginning of my Fire Lance. I had trouble sleeping last night....
What do you guys think?

As a somewhat regular Battletech/Alpha Strike player this project is giving me such a nostalgia buzz its great!
Love your work mate. Please don't stop now ;)
Any chance we might see a batrep in future???

Like the Archer .
Personally i would rework the hatchets a bit...

You give those awful soft plastic mechs more love than they deserve.
No soft plastic here! I dont have that kind of patience! :D These are all c1985 leads
I was goofing around with one of the hard plastics they they released before this latest batch, and they are just as awful as the softies... I ended up chucking it.
-
I don't think the current plastics are too bad. They're still crap sculpts...and still plastic board game pieces. But the new re-done batch for the current boxed set is very reasonable for what you get in the starter game.
I have three boxes sitting somewhere. I haven't tried the new lance packs though --- not sure what their quality is like.

I agree totally! The ones I mean are from the set that they released in 2010 or so, then people complained and TOPPS made the ones we have today. Sadly, most of the BWC are Unseen, so I had to pay a bit for the older models.
-
Yeah, my boxes are the "relaunch" or whatever. Still not on par with quality hard plastic though. I was happy to see them release all those lance packs though. Even expensive as they are, they're less than half of what the rather obnoxiously priced metals sell for.
It's a real shame the huge majority of BT mechs are completely crap minis. It'd be nice to see a new quality studio do a full line. Perhaps base them on the awesome new art from Mechwarrior Online. The guy behind that art design really did a great job of keeping the character of the mechs while updating the poor original art.
This is a good example. Screams ATLAS even though the whole thing has been slightly redesigned. Looks far more legitimate. The only down side is that the same artist seems to have done all of the work, and all of the mechs look like they're from the same manufacturer now.
-
I agree...sadly I agree. I wish the minis were better. I have some from Insane Kangaroo, nice sculpts and of course his painting is tops!
This was my inspiration for the Steiner Atlas I'm working on on the other thread

Yep, I was actually going to do a 3025/3050 alternate rules Battletech game alongside a Robotech project, but the Palladium stuff simply doesn't scale up to the BT stuff at all (and while nice, the scale difference is correct between Zentraedi/UN Spacy stuff...so even the mechs don't match). I had grabbed a bunch of Dougram Gashapon to fill in some more old Unseen gaps etc.
Tsk tsk.
(I grabbed a Gashapon Wolverine which actually chops up nicely with the Battlemaster they put in the new box...allowing you to build a more Unseen version).

The RT stuff is def hit and miss on scale. The Warhammer scales well, but I havent seen the Archer except in pics. I'm planning on using the LAM's though.... :D
-
I suppose some of the Valkyries would work...but only as stingers and wasps (assuming you believe 25 ton mechs to be tiny and not just poorly armored).
The Glaug would be waaaay too big for a Marauder, and you can't use any of the regults as Ostroc/Ostsol/Ostscout conversion material because they're be taller than an Atlas.
The Rifleman is very small by scale-wise and doesn't look like a 50-60 ton mech (I've forgotten what it is). I'm sure you can use some with success.

In fairness it seems like the 'tonnage' is all over the place when you compare minis against each other, even within the Iron Wind/RP family. I sort of made peace with it a long time ago for my sanity! lol
-
I actually just busted out the box of mechs...and you're right, they do scale better with Robotech than I had remembered. I just kitbashed up something fun, and may actually paint a mech or two (for absolutely zero reason at this point).

I thought you'd be pleasantly surprised! The RT set is a fairly cheap way to get nice unseens.
-
So...I got bored, based up and super quick painted a couple of mechs tonight. Realized that since I don't care about the poor quality sculpts...I'll just dry-brush them and roll. I made my little Gashapon-mixed Battlemaster Unseen version...I'll just be doing the two paint schemes, probably paint up a dozen or two mechs and see what game I can come up with to play.
It was oddly calming to just paint something so quick with zero attention to detail and yet they look fine at gaming height. I'll save the effort for my Robotech stuff. Thanks for the inspiration TBC!

PS: Yes, the BM is probably a good bit out of scale, but I just love that old Mech so much I had to go with it (made it from the Dougram Gashapon for the Wolverine model...just tossed in the Battlemaster body and made a gun from a Votoms bit and Veritech booster)

Nice Wasp. I'll have to bust out my RT spares (of which I have...a lot) and assemble a couple of the Unseens at some point. Wasp should be easy enough to make. I forgot I have that Heavy Gear KS on the way, so if that ever comes out I should have all kinds of silly mecha bits to play with as well. I can put together a good 30 or so mechs from 3025 so that'd be enough for me to pal around with.

Thanks Mate! It's still way too shiny, but decals work best on a gloss coat. I'll put a satin on after the decals. Just picked them up from storage today :D
Too bad we dont live closer, it'd be great to get a game in... :( But in any event, I'm looking forward to seeing more of your lances!
-
Well, with my inability to finish projects most of the time, I'll probably not end up with lances...but it's good fun to paint up some mechs. The real labor will be the Robotech stuff - that's daunting at the moment.
lol
I agree, it'd be fun to stomp around and blast stuff though. Damn you Atlantic Ocean!

Pfftttt...no group shot, no care! I've decided I'm going to be ditching my Battlemaster, the scale is just too off for all the other mechs (sad panda). I primed a few here, but it was raining so I didn't finish a good enough prime job to know any others out.
-
Still two more to go :D. I'll do a Lance Shot when they are all finished, but I'm like an impatient child, I just love to post!
-
And now the Stinger is almost done! :D

Awesome. I did up a few more mechs and more importantly started on a bunch of rules modifications to run BTech as a skirmish game (including a whole heap of random tables!) etc. I may actually bust out some of my first Robotech minis and see what I can build. I've compiled a list of mechs I could use for 3025.
-
My latest Archer and the final mech for my Fire Lance. Still need to decal, do the cockpit and satin coat.

I painted a handful of other mechs, but I'll keep my stuff hidden till I get some more done.
