Title: Down down to Goblin-town you go, my lad!
Post by: CaptainHaddonCollider on 12 November 2014, 04:53:38 PM
Heya,
I recently did some different warbands for some Mordheim/Songs of Blades and Heroes/Advanced Heroquest games, and I thought it would be nice to put them up in here as well.

First off is Ulrics Dogs of War, a Middenheimer Warband:

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/imagejpg1_zps2b550518.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/imagejpg1_zps2b550518.jpg.html)

The Crimson Company of Reikland:

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/imagejpg3_zps5bbe634f.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/imagejpg3_zps5bbe634f.jpg.html)

The Coven of the Blessed Blood, a Possessed Posse:

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/imagejpg2_zps3207e9c7.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/imagejpg2_zps3207e9c7.jpg.html)

And finally a small action shot of most of them involved in a huge multiplayer melee last weekend at Graveyard Fest 2014:

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/imagejpg4_zps49ae7f08.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/imagejpg4_zps49ae7f08.jpg.html)

With our small Mordheim campaign now finished, my group and I have now turned our eye to Advanced Heroquest, which we hope to mix with some WHFB-roleplay 1st edition for some Dungeon Crawlling fun. So far we've managed to finish a few tiles, and each is working on their characters.
As the title might vaguely suggest, our first game will be "The Dark Beneath The World", an old White Dwarf scenario based on the Trollslayer novella by Bill King, set in a dark fantasy world of pre-naff Warhammer. I managed to drag up a copy here on the forum, so we should be pretty set rule-wise...all we need now are more miniatures!

This is sort of the standard we're going for:

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/unnamed_zps2df88c07.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/unnamed_zps2df88c07.jpg.html)

...And I've even begun work on Jules Gascoigne, Bretonnian scout!

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/IMG_0768_zpsa9213330.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/IMG_0768_zpsa9213330.jpg.html)

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/IMG_0769_zpsa547427e.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/IMG_0769_zpsa547427e.jpg.html)

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/IMG_0770_zpsd390be97.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/IMG_0770_zpsd390be97.jpg.html)

This should prove interesting once I get some paint slapped on him. I've never worked with Reaper Bones resin/plastic before, but from what I've seen around, he should paint up quite nicely.

The  War Bands, W.I.P. Bretonnian, AND your terrain pieces look WONDERFUL. The conversion work is especially nicely done. EXCELLENT WORK all around!

Thanks for all the nice comments, warms my heart!

We managed a bit of progress on the dungeon yesterday, just need a lick of paint now:

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/imagejpg1_zps2211756d.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/imagejpg1_zps2211756d.jpg.html)

The small white and grey pieces on he finished tile are some interior decorations done by me. I figured the place wouldn't look finished without a weapons rack and an altar of chaos.

Wow love em... do you have some better close ups?

Not at the moment, Scandinavia is dark and not very generous with its light at the moment, but as soon as I get some more taken I'll post them in here!

The work on the dungeon hallways continue - a Big shout out goes to Hu Rhu for providing me with rules for both Advanced Heroquest and the Terror in the Dark expansion! Inspirering Reading, indeed! Does anyone have any experience with combining the game with Warhammer Roleplay 1st edition? I sort of wanted the game to be a bit more mechanic heavy, yet save some of the beautiful and deadly elegance and simpleness of the AHQ system, and as far as I can see the two systems are sort of contemporary.

Your Middenheimer youngbloods are particularly good builds. You've got a great selection of warbands here. The two Reiklanders on the very left, what are they made from?
Title: Re: Down down to Goblin-town you go, my lad!
Post by: CaptainHaddonCollider on 19 November 2014, 10:56:26 AM
The Two henchmen? Well, they're built from various Empire plastic parts, only the head of the guy with the beret is from the Warlord Games commandos. They're a bit on the small side, but fit very well with some GW's parts. Are there any parts in particular you need to know where to source?

I can vouch for the high level of craftsmanship on the warbands, they looked ace on the table when we played.

I'm the rest of the "we" that CaptainHaddonCollider has been referring to when he's talked about the dungeon tiles (I think we're the only ones working on the AHQ set?), and he's persuaded me to pop on here and show some progress pics.

I've mainly been doing the tiles so far, and while they're not painted yet, or even weathered, the bulk of the work is done:
Apologies for the naff pic tho, white plasticard is hard to photograph. This might be better, all stacked:

I think we still need 3 more corner tiles, just to make sure we have enough flexibility when we're playing, but other than that we should be set on the basic tiles. Of course, the special tiles are still lacking, but that'll come later when everything's painted. I've been unable to focus enough to keep myself entirely from painting, so I did up a chaos ogre for the set as well, I think there's one in the scenarios?

Speaking of models Cap'n, what do we need for the set? I'm doing adventurers on the side, but don't we need minion-type critters too? Skaven or something chaos-y?

Post by: affun on 19 November 2014, 08:41:44 PM
That is one immensely well-painted ogre! I've never really thought much of the Chaos Ogre models, but this one seems to be changing my opinion.
The dungeon-tiles are neat looking as well, though still very WiP. Ive been thinking of making my own dungeon-set for Songs of Gold and Darkness, so I'll certainly be following this thread.
Title: Re: Down down to Goblin-town you go, my lad!

That is one awesome looking ogre! He'll make good adventurer-fodder for my dwarf slayer ;)

As for other critters, I've ordered a bunch of Skaven warriors, so all we really need now is chaos warriors and some boss-types and special models, like warpfire throwers and dark magicians and such.

The Ogre is a FANTASTIC piece, BEAUTIFULLY painted & based. It's much better than I had imagined that mini could be. VERY WELL DONE!

You're too kind guys!
DeafNala, cheers man.
Affun, I agree completely, I've never liked the old ogres. For some reason though, this one really grew on me during painting and I like him now. Very characterful sculpt, I think. I don't know the ruleset you're talking about, but the tiles are pretty easy to make, so good luck with them!
Cap'n, grand! I've got a skaven warlord knocking about somewhere, so that's one more sorted then. Chaos warriors I've got in droves, so no worries there. Also, let's see what slayer gets to him first - I seem to remember mine doing ok during the Mordheim game...  ;)

Time for an Update! I had a few hours this weekend to get some painting done:

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/imagejpg1_zps9733a8c9.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/imagejpg1_zps9733a8c9.jpg.html)

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/imagejpg3_zps91baf204.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/imagejpg3_zps91baf204.jpg.html)

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/imagejpg4_zpse68d73cf.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/imagejpg4_zpse68d73cf.jpg.html)

In short, we're looking at the villain in the first scenario and what will hopefully become a player character. Guess who's who.
We've settled on the new edition of D&D. I haven't played D&D since somewhere around my late teens, so I'm really looking forward to have a go at the new edition. The dungeon tiles will work well as the Lost Mines of Phandelver, I should think.

Not what I was expecting from the topic title but luverly stuff all the same. :D Klarg's skintones are excellent, and that Bretonnian conversion is brill.  :-* (But put a wee bit more yellow in the putty!)

Nice stuff here, compliments.

May I ask where "Klarg" comes from?

Looking forward to see more of you guys.

I agree, the topic title can be a bit misleading, but The Hobbit is my very favourite fantasy novel/coming of age novel/road novel, and so I thoughtit appropriate.
I shall endeavour to up the yellow part of my Green stuff. It's always been a bit of a mystery to me with the ratio, and most of the time I refrain from sculpting because of that.

@Comsquare Thanks! Klarg The Bugbear is from Reaper Minis. He's one of a pack of two Bugbears in what, if I recall correctly, is titled Bugbear Warriors from their Dark Heaven Legends series. All metal, so no bones here.

I might add that his weapon is a conversion I made from the GW empire flagellants sprue.

I shall endeavour to up the yellow part of my Green stuff. It's always been a bit of a mystery to me with the ratio, and most of the time I refrain from sculpting because of that.

More of the blue hardener causes the putty to be a bit stiffer right off the bat, and makes it cure faster; while more yellow allows it to be softer and more pliable, and with a longer working window, at the expense of some hardness of the fully cured putty. Polymeric Systems themselves started recommending 1.5 parts of yellow to 1 blue (http://www.polymericsystems.com/epoxies-adhesives/epoxy-putty-tapes/kneadatite-blue-yellow.htm) (3:2) for general sculpting, some time ago. It's a good idea, I think. I would've warned hobbyists and beginner sculptors about GS (well, unmixed with other putty, but that's another story) until that went up. :)

Looking forward to whatever's next!

I'll have to remember that for future campaigns! The Lost Mines of Phandelver suddenly seems pale and boring compared to the working title of 'Assault on the Ewok camp in the Mountain of Doom'.

Thanks to all of you for the nice comments, although most of the credit goes to Reaper for their lovely sculpting on their Dark Heavens minis. They're really a delight to paint!

Very nice brushwork. The dungeon tiles look good, too. Do I see right that you use plasticcard for these or do you use some other material?
Title: Re: Down down to Goblin-town you go, my lad!
Post by: CaptainHaddonCollider on 03 December 2014, 10:55:08 AM
Well, I'll let my friend and assosciate AWOL give you the full answer on that, but I believe that it is indeed plasticcard and little else. Although he's quite known in these circles for his skill with plastic, he might have slipped something else in here and there.

I managed to paint up some minions for Klarg. Seeing as he's a deluded Bugbear with grand illusions of his own greatness, he'd need a small retinue of Goblins to do his bidding. to keep up the facade:

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/imagejpg5_zps09bb81a5.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/imagejpg5_zps09bb81a5.jpg.html)

Regular GW oldhammer gobbos. Love 'em.

I also finished up the Fighter/Ranger type I converted from the excellent Bones character:

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/imagejpg1_zpsa301f6f3.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/imagejpg1_zpsa301f6f3.jpg.html)

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/imagejpg4_zpsa5559ff9.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/imagejpg4_zpsa5559ff9.jpg.html)

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/imagejpg3_zps548cd70f.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/imagejpg3_zps548cd70f.jpg.html)

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/imagejpg2_zps46f188ec.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/imagejpg2_zps46f188ec.jpg.html)

I think the cape and the skull-cap adds a lot to his rustic appearance, and I really hope one of the players will pick him up and make a nice folksy character out of him!

I've got a few extra goblins on the table, an elf wizard-scholar type plus some surprises of the 'innocent bystanders'-category.

Look at that ranger!  :-*  :-*  :-*

All clean and tidy. He must be a noob, he's not covered in ewok juices yet. lol lol lol lol

Cheers

Ps. Haddon, could you crop your images a little tighter around the figure? So the figures are bigger when you save for web? The ranger is teeny tinny in his surroundings.

Freshly cropped and off the paint station, here's the next two heroes:

Halfling rouge
(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/ddc3c4bb-ca4c-450b-a5dc-81dc57673b9b_zps9c016b88.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/ddc3c4bb-ca4c-450b-a5dc-81dc57673b9b_zps9c016b88.jpg.html)

Elf wizard
(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/c67bac8e-dbde-4386-8331-77720ab08273_zpsbae81ff8.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/c67bac8e-dbde-4386-8331-77720ab08273_zpsbae81ff8.jpg.html)

And more Goblins! These are the last for now, as I am all out of unpainted greenskins (if anyone happen to have some old citadel Common Goblins to spare, I'd like to hear from you!).
(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/imagejpg3_zpsa5dd7ba1.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/imagejpg3_zpsa5dd7ba1.jpg.html)

I have all the essentials together for the first part of the adventure, which is really nice. As I read through the rules for the new edition, I get more and more hooked on the game. It brings back a lot of the old feeling from my early days as an adventurer (before my Paladin took and arrow to the knee...and the face. And a few to the gut as well. And got mashed by a large rock.). Anyways, everything I do from now on is pretty much just icing on the cake and stuff for future quests. The DM's handbook should contain a pretty nifty dungeon generator, so the dungeon tiles will come well in handy.
But for now, I'm working on some of the most tested and tried denizens of the Realms. The salt of the earth, the poor and the hardworking: Peseants!

(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx48/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/imagejpg1_zpsa8264ea9.jpg) (http://s740.photobucket.com/user/mikkeltheonetrickpony24/media/imagejpg1_zpsa8264ea9.jpg.html)

Still a way to go with these, but we're getting there.
