So while having the other set worked on in the Medieval Era and having a soft spot for Asian games and Rpg's, i decided to get these done..Take a look and let me know your thoughts on them whilst they are still sketches.
First we have the hero's:
1) “Roban” the Hood. The young one time lord returned to his lands and finding it governed by a corrupt Governor. He carries his Yumi and his grandfathers Daisho
(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w470/BOFStudio/roban-the-hood-sketch_zps21633c08.jpg) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/BOFStudio/media/roban-the-hood-sketch_zps21633c08.jpg.html)
2) Mariako. Our heroine, she has run away from the court to join her beloved in the forests and uses her healing skills and kindness to help the peasants who they defend.
(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w470/BOFStudio/mariako-sketch_zpsa2a6bfd0.jpg) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/BOFStudio/media/mariako-sketch_zpsa2a6bfd0.jpg.html)
3) “ Little” Jo’ho. Since returning home, Roban has met up with the leader of the bandits living in the surrounding forests, a giant of a man by the name of Jo’ho. It amuses the men to call him little.
(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w470/BOFStudio/little-joho-sketch_zps18198343.jpg) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/BOFStudio/media/little-joho-sketch_zps18198343.jpg.html)
4) Tuku, the Monk. A rotund man, with many vices such as drink and food. A sake gourd hangs around him never far from his lips.
(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w470/BOFStudio/tuku-the-monk-sketch_zps23545f92.jpg) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/BOFStudio/media/tuku-the-monk-sketch_zps23545f92.jpg.html)

Fantastic idea 8) 8) 8)
All the traditional Robin Hood senarios can be used for this along with new ones :D
cheers
James

Very nice - the sketches are brilliant 8) 8) 8)
-
Bloody clever idea, sir.

-
Awesome idea. Sketches look great.
-
Lovely idea. The idea of a Norimono being held up in the forest is something I would like to see ;)
-
Haha, brilliant!
Can't wait to see what you do with the other merry men. Or even what you'll call the merry men. :D ;)
-
Hi all and glad to see the ideas been welcomed :) I guess this will make it my New Years Project
Haha, brilliant!
Can't wait to see what you do with the other merry men. Or even what you'll call the merry men. :D ;)
Well just working on names and such for the map so feel free to drop suggestions down for anything you think of, at the moment we have the great forest of Shu Wud
Lovely idea. The idea of a Norimono being held up in the forest is something I would like to see ;)
Consider that one adapted :) The Norimono Clan as bad guys it is.
As a fat greedy tax collector type i thought this would suit
(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w470/BOFStudio/FatMerchant_zpsece986c3.png) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/BOFStudio/media/FatMerchant_zpsece986c3.png.html)
Have the two main villains being worked on so these are early types that will probably find their place elsewhere unless people think they suit.
Lord Oyu Rotta, The Governor of Norhigan, Ruling the Ronin’s lands on behalf of the Prince he serves with utter contempt and loathing for those beneath him.

Gytio of Gizboko. His ruthless henchman. He controls the governors men, His clothing emphasises his build and power.
(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w470/BOFStudio/Warrior1_zpsb8ec6392.png) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/BOFStudio/media/Warrior1_zpsb8ec6392.png.html)

Very good indeed although might I humbly suggest the name of Shi-Woda for the forest as it's more in keeping with the Japanese language style :)
cheers
James

Shi-Woda it is :D
-
Oh, but this looks like fun!
Great concepts, and great art to match. :-*
Fusion music, fusion cooking, and now fusion gaming... lol
-
This is awesome. Great art too.
-
'Oyu Rotta' lol
-
Wow.
Nice idea.
Drawings are lovelly and an idea of a robin hood in japan seems very interesting.
Some samurai in their day clothes would also be welcome.

No, no - Norimono is a litter used by the wealthy:

As Ronin and his band won't have many carriages to hold up.

Very good idea and the art is very nice.
Will Lord Oyu send some shinobi into the Shi Woda Mori to get rid of those who stand against him?
-
Like those. :-* :-*
Very good indeed.
Minis should be done in action poses for squirmish games.
I´m loving your work and ideas AndyW.

The idea is not to have any sculpts done that are quite as static as the artwork shows. give them a little movement and such. :)
Ninja....now we need a good name for them...Terrifying yet comical i think ?
As for other bits, what do you guys think it needs ? or whose missing ?

Wei 'Scar' Lao (terribly contrived and more Chinese than Japanese :( )

The evil governor looks like the Jesuit from Shogun ;)
cheers

Fantastic idea, great sketches.
I look forward to seeing more.

This is all looking rather delicious

So, while i am waiting to see how a few pictures end up in reality and painting a few proxy pieces up to test decided to get a little bit of a campaign map done. Let me know if you have any suggestions for places and such
(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w470/BOFStudio/map-wip1_zpsgezrdice.jpg) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/BOFStudio/media/map-wip1_zpsgezrdice.jpg.html)
-
I like that a lot :) :) :)
cheers
James
-
You can always do a "good warlord" campaigning outside the lands and the good guys waiting is return while fighting for freedom.
A kind of King Richard the Lionheart.
Also you could use some rank and file men for both sides. :D
-
All in the plan...
-
Slow progress on this for the moment but have just had a couple of WIP's on some back for example:
(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w470/BOFStudio/Ronin%20Hood%20_zpsqggym9cp.png) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/BOFStudio/media/Ronin%20Hood%20_zpsqggym9cp.png.html)
His right hand will be carrying the Tetsubo ala this image:
(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w470/BOFStudio/Warrior1_zpsb8ec6392.png) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/BOFStudio/media/Warrior1_zpsb8ec6392.png.html)
Once these four are done i will be passing along the images for the first four, Ronin and his merry band :)
-
This is a fantastic idea! Looking forward to seeing the sculpts.
-
Better photos and paintjobs to follow but for now we have..
A Monk Character
(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w470/BOFStudio/monk_zpsnt5cwvml.jpg) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/BOFStudio/media/monk_zpsnt5cwvml.jpg.html)

Coming along nicely 8)
I need to send you an email this afternoon (when I get a break from painting the new house).
cheers
James
-
Just got some images of Finished pieces of my sculptor, these were character peices from another tied in project and should suit well with what i am after. let me know what you think
(http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w470/BOFStudio/IMG_3877_zpskkrjkiqf.jpg) (http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/BOFStudio/media/IMG_3877_zpskkrjkiqf.jpg.html)
Next up will be Ronin and his band
-
I really like them, hell, I'd probably buy them if you had them cast
-
Those are really nice. Women and unarmoured men are hard to find for this period.
-
When do you think they will be ready and where they will be available for purchase? :-* :o
I'm looking forward to see the full series.
Ciao
-
Hopefully first three sets will be the end of April / Beginning of May, followed by periodic releases of certain packs :)
-
Very nice scultps, clean lines, well defined detail, excellent. ;D
-
Very, very cool.
Love the whole idea.
Your figures look outstanding.
Am excited to see what is next.
-
Great looking project - I particularly like the way the women figures have been realised....how do they compare size wise with other ranges may I enquire ?....think I shall be acquiring the unarmored figures just to enjoy painting them
-
Andy, really nice sculps/characters. :-* :-*
-
So...I'm about to speak to a sculptor over doing three or four " armed " guards to go with our evil magistrate and was thinking what would appeal ? Armoured ? no Armour ? Separate poseable heads and weapon hands ala Crooked Dice ?
Let me know your thoughts guys
-
Armoured guards are always welcome and they can be used as rank and file figures.
Separated heads and hands with weapons gives a lot more variety in terms of gaming but you will have to make more molds (one for the body, one for the hand/weapon and one for the head).
-

Personally I would be more interested in I armoured or lightly armoured guys. Mostly because their is an adundance of 28mm armoured samurai but far fewer unarmoured ones. Either would be cool though.
-
Unarmoured would be the best choice. How many Kurasawa films have we seen where the antagonists have a plethora of 'extras' to get stabbed, slashed and beaten up by Toshiro Mifune :D
Separate heads and weapons would be an excellent move also so with only a couple of torsos there would be plenty of options.
cheers
James
-
Another vote for unarmoured, and I wou like to say, marvellous work so far
-
Cracking range, watching eagerly :D
-
Been working on a test character sheet for the range, let me know what you think

Just had some WIP's of the next lot including Roban and his gang, few revisions to be made but think they are looking very good so far :)

-
They do look lovely.
:-* :-*
-
ohmy those are amazing! Where do I sign?!
-
I'll admit...if these went into production, I'd be hard pressed not to buy some. I've been looking for an excuse to buy up a nice old Japanese town and get some Samurai/Japanese gaming in.
-
These look really good, sculpts excellent. Like the idea of no armour and male female figures.Well done when do you think they will be available.

This seems to be a range of minis that I need to have 8)
The greens look great and the new lot seems to be on the same track as well :D
-
So far so good Andy.
Keep it coming. :)
-
Excellent work :-* :-*
Are there going to be figures with more 'action poses'?
cheers
James
-
Nice art work. Only comment is that Japanese bows don't tend to be held at the centre but used asymmetrically.
-
also please note the bare shoulder!
-
also please note the bare shoulder!
That seems to be primarily for the men, the woman in the photo doesn't have the shoulder uncovered
-
I believe it would be a nice touch if the upper part of the dress (over one of the shoulders) would be folded down, leaving exposed not the bare shoulder (for obvious reasons) but an undergarment.
-
Where the website for ordering these?
-
Some new concepts for you all.

Hi Andy
These look as good as the previous ones.
You indicated that they would be available in may. Have I missed them or has there been a delay.
Looking forward to seeing the greens from these
-
The angle of the Katana is not correct with the orientation of the hands.
And the way they hold it too :
The two hands are always aligned (knuckles aligned) and the little finger of the left hand covers the end of the kashira (end pommel)
The end of the saya (scabbard) is generally flat.
-
Great job! I realy want the lady with the pekingese dog. Reminds me of my own pup

So had the first images back and apart from one or two changes ( remodel of hat, too pointy, and blade, too thick ) i think they look spot on :) Let me know your thoughts

Great things :)

Got to get round to painting the ones I got off you back at Phalanx - the new ones are looking good!
I do have to agree on the comment about the bow - watched a local kyudo contest in Seki last year and it seemed to be the done thing to raise the bow higher?
-
just had some images back of a few additions, thought i would share them with you

Hi
I have been watching this for a while, are these figures available? If so how do we get them. I love the civilians and unarmored figures.
Thanks
William
-
The Civilians and Unarmored are due to go down to the casters in the new year, along with a set of unarmoured Ronin types and a couple of Shugenja as we as, a Noble family set, and a Palanquin ( normimono )
Been working on some base rules for them and at the stage where i am wondering if Small handy Profile cards might be a good idea.
-
I look forward to giving you my money next year :D
-
Civilians are definitely a great addition - many of them will be useful for a very long period and many possible wargames eras.
-
Both your artwork and sculpting amaze me. Absolutely amazing!
-
How can we get the Ronin Hood miniatures? Is there an online shop?
Thanks.

Just drop me a pm for now, website is being worked on by a very slooow worker ( brothers working on it in between jobs :) )

-
I love the poses and drapery of the robes, but unless it's the pictures, the faces look a bit soft and might not come too well through moulding.
-
Yeah, they do look soft. At first, I thought they were 15mm sculpts. Because of the fact that I've been doing a lot of 15mm sculpting.

Just had these shots back from one of the sculptors, let me know what you think

-
:-* :-* :-* Great art work and miniatures I love them!!!
Please consider to do a Palanquin and some carriers with bagas or other Lord things, I think can play many scenarios with them. Unarmored samurai with yaris and yumi are the best option in my opinion!! ;D
-
Those awe wonderful sculpts, nice fine weapons too
-
Definitely interested in these, but no hobby budget/time at the moment. Leaving this comment to stay informed till that opportune time strikes. ;)
-
Definitely interested in some of these... :-*
-
Yarp, me too :-*

Love the little guys (frogs? Or turtles?). And nice details on the faces.

Great minis can't wait to order some

Kappas. River yokai that are a mixture of frogs, turtles, and monkeys. They can be depowered if the water is drained out of the crater atop their head. They also love cucumbers.
-
This project just keeps getting better and better!

First image on Google search for "Kappas" explains everything:

Say no more.

Will order almost all of these they are just great for my Ronin Games, love the Fantasy stuff to keep going on that.

I like the kappa a lot.
-
Any news on these lovely minis, would love to place an order :D
-
Due from the Casters any day, then let me check em and will let you all know they are here and ready :)
-
Will these become a range available somewhere? Or is this a short burn "get them while they're hot" type deal? I'd love to get some of these but funds are tight this month.
Just read through the entire thread again, love it, both the idea and the execution.
-
It will be an ongoing range :)
-
Looking really good. I wish I could sculpt figures like this!
-
Got my castings back and put some primer and ink on some of them :)
( sorry for the crappy photos.. )

Some pictures up there with a little more light but waiting on better ones from a more talented hand :) Will post some up later tonight :)
Also have added a simple little ruleset that we tried out at Phalanx, seemed to go down very well.

Looks great, any chance of a quick run down of the rules
-
I’ll try and get another game in with one of the lads this week and take a few pictures to better describe how a game runs. :)
The idea i went with was to keep it quick and simple. I guess complex can come later as the game and setting evolves.
Each Character, from Roban the Hero to the lowest peasant has a Character Card containing a brief description and a four stat line. These are used for:
Attack ( Self Explanatory ),
Defence ( Does exactly what it says on the tin ),
Charisma ( This is used to influence surrounding Characters and Npcs ),
Spirit ( This is our method of dealing with all things spiritual and magical, also works for our Flight and Flee rule ).
Each Character has a Karma stone stat. These represent how much fate they can use each turn.
So you’ve picked your force. Now you add up their Karma. This ranges from 1 for a peasant to 2 for most Hero’s or Characters. You may choose to add good Karma ( White ) or bad Karma ( black ) adding up the Karma and rounding up and adding two additional stones or counters of both colours. These now represent the force of fate and are added to a bag. These are given a good shuffle and drawn blind and allocated to your Characters.
Each Character gets TWO actions. These can be added to by the use of Karma ( more on this later ) One action is a movement action and the other can be an Attack or Special Ability or Charisma / Spirit action ( or sacrificed to give an additional move of 6” thereby running )
Movement is a simple 6”
Attacks are rolled via their strength ranging from 1D6 to 3D6 with plus’s for Weapons and such ( a Katana adds a +2, a rock adds +1 )
And with the choice to use any Karma allocated to influence ( White Karma - good adds a + 1 to defence or Black Karma adds a + 1 to attack )
These are defended against by rolling Higher then the roll to attack again with plus’s for armour and any Karma added.
With me so far ? then i’ll continue.
So, that was the basics of attack, move, defend, now we get to your Abilities.
Each Character gets an ability, in some cases two. These are triggered with the use of Karma. Some are basic such as the peasants ability of:
At the cost of Any 1 Karma Stone they may move another 6”
to some such as Yumiko the scribe who could have spent:
Any 1 Karma stone to make an additional 8” move
or
A White Karma stone to stop one attack on herself from one Character
Play moves then to the next player or players to activate one of their models then moves back that way people are getting wiped out before they got a turn in.
Should a player loose more then 50% of his force in that turn, then they make a Fight or Flee roll against the player with the Highest Karma on the table. Spirit is rolled and if the affected player rolls equal or under they flee the battle.
Once everyone has acted, any counters used to represent actions played or status effects and casualties removed then dice are rolled again for initiative and all Karma returned and drawn again taking into account models removed. Then onto turn 2..

Any idea, when you will release the figures???
-
Really great minis, how is it possible that I overlooked this thread so long!
:o 8)
-
Hi Andy
These look really good, had a look at your site, it's a bit difficult to get a good impression of the figures from the pictures, but I will try and compare them to what you have posted on here.
Do you have any comparrison for size with the Perry figures, as all my collection is Perry and I am very tempted to add your figures to it.
Thanks
-
Missed the reopening of the shop. Ordered it today. Great, that you released them!!!!
-
Got my parcel today, the figures are so wonderful and full of character. They need more support.
-
Hi
I am busy painting up some of the figures I bought a few months back. Am now looking to order more, however, your website needs some work.
First the photos are way to dark, if you have an automatic camera you need to have a medium gray back ground so that the figures do not get to dark. If you do want to use the gradiated background then adjust the light setting in your camera to much lighter, it will wash out the background somewhat but the figures will look good.
The painting on the figures is mediocre, either get a really good painter or just take good photos of the figures with the wash on them as you have shown here. Badly painted figures are a real problem for people buying the figures. Often they cannot see the quality of the figure, which yours do have.
Also drop the resolution on the photos on your site to 75 or 150 pixels, it needs to load faster. Marketers now say that if an image does not load in 2-3 seconds people will click away from the site. This might not happen with yours but boy it is annoying to have to wait for the images to load.
Also have your website on all your messages on this site, it is a pain to search thru the messages to find it, and it will make it easier for any one going thru the messages to link to your site.
I really like your figures I bought 50 GBP of them last time and my new order should be about the same. So please take the above comments as only as a desire to help you sell more figures, so that I can get more figures in the future ;)
Thanks
William

Andy, it is real quiet on your front? Some new stuff in the next time? You should show more of these fantastic figures...

A very wise decision. They are so wonderful, but unknown :(

They will be if we keep ordering. :)
Slowly they will appear in games and photos and people will start buying them.

Many thanks guys and yes, not done with it and more ideas in the mill :) And many thanks to those of you who placed orders :)
Been having some of the art coloured by a good friend of mine for an update / add on book to the first ( mainly on setting and such ) and had some more concepts drawn out ready to send to the sculptor.
Let me know what you think :) First our Heros as they are :)
