Title: Tale of an Epic Gamer - the beginning
Post by: sean_68333 on January 07, 2015, 02:52:38 PM
I have decided to join the Tale of an Epic Gamer painting project on the TacCom forum, but thought I would share my progress here as well.

My goal is to paint at least 700 points of Epic figures each month in 2015. I hope to complete four different 2,000 point Epic 40k armies.

I have started with Orks and have made good progress so far.

You can see more details and pictures on my blog.  http://gamingandshooting.blogspot.com/2015/01/tale-of-epic-gamer-2015.html (http://gamingandshooting.blogspot.com/2015/01/tale-of-epic-gamer-2015.html)

Here is a batch of Bonecrushas.  These have been primed in white and have a yellow wash applied.  These models will make up the majority of my vehicle support for this army.  I have a good number already and they are fairly cheap to add more.

The Nobz will lead the infantry units in battle.  These guys get the same white primer and yellow wash and then the weapons were painted brass.  The bases still need to be painted and a bit of flock will be added.

Finally, no ork force is complete without some gretchin (or grots for you younger gamers).  These guys tag along to all the fights and can add some cheap numbers to your fighting force.

As you can see, the painting level is pretty basic, but for this scale, I think it is good.  I want to be able to look at the models on the table and like how they look.

I hope you enjoy these.  I will continue to post pictures as I progress though the year.

Everything looks lovely so far, nice yellow, it's quite a tricky colour but you managed fairly well, specially on the vehicles! Love them!

So I hear.  But after a bit of statistical analysis it has been determined that the improved speed characteristics do not over compensate for the increased target priority that also comes along with a red paint job.   ;)

I also painted a test model for a detachment of Goff Gutrippas.  I'd love to hear your thoughts on this model.

Hurrah!

Really nice yellow! The goff tank isn't bad either. The washes work really well on all of them. What are those, diluted paint, GW washes, or...?

Excellent start - I look forward to seeing this progress!

The Bad Moons force is looking good.

As for the Goff tank, in my opinion, it needs a (small-ish) dash of red somewhere! :)

agreed, all very nice but the Goff tank needs something to make it stand out a bit more, and a bit of red somewhere would do it.

The base colors on these are GW washes.  I use Vallejo and Army Color paints for everything else.

I thought about that too.  I wonder if I did the skull on the front in red if that would work.

Cute as.

Only comment is the flocking looks weird - the orks are heeding the signs: "keep off the grass!"

True.  But I think I'm stuck with that.  The base hides more easily in the gravel than it would in the grass.

For 6mm I sand/gravel the whole base and then static grass/flock on top of that.

For 6mm I sand/gravel the whole base and then static grass/flock on top of that.

I'm doing that for some of my other Epic forces.  I have been trying to do the bases a little different for each force to make them distinctive.

I added a bit more color to the Goff Gutrippa.  I painted part of the turret and the claws in red and washed them with GW Agrax Earthshade.  I think this is a big improvement.  It isn't too much, but enough to break up the black and white.  I will be adding a base at some point as well.  Thoughts?

So I hear.  But after a bit of statistical analysis it has been determined that the improved speed characteristics do not over compensate for the increased target priority that also comes along with a red paint job.   ;)

I thought Orks always said 'never tell me the odds...'

Oh. Wait.  :D

I thought about that too.  I wonder if I did the skull on the front in red if that would work.

I was going to suggest a splash of red, even some flames, with a white skull in the middle, but this pretty impressive.

Next month I will be working on my Biel-tan Eldar force.

I'll keep hunting in the basement.

You want some fly guys? The Full Thrust ideas for 'em have kinda died.

Sorry, pansy air force.  lol

I had some idea for semi-organic spaceships from Eldar Epic bombers and fighters, but have given up on those.

I'll have 'em by the store sometime for you to decide.

For February I will be working on some Eldar.  As it turns out I actually got a few models done last month in between orks.  I seem to have a little trouble focusing.

My goal for February is going to be a bit large since I've already made some progress.

The goal is 2 Jetbike hosts, a Guardian host, and a Defender host (Guardians with Falcons).

I already have 1 Jetbike host finished.

And I've finished a detachment of Guardians. (there will be three detachments in each host)

I've also got a whole host of Guardians ready to be based.

And I've completed the first of the Falcons. (there will be 9 total this month)

As always, I'd love to hear what you all think and I'm open to suggestions (even if I don't follow them).

Progress is coming along well as I work toward my February goal.  I've got some more Guardians primed and just need to dig up some Warlocks to make some command stands.

"The Maines were maybe a bit over-powered.  I think in the next game I will take away the rule that they can ignore wounds that don't kill a model and have those wounds stay in place.  I think I will also boost the size of the Ork infantry units to 15 stands per mob."

Don't know about the Maines, but the Marines really done me in.  lol

Actually, I wouldn't go to(o) quickly making that first change; it was very Emperor's finest. Bump up the ork numbers a bit, but if I ever actually use tactics, being sure to try and concentrate on smaller groups of the hoomies might be sufficient to turn the day. A wasted 'wound' out of every three or five is frustrating.

A wasted wound out of 21 is just amusing.  ;)

Of course, the same can be said for the fact that the Marines were fully deployed while the Orks had reinforcements. I know it's a magic term, but does mean force concentration is even tricker, especially with random, on-edge placement.

Well done making such progress on your forces so far, these models bring back some happy memories :) Nice painting and basing styles too, particularly the Ork infantry basing for me.

Only issue for me is your Ork tank barrels - perhaps a dot of black to show where the barrel muzzles are? :)

Keep it up!

For May, I'm working on Imperial Guard.

My first unit is an infantry company.  This 33 stands with 4 models per stand; that is 132 infantry models plus 2 command vehicles.  That is a lot of infantry.  The plan is for a simple color palette.

I've decided on a basic grey with a black wash.  I will add bits of color to distinguish units on the field.

The vehicles painted up very quickly and the infantry went fairly quickly as well.  This army will eventually have a rather large number of models so I chose a pretty simple paint scheme, but it still looks pretty decent.

I'm glad you guys like them.  I've been kind of wandering, from army to army, but that is helping to keep me interested.  I've surprised myself with how much progress I've made so far.  The Orks are coming along very well and I will have a unit of Goff tanks finished before the month is out.

I'm thinking some Speed Freaks will be showing up when the Orks come back to my paint table.  Probably some buggies, traks, and lots of bikes.  I'm not sure how well the ink/wash approach will work with red, but I've been surprised how well it worked with the other colors, so I'm hopeful at this point.

August is in the books and I've another update on my painting project.

Great progress that totals 1,500 points using the NetEpic Gold rules.

I need to paint more command units to be able to legally field what I have painted so far.

I am also thinking about adding ripper swarms, but don't know what to use?  Have any of you done ripper swarms for you epic army?

While these guys are not technically part of my established schedule, I picked them up at a convention and thought I would paint a few models to see how they look.

They are the Andrayadas from Dark Realm Miniatures.

They will likely be used as Necron proxies.

Very easy to paint and they look nice.

Really nice work. The bases set off the bright colours nicely, and the remind me of both SM2 and E:A at the same time!  8)

Actually this is only 3 months worth of work.  Not a bad little force.

I still have stuff I want to add, but this army is done.  At least for now.

Another month into this project and another pile of painted models to share.

Tyranids were on my table in October.  I needed to paint up some command/synapse creatures to balance out the force a little.

I completed:

A Dominatrix.

The Imperial Guard are on my paint table this month.

My plan is to complete a Beastmen Company, finish the Leman Russ Company, and 2 squadrons of Sentinels.

I am a bit late with my update on this project, but a new house (and renovation) has really put a damper on my painting.

With that said, I have finished up my Imperial Guard project and took a few pictures.

While I failed to paint anything in December, I still thought I would share a couple of photos of my Ork army.  This is what I would have been working on in December and since I posted photos of each of the other armies in their entirety I thought the Orks deserved the same treatment.

Tanks, tanks, and tanks... and a few walkers
(http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zXb0OO4eq28/VpQIKIERgfI/AAAAAAAAHn8/l1q9PRBTs38/s400/blogger-image-28870543.jpg)

Some boyz and more tanks
(http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_i7dQWiql1M/VpQH_pqhmEI/AAAAAAAAHnc/ncCecrknVwA/s400/blogger-image-1452507359.jpg)

The whole army to date.

I went a little overboard with the tanks so I can't actually make a very big legal army using the NetEpic Gold rules, but with the NetEA rules, I can put a 3,600 point force on the table with 5 'Uge Blitz Brigades plus a few other warbands on top of that.

I haven't painted any Epic recently, but I got an itch and pulled out some Space Marine vehicles to paint.  I need more Rhinos for my force and thought I would add a few Rhinos and Hunters while I was at it.

I've continued with the same basic paint job that I've used on all my marines, but switched to a different spray for the base coat.  I'm pleased with the results.

A few Rhinos to transport my troops.
