I completely finished my build then realised that the start date wasn't until tomorrow so I took it apart. Shame too, it was great. :D
-
Heh. I'm glad we all got the smack talk starting early.

lol I fully expect to be destroyed!

Ok, Plan A is to create a meat cold store facility for modern gaming. I'm thinking along the lines of a central cold store with some smaller cold stores that would be used for variations in temperature requirements. Meat is apparently normally stored at about. -2.2 degree C so a few smaller cold stores for lower temperatures would be practical. I've looked at condensers, blowers and evaporators so they'll have to be included. The floor will be concrete and I'll go for an old style tiled wall rather than a modern lining. The look will be an old facility partially upgraded rather than ultra modern. I intend to use it for my South East Asia modern imagi-nation, zombies and perhaps at a push Judge Dredd as an old black market meat locker.
I'd like to incorporate hanging meat so I may have to make them.
Plan B is an exploding ACW cannon.
Plan C is to give up.
-
Sounds cool (pun not intended) 8) 8) 8)
-
Sounds great. The 40K Kroot plastic set has bits of hanging meat that may be useful.

You know I was sure I'd seen meat on a plastic sprue somewhere. That's probably where, cheers Karsten. I may have to try some putty pushing.

Happy to send you some if you want.

Happy to send you some if you want.
Thanks mate. I'll have a dabble myself first to try and keep the 10% non scratchbuilt element and save you the hassle! Very kind of you though, cheers. :)
-
As it's Day One I'll say a big "good luck" to everyone participating.
-
Good luck to you too matey :)
Hope you stick with plan A, it sounds great :D
cheers
James
-
Cheers!
Unfortunately Plan A has the most amount of work, unlike Plan C, which is easy!
-
By the way, don't Google 'meat locker' as an image search. There's stuff there you really don't want to see (unless you do, in which is fine. Each to their own :D).
-
Looking forward to seeing it.
-
Floor plan sketch. It's a gaming piece rather than something that would probably work in practice.
-
Roof plan and elevations.
Sorry for the piss poor images, I had to photograph the plans as for some reason the gifs failed after the first.
-
This is looking great. I like the fact that you included toilets; not something very common in gaming scenery.
-
Plans...what are they?
Looks fab and very smart...
-
And a lot more professional than my effort.
-
Very nice, CAD2008?
-
LT ;)
-
Autodesk 2010. Unfortunately as I was trying to use my phone to post it wouldn't let me transfer the gifs. I meant to sort it out tonight as well as start the build, but I've been putting up storage units instead. I'm not complaining though as I've had my BLAM approval!
-
Very nice. Hanging meat and so on should look cool in that. Makes me think of Predator 2. Cool
-
I definitely want to do some hanging meat (there's another one for the image search ban list). The only thing I was thinking is that it still needs access for hands as a gaming piece so I either need to be sparing of where I place them or make them removable. I'm thinking of the latter.
-
Toilet yes, good, but where's the staff canteen?
I think it's going to make a really good piece for gaming.
-
This looks like a HUGE challenge. Good luck and I will follow this (and all others) with interest.
Tony

Yes, it's somewhat daunting but remember it will be nowhere near the level of quality you would aspire to! Think crayoned shoe box with windows and you're getting there.
-
A few shots of the main building. Painting this is going to be a pain! :D
-
Nice 8)
-
Hey that looks great.
-
Very nice fleshing out so to speak. Pun intended. The skeleton of the building is working out. I am interested how you will do the meat. The only advice I can give you is to look at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1c3YYXa-Izw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1c3YYXa-Izw)
People usually miss out doll house toots. Again Very cool.
Snitchy sends.
-
That's pretty cool Snitchy. I'm interested in how I'm going to do the meat too! I've just realised I'm short of the plasticard I want to use for the tiles. Bugger! A trip to the railway shop in far off Stockton is in order. As this is going to be a building in my modern South East Asia imagi-nation Bac Ky, I'm playing around with some ideas for added character. I've already made the sign for 'Global Cold Storage'.
-
Well, pretty much the whole evening was spent taping up exposed foamcore, so there isn't much to see. On the plus side I did find a second batch of plasticard squirrelled away so I've got enough now.
I noticed two things; if I have any figures on 2p pieces they're not going to fit on the lower roof if I put the lanterns in as planned; and the plant room doesn't look right for the setting. I'm going to redo it as a corrugated box, which is not great for temperature control but will look better.
-
The internal cold store area has now been clad in tiles, as have the bottom courses of blockwork to the external walls (though I keep knocking them off). The external walls will be cement rendered. I want to build in some advertising boards to break up the elevations.
I've redone the skylights to the office space as flat units as otherwise figure placement would be really limited. I've also undertaken a test piece for the curtains that will reduce chill loss and it's come out pretty well.
I've decided to cut out a few sections of the internal walls to drop two lengths of plastic I beam in. They will carry the meat racks. They're going to be perpendicular to the chilled air flow, which doesn't seen right, but they'll be better for gaming. They'll also be removable.
-
Piccys please :D
Use sprays for the main painting, does the job every time :)
cheers

I'll get some on ce soir. I'm hoping to use my new airbrush for the painting. Should be interesting.

Looking good so far, mate.
A sound idea.
8)
Why not just use green stuff for the meat.
easy enough shapes and you only need an approximation.
Either that or chop up some cheap toy animals.
;)
Look forward to the progress piccies.

:D
Funnily enough I've been considering both options. I couldn't find plastic animals that were either sized right or in the right poses. I don't think I actually have any green stuff as it turned solid. I have some das clay so might try that.
-
I don't think I've ever seen greenstuff turn solid. It must have been really old. This being said, it does become hard and difficult to work withd. I buy it in semi-industrial quantity and keep it in the freezer where it lasts forever. Obviously that's a bit late for your batch.
If it's not rock solid you might rescue it by mixing it with your clay. However, if you do so, be very careful with the curing. You can also soften old greenstuff it by soaking it in hot water for a minute or so. It does work for a short while but reduces the hardening time. This method is therefore far form ideal if you want to sculpt something challenging.
-
This stuff was probably at least ten years old! I'll let the clay slightly harden and see if I can carve something out. I only need 8 or 9.
-
A few new shots. I have a plan in mind for how this building will fit in to my imagi-nation. It's starting to change initial ideas slightly.
-
Go, go, go.
-
Niiice! Those tiles are going to look good.
-
Very cool! 8)
It's quite a massive build, will look grand when finished (pun intended).
-
I like that 8) 8) 8)
Might steal an idea or two for the building I'm making on my supers thread.

I thought you couldn't cut plastic card? :?

Impressive.

You haven't seen all the bits I threw away!
I didn't get anything done last night thanks to a projectile vomiting toddler, but I should get the exterior walls done tonight.

Just wait until you have the emotional teeter totter of a pre-teen. It looks like you will be able to work then: "LisaupsetmetodayandIhavestewed (sob) onitforfivehoursandIthinkshemeansthis (insert breath and sob) andnotthatandnowIamintears (sob) soyouwillhavetostopeverythingand fixit noooooooooow!!!!!!!!"
At least there is no washing up afterwords. lol

At least it wasn't all over my model!

That would have been quite a plastering! :-X

If I could paint with that kind of coverage I'd have it done in no time! I'm going with an acrylic caulking with a bit of pva and water mixed on for a cement render type finish. I quite fancy a light blue wash finish to the render, what do you think? Blue is the corporate colours of Global Cold Storage, recently set up in Bak Ky (my South East Asia imagi-nation). This safehouse storage facility will prove very useful.
-
Just finished my first attempt at the beef carcasses. I've made them out of das clay so they're still a little fragile. I'll try and hang them up for a photo once they dry. The das is old and a little fragile. I've taken a leaf out of Silent Invader and added a liberal dose of superglue.
-
So a tube's worth? Look forward to the results.
-
Keen to see how the cement render looks, any wip pics of that? Blue colour sounds good to me.
-

The test I did looked too much like an artex so I need a smoother finish. I might need to use polyfilla as a base instead as the acrylic might be too sticky.
In other news, here is the meat. The carcasses are only shown on a temporary wire for the purpose of the photo. The size of the carcasses is based on the Warlord Games dead cattle. I've checked against photos of people in such facilities and the size and hanging height looks about right. Zombie for scale only! It's a recent bazaar purchase that was to hand.
-
That's quite a complex Steve 8)
In tv and movies many a nefarious activity seems to occur in such places...... All sorts of gaming possibilities.
-
Looking mighty fine and spooky as well 8)
Great work on those carcasses.
Do you have access to Vallejo stuff, their Fine White Pumice is quite suitable I think.
-
:o
That looks fantastic!
Also, now I feel like frying some bacon :P
-
Mmmm, steak.
-
Thats creepy!......... Cool! ;)
-
These carcasses look great. I agree, very creepy scenery!
-
Thank you for the comments guys. I like the last photo with the shadows of the carcasses.
I like the colour of the raw clay but I'll be painting them up as per my reference material (my Google search history must mark me out as a weirdo now, but it's all in the name of accuracy and atmosphere!).
-
So now you need to figure out at way to wargame the Rocky movies..
-
They look spot on, mate.
Impressed!
:-* :-*

I looked that up after reading your comment and it looks like a good product. The only thing is I'd need a lot of it and it's not cheap! Nice product though. Thanks
-
A shot with the curtain in place; you know the sort of thing you see to reduce temperature loss / gain in temperature controlled environments. These are the dividers between the main cold store area and the entrance lobbies.
The first shot looks blurred but it's light reflected from the plastic curtain.
-
Very slick!

-
That plastic curtain looks spot on.
I am getting to like this build more and more with each update.
8) 8)
-
Loving it more and more mate :D
-
Thanks guys. The walls that you can see to the non-cold store areas will probably be clad with a blockwork pattern plasticard and whitewashed. That should keep the interior quite bright for gaming.
-
I'm liking this build :)
-
I got most of the internal brickwork plasticard in and 3 of the external walls plastered last night. A smooth render was lost at that scale so I've gone back to a rougher texture. I still haven't decided what to do for the office interior yet, I'm torn between just spraying it white and accepting the masking taped edges to the exposed foamcore, cladding it in brickwork, or wallpapering it.
I also put the plasticard hoarding up for the signs and adverts. It helps break things up a bit on the plain walls.
I'll try and get a photo of the walls tonight as I completely forgot last night (I was watching Walking Dead Season 3 and I think I was traumatised!).
-
Nice build. The carcasses and curtain look spot-on. 8)
-
Thanks Paul. I still have a lot to do on it. Maybe I should have gone with something smaller!
-
The walls are meant to be done with a cement render. The panel is for signage. I need to tidy up some of the edges.
-
Windows in (temporarily) and base coat on the exterior. Just the toilet and lobby to texture, the doors, the meat racks, the blowers and evaporators and tge painting to do. :-X
-
Looking good - don't slow down now.
-
Looking good, don't let your project stall now... as I have mine :/
-
Only just picked up on the post now, but sterling work all around Steve. Great subject choice as it will work with a multitude of genres and should have a nice freak-out effect on players! Can't wait to see it fully completed.
-
Coming together nicely.
Tony
-
Thanks guys. It's stalled at the moment thanks to dealing with a toddler with chickenpox. Last time I entered the Build Something contest he ended up in hospital so at least he's decreased the severity this time round. Come to think of it he got hand, foot and mouth two BLAMs ago too. Perhaps he's allergic to me gaming?

Thanks Niall. It's primarily a key location for my modern imagi-nation but it'd be great for zombie games too.
-

Nah! It's just that when they are young they torture you with physical stuff...
...wait til they get older and start the mental stuff!!!
-
Well there's something to look forward to Niall!
I tried to sort the doors out last night but I can't quite get them how I want them. I've seen sliding doors on a cold store photo that I'd like to emulate and I'd like to have them working. I think i need to get the base glued on first though in order to create some form of track to the bottom of the doors. I need to have the inside at least basecoated white before I glue it down though. I think I'd also prefer an mdf base to a ply base to help with the illusion of concrete.

-
I have officially ground to a halt. I want 3mm mdf for the base so I can get on with the painting but every DIY place near me is out of stock. I tried ply but it doesn't give the smooth look of mdf that's great for simulating float finished concrete. I've left it too late for mail order, I just thought I'd walk in and pick some up. #obviously paying for it too). Bugger :-[
-
Will an A4 sheet do you?
I could post it later and it should reach you by Thursday.
:D
-
Thanks mate, but it's too big for A4. I had thought about just using a 2mm plasticard but that would have to be joined too. The annoying thing is I've seen loads of the stuff before but never bought any because I didn't need any at the time (I know, it's not the wargamer's way!) and I thought if I did need any it'd be there.
There's a place near work I can try tomorrow if I can get out.
-
have you thought about hardboard - the shiny side
-
That might be an option. I might try b&q tonight. Since I actually want this as a terrain piece for a new setting I want to make it robust and get it how I want it rather than rush it. Cheers Giles.
-
I think Giles is right mate! I use hardboard as concrete bases and I'm happy with the result...

But then you are a Certified Terrain Genius mate! I assumed that was mdf. Cheers guys.
-
glad to be of service.... :D
-
But then you are a Certified Terrain Genius mate! I assumed that was mdf. Cheers guys.
I use both mate. I find hardboard and MDF to be as good as each other.
-
I finally managed to find some 3mm hardboard yesterday. B&Q once more let me down! I'm not going to be able to finish unfortunately, but I'm going to continue post Build Something!
-
Why not just submit a pic of what you have completed? It's great so far.
-
Thanks Beefcake. I'm fully intending on completing this build so James has kindly moved the thread to the workbench.
-
Keep on plugging away at it, on the home straight now by the sounds of it :)
