Title: Gladiator Arena & Grid
Post by: BigMecha on October 04, 2008, 06:15:39 AM
I am currently working on a Gladiator Arena but have the Gladiator Grid finished for the Arena.

The purpose or reason to have a gladiator grid is to have a bigger area to have more fights outside the arena.
The gladiator grid is also used when the Gladiator Arena is used.

Here is a picture of the Gladiator Ring that is made of Styrofoam.  First I had to cut out all the hexes for the arena so that it could be layed on the Styrofoam and pasted onto the Styrofoam.  Next, the hex pieces were painted with a Brown Sable (by Americana - acrylic) paint and then the spaces between the hexes were painted black.  After that, a Sandy sand (flock) was applied to the hexes.  Since, the Styrofoam was blue in the first place the bottom of it was painted black and the sides.  A friend of mine actually did most of the painting & the rest of the gladiator grid.  I just cut out all the hexes!

(http://i383.photobucket.com/albums/oo273/bigmecha/Gladiator Arena/ring1.jpg)(http://i383.photobucket.com/albums/oo273/bigmecha/Gladiator Arena/ring2.jpg)

I bought a Gladiator Arena from Amazon and it looks like this.  This is how it first looked like-

(http://i383.photobucket.com/albums/oo273/bigmecha/Gladiator Arena/playmobil.jpg)

I first started painting the gladiator arena with black.  It was a Krylon Fusion For Plastic
Textured spray can.  I used nearly 4 cans of the black paint!  It is the 'flat' paint and not the 'glossy' kind.
It took 2 times to make sure the Playmobil was fully sprayed on the inside and the outside.

The next step, was painting the whole Gladiator arena the color Brown Sable (by Americana - Acrylic),
and then the next step was painting the whole gladiator arena the color Country Tan (by Apple Barrel - Acrylic).

You can see the Brown Sable color on the 3rd piece going clockwise of the gladiator arena. Check this out -

(http://i383.photobucket.com/albums/oo273/bigmecha/Gladiator Arena/Arena3.jpg)

As you can see the stands for the arena have been painted but seem to be dry brushed a 'lighter' touch.
I think that is what happened.   The gladiator arena as you can see I have painted Brown Sable and in this picture you should be able to see the Country tan.
And the rest of the arena has Country Tan...
Check it out -

(http://i383.photobucket.com/albums/oo273/bigmecha/Gladiator Arena/Arena4.jpg)

I'm currently working on the front part of the arena where you walk in.
Currently with the Gladiator Arena , I'm painting the 3rd color for the Arena.
It is called Antique White (by Americana-Acrylic).
It makes the Arena look more sandy looking I guess.  Some say it does.
Here is a picture of the Pillars that has the 3rd color applied to it. -

You can find the 40mm Gladiators and animals here that I use with my Gladiator Arena & Grid -

Cool!
Everytime I see this arena in our mall, I'm tempted to buy it! Might do so sometime! May I ask for a comparison shot with a 28mm Miniature?!

Sheerluck:
Checked amazon, the diameter is 84cm, price is around 80 Euro.

Stéphane

Currently I'm using Arena Games.

Here is their link - http://home.rochester.rr.com/ridgerunners/index.html

I have found these rules the best to use!

I also, have Red Sand: Blue Sky, Habet Hoc Habet, Gladiators, Kick Him In the Cataphracts!, and BRUNCH.
I found Red Sand Blue Sky with too many tables and some of it was like wow (the information to follow could be hard to undersand).  With Habet Hoc Habet and I was looking towards using these rules for playing Gladiators, but the rules were too long, and LOTS of tables to use!   In fact, I started to rewrite the rules for Habet Hoc Habet when a friend of mine who did the Gladiator Arena and helped me get started painting my arena showed me Arena Games.  He played it at Historicon 2007.  He said he has so much fun!
As far as the other rules well Kick Him In The Cataphracts and Brunch had only a few pages of rules and wasn't that interesting at all to me to use.

Hope this helps.

p.s I looked at your link and yes that is the same Gladiator Arena I bought.

Hello

When I put it on the gladiator grid and measured it, it says - 33 " (inches).  That is from the front of the entrance to the other side.  Actually it looks like - 33 1/2" (inches)

How much does it cost for one of these Playmobil Gladiator Arenas? well, I got it cheaper at Amazon when they had it on sale.  It goes for $94 at Amazon right now. Here is the link for Playmobil Gladiator Arena at Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/Playmobil-4270-Arena/dp/B000EMFAUO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1223194126&sr=8-1

Hope that helps!

Hello there!

Well I don't have any 28mm miniatures to show you a comparison shot.  A real bummer huh...

But I can show you a picture of what I have to give you an idea of a Playmobil Gladiator in the arena and a 40mm Gladiator.

Here is a picture -

(http://i383.photobucket.com/albums/oo273/bigmecha/Gladiator Arena/DSCI0026.jpg)

the height on the rules says 3 1/2 " (inches), and you can tell the Playmobil gladiator behind the 40mm Elephant.

Sorry, that the picture is a little blurry.

Hope this helps get an idea.  Maybe one of these days I will borrow a 28mm gladiator or 28mm miniature from someone and check that out.

After or nearly a year now of painting my Gladiator Arena...

I'm now finished painting all of my Arena.

Here are some of the latest pictures of my Arena from no Gladiators and animals to alot of Gladiators and animals.
If you remember or recall my Gladiators and animals are used as 40mm.  My gladiators are 40mm.

As you can see the gates are going to get some work to fit better.  I think Playmobile didn't send enough gate extensions for the gates.

It looks really good.  However, it bothers me that portions of it are obviously not done.  These portions include the very top top surface of the upper arches, the top of those square columns, the various small square holes, and a couple other places.  Obviously, unused Playmobil accessories are supposed to fit in there. I think you should try to cover them with plastic card, or maybe tile roofing on the upper arches.  That would "complete" the arena, and allow you to add a splash of red paint for contrast.

Well, there are things that are odd and ends to do.  I just said I was done painting the Arena.

I am going to fill those spots you are talking about one way or another.  If you see the upper arch there are two stands there that are white
and I want to find some figures/miniatures to put there.  Have to be painted yes when I find 2 miniatures to put there.
Want them to be greek gods /goddesses.  So, anybody have any ideas for that feel free to post or email me.
I know 25 to 28mm will fit those stands.  The stand will probably have to be cut or shaved down.

As far as the holes on the arches well there are fire pieces that go there and I don't want that.  Or maybe paint it differently...those fire pieces.

In front of the Arena where the big gate door is I know there are fire pieces that go in there but I'm not sure I want to put that there.

There is a chain that I have that I haven't put in front too, where the big gate is too.

To me this is minor stuff.

When we played Saturday night,  I had alot of people walking by it and checking it out.
I was quite surprised!  I actually got alot of compliments from those who played.
I am happy they like the Arena!  It was alot of work, and I'm thankful it is done cept the small stuff.
That will get done.  I won't show many pictures next time  ....

I'm thinking of using plastic cards and covering those two spots up inside the arena area instead of using the stickers they gave.

BigMecha, do you know if playmobil sell extra spectator seating and can it be added alongside the existing seating?

Chiltern Miniatures make Greek/Roman Gods & Goddesses in 28 mm.

That is great that you bought one and going to paint it up!  I definately would suggest it!

Remember to prime the whole arena and odds and ends in flat black.  Kryon spray I used.  More specifically what I used is on the 1st page.
You need to do your best to get ever corner and little spots you can first.  That is why I had to spray over it again to make sure it was all covered with a "primer".

The last color I used was Snowy White (by Americana - Acrylic) for the pillars and other pieces.

$39 dollars!!!! wow  ...if I can find that one that price I may buy my friend one that amount because he said he might use my arena
when he uses his 25mm gladiators in tournaments.  Not that I don't mind him using my gladiator arena

I had great ideas from the guys I know here that have had more experience painting than myself.
They knew what I wanted to do but what colors to use to give the arena a stoney look they gave me some answers to painting and showing me techniques.

I also, suggest when you start with the 1st color after priming is to make sure you don't use alot
of paint on your brush.  You can always add more paint to those areas that you want or need it than having a glob of paint lobbed in a corner of a piece.
I'm sure you know what I mean.  I'm sure you have been painting longer than I have.

As far as other pieces you can buy from Playmobil I thought I saw it said some place you can get more pieces, but I could be 'wrong'.
Now, I have to check my pieces 'guide' when I get the chance to see if it has information whether I can buy pieces from the company or where to get them.

Thanks for the information about Chiltern Miniatures!!  I will have to check them out.

If you have questions you can always email me or post on the color scheme but I think I gave it all.

Look at the gladiators above in the pictures of took that are on page 2.

You can see those gladiators in the gladiator ring.  You can see how tall they are to the arena's walls or to the gates.

Just how did you make the base?

Hello Wolf

I finally got the instructions from the guy (friend) who made my Gladiator Ring

Here are the instructions (I understand 99%of it) -

1" thick insulation, pick diameter, use tac, string, and sharpie to draw circle.
Use long serrated knife to rough cut foam circle.
Use insulation file to bring it closer to line.
Then use 60 grit sand paper and block to sand edge square and to the line.
Then take electrical tape to cover entire edge.
Decide hex size of board.
Center that hex over the hole that the tac made.
Use a fine point sharpie to trace the hex template.
Move template to new location off the center hex, repeat until board is covered.
Now make hexes out of card stock a 1/8 smaller.(5/8 wide hex make paper hex 1/2)
Make enough to cover the whole board.
Use craft glue and paint brush to glue down each hex in the center of the one traced on the board, so you can see the black lines.  Making the hex out of thick card stock is helpful, and out of a darker color then the flock your going to use will help out later.
After all the hex are glued on the board find something flat to put over it and put something heavy on it until the glue dries.
Then paint the lines between the hexes black make sure you don't leave and foam showing.
Do three coats.
Then mix the flock you want to use.
Decide on base color to paint something similar to the flock but darker.
Paint a few hexes NOT the black lines and sprinkle the flock over it.
Shake off excess flock and repeat on remaining hexes.
Let dry over night
Inspect to make sure that no areas of foam are showing.
Paint with either color to cover up any foam.
If you dont when you seal it the foam will melt and destroy the area that is not covered in paint.
Lightly seal, inspect for damage, if none seal again.

Hope you understand.  This is exactly what I received from him.

Well, mine finally arrived and I discovered that I had bought an item that constitutes about 1/3 or 1/4 of the one that Big Mecha made up. Playmobil make 2 versions, 4270 is a full arena, 5837 is a portion which consists of the main gate, cages, podium and 2 wall sections together with the Playmobil figures and chariot. I will dispose of the figures and chariot but keep the rest.

Sorry to hear that Poiter!!!  Yes, I have the Playmobil 4270.  It has all the pieces.  I have looked on the sheet with all the pieces and it doesn't say
whether or not you can order more pieces.  I don't see why not though.

If you find out you can ...let me know.

By the way.... I bought a Playmobil 5837.  It isn't for me.  I want to give it to that friend to do for his Arena or give it out as a prize.

I didn't know Playmobil came out with another model!  I thought I was also buying another one like I bought before!  But I guess that is alright...
since I'm 'done' with mine except minor details.

I actually have half my corridor filled with those things... I mananaged to find a carton box though, that can also (barely) contain the Arena (disassambled). In a few years I'll remember where I stored it and will start painting ;D

Damn you, now there is pressure to paint the thing.

But it will still have towait untill we are going to play some gladiatorial games. It's just to big to use as a scenery piece, so would actually be a bit a waste of time to paint it right away.

Prof, if you really want one you could check marktplaats.nl (it is a Dutch version of Ebay). There are quite a few arena's for sale. With a bit of luck you could pick one up for around 30 Euro's. And Germany is just around the corner  lol

Thanks for the link but I don't think I'm going to pick it up, it's just too big for my taste.

Boy did I really blow it. The local Ross discount store had a couple of them for sale last Christmas for about $40 US. I should have picked at least one when I first saw them. The were gone when I went back a couple of days later.

Bought the little one. Now I just need to see how many wall sections I need to get the full sized arena duplicated, and if there are any other pieces necessary. Any ideas?

It certainly looks useful, but I can see quite a few aspects that I'd be tempted to change.

For example, it would need seating for the audience, which would be either inside or outside of the ring wall, requiring that the other wall be built somehow.

Also, the main entrance looks rather large for 1:56 scale.

Any idea as to what type of plastic it is made of?

The plastic is a hard plastic ala Airfix/Matchbox kits.

Threadomancy! Sorry!

Just wanted everyone to know that Playmobil USA has the full Arena back in stock. $69.99 w/ free shipping.

Needless to say, I just bought the big bastard. Now I need to sell the little set! ::)

Anyone interested? $35 plus shipping and you too can be a lanista!

Might have been tempted if you were this side of the pond but postage will probably kill things faster than a retiarius with a laser trident.

Habet! Hoc! Habet!

Sorry for pushing this old thread but I have to admit that this arena is a really gem. I already thought about buying this arena but discarded it over the actually price. But if I see BigMecha's wonderful work on here I need to think about it again.  lol

I picked up one of these from an LA member here...however I've since changed my mind (simply too big - it measures 33" across!).  Now that I think BOTS will be my staple rules-set, I'll be going much smaller.

It is a nice big quality kit - typical Playmobil quality. Lovely stuff.  Oh what plans I had... :? lol

Looks a perfect size - large enough to allow figures to be moved easily.....

I also have a Playmobil arena but as I intend to use it for 54mm figures I think it is the perfect size.

When I was debating going all out, i was planning on having my buddy cut me out several large MDF crowd stands to place around the perimeter...I think it would really flush out the project (though make it tiny bit harder to access).  I think for places like conventions the big grand arena would be really cool...definitely get attention.  I even thought of vendors outside, and I was going to put some of the graffiti on the outside walls (if you read all of the gladiator books they tend to show images which are listed as "image from the wall of the _____ ampitheatre/arena".  So I think graffiti was pretty common, and the images look quite easy to replicate with a paintbrush.

I had also planned to remove the top section (the six posts) and actually move it in front of the main entrance way, adding an awning -- I think it would increase the look of the grand entrance to the coliseum.

Add some post and fabric awnings to cover the richer audience members and you have a nice gig.  Dammit...now I'm thinking about using my friggin' arena.. lol

PS: Playmobil Gladiator minis/chariots seem to go for a reasonable chunk of change on ebay, so anyone on the fence could likely recoup $30-35 or more on ebay just with the minis sold off separately (they're out of print in several markets and ebay is awash with crazy Playmobil collectors).
