Hi Folks
Started the latest Shed Wars project this weekend - the construction of a modular Tomb to go under my pyramid and Egyptian temple...
Started with this

and the first room looks like this...

Still very much work in progress but you can follow it here

This is genius! I've been looking for a way to build some sort of dungeon that I could afford for quite a while now, and this looks like a very cool solution.
You could even store things inside of it, when its packed away. Good stuff.
-
That's an excellent idea Giles! Now start again so that your wall stones line up at the corners ;)
-
Excellent work. Looking forward to seeing how you progress.

They are not glued in at the moment... ;)
Dean you can take some credit for this as it was your adobe buildings from the Ikea drawers that set me off on this path..

now, that is avery cool idea. But aren't You afraid to scratch away layers of colour each time pulling and pushing the drawers?
I've seen a similar idea somewhere. Some sort of babushka-style terrain. Each fit in another piece, so storaging away 9 pieces require room for three in the end.
I will follow that project. ;)

The rooms and corridors will be stored in the frame box. I'll eventually varnish the outside of the boxes so the paint won't rub off.
Now that I know the concept has legs I'll lay out the first tomb and drawn in all the features for cutting. I should have sufficient with three draw units to build a reasonable sized tomb. Once these are complete I can always add more.

They're very useful boxes :)
Is the flooring a printout? Looks like hirst arts floor pieces but not deep enough.

3mm Foam core with the paper removed and then etched with a biro

Excellent work then!

Nice one, Giles.
It works well.

I planned something similar after seeing Dewbakuk's build but could not find the damn things.
>:(
Whereabouts are they in IKEA?
My Master Criminal needs a hideaway.

They are in the Storage area...all the boxes, craters etc. Look for Moppe - £18.00 per set

Cheers!
:D
I had a couple of them some years ago, in fact my paints are still in two of the large drawers, and could not remember what they were called.

Nice work Giles! 8)
For the corridor sections, would you not be better leaving the inserts loose? That way you can have a duel use for each box. As a corridor or a room?

Ummmm..had not thought about that - good idea will consider thank you

Plenty of good ideas appearing from these suggestions.

Good thing I have only built one unit... ;)

How about cutting each box in half, thus doubling your floor space and resolving the "walls too high" issue.
Would just need to add a floor to each new upper half. Flip the upper half over, use those factory finished edges as the bottom edge, so that if your cuts are not dead on straight, doesn't matter.
-
Very cool. I have been mulling over how to do this myself as I have lots of Egyptian interior items painted and ready to place inside a tomb...just need the tomb. Looking forward to your continued progress. Thanks for sharing.

Simple, but very clever (as usual, giles). Great, I bought several wooden boxes from IKEA some years ago, but never startet to do it. You showed me how simple it is. Super idea! And you can expand it very simple. ;)

OK - its taken a couple of months part part 2 of my modular tomb build is complete...
lots more piccies on the blog

Great idea!
I wonder if there's a way to bring the carcass of the drawer set into play too? I'm thinking it could be laid flat on it back, maybe cut severral arches/columns into the surfaces the drawers sit on, so you'd have a large area with a courtyard feel? You'd be able to put flagstones on the floors (the drawers would stick out a few mm when stored, no big deal, but the other surfaes could only be painted, but it might look good.
Just an idea.

Don't spoil the surprise... :D
Yes the Carcass will become a room - just need more foam to line it with...

Sorry for reviving this old topic!
I just wanted to add that these builds are actually VERY close to certain ancient Egyptian artifacts. There was a tradition to place models of houses and all sorts of buildings in tombs. These particular examples from the tomb of Meketre (Middle Kingdom era) were built inside boxes.

Those are excellent. I have recently started an Egyptian themed dungeony tomby type of thing. But this is heaps better than mine.
Great idea well executed.
-
Very creative use of the drawer set. I have one of those, too. Might be an idea to make use of it.
-
Excellent idea!
