I've played this ever since it came out and dabble every now and then :)
It's time to dabble again :D
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Man%20O%20War/DA3FA729-A894-4E30-A1C4-A7E573228A98_zpsrfvwq9ge.jpg)
Just the one teaser image for now, I'll finish re-planting the rest of the islands and post them up with the fleets that I've got so far.
cheers
James

Amazing ! That's just beautifull !
-
Stunning island!
I love Man O War. Have plans to dig it out again and repaint my ships so ill follow this with interest!
-
Nicey - those palms are brilliant! 8) 8) 8) 8)

The fortified tropical isle is a BEAUTIFUL creation. VERY WELL DONE!
-
10mm??
;)
-
Thanks for the replies chaps :)
10mm??
;)
No idea but apparently it's supposed to be 1:1200 but I doubt it's that accurate. The clear base is 50m x 25mm if that helps to size it.
The 'corsairs' are scratch built as they go for silly money on ebay.

I've had a rather heavy week at work and it was nice to go through the man o war box I've got and get a few bits out. I have run out of trees and palms now so I'll have to order plenty more :)
cheers
James

Very cool, always liked this game...was hoping Dreadfleet would have been a re-launch of it, but nooo.
-
Fantastic! More pictures please.
I've been meaning to get my Man o' War stuff out and repaint it.

Do they? Interesting!
-
Beautiful islands, and I wouldn't have noticed the corsairs were scratch built if you hadn't mentioned it. Nice modeling & painting!
MoW was always a favorite game of mine (though a little bit of a hassle to manage all of those cards.) I havent olayed in many years, but have the game & ships stored away in the hope of returning to it someday.
-
My god those islands are cute.
-
These look brilliant.
Me and friend are looking at dabbling in this and I have to admit I am inspired :D
-
Oh, Bretonnian corsairs! This makes me feel all nostalgic. I've still got Man-O-war minis somewhere, I might dig them out.
Nice island and scratch builds btw
-
Nice!! but I must admit I imagine Thunderbird 2 flying over that island ;D
-
Goddammit Jim! Stop being awesome at everything! lol
-
Such a lovely (though now somewhat dated) game, that doesn't get the love and attention it deserves.
I caught on too late and am still looking for the last few bits to complete my fleets (without getting fleeced on eBay)...
Please, dabble on!
-
Those islands do look rather lovely, sir.
:-* :-* :-*
Although....
Nice!! but I must admit I imagine Thunderbird 2 flying over that island ;D
lol lol lol
ThunderBibbles Are Go!
:D
-
Fabulous! :-* Where do you get the trees and palms from?
-
Thanks again chaps, apart form Paul, you know the rest lol
Where do you get the trees and palms from?
Here (https://www.themodeltreeshop.co.uk/) Quite cheap and the smaller ones certainly do the job. The larger ones; 70-80mm +, are a little lacking but still perfectly useable.
cheers
James

That island fortress is seriously nice!
-
Slick work. We played a lot of this in the day but my copy hasn't been out the box for over 15 years! I was going to flog it but I've no idea what it's worth.
-
Fantastic :) where did you get those forts
-
I was going to flog it but I've no idea what it's worth.
About £60-80 on ebay, the two boxed supplements go for a lot more. Decent nick obviously.

Scratch built. A lasered profile with the top walls and cannons stuck on. It needs some barracks in the middle really though.
cheers

Thanks, James. But these are not the etched brass ones, are they? That certainly would be a hell of a lot of work ...
-
They are etched brass and the smallest ones are about 6mm tall.
The palms are a pin with etch foliage, sprayed separately I think and then stuck together.
I believe they are made in China but I could be wrong.
cheers
James
-
Great job, James! :o
I too would like to get some of those tiny palms for my Caribbean game, can you specify which item they are on that site please? I can't seem to find ones that fit the bill? What scale/size are they listed as?
-

Cheers. Mines still boxed and in good nick. Maybe I should think about it.

Cheers Jim,
Looking on the site the "cheaper one" looks like it's this one:
https://www.themodeltreeshop.co.uk/canary-island-date-palm-click-picture-to-see-prices-and-options.html
However, it's 1 pound each, and apparently it's 5 CM tall... what did i do wrong?
Cheers
Jack
-
Very nice. Will you be putting anything inside the hill fortress such as small buildings?
-
Lovely, very good stuff indeed:D

Those date palms come in 30 to 32 mm, but they don't look like the one James would have used... but then again at that size, it's hard to say? Could the smaller ones be out of stock?
-
Click on the picture to be taken to another page with a drop down menu for the different sizes they do.
I think they are cheap at around a pound each but other people may not think so...
cheers
James
-
Ok, so the closest I see is the 'date palm' - it's 1:1500, height 30mm, spread 5? And these cost 1 pound each?
So you must have invested at least 25 to 30 pounds on that tiny rocky island alone? :o
Or am I missing something?
-
No, fortunately they were left over from a recent job at work and I was allowed to bring them home but I will be spending a considerable amount on trees if the project continues.
Each to their own ;)
cheers
James

What about cutting your own palm tops out of thin card and mounting them on pins?
-
Those wee islands are great, mate! :-*
I've still got a box with the Dark Elf fleet somewhere. Only one floaty dragon thingy painted. I remember the Black Ark being really cool, with a big skull as a bow.
-
Yeah. Dark elf fleet was really cool. I loved the TV show, Pirates of dark water (pity it got cancelled before finishing) the dark elf skull boat looked just like a boat from that.
-

Life's too short ;) This is only supposed to be a small diversion rather than a full blown project and it was the fact that the palms were available that gave me the decision to do it in the first place :)

Checked Aliexpress with search term 1:1000 palm tree, and got huge amounts of various size palms. For example, you can get such 1:1000 palms for 0.36 USD per palm which works out something like 25 pence in UK money, I think? Although I am not sure if the fronds are plastic or etched? Looked like plastic to me?
Plus postage of course, but then I assume postage is not included in the linked items either? But it works out something like 4 trees for a pound, which sounds a little better to me?
I think you might get better deals with other dealers, maybe buy bigger quantities, or get free postage, which some seem to offer? I've only ordered once from China, that time it was some sticks for my Playstation controllers, but that time it worked nicely. Anyone else ever order from Aliexpress? Might be tempted to order some larger palms too.
-
Brilliant, can't wait to give it a try, never played it first time around. :)
-
Have you tried cutting tiny palm trees out of blue foam yet?
:D
-
Time to drag another thread from the depths ::) :D
I played the game round at Sixmillitoe's last night (game report in his thread later) and it got me in the mood to carry on with mine.
I've had this larger island in a state of near completion for a while but now it's done :) I think the buildings are a little bit too small but I'm not that bothered really as Man 'O' War is fairly none-scale.

And here are all the islands I have so far. Got a few more on the go.

Here are the fleets I've got on the go at the moment, Empire and Brettonian. Stilla fair amount to do on the Empire ships. The largest Empire ship is a scratchbuild and is called an Emperor ship and is only used in direst need (four cannon broadsides, three to the front and two to the rear). There's also a 'hulk' ship that is used more of a transport ship.

Great stuff :)
Where are the palm trees from?
-
That's quite a bit nice!
And I see you finally painted your wizards' tower... ;) Shrunk a bit though.
How did you end up doing the palm trees?
-
Thanks chaps :)

Never tried the game
The islands are amazing :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
It's very simple and yet can be good fun :)
cheers
James
-
Glad the game got you back in the mood for it! :)
I think the scale of the new buildings are bang.
Didn't realise how far along your fleets were too! Great work Jim. 8)
-
Lovely work, mate.
:-* :-*
Islands at such a small scale are great fun to make, are they not?
I know that I really enjoyed making mine when we used to play Uncharted Seas.
-
Tis is first class Ace-hobbying that makes me want to get my Trafalgar stuff out of the box and start building islands immediately!
-
Cheers gents :)
Yes, the islands are great fun to make. It's going to be difficult not too make too many for the board lol
cheers
James
-
Wow! This is really taking it to the next level 8)
-
Fantastic...while I understand the ocean-going aspect of naval wargaming, I love a good set of islands - even if just placed off to the side.
-
Very nice work. Now I need to dig out my Uncharted Seas stuff and get some more painted up.
Too many projects, not enough me to go around.
