Was bound to happen someday, have been collecting bits and pieces for it over the years but always held back "cause no one games it here". Realised that is a bit pointless as I'm a builder and painter first and if I can actually play a game with them, well, all the better, but not neccesary. Decided to move away from my 20mm Stalker stuff for now and head over into the 28mm TNT direction.
My 40K bikes will be Wasteland trash. Opened the filler caps on 3 of the 4. Bit bug but works

I think they need a bit more, but not sure what. Anyone?
Also, as I saw mentioned that Cars cars in 1/54 seem to work, I picked up 2 of them.
Anyone know how to remove those faces other then grinding them off? Size wise these are great.
I'll clean em, sand them and base them up to get painted soon. Als picked up a rather large toy to use as a scenic piece but I will do some work on that before I show it. Lot's of work.
-
I go for the zvezda Doc Hudson model myself, snap-fit plastic that can be shaped up with a dremel.
Good job getting the BCB securitron, seems like that guy might be hard to come by soon..
Nice arch sissy bar on the bike. Wish those plastic biker sprues would come out already so I can fill my ranks out with them.
Nice job so far. Always gutting to see models coming together without the promise of games to take part in (like most of my collection!) but it looks like you enjoy what you do. c:
On the bikes, I would personally strip down the plate across the back. Completely remove the mudguard from pipe to pipe and build in a simple, smaller one with some plastic strip or pipe cut in half. Maybe take the consoles off of the front and throw some more traditional bits together. Make them all different too ;)
-
Great start! I'd say the bikes could use a bit of stowage on the back, but (going along with your open filler caps) you could green stuff them to be emptied bags; as if they'd been rummaged through already, just be hanging off the back.
-
Great start. :)
I have a few GW bikes in the works for F3 motorbikes too.
Regarding the smiley faces, dremel back a bit, and millyputty in the recess. I generally build up the bumper a little.
Cheers
Matt

That is so cool! If my boys ever get tired of playing with their VAST collection of Cars toys, I know what will happen to them! Hahaha!!!

I think they need a bit more, but not sure what. Anyone?

:o Good call!
-
Nice saw them on the PA Forums great start.

Thx for the hint Michi, I saw some lovely stuff! :D
Well, not happy with the first 2 cars right now, due to the damage and the busted axles and the fact I overpaid for them (with my very limited funds overpaying is a big no-no). Having said that, I'll snip off the wheels anyway and base them, plus I'll do some heavy sanding around the chips and cracked paint (I'm not going to strip them, just sand for extra grip and basecoat again). Also, now that I know where to look I'm finding the correct Cars cars for 2 euros a pop on the second hand market. Jay. Better sell some more stuff fast.
Also, thx to a friend with a colour laser printer I got a few sheets of these:
(http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag363/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/Projects/Blog/003_zpsw59ozouj.jpg) (http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/media/Projects/Blog/003_zpsw59ozouj.jpg.html)
Which will do for scenery and paper trash on the floor. I have another buddy with a colour laser printer print me a sheet of Fallout magazines (courtsey of a link I found I one of you guys topics) and some more billboards, and as soon as I have those I will spend some time measuring up billboards to fit them. And try out that weathering tutorial for laserprinted stuff.

Great and innovative idea to use the Disney cars!

Care to share? pretty please o_o

Won't do you any good mate, it's on Marktplaats, a eBay clone without all the eBay bullcrap but without proper buyer protection, Dutch speaking only and most will not ship outside the Netherlands. I'm guessing they are so cheap now as this weekend is Sinterklaas and people are trying to dump their unwanted toys asap, seeing as most Cars are from 2006-2009 and their kids by now have tired from them.
It's not like I have any choice in the matter, if I want period feel cars I can buy US Oldtimers at 10 pounds a pop plus shipping from abroad, or these Cars cars for 2 euro a piece and having them stuffed in a local envelope. Bit of a no brainer with my small and limited budget. They are not perfect but I think I can make them work.

This is the last pic you will see from me in a while. I had a run in with a Prius on friday and I'm a bit beat up. I can't use a mouse for more then a minute, let alone hold a brush or a knife so I'm taking a few days (or more) of sick leave. Finished the first set of junk (detailed pics later)

Here's to a speedy recovery....
Lovely work on those rubble pieces.
-
Looks great, and yet again I am sorry to hear of your accident. I hope you make a speedy recovery
-
Damn. Here's to a speedy recovery.
Great rubble, could be used in a "used future" type scifi game as well.
-
I was rear ended just about two months back, really threw out my back and my painting efforts....still feel like I am catching up and it is hard to motivate yourself back into the painting swing. Best wishes on the healing! Love the work!

get well soon.

Actually marktplaats has been ebay owned for a number of years, but any attempts at introducing the more structured ebay style buyer protection have always been met with strong and vocal resistance. (we don't like chance I guess)

Looks great! i love the Billboards, the weathering on the cars is excellent too. Really good round up!
-
Dat weathering.
-
Wow, if the Cars I picked up turn out that well, I'll be happy. Nice job! :)
-
Wow, I was skeptical about picking up some of those Disney Cars - but man, you make them look excellent! Really impressed with the weathering and the billboards as well. Love the weathered newspaper everywhere. Consider it stolen!

Eyecandy !
Love the weathered newspaper everywhere.

Nice job on the cars. I really like the weathered wood effect on the billboard. Is that a drybrushed grey finish?

Elk and Hupp, it is black basecoat, a whitegrey drybrush and then a brown wash, some places heavy, other places light. Really simple, nothing shocking, made for speed.
-
There you go mate, the Disney Cars work a treat don't they! Very inspired covering Maters huge chompers with groundwork and papers, I have resisted that car due to the excessive mouth, but your conversion works well.
Cool billboards too! 8) 8) 8)

Speedpainting/weathering this weekend in between family duties. Should be finished by tomorrow evening.

Strong work on what you have done so far! :-* Marx makes a set of future cars that work nice for Fallout. I think there are some people who have used them and posted photographs here of them. You can find them on ebay and they are not too expensive.
Hope you are feeling better after your accident!

Awesome stuff.
Looks like a blast to make.
Those Cars cars really do the trick.
-
Thx Darkoath, but the last time I saw the Marx cars for sale people were asking 15 dollars a piece for them! ;D That's why I went for the 2 euro Cars cars instead.....
Well, hopefully this is more impressive
This fridayevening 18:00 18-12-2015, just arrived by mail.

Not a bad paintjob. Pity about the decals being badly applied. So, black basecoat, Olive Drab PSC spray, full speed weathering a must-be done-in-a-single-weekend deadline. Net result is this:

Intended for Fallout, but hey, Rogue Trader, Inquisimunda, you name it, it works.
-
Excellent work!
I've got that downed plane in a box. Wasn't sure how I'd paint it. Now I'm considering going copycat :D
-
Well, it works quite well I think, so feel free to copy as much as you want :)
-
That is really cool. c:
-
Dang, that's a perfect use of that 40k terrain, and painted to fit the part of some weird USAAF experimental fighter or something. I'm gonna see if I can find one on the cheap at some point.

I've been looking at what I can do at my current skill level with a minimum of funds and my limited mobility. I narrowed it down to a few scenes, and I'm starting with a Drive In movie theatre. First up is the movie screen itself. Due to storage limits, it is limited to a 14x20m screen, on a minimal but sturdy base. Framework is again from sateh sticks and coffee stirrers, with a plasticcard board. I folded the paper for the projection screen several times and then dunked it in coffee twice to bring out the lines. Then some weathering with grey inks, nothing more.

I then took some time to make a scaffold at the back with a little shack, and a very dodgy ladder that will never pass any Health & Safety inspection.

Now, over at the Guild, there is a Winter themed speed build going on till the 6th of January. It took me some brainstorming to fit Winter into the Fallout setting. In the end I settled for a Snowglobe. At this point, I should have googles Snowglobe+Fallout, but I didn't, so I went with the based sphere kind I knew from my childhood.

It is meant to be Vault Boy, complete with 111 on his chest, in between 2 pine trees, painted in one go (unlike the ball itself which took 5 tries, 4 of them ending up somewhere in my room after being violently displaced when I slipped my fingers....) with my smallest brush. Sorry, I was not able to paint snowflakes.
And yes, it does look a lot like a Pokeball!
-
Ooooh man. Oh man oh man oh man oh man. That shack idea is killer. Very jealous I didn't think of it. lol :D
-
Vault Boy, I choose you!
:D
I love the screen, but you have got to get paint on that Orc Pilot! Kromlech does some great stuff, don't they?
-
Lots of great inspirational pieces here! And I love them all so far :) :-*
Keep them coming!
-
Vault Boy, I choose you!
That was the first that sprung to my mind too.
It must be true then that great minds think alike ;D
That screen is mighty fine but the shack makes it a winner.
BTW : wouldn't it be preferable to shoot a hole through the screen so one could observe whats happening in front of it while hiding in the shack?
-
Awesome stuff!
-
AAargh, I gotta come up with an excuse to have to make postapocalypse terrain like this.
It's so cool looking and looks like so much fun to make....
-
Zis, the paper is torn and folded away in front of the shack. Maybe there is a hole..... ;) (and a figure can actually stand on the shack and look over the top of the board. Room enough.)
Sinew, I've never painted an Ork/Orc so I'm a bit anxious to try one. Got any good tutorials on their skin?
Thx guys. Bit stuck right now on the projector booth and the food stall....hadn't realised they tend to be 2 story structures in one. The bit that I need for the speakers is still elusve but I'm sure my bag of Space Marine Vehicle bits will yield the correct item I think, and then I just need to cast 40 or so. Currently sketching out the line up for the display and what movies to go on... still looking for a few good Atomic Horror titles ;D

The Board is awesome Gunbird! Glad to see your new love to coffee make such great results^^
I´m really impressed every time about your many little details you bring in your terrain. I hope I will achive this level in my vault some time.

I second Deltadog's comments! All those little details are really lovely and make your pieces stand out!

Work is slowed down to a trickle while my antiobiotics have kicked in (I have the worst of luck these days).

Looks like DELTADOG will be getting some of my money... ::) lol
-
Sorry to hear that you're not feeling well, Gunbird, and I hope you get better soon.
Like everyone else, I have to say that the drive-in screen looks amazing, and the little hut at the back gives it cool playability to go with its total thematic fit. Your billboards look terrific to. Definitely have to steal that idea. And those Cars toys look amazing, especially the second one with the fins. Perfect Fallout model.

Thx guys, I'm hanging in there. Only managed to finish the varnish and basing of these today and tried to start some more and bigger wreckage. Also have a offer to make a deal for 8 Marx cars for 10 euros that Kim said I can do so I will add those to my painting list soon. Deltadogs stuff has priority but I want to do it right and I'm really not clearheaded right now.
It's a pity it ain't a tricyle, but what can you do (other then convert one). Looks sad enough as it is.

Letterboxes and kids bicycle by Black Cat Bases. The bike is exteremely roughly cast, with extra metal bits everywhere from mould wear, mould slippage and plain bits missing. No pedals even. The letterboxes have caved in sides from when the metal cooled but that actually helps with the beat up look! Did my best to make it....interesting!

:o where did you find a deal that good?? Wow. Glad to hear you are keeping your head up on the health front. :)

Well, I post on the Dutch Wargamers FB group cause I might demo the game at a event in 2017 (IF I can keep my focus) and a chap mentioned the Marx cars as being great for me. When I countered that with the high cost per car on Ebay (and on this forum - 15 dollars per car!) and me having a monthly budget of 25 euros he said he had bought 80 of them for 150$ years ago and could spare me 8 for a tenner. Can't say not to that, cause that plus the Cars cars I'm working on should be enough for my max sized board (won't go bigger then 122 square for this, 90 square preferred)

:o Holy crap, 80 of those suckers! That's crazy.

:o Holy crap, 80 of those suckers! That's crazy.
My thoughts exactly. Sadly, the wife vetoed the purchase, saying I can buy them when I the kids leave the house. That will be about 18 years from now :( So back to scrapping Cars cars it is....

New year, new ideas, trying out new things.

1 evening and 1 afternoons worth of time, 4,5 sheets of A4 foamboard, about 50 toothpicks and a handfull of coffee stirrers, and a small strip of blue foam with plenty of woodglue and some scrap cereal box. I know sort of know what can be done and can't be done, what to look at when planning something big like this and how I have to make the open areas, though the right side first floor is harder to reach then I had planned, I'll find a way to paint it. This is also the max size my cupboard can hold (base was 1 A4 sheet of plasticcard, cut down to fit snugly around the base.
Next step is to use thinned down wall filler and cover all of the exposed foam, cut out 3 cardboard doors to stick in the openings, fill the corners with bigger stones and debris, give everything another coating with thinned down wall filler and sand/rubble the base.
The template I made was a godsent and thanks to it the rest of the large buildings will fit with eachother to create 1 long or closed structure.....or it should be by the time I'm done with it!
Now to review the tutorial about using the thinned down wallfiller......
-
Wow, seriously impressive! Anytime I attempt foam board construction I am left underwhelmed. Might inspire me to pick up the hobby knife and try again...
-
Hell Yeah thats nice!
Please take some extra time, go back to your Coffeestirrers and add some texture to the boring flat Cerealbox Doorblockers :-) PLEASE :D
-
Damn, son, that is a beaut!
-
Please stop being so creative.
You're making a lot of us look bad :P
...
Nah, keep 'em coming. Way too awesome not to share this with us. 8)
BTW : would be nice if you could specify on your do's and dont's. Spare us from finding out ourselves should we ever start up such a project.
-
Wow, that looks great! Job well done. :) Will you be posting the template you used?
-
Sweet!
-
Great work! Will be grand to see rest of the buildings as well :)
-
Not to many do's and don't.
Do use a cutting mat. Not only does it prevent from ruining your table, the lines help with lining up your cuts.
Do use a metal rules. Don't use plastic ones. Your knife will slip and jump across your fingers. Been there, done that.
Do start with a fresh scalpel or knife blade. I've done 99% of the cuts with it, and the 1% where I used a old blade the foam ripped
Do plan ahead, even with a basic drawing. You can change to taste while building anyway, no need to make a full architects drawing!
Do pin stuff while drying. Don't worry about the holes, they are easily filled later.
Do plan your cuts (at least at the start). I picked up 60 sheets in one go from a online dumpstore so I'm set for a while at rockbottom prices, but I put all of my offcuts in a box to keep for later. Now, at the rubble stage, I can cut those apart to make rubbleheaps from that can be covered with debris and filler, wasting less.
Do a test first with something simple. Not my kind of simple. lol
Don't worry about little gaps and stuff not meeting up correct. Filler will cover any sin. When in doubt, glue a sheet of paper over a part where many joins akwardly looking and use filler over that.
Don't fret when it does not work like you want to. You are learning a new skill. Rome wasn't built in a day. Learn from your mistakes.
Foamboardbuilding is a simple and inexpensive hobby and creates sturdy and durable scenery for a very low cost. And since time is what I have enough, and money not enough by a mile, that suits me just fine.
And above all, just have fun. During the past few days I've walked away several times when I could not solve a small problem with the building and had to think it over. Heck, I even had a long chat with my wife and she was the one who suggested to change the left side into what you see now to make it more symmetrical and to give a jump off point for a walkway, as well as another door to spawn ghouls from.
Last nights filler seems to have dried nicely, so let's see how far I will get today. I'll try and grab a pic of the template when I go downstairs. It's a really simple thing like the one I use for my 20mm stuff.
-
Very much the rules I follow except the pinning, but that's probably because I use a rabbet cutter to cover the joints with excess card.
-
Well, I do remove the pins after it has dried, just woodglue plus the fact I like to make things box shaped makes it strong enough I think.
-
Feck me, I have not held my concentration like this in a long while. This is a good thing.
I've stuccoed the ruin all over(well, except the ceilings I just noticed) and started rubbling them up a bit.

Problem is that I ran out of rubble almost straight after I started. I only have a kilogram box of normal basing sand with some coarser elements, but nothing like big grain and small chunks of rock. A quick check of the online stores pulled up tabs around 15 euros including shiping for just a single bag of stuff, and at the second hand Marktplaats they still charged me 6 euros for small rough gravel, 100 grams, shipping included. Well, that dog don't hunt, so I set the building aside.
I had to report at work this morning, to discuss getting back in the saddle (starting again on monday, 4 hours a day - funny thing, my boss is on crutches cause he broke his leg 4 weeks ago....and he is coming to work every day) and after that I decided to park up in the city to have my walking excercise there. I ran into a discount shop full of, well, crap, but in the back was a big table with discounted stuff and Buy 2 get 1 free. And what do I spy with my spectacled eye?
(http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag363/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/Projects/Blog/007_zps8syktcm5.jpg) (http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/media/Projects/Blog/007_zps8syktcm5.jpg.html)
My wife tells me they use this for adding to potted plants and candles to make it look rustic...something? Whatever, I just bagged 3 pots for a total of 1 kilo of grit and coarse bits of ghastly coloured rock. I'll paint them over anyway so who cares. Grand total, 1,70 euro. Happy camper, problem solved.
A few weeks ago I put out a request to the kit trading post for surplus 1:35 scale ammo cans, and found the replies to be most unhelpful ("Go buy aftermarket resin stuff" was the main comment) but 1 chap offered me 2 sets of 1:35 Italeri Modern Battle Gear for a tenner or a 2 engined bomber. Well, better then nothing I thought. So I got two sets of these:
(http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag363/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/Projects/Blog/011_zpsfofkzx4m.jpg) (http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/media/Projects/Blog/011_zpsfofkzx4m.jpg.html)
Next to 8 useful ammo cans, there are also a load of boxes and cans of various types, and 1 oild can, on its side and with a circle added in the middle is a dead ringer for a Fallout safe so yes, very happy with these. The 1:35 tank shells I'll try and trade to a 40K IG player. The gas canisters are nice too.
(http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag363/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/Projects/Blog/012_zpsqljxcu6g.jpg) (http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/media/Projects/Blog/012_zpsqljxcu6g.jpg.html)
While making a feeble attempt to clear my desk (failed that) I found my mines again, so I glued tose to my painting sticks and basecoated them.
(http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag363/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/Projects/Blog/010_zpscsopgl6j.jpg) (http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/media/Projects/Blog/010_zpscsopgl6j.jpg.html)
Also made some more progress on some Cars cars.
(http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag363/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/Projects/Blog/009_zpspsvpvmzb.jpg) (http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/media/Projects/Blog/009_zpspsvpvmzb.jpg.html)
Final highlight of the week was trading these online for some Cars cars that I had spare.
(http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag363/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/Projects/Blog/015_zpsxgfs9j4z.jpg) (http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/media/Projects/Blog/015_zpsxgfs9j4z.jpg.html)
I just need 1, so 2 of them I'll offer up for trade. Not sure if I wil do that before or after giving them new Nuka Cola labels. They are about 8 cm's tall and will work perfectly standing in front of a building I think. They are actually glass and 2 of them contain liquid!
That's it for today, I'm off to fysio for some knee work.
-
Nice progress! That italieri Battle supplement is on my wishlist as well. Especially the Roadinforcement Metalplates are extremly cool!
Hope to see the sentries in paint soo as well. Can´t wait to see them painted, but have no time to paint mine atm. :-[
-
Building looks really Ace!
-
Don't worry Delta, your sentries are next on the list to be cleaned and reviewd, and bit lower on the list to be painted. This test scenic piece is draining me right now.

Finished doing all of the rubble, when it has dried tomorrow I'll go over with thinned down filler (almost a wash) to tie it all in and then she is ready for primer I think. Can't decide whether to add extra 0.2mm plastic floorplates on the open areas or just cover it with thinned down filler and be done with it. Choices, choices.
-
Go for the Floorplates! Its really a great Building no need to rush over the fine details in the end !
-
Loose tiles ok too? Easier to just do a few of them here and there (and to blend in with the rubble). Did a try out with some cardboard 1x1 metre (in scale) floorplates and it just did not work, I think.
-
I'd say floortiles. Large floorplates are more a thing for industrial sites, unless they are marble slabs in a high-end office (and then often only the lobby), which are a nuisance to paint convincingly. Tiles mean this may have been a hospital, rental appartment, school or office. Just more flexible that way.
-
Then I'm lucky and unlucky in one go. I've got some Evergreen tile sheets, 1/12th inch, 1/8th inch and half a sheet of 1/3rd inch, the last one being perfect for my needs. But I bought those almost 10 years ago and the price sticker is no longer compatible with current prices (or funds). lol Well, there are 355 tiles left on the sheet I have. If I use these selectively for just the groundfloor sections I should be able to have enough for all 4 ruins in the set. Top floors, other then the bathroom section, will have to do with heavy paper cut and sanded to look like worn linoleum, or just stick to mostly bare concrete.
-
Concentrate on a stylish, tiled foyer?
-
I presume most of the linoleum flooring would have been scavenged and burned in these wasteland conditions? So bare concrete flooring fits the bill ok me thinks. :)
-
Maybe on 1 - 2 Spots some carpet floor remainings?
-
The build is looking beautiful so for dude.
I think patches of floor tiles remaining would work, with the plain concrete painted up with those glue marks you get when you remove floor tiles.
-
So, how about this then?
(http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag363/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/Projects/Test%20ruin%2028mm/002_zpsfrxtggoq.jpg) (http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/media/Projects/Test%20ruin%2028mm/002_zpsfrxtggoq.jpg.html)
Have 2 loose tiles left that I'll place somewhere. Next time I will remember to raise the lower parts of the doors somewhat so tiles can fit underneath.
-
That's the good stuff!
Absolutely loving this build GB. Cinema quality stuff. :-* :-* :-*
-
Gunbird, been so loving this thread. Full of win as the kids say. LOL
Can't wait to see what else you got coming.
Love the use of the Disney Cars die cast toys you and others been using for this genre.
Just located a substantial source of them at $2 a pop or better. Picked up a few to try your rusting and weathering tutorials on.

Too dark, right?
Basecoat of cheap "black" acrylic paint (more of a Dark Grey) drybrushed with Vallejo Light Grey.
-
To dark and much to "grey". I would try some more Drybrushsteps with middledark colors. Try to add some ocre or sandtone to the Greymix to warm it up a Bit. Before doing that try to wash over the whole model with a darkgreen / Darkviolet or Dark Blue Wash. That will give the whole part 1000% more life. Never ever pure grey, it tends to look flat. Cold Colors for the Shadows, warm colors for the Highlights. Thats the trick why models from french painters always look a bit more "alive", this kind of colorusage is very popular in France.
Mixtable for Colorcombos mixed in Grey:
Shadow Blue / Highlight (Orange/ocre)
Shadow Green / Highlight (Orange /red)
Shadow Violet / Highlight / (Yellow / Ocre)
Cheers Delta
-
Too dark, but easily fixed.
Loving all of the stuff in this thread. Keep it coming.
-
Thx DD, you are very helpful with that idea. I agree that it is way too dark (although all of my 40K friends say it is perfect as is, just needs plants.....which I don't want cause it is Fallout!
I'll do some mixing of greys and sand tones to see if I can make it look patchy and worn. For the green, wet, mossy parts I'm set with the MiG AMMO washes slimy green and dark slimy green, but I will use that very sparingly. I'll do some research on French painting as well while I am at it, before I start mixing.
Thx Lucky, doing my best to supply more stuff soon!

Was thinking the same : too grey-ish.
If you have an airbrush you could spray a fine layer of some sand/stone color over it. The contrasts would show through and you'd have a stone colour.
-
Good advice indeed, DeltaDog! It can help me as well...
Pfsh, shouldn't be taking advice on realism from the 40k crowd, now should you, Gunbird... ;)
-
Just try to help^^
It has nothing to do with mossy or wet parts what I mean. Take a look on your screenshot 2 sides before in this Thread. The whole Image has an ocre-greenish basic colouring. Try to bring this balance between green and ocre on the walls and I bet you will be satified with the result. Adding some watersigns, mossy etc. should be the last finishing touch to individualize the overall picture.
BTW. You HAVE to go in Green, because the other parts of the Building are rusted metalparts in majority. The right contrast color should be green to avoid it looks a bit odd.
-
Decided to sponge over the entire thing with Vallejo Air Grey Primer, scrubbing it on so I now have a lighter basecoat. This gives me a better pallet to work with so I can use various washes to change the tone and colour and make it even more patchy.
Left is old, right is new. There is a immense difference, this is under daylight bulbs. If I take it downstairs to the kitchen table (my gaming table for now) the left one looks almost black and the right one a mid tone grey. Since the latter is what I will see the most, and will be for cons etc, I think it is the way to go.
(http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag363/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/Projects/Test%20ruin%2028mm/005_zpsduaury8l.jpg) (http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/media/Projects/Test%20ruin%2028mm/005_zpsduaury8l.jpg.html)
I will however make a scrap piece of foamboard and paint it exactly like this, and use that as a trial plate for the various filters and washes that I have. You know, being sensible :)
-
Maybe this here help you a bit. To have a uniform look for all my Vaultpieces I´ve made a Coloringplan with each step and mixed up large amount of Basecoat Colors to bring cold colors in it from the first layer. The right one is the greenish variant, the left one the Blueish. In the middle is just plain Vallejo Stonewall grey, which I use to bring up the Highlights. Normally I use the Blueish Basecoat on concrete, the greenish on the NMM metalparts.

That looks fantastic! Also you could cut up some of your tiles to make them look like broken tiles... that way you can get more use of them? That building totally reminds me of a super mutant stronghold from Fallout 3! Well done!

Thx for the paint swabs DD.

15 landmines. Not much to say about these, I started them back in It's a Trap! (October!? Time flies!)
Army-ish green, Deval Mud wash, red trigger, normal basing style dusted on the ends of the mines. Mines themselves are Oyumaru moulding copies from the launchers op top of the Furioso Dreadnaught....I thought they would make great mines. Sue me :) Added some small tufts to a few, and newspaper bits to two more, and left the rest bare. They are going straight into my counters box. Will work fine for Inquisitor, TNT, Necromunda. 15mm round 2mm plywood bases that are sadly no longer available from Fenris Games. Damn, I like these. Might have to go 2mm MDF now.
No progress on the Wasteland Ruin. Right now I will finish painting the inside grey with a sponge too, and then call it a day, maybe paint the doors and tiles etc, and just game with it. And start the other bits for the square, and do all of the additional weathering atc at the end, with a broad brush. I've been staring the damned thing to death for the last week so it is better if I take some time off that particular ruin and get started on a new ruin. Something more suitable for Mordheim. Or dare I say, Frostgrave? Yes, that sounds like a good idea.
-
Love the fallout-ification of the crashed aquila lander. I have one of those and was thinking of phasing it out of the post-apoc collection after I had some alternative terrain, but your paintjob pulls it right out of 40k and into the wastelands!
Consider it stolen :D

Finished sponging grey on the model all over, even inside where it is bloody hard to reach. Did the tops with a almost pure white highlight, only picking up the top and some of the other straight edges, but it hardly shows. Finished painting the rebar in the base brown tone, will do a brown wash to pick up all the crusts and then do a orange drybrush tomorrow evening. Also just finished painting (well, using a sponge) 2 weathered green doors and a wooden door with glass. Just need to clean the edges a bit. I'm thinking of doing the tiles in a Khaki colour, that seems to match the ones I saw in the bunkers and KPN buildings I frequented over the years.
I'm expecting a envelope with a dozen or more sheets of posters and newspapers to cut up, bathe in coffee and spread all over the floors. After that it is time for washes and final weathering, before reprimering the plasticcard edge that has worn a bit and painting it black with 2 good coats of gloss and a matte varnish to end it. I don't see a point in varnishing the model atm, It is built pretty solid and not likely to be tossed around by me anyway...
-
What an excellent piece! Great job!
-
Both thumbs up! This become absolutely awesome!

A classic in the making. 8)
I think you did the right thing to go back over it with the lighter grey.

It's a winner !

Man, that is a really impressive result. Well done. :-*

3 Doors Down
(https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iYUg_a2-0eU/VrPGD17dgBI/AAAAAAAAAkM/tdrjO0MnzjA/s1600/003.JPG)
Sorted the weathering and the labelling of the 3 doors.
Also washed all of the rebar with Devlan Mud and afer that had dried, with Vallejo Light Rust Wash for that crusted rusted iron effect.
Next up: painting and weathering the tiles, and after that doing the paperwork. Can't wait, though that last step is going to take a few evenings I guess.
-
Massive and amazing Gunbird, well done. It has come out really well, all the levels and depth to the terrain is perfect for gaming on.
Oh and that rebar rust.. :-* :-* :-* :-* I need a tetanus shot just looking at it :-*
Brilliant work. Any plans for a few more?
Cheers

The Building is so made with so much Love to Detail its amazing! The Rust really brings it up! I was a bit concerned in the beginning about usind toothpics for the metalparts instead of wire, but the Paintjob integrates them perfect to the building! I´m really curiuos to see it after weathering and paperwork!
-
CB; according to my sketches I will add 3 more pieces to this one so they can be arranged to be the shell of a single building. Then repeat again with another building in 4-5 pieces, but with the pieces in such a way they can be mixed with the first or used as stand alone pieces. I've (re)learned a lot from this test piece and am looking forward to doing more, even if I did get fed up with this one for a week or so. lol
DD; in the past I made some with wire for rebar, but they got too easily damaged /pushed inside the foam and I found that toothpicks, due to their width and absorbing power, work particularly well with foamboard and woodglue. And now I have found out that with the filler added they are solidly fixed in place AND actually look like well rusted iron. Added bonus is that a couple of boxes of toothpicks only set me back pennies and can be cut with a simple knife, unlike ordering in brass wire (which I can't afford) or using paperclip cut offs. The disadvantage is that you can only do straight lines and not the tangled rebar look that is a fad in Syria right now. Having said that, I try to always make my scenery indestructable or at the very least hardwearing so that disadvantage is no real concern for me. But there is still plenty to do :)
-
For a bit more realism on the rebar, you can wind some wire or thread around it.
I use fine copper wire from solenoids (electronics)
-
Oh, I have thin wire, but after 50-100 years of outdoor rusting I doubt you would see it, plus it adds another step to a already lenghty process and I'm actually doing this testbuild to see if I can speed things up a bit as there are loads more to build!
-
Rust 10-10
-
You could try plastic toothpicks? They could be heated and bent for some of that rebar look you're talking about. I think you have a fine result there as-is, though. :)
-
The Vallejo rust is surprisingly good; will definitely add to my arsenal. I've been struggling with a rust effect all this past week and the Vallejo wash looks like it would have been superior to the AK product I used.
It's a brilliant build, and remarkably speedy. Johan, you seem to be cutting just the right corners in favour of the ones that count.
If I wasn't going Plasticville, I'd be sorely tempted to try this sort of project myself.
-
Huge and wonderful.
Just caught up with this thread - love what you've done with the Battle For McDonalds flyer, gives it a whole new lease of life :)
But this ruin is utter, wonderful madness lol
-
Thanks Cypher. Battle for McDonalds! lol
Right, sketches already made, foamboard at the ready and I know what to do and what not to do now to speed up things. I just want to get this one finished before I start the 3 pieces that complete the block. And then do it all over again for possible 3 more blocks like this. (only 15 more pieces to go then, lovely! ) :)
I did most of the newspapers, just need to paint the tiles, add some more newspapers and magazines, do the washes and then trim the edge in black and varnish that. And then she's done.
(http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag363/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/Projects/Test%20ruin%2028mm/2016-02-06%2022.46.55_zpskebnvriu.jpg) (http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/gunbird20mmunbird20mm/media/Projects/Test%20ruin%2028mm/2016-02-06%2022.46.55_zpskebnvriu.jpg.html)
Apolagies for the shitty phone pic, will do better when it is finished somewhere next week, with detailshots.
-
I love it!
-
I wish I could do other stuff like cans and what not, but your can making method is too time consuming, and the cutting plastic pipe technique just gives me lots of twisted bits of round that are anything but straight, even using my trusty The Chopper. Then again more small stuff is prone to get damaged and get in the way, unlike flat newspapers, so I guess I will leave it at that. For my next section I will add in some fixed scenery of the porcelain kind :D

Excellent work - the rusting effect is awsome :-*

Started dong a Space Marine statue for the central square (for the RT game), managed to completely balls up the weathering so now I have a chalky green popsickle....so that needs to be stripped. In frustration I grabbed one of the wooden cubes on my desk, played with it for a while and then though that instead of making them statue bases for Frostgrave, why not turn them into concrete roadblocks? We do the same thing in our modern day era, and I can't afford resin Jersey barriers so why not use these?
So, lastnight I smeared wallfiller all over 6 of them and let that dry, and this afternoon I sanded them again, not smooth, but leaving a pattern. I used a sponge and added a a grey with a pinkish hue craft paint on all of them, and after that dried a stone grey craft paint, also with a sponge, pushing it into the ridges. Then, using another sponge and a piece of heavy card, I marked all of them with weatherd yellow lines on top. Drilled holes and inserted bent pieces of paperclip and added a wathered down wallfiller to the metal...this creates a beuatiful corroded effect when painted brown and washed. Then some more weathering with a off white sponge for highlights, and right now I'm adding pinwashes with very thinned mud Devlan Mud and Vallejo Dark Grey. This picture is from just before that.

I'll weather the bottom halves with some darker colours, and then add posters to a few of them I think, and call them done.
I will do a tutorial on these soon, as they are dirt cheap to make and a ultra fast way to get additional cover on the table.

Brilliant. You captured the look perfectly.
I swear there are twenty of these blocking off construction sites in my neighbourhood right now. :o

I really like those. And like you say, they couldn't be easier to make and paint. :)

Lovely pieces. And easy to make!

Brilliant work.

Also working on something....refreshing, but won't show that till it is finished :)
Edit: a mere 30 minutes later....
A tribute to the refreshing drink of the Wastelands (also objective or something to put in front of a ruin). Miniature Coca Cola bottle relabelled (and bottlecapped!) on a suitable plinth and 60mm round base.

I looked at ageing the glass too, but those bottles turn to a opaque white colour in the sun and I'm not sure how to copy that. Or do dust and grime on glass but I'm not sure it will stick...I've never painted real glass.... Oh well, this looks nice too :)

agreed, it looks good. Just keep some kooky cultists near by in each game...
Or add the "holy" mop and bucket" to the base aswell lol

I´d leave it clean too. If you like to age glass you can varnish it with a matt acrylic. That should already do half of the trick Then you could apply some washes to the desired effect.
-
Very cool additions Gunbird! I would age the Bottle to fit it better to the whole tabletheme. Otherwise it will spot out of the scenery for all times and that is a consitant pain in the......
My suggestion for Aging Glass is a sturdy cotton Bag and 2-3 Hands of very hard sharp edged littel stones, something like Basaltsplit which is used to prepare the sidewalks in wintertimes to avoid slippery. Take the Bottle in the Bag with the stones and shake it a good while. Nothing else to do.
Cheers Delta
-
Michi: Matt varnish...but of course! That I did not see that. Then some light washes.
DD: It is already glued solid to the block in one single go without glue getting everywhere, something I do not want to try my luck at again. Basaltsplit I have loads though. It is just a pity these small bottle s are hard to get cheaply so I can experiment with them.
I will experiment with the varnish on a old drinking glass first though. Thx guys, very helpful!

These latest pieces are top notch! :-*
Any chance for a terrain set up pic? :)

You`ve did a absolutly great job on the weathering of the Bottle! Maybe for a final touch if you still have the mood for it, you could use the "halved feather technique" to add some white cracks to the bottle!

Not likely. Sofar all I have is a aircraft wreck, a half finished ruin, a couple of billboards, some scatter scenery, some cars, and not much else. Ask me again when I doubled this amount (6 months or less?)

I'm sure it would look great, especially if you have some terrain type scenery (hills, rocks, etc.) to go with it. That Nuka Cola monument and the building you made are absolutely fantastic.

I second some others about the monument - well done and gives a funny vibe! Watch out for bottle openers around...

Me and a buddy will be testing the This is not a Test scenario "Tanks for nothing" this friday and the mission objective for that is a water heater. So, after lunch, I grabbed some parts and built one from scratch.

Mm, agreed, the base is a bit big/obvious. But not sure placing magnets in the walls of the ruins for possible objectives is a neat solution either... ???
You'd need too many magnets depending on the rotation/placement of each ruin surely???.. just so that objective is perfectly placed out of sight of all teams.
Perhaps disguise the base a little more? Bevel the base and mound up waste/rubble towards the back edge? What do you guys think?
Cheers
Matt
-
I rather have it obvious. I would not be the first time I left models or little scenic bits in houses or in bushes just because the bases blended in too wel. I know one of my 20mm Iraqi's is still in Ireland and that game was 7 years ago :D
When in doubt, sprinkle some sand and grit, works just as well if you really want it to be hidden.

If you really want to go that way you have to prepare your terrain smartly for a magnetic usage in Objective markers etc. The main failure in wargaming magnetic applications are, that the people always have the one and only way in their heads to make a magnetic coupling with TWO neodymiums. That is overkill!
The only magnet has to be AT THE OBJECT!! The surrounding has nothing else to do as BEING MAGNETICAL! That is sooo easy to achive. Everybody here uses the PVA, Sand, Acrylic Paint, filler Mix to make structures on the walls, floors etc. The trick is to add 2-3 Spoons of Ironpowder to the mix. Ironpowder isn`t expensive and you can get it on ebay for a good price. The Result in your final texture will not have any noticeable difference but all surfaces are magnitical useable with neodymiums.
Important hint while doing this! Its absolutly important to mix the Ironpowder in first with the pure Acrylic paint!!!! BEFORE you add the PVA Glue! otherwise the mixutre will NOT cure hard and proper! Thats caused by the chemical issue, that PVA Glue looses its binding properties while the presence of Ironions! To mix it with the Acrylic first coates the Ironparticles with paint and keep the parts chemical seperated as much as possible.
All my casted Vaultparts are made out of Ironpowder filled Resin ;-) I can attach anything on them with just a little Magnet.
Happy Experimenting!
Cheers Delta
-
Huh... Very interesting idea, iron filled paint.
The base of the wee heater works for me. Reminds me of domestic mechanical / plumbing features back in Singapore, where just about everything is cast in concrete and tiled.
-
Huh... Very interesting idea, iron filled paint.
rather pricey. then again, 1L would last you several lifetimes if you only use it for this purpose.
-
How about just using magnetic paint, available in every DIY and craft store these days? I picked up a tin of that for painting the bases of my 3mm stuff so they stick to my trays.
-
Maybe it depends on the used brand of magnetic paint, but I´ve used 3 different brands till today and have not achieved a satified result yet. The magnetic power of this paints is quite weak. The used material in this paints seems to be the same magnetic powder that is used in the 1-2mm thick magnetic foiliages for magnetic stickers etc. My expierences are, that this magnetic powder is much weaker in the magnetic bonding with a neodymium magnet, then the pure Iron in form of thin metalsheet or powder is.
Cheers Delta
-
Wow :o what an idea, I'd never heard or considered that.
Delta, i have a question. What is the oxidizing process for the iron introduced into the terrain? Will your painted surface crack and oxidize over time? Or is the acrylic paint enough to seal it?
Cheers
Matt
-
I´ve did those magnetic Wallcoverings since more than 12 years now and have never noticed any oxidation on them since they´ve been finished. The ready dryed Paint is like a little Rubbercoating around the particles and enclose them against any air I guess. I always using latex Wall paint for my Texturemix instead of simple acrylics. The Texturelayer stays more flexible after drying and avoids the cracking of this layer in general. Don´t know if this have an significant positive effect on the Ironoxidation as well. I have never made a phd work out of my Hobbystuff, just useing my chemical study knowledge to make some little improvements in traditional techniques.
Cheers Delta

Yeah fair enough, thanks for the reply Delta and your experience with the stuff. VERY interesting!

It really is a great game, I'm hankering to start my own campaign in a few weeks.
I did want to point out that there's a hard limit of 4 models from each warband allowed to search after a game, with Leaders and Freelancers disallowed from searching. Should curtail the rapid growth a little.

Great to see everything on the table all at once! That is a fine set up you have going there sir.

Nice to see my labelwriter can be used to print of B/W pictures too, that will come in handy. Now all the dice, counters and rulers are in one box, and as soon as I have demo models they will go inhere too, as well as more scenic counters then the laminated ones I have now. And with a little space for the water heater (this box is purely for demoing the Tanks for Nothing scenario.

Finally starting to get back into the modelling parts of things again.
Was cobbling some light cover together, I'll make some more if I can salvage the mangled sprues I was sent.

Whatever you do, don't kick them! lol

Looking at the picture of the buried bombs - my eye was caught by the offcut ends on the left of the photo. Please tell me I'm not the only person who saw those and thought "breasts"!!
This is a seriously good thread. Actually - couldn't those offcuts be put on small bases and terrained in for use as IEDs?
-
take those tips and then get a cheap angel statue from the dollar store or a small doll face from the craft store, then add some rubble to make a collapsed statue or a sign to a strip joint!
-
Or use them on a larger scale from female punk model and make a Tank Girl memorial statue... lol

Bit of a dual piece, for Necromunda and the ruined city and depending on the posters I put on it Fallout etc too. Just a generic LOS blocker slash objective.

Started it this weekend at the Figz convention where I gave a Foamboard workshop (well, answered peoples questions mostly, no one had the time to actually sit down and make something for themselves) as a bit of a quick demo piece. Just 1 sheet of foamboard in 4's and a bit of left over board for the entryway. Obviously it is a PIP, the greenstuff cast doorlight is still curing so that is for tomorrow, and I need to cut out a cardboard door for the entryway. I've left off as much Imperial signs as possible, you will only see a bit of that in the posters and the marking on the doorway. Other then that the basic weathering is done, now it is time to go to town with various washes and other effects.
As you can see, just a foamboard box with a ventilation grille from the DIY store stuck inside of it

Oh, and it's a "Necromundian Waste Air Processing Unit" .......anyones guess what it really does. Could be polluting what air there is for all I know.

Nice work. Some clever cutting and a couple of baffles and it could be a dice roller.

Ah shoot, why did I not think of that.

Looks great! :) I really need to improve my foamcore crafting ability, it's pretty s**t currently... lol
-
Great new addition. I would give the modification idea with the dice tower a go, it fits perfect for this purpose!
-
I'll finish this one, then give the dice tower approach a try just for fun.

Dropping the F-Bomb. And others :D

You have Transfers with 10 Tons of fun on it??? or custom printed ones therefore?
The Bombs a re cool, but I really like what youve made out of the Carlsberg Container!
-
10 tons of fun is from a 1/35 scale HEMMT truck lol I trade peoples left over decals whenever I can.
-
Beautiful scatter terrain. And yeah - good decal reuse.

Due to a various array of reasons things have slowed down a bit and I've calculated that I have less then 6 months left to get things finished. Ergo, making all the buildings myself isn't going to cut it (literally). I might add a few more, but not enough to cover a 90x90 table. So I made a rewrite, looked at the available budget and the available time and made changes.
I've been making use of a lot of Lasercut stuff this year, and I now know what it can and what it can't. Knowing this, I've been looking at possible Fallout locations to copy on the table, but only the ones that have uses beyond the Post Apocalyptic setting. So things like a Gas Station, a Hospital, a Junkyard etc. Most options are outside my current budget. One of the few that isn't, is a Trailer Park. A Trailer Park in a run down state is perfectly acceptable for a Zombie game or a game of Black Ops or even someone summoning Old Ones! The amount of run down stuff can be varied depending on the game you want to play. It's also one of the cheaper, faster options due to the availability of off the shelf lasercut buildings that only need a paintjob.
So I made a quick drawing of a table setup, to get an idea of what I could do with the stuff available to my budget, plus what items I would have to knock on a few friends doors for to have custom made.

As I have sold a lot of old wargames stuff recently I was actually able to invest today, so within 2 weeks I'm expecting a pile of trailers and small buildings (which gives me 2 weeks to finish building most of my 3mm city) to then build and paint asap all of the received scenery.
I've already been discussing what to do next with a gifted fellow Aspie (he will print, clean up and cast up 28mm Pink Flamingoes!) but I will not commit any more money to this cause untill the first lot of MDF buildings is done. I tend to get way too far ahead of myself and I will not let this happen this time, as I really want to do this demo.
And that is it for now. Stay tuned for more :)

Great to hear! Looking forward to seeing more.
