Dont know if this is the correct forum part.
But we will see.
Because I am a big fan of romans in all scales, I decide last year to start a little project to create some legionaries which I will use for different small scirmish rules set.
As I like resin miniatures in the quality of alkemy and anvil industries miniatures, I decide the goal would be resin miniatures.
After many years of cooperation with different traditional green stuff masters of art, this time it should be the first real try with 3d sculpting.
So the search begun for a good sculptor.
At the end I have the great luck, that my favourite fantasy sculptor has a little time window for me :)
Andrea Tarabella, who sculpt for raging heroes and some other companies.
The miniatures should be in a very bulky style, and than in a 36 mm feet to eye level.
Why this scale?
Because I like to paint it, if the miniatures are a little bigger, and so I could use them also for different scales with different rules.
After some talks with Andrea we decide to use his ball/joint system, so the legionaries could be arranged a little different.
For the first project part, there should be:
legionary with pilum
legionary with a fantasy gladius version
legionary with sling
centurio
tribun
legat (tribun with an older man head :) )
signifer
imaginifer
vexillifer
aquilifer
cornicen
Additional some different heads (bandaged, scared, shouting)
Attached you find the first aateur sketch from me :) and the different designs.
Please remeber, that are fantasy romans, many details are not historical correct :)

Looking good but more dynamic poses will be welcome.
A good idea, many people use to have big scale minis today. And with today GW scale standards you'll be ok for the younger players.
-
I like them a lot.
-
What makes them fantasy Romans?
Just an observation, but they don't look very fantastical.
Not sure about the Dacian armguards though. Or the sling.
But otherwise, nice enough designs.
-
Really like these, good luck with the venture and look forward to seeing the finished product!

The OTT 'Ahnald the Sigmarine' physiques of these figures alone is enough to qualify them as Fantasy Romans, at least in my book. Definitely not my cup of vīnum, but I wish the OP success in his endeavour, all the same.

Thanks for the comments!
My personal goal is not to sell them, only to show the community the way from a idea to the final miniature.
May be Joel from anvil industry, who print and cast them, would also sell some in his shop, we will see :)
For me, Anvil industry miniatures are from the quality of material and casting the best in the market.
A very hard resin, very clean and detailed castings.
Here some example of the last ones:

At last pictures of the tribun and the standards, hope you like them
-
Again, great detail! I could see myself painting these :)
-
Astounding detail.
Look like fun models to paint. I'm really curious how the casts turn out.
-
Well, they do look great.
Historical in detail, fantasy / cartoonish in style I'd say.
They'd almost do for Asterix ;)

+1 with the Captain !
Very cool work on those Romans. :-*

That face is incredible. Funny how Ancient Greek fantasy is relatively common but other ancients as fantasy are hard if not impossible to find. Not sure how much demand there would be for Roman fantasy but these minis look the part. You would need a big enough range perhaps to make it viable, including enemies of Rome. Personally prefer to see less muscle and more movement and a Roman throwing a Pilum. The Gladius is a tad long but as you said these are fantasy Romans.
On a side note I would be interested in Asterix and Obelix minis of which there have been a few available over the years http://wk.frothersunite.com/sc/asterix/asterix.htm.
-
As enemies, there is a early stage plan for male and female gladiators.
Something like this for the male ones:

But not finally decided yet.
-
Very nice, this is a section of the market that is surprisingly untapped.
If you need any painting helpers, let me know. ;)
-
I quite like them too. If I were into AoS, I'd probably try to combine the two ranges into something coherent with lots of conversions.
On a side note I would be interested in Asterix and Obelix minis of which there have been a few available over the years http://wk.frothersunite.com/sc/asterix/asterix.htm.
For what it's worth, I'm still looking to sell my complete set of the 15/18mm Atlas ones (village + Roman camp + battlefield set). ;)
-
A little question to you because I am not shure.
Do you think for cavalry mount it would be better a armoured warhorse or a griffon style like in the attached sketch?
-
Would a wolf be a better mount for a fantasy Roman?
It would fit in with Romulus & Remus.
-
Post a picture in here please, downloaded the file but could not open it.

Love the first one. It would be a great looking figure!
-
I'm really enjoying iit.Eager to see the final result. :)
-
Apologies for being dim, but when we say AoS scale, do we mean AoS scale of a standard human (like the Korne barbarian dudes) or scale them to match the Sigmarines?
Either way, I would very much be interested in a Fantasy Roman Force to act as a Remnant state hellbent on bringing back the glory of the -INSERT GENERIC NAME HERE- Empire.
Although I'd like my Romans to have normal Horse cavalry, I don't mind animal style cavalry, just I tend to reserve those for non-human races, or specialist units/characters.
-
They will me in the scale of the sigmarines.
I am a old man and like it, when the mininiature a little bigger ;)
-
I like the images, but the 36mm option is a bit oversized for it, especially with the heroic proportions.
Most peoples collections for such games tend to be in the 25-32mm. Mixing in their tends to be within "normal" variation (at least with humans). Going larger also tends to make terrain end up looking a bit off in comparison.
Odd scales also don't sell that well anyway.
-
I understand the desire to go bigger for your own preferences. But, if you do want to try to sell these, I would also recommend going with the 28mm scale. I would definitely pick some of these up if they end up in a comparable size as my existing Otherworld/ Redbox /Citadel collection. If you do go bigger, I have no interest in them. They do look great though & I wish you the best on whatever you decide.
cheers-

I'd have to agree if you're going to try to sell them...if not, whatever you'd like. I'd go down to 30-32mm for some crossover sales, with the figures still being relatively large.
A lot of games have suffered in the 35-36mm area because it's such a proprietary scale.

I second this :)
-
I would also have to support reducing the size somewhat if they are going to be up for sale.
Though I appreciate wanting to have them larger (my old man is having similar issues) Sigmarines are pretty big guys even compared to Games Workshops average 28mm Human which I quite like scale wise (easier to paint, and the Barbarians look more Barbarianish lol).
However, perhaps a way around this is to do some larger Romans in the scale you are looking at, perhaps give them some of those Cavalry masks with the helmet and sell them as Half Ogre auxiliaries or whatever.
-
25/28mm would be too small IMO, I reckon 30/32mm would be a good compromise. Whichever you choose, some will like it, some not.
-
I find these fascinating, you never see Romans like this. The sculpting work is stunning.
Osprey have Broken Legions, a fantasy Roman game, coming out later this year.
https://ospreypublishing.com/blog/Wargames_The_Big_Reveal/ (https://ospreypublishing.com/blog/Wargames_The_Big_Reveal/)
These would be perfect for it.

;)
I have romans from Aventine (in my eyes the best EIR) , Prince August, Warlord, Victrix, Foundry (Perry), Foundry Imperial, A&A Miniatures, Andrea Miniatures etc.
With this project I leave the historical way and go with fantasy romans.
I like the bulky old style for many reasons.
The scale depands on personal like, not which would better to sell.
Selling is for me not important, I am a roman style miniatures fanatic and first time have enough money to do that, what I like ;)
Some time ago I have big hopes about the mierce miniatures fantasy romans, but look like it ends:
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/7/6/726763_sm-Byzantii,%20Darklands,%20Legionaries,%20Mierce.JPG
I am no fan of the new style infinity or others "real dimensions" miniatures.
I am a big fan of the frostgrave bulky miniatures.
As allways, some like this, other like this.
For this project here I have the luck to have the in my eyes best 3D fantasy scuptor and also the best man for 3D printing and casting, who use exact that resin I favour.
For me all is very good, i know what happen to the 36mm ranges like WWE or others.
But again, for me the sigmarines scale is that what I like to see on the tabletop for my romans.
When Joel is ready with the castings I will send some interested peoples a mini or two, but only when the will send me some photos of their painted legionaries which I could show you here and in other forums. ;) :D
Thank you all for your interest and your comments.
-
Because I get here and other forums PMs asking about selling the miniatures...
There is a plan that a very well known company will sell the miniatures in there online store ;)
The decision about that subject will be made next week, hopefully.
May be I have next week also news, when I could show the first pictures form the "real" miniatures.
-
Great detail on those 3D sculpts, sounds good that you have people with proper skills on board to transform that detail in resin as well. Lets hope that these will get picked up by that interested very well known company then :)
-
Beautiful Stuff there.

Bravo!
There is never any shortage of people telling you how things should be done, and why what you're doing is all wrong (including me! :D)
How lovely to be able to just do it the way you want to do it :)
Enjoy! They look great.
-
I would certainly purchase these. My first Roman fantasy attempt were Lamming Miniatures. Going back 40 years?? Pretty standard paint jobs with black arrows of chaos on a red shield. Wonderful memories.
-
After long waiting, here is the first cast :)

And yes, the sword hilt should have been cut ...
-
Looking really good, any news on the possible selling of these fine figures?
-
Yes, Joel from Anvil Industries will sell them in his onlineshop, when all variants are printed and cast.
-
wow, those turned out amazing. WHat detail....
