Title: The journey of a fantasist (new with Autumn Troll !)
Post by: Asslessman on 07 January 2016, 08:09:36 PM
So here I am, I've decided to get on board the Frostgrave train after many years with Warhammer. I really like painting small groups and warbands so Frostgrave is the perfect excuse to paint more I guess !

As any frostgrave team has to be lead by a good wizard and apprentice I think it's only natural I begin with them :

The wizard was first intended without tattoos :

But to tie him with the apprentice I've decided to give both Woad patterns :

I'll be adding models one after the other whenever I feel like it in order to avoid any pressure. The painting is willingly quick and easy without trying to overdo things or spend much time.
You can read more about the wizard HERE (http://leadplague.blogspot.fr/2016/01/frostgrave-wizard-from-asgard.html) and more about his apprentice HERE (http://leadplague.blogspot.fr/2016/01/apprentice-and-wizard-from-asgard.html).

You as well sir!

I started at the other end and have been busy making snowy terrain!

I guess we are looking at a witch or a summoner here though to be honest you could go with any of the schools and make it fit particularly because you get spells from so many other lists.

Great pair painted to your excellent standard.

The more I think about it the more I think he'll end up being a witch indeed. Terrain is always my weak spot hence why I didn't base them on a snowy ground...

Good job on some classics, JB. I like the minor conversion! I think the wolf pelt clad guy feels more senior though, or am I completely off? Pretty painting, as always!

Nice pair of minis, no school like old school! I particularly like the pale skin tones, really suit dabblers in the occult.

Haven't posted this one here already and I'm about to use it in a campaign of Mordheim this WE. They are the Champions of Law based on th eold Warhammer lore when Chaos still had Lawful opposites. I've based this band mostly on Jes Goodwin sculpts to provide a strong coherence between sculpts from very different origins (Chaos, Eternal champions, Dwarves and all).

This group has evolved from a single test model to a full grown warband and I'm still working on a Greater Demon to add to the bunch.

What a great idea that "glowing blue eyes" thing is! I might have to steal that for ... erm ... something at some point. If I can pull it off, that is. Good to see an appearance from Lord Aquila and Gladius too - was just looking at mine the other day and thinking: "I really should paint them at some point ..."

Cheers guys ! If you want to give the glowing eyes a try, I've put the link to the tutorial to paint these guys, nothing extraordinary really ! The heroic fighters of the known world really are a great set and iconic like no other !

Not often I can claim that but I actually finished a model in a night (from primed to fully based) !

This time it's a low level wizard for my champions of Law who will conviniently play the apprentice in my frostgrave games as well !

He's rather small when compared to the other members but hey, he's a rookie after all !

Mor about him in the associated blogpost HERE (http://leadplague.blogspot.fr/2016/03/wizard-apprentice-of-law.html) and I'll soon have a little more to share about him and his companions so for now I'll just leave you with a teaser ;)

Cheers, well I built this warband by converting chaotic model into laful ones and then I started adding other elements like Menilboneans and all. I wanted to represent every possible entry so I needed a beastman or a demon. While I was looking for bits I found those and thought it would be a cool concept to have "elevated" animals who have achieved a higher form of existence (sort of) thanks to the powers of the gods of Law to reward them for their service to hunt Chaos. That or maybe it's just a plain old lesser demon, I don't know exactly ^^ I thought it was funny to play with the beastman/demon ideas a bit !

Pretty simple, I've written a tutorial (link HERE (http://leadplague.blogspot.fr/2015/11/fresh-blood-and-tutorial-for-champions.html)), nothing really hard in it really. The phots are flattering but this is just a straightforwad speed job

Thanks guys, I have one last model for this warband that will take a little while but which should be great ;)

OK, this is a commission I made in exchange for an illustration. The Ogre is an old ogre hero from the Fantasy Warlord range (circa 91) and the goblin is from Redbox games but the pair just works wonderfully I find (not my choice).

I strongly advise you to go check the illustrations, backstory and musical inspirations I used for this pair on which I had to push my limits a little. (Blogpost HERE (http://leadplague.blogspot.fr/2016/04/an-odd-couple-ogrynn-and-goeblynkynn.html)).

Quick one today but I've managed to make a set of tokens for use in Frostgrave and other games. Those are rushed jobs with little money, time and energy spent but with efficience in mind. I 've tried to stay away from classic treasure trunks and tried to give some variety to the set.

You can see each of the tokens in detail with some explanations in the blogpost HERE (http://leadplague.blogspot.fr/2016/04/frostgrave-tokens.html).

OK, back to the champions of Law with a heavy weight this time. I needed a little punch so I though a Titan (Greater demon of Law) would be more than welcome !

The conversion work was minimal apart from the belly plate I sculpted from scratch. He's been an outrageous pleasure to paint (base parts from Bibby and Goodwin).

Awesome conversion and interesting backstory, never heard about the Lawful gods of Chaos in WH universe.
Interestingly they're mentionned right from the start in the first Realm of Chaos books and you do get mentions of them in many books, Bryan Ansell did mean to take them further than the chaos gods but given how painful the RoC books were, it just didn't happen I guess. Too bad because it would have been awesome but on the other side; it leaves us room to play !

There was a huge time gap between the release of the 2 books because of the tremendous amount of work involved and the other projects ongoing at the time, I guess that this sort of crazy period is part of what makes those books iconic.

I particularly like what you have done with that classic minotaur which, in its original state, is one of my all time favourite miniatures from the era (mine is still shamefully awaiting attention....) but I would never have thought of taking him in that direction.

I have one of those in storage, somewhere. If I drag it out, I might perform a little dental surgery on it. lol

OK, because I felt a little nostalgic, I decided to repaint the first model I finished (not started) back in 92). I honestly didn't try to push my limits here but just went for a laid back aproach and he thus was a very enjoyable model to paint (quite surprisingly).

Here he is next to his 24 years old counterpart.

Well, while it's clearly not the best model out there, I wouldn't say it's a bad one either, it did paint easily after a few putty work and there's room for textures or freehands which some painters appreciate really, I always think you have to paint a model before knowing it fully.

Brilliant work! 8)

It must be really rewarding to see how much you preogressed through the years, seeing them side by side like that.

And your original paintjob would actually be a pretty ok tabletop standard with just a quick wash with Devlan Mud or equivalent!

Obviously you wouldn't though. I still have my first painted miniatures, which unsurprisingly are also Hero Quest ones, and I'm keeping them in all their glorious, blocked-in enamel state as well. ;)

Coincidentally, your ogre was mentioned in an after-game conversation yesterday evening, when we were discussing painting skill progression, and my humble Hero Quest miniatures came up... :D

Here's a new one, I've just finished a special piece. This is the first sculpt ever from a 17yo friend who's started the hobby a couple of years ago. For some reason, he's opted for an oldschool vibe and I find it plenty of charm. Since he's had it moulded and cast, I had to paint my own copy so here it is :

The female is a modern vampire (still in production I'd say) with the torso of a Dog of war character named Lucreza Belladona. The guy is older, maybe 10 or 12 years old and was part of a set of undead pirate for the Sartosa setting.

Thanks you all, I have to say the feedback on these has been a real help !

Asslessman, can I ask how you paint the ghoul skin? It's very Romero! :)

Very easy, After a zenithal spray prime (white over black), I just basecoated with stone grey from PA (ref 884) which has a green tint actually. I just thin it enough to keep the benefit of my zenithaling. Once it's done I wash all the skin parts with a 50/50 mix of blue wash from GW with lahmian medium. I then add some purple wash (GW too) thinned with water in places like under the eyes, around wounds and such, then do the border of the wounds with crimson a carobourgh wash. I just come back to pick a few highlights with a very diluted stone grey on the cheekbones, nose, knuckles, eye lids and such places just to add contrast. It's really simple and quick, undead flesh has to be quite forgiving I suppose. ^^

@Deafnala : Thank you very much Sir !

So all these undead and vampires had to lead to thi point. You knew it was going to go this way. Wolves, Undead ones. Twice cursed animals.

Yesterday, we sat at our respective desks with friends and did a video chat. Nothing unusual so far. But we used this opportunity to paint a model each in a single session with our WORST brush just to see if we'd be able to replicate those PRO PAINTED models you see on ebay and the likes...

Here's the poor night goblin I painted and the brush I used :

Mor eabout him on the blog as usual (http://leadplague.blogspot.fr/2017/03/the-propainting-challenge-goblin.html) and if you want to see what the others did, you can check them here (http://scalecreep.blogspot.fr/2017/03/the-first-annual-pro-painter-burger.html) !

OK, here's something a bit different with a couple of Characters from the eternal champion saga : Corum and Jhary. I have to say I really fancy Corum as a character and Jhary is just as excellent. I kept things as close to what I imagine they must be like from my memories without trying to fin a totally different take on them.

Here are a few selected shots from a Mordheim campaign we played this WE. We played about 4 games each with 8 contestants and all games were linked with a bit of roleplay for added fun. Our GM did an amazing job with the tables as you can see but with the backstory as well which made the game something better than just a savage street butchery !

It is true Bob Olley's skeleton do have a very expressive face which sets them apart from the Harryhousen kind and would make them more suitable for Tim Burton's movies or such.
They're a real pleasure to paint if you just let the sculpt work for you instead of fighting it really. I'm eager to paint more.

Something a little different this time, I've got the Shadespire bug (have only played one game though) but I've decided to paint the model right away to get the opportunity to try it a bit more.
I've gone for the good ol' paladin look, I don't see them as real vanilla Stormcast honestly, they're just your vanilla lawful good blokes in armour.

OK, just to take part in an excellent contest (http://gonzohistorygaming.blogspot.fr/2017/11/the-first-monster-man-contest.html), I've decided to concert and paint a rubber rooster using my left hand (I'm right handed) to provide the kind of monster Gary Gigax came up with in the good old days...

Title: Re: The journey of a fantasist (new with a terrible new DnD monster !)

If that thread over in General Discussions needs any more proof that Gygax was trippin' balls when he came up with his monsters, this must be the most definite piece... lol

Cool that you set challenges for yourself, such as using your off-hand to paint. I tend to do the same thing (but not as extreme), whenever I start a project.

For instance, my Heresy Era Imperial Fists force is made up only of Rogue Trader and 2nd ed variant metal marines and I have not used a single drop of green paint in the entire force.

I find it keeps you thinking and creative, trying to do the max within the boundaries you have set for yourself...

keep it up; this thread is great! :)

A combination of the name of the beast and the appearance of the tentacles gives it a slightly innapropriate japanese cartoon feel.

As for Gygax's monsters I read somewhere that a lot of them were inspired by cheap chinese plastic toys. The creation process behing the rust monster was something like "Gary I need you to write some rules for this weird beetle with tentacles".

All that aside its a nice rooster model and the paintjob is good. The suckers on the tenticles look pretty cool too, but the tentacles could be joined to the body in a more convincing way :)

@Daeothar : Thanks a lot ! I completely agree some constraints can liberate you sometimes, Bach did use them as well as plenty of artists and the solutions you need to come up with are a great boost for imagination.

@Munindk : You should check out the contest page, it's precisely because the original monster manual was filled with cheap toys that I used them and the contest is about it too. It's also why both sculpting and painting are "crude" to say the least, I wanted to capture the techniques and ability of my youth. ^^

Thanks a lot folks !

Well thank you all really ! This one was quite diffreent from how I usually paint so I didn't know if it would be cool enough. There are things I'd like to correct on the next one like light contrasts (I find that one a bit too dark on the whole). But it's a fun thing to change habits and I did learn a few things so all in all a very good experience.

Epic painting styles! A treat to look through.
Could you tell me where the graveyard is from? I like the look a lot.
I'm afraid I can't, my mate Cedric made most of his epic scenery from scratch and a few pieces from all sources ! ^^'
