Title: F&IW AAR 'Nouvelle France'
Post by: Dr DeAth on 20 June 2016, 06:45:04 PM
Malamute and I played the 'Nouvelle France' scenario from the Studio Tomahawk forums.  An interesting game, with the scenario favouring a French victory (at least that's what Nick said after he lost  lol ).  To be fair the scenario is a little one sided, but balancing up the victory points is easy enough for those that are bothered with such things.

Scenario and details can be found here http://studiotomahawk.freeforums.org/skirmish-in-nouvelle-france-t5603.html (http://studiotomahawk.freeforums.org/skirmish-in-nouvelle-france-t5603.html)

Part 2 . . .

The game opened with an exchange of fire between the Provincials on the road and the Compagnies Franches de la Marine

Meanwhile the Canadian Militia and Huron scouts made their way to the settlement via the dense wood, with the Mohawks and Rangers in pursuit.  NOTE: We had declared the woods to be dense cover at the start of the game, which meant visibility was limited to 8" with a -2 cover bonus,  on reflection the game would have been more interesting has they been light cover (12" and -1)

The fighting in the woods is desperate and results in the Mohawks and Canadians being wiped out and the Rangers forced to withdraw.  The remaining Huron's continue to exchange shots with the British regulars who, despite there superior numbers are unable to inflict casualties on the indians who are making good use of the cover in wood.  Unfortunately for the British the Huron have no trouble picking off the redcoat firing line stood in the open.

At this stage the losses on both sides start to take effect and the French forces withdraw.  As the French Marines pull back deeper into the woodlands, the last remaining Provincials hurry down the road to the burning settlement to harass the retreating French regulars.

The game finished at this point, with the French having scored 7 points (2 per burning building and 1 for captured stores) and the British 2 (1 per French unit destroyed - Canadians and Hurons).  It was a fun game with plenty of action.  If we were to play it again we'd make all the woods light woods, and reduce the victory points for burning buildings to 1pt each to give the British a more even chance.

From what manufacturer are the Compagnies Franches de la Marine?
Redoubt, Blue moon?

Give them a go, they won't disappoint - we're having some good games with them.

Okay I'm persuaded. Rules ordered, now just need to sort out the figures. May I ask what you used for the French in tricorne (the chaps in blue).

Edit: Just realised they're not French. Much to learn.

great friends to play with.

They're Galloping Major Provincial troops.

The Rangers, Indians, French Militia and Provincials are Galloping Major. The French regulars, French marines and British regulars are Redoubt Miniatures.

Galloping Major are absolutely gorgeous figures. The provincials are probably my favourite of the sculpts so far. They have British Regulars on the workbench at present and they look lovely ;D

I have a unit of provincials which are superb minis, its worth getting their militia too as they are even better and some could double for your west country games too

Interesting, what didn't you like about the rules?

I don't honestly know, they just did not seem to gel with us, it seemed that they had been rushed into production. There were a few anomalies which I can't recall, except the one, where I think It was a British officer had to take a particular trait, and nowhere could we find anything to say what it was, lost in translation perhaps?

Yes the militia are very nice as well, Mark has two units of them. ;D

I've got three units actually  ;)  and they are very nice indeed, lots of variety in dress and poses that give a real 'militia' feel to the units.

Great report and lovely figures as ever.

But is that a CLOTH???!  :o  ???  :?  :'(

No, it's a Multi-Tonal Compressed Fibre Battle Mat (MTCFBM).  It just looks like a cloth  :D

A fantastic looking game as always.  I like the scenario. Does it have a place in the BLAM game, perhaps with an Indian Village ( I have one in progress) providing each side with a similar objective and having to balance who attacks and who defends.  If so we are going to need a bigger cloth..... I mean a bigger table.

Hi Gary,

We are going to organise a big game at Marks probably in late August/September when hopefully we can all make it.
A good opportunity for you and I to discuss our BLAM game.

I like the idea of an indian village.

Hello, this is Fredéric Studio Tomahawk. It feels weird to see one such scenario, played by someone else. And it's great fun, I like. I hope you have fun (apparently yes). We will redo the other scenarios next season ... If you are as simple to set up please. Thank you and thank you again .... ah I forgot, the figurines are beautiful ... :-*
see you soon

Thanks for your comments Fred, we're really enjoying M&T for the F&IW and we're considering using it for a 18th century 'Pirates in Darkest Africa' campaign too.  Keep publishing the scenarios!
