It's high time I make my official thread for the 2016 Army Painter challenge. I'm going to work on my long neglected Darkest Africa Azande from Wargames Foundry.
Looks like I need to paint about seventy figures this time, four ten man units of Azande spearmen and two ten man units of 'regular' rifles plus a variety of leaders. I already have ten or so spearmen and some riflemen in traditional dress painted, from a few years ago.
I also have sixty+ pygmies and if I can get to it my hope is to finish the project with 'Pygmy Month' and knock the lil' guys out in thirty days.

What rules do you favour ?

I've played The Sword and the Flame 'Africa Variant' the most, with In the Heart of Africa a close second. I'm eagerly awaiting CONGO, so I hope it's good :)
-
Love your work so I'll enjoy following this. Richard
-
Excellent Matt. Looking forward to this :)

Yes I,m fond of Chris Peers Heart of Africa rules and I see there's a new version just out , I wonder do they differ much from the first one. Looking forward to your future posts.
-
Go for it, Dr.
You can do it. :)
-
Have some DA in the pipeline myself so I will be watching this with a keen eye to borrow ideas. lol :)
-
Looking forward to it as well. Maybe even a few in progress shots?
-
Love your Darkest Africa stuff, my breath is bated ;D
-
Good luck for this project! :-*
-
With CONGO on the horizon I too have some Darkest Africa in the paint queue. Will watch your progress with much interest. :D
-
I'm sure I will enjoy a lot this thread.
Good luck!

I have my first unit painted and photographed. I started with the Azande Riflemen because they're kind of boring and I like to get the plain looking guys out of the way first ;)
Having acquired some rifles and vaguely Egyptian style uniforms, these soldiers are practicing under the watchful eye of a drillmaster.

Testor's Dullcote spray is really underperforming lately, I'm still getting a satin finish even after buying a new can.
-
A good start! I'm using W&N Galeria matte mixed with a little Tamiya Flatbase at the moment. It is really dead matte.

I've never tried a brush-on finish, maybe I'll give it a go.

Nicely done Matt. 8)
Always good to see some DA miniatures. I was torn between Darkest Africa and BoB Chinese for AP2016.
-
Maybe Duncan Ceramic Spray Sealer SS339 Super Matte might be an alternative.

Used it several years ago and was satisfied

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give that a try as well.
-
Well done.
Very nice painting. :)
-
Great start. Nice lineny look to the cloth.
I shall say this very quietly as I think it a heresy as I have never seen anyone else mention it at all but when Testors changed the formula on the spray to rid the toluene I switched to Humbrol acrylic matt spray :o Readily available, cheap and consistent.
-
I use Dullcote sprayed on with a cheap airbrush, best matt varnish I've ever used. Cost a fortune in postage from the US but it's worth it.
-
New dull cote is definitely a satin finish. :'(
I have used my airbrush as well as a brush with the W&N + Tamiya Flat base mixture. But if you can find a spray can you like that is definitely easier.
-
Wow! Very nice, and loving the scenery too!

Not if you tip a little bit of the clear liquid out.

Lovely job Matt 8)

That's what I use when it's not too humid.

Nice work, Doc.
Those faces are so good.
:-* :-*
I wouldn't call 'em boring.
Not within effective range anyway....
;)

The war drums have been sounding relentlessly, frantically trying to summon all capable Azande warriors in the vicinity to battle. Over a month late... and they're here. Some of them at least...
My favorite is probably the leader with a 'Come at me bro!' pose. The head is a swap from a spare Azande warrior.

I've been seriously strapped for time over the last several weeks. I haven't even squeezed in a game of 'Congo'!!!
-
Brilliant :-*
-
Bleedin' lovely!
:-* :-*
-
Yeaaahhh!
Your jungle and his inhabitants are gorgeous !
-
Really nice, especially those shields!
-
Great work :o :o The shields are great but that spider shield is inspired!! :-* :-*

Cracking work.
-
Love your work! I never get tired of Africa.
-
Late again. Although this time the drummer is present...
Random shotgun equipped Azande in uniform.
I had two of the elephant tusk musician figures, so I decided to add a new headdress to match my previously painted MangBattu confederation figures.

Really great work per usual :-* :-* :-*

-
Fantastic painting and great scenery excellent work
-
Fantastic work as always Matt!
-
What kind of mat is this?
-
Very very pretty... I like... :-*
-
What kind of mat is this?
This is the Kickstarter I obtained it from:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/819121569/frontline-gaming-and-tablewartm-megamattm?ref=profile_backed
I think they may have changed the design for subsequent releases.
-
Thank you mate!
-
A small update this time, just the last three Azande riflemen.
These last three slackers finish off the unit of more progressive semi-uniformed Azande.
I have six more spearmen to finish up, then the Azande group will be done. Then on to pygmies...
-
I finished up the last six Azande warriors last night.
Joined up with their fellow tribesmen.

I think that's it for the Azande force. I'll have to double check but I believe that's all the Azande figures in the Foundry Victoriana catalogue, as well as the musketmen set that Copplestone Castings released. Every year I get one step closer to finishing off the Darkest Africa range :)
-
Really like the subtle skin tones you get and as someone already mentioned the shield's are cracking :o :o
-
Superb work, Matt! Love the different and complex shield designs ... :-*
-
Lovely stuff, a fine collection. :-*
-
Looks fantastic all laid out like that!
-
Another set of your superlative shields :-* :-* I am sorry that you have worked your way through the catalog as this is a thread that I really look forward to!

Oh, I still have Darkest Africa figures to paint. This was just the end of the Azande pages in the catalogue :)
I still have Pygmies I plan to add to this.
Then on to Baluchis, generic tribal warriors, tribal warrior women, all the generic weird hair/braided hair/etc. variants too.
After that... Copplestone Ngoni, Watuta, Germans, and Somalis. Looking like a couple more years ;)
Sad thing is I had them all painted once and sold them off before I set my goal of collecting the range :(
-
This is great, I am just trying to build up some impetus painting indigenous Africans of different kinds (mainly Zulu for now) for IHMN and Congo, and seeing all this eye candy is very inspiring!
I also need to start making some jungle terrain somewhen during this winter, and, again, your stuff is a fine source for inspiration.
-
Your work is definitely a great inspiration Matt! Problem usually is it also inspires more purchases. :D
-
Ah, very good news then :D. Your loss in selling off these gems is our gain as we get to see them (with superlative backgrounds) as they come off your painting table lol

Matt, you are amazing. Truly one of my favorite painters on this board! I am resisting your lure to follow you into this period. I did pick up the Congo rules earlier this summer, but have so far fought the urge to buy more stuff for it...
You, sir, are not helping! lol lol lol

You're too kind ;)
I just got in my first Congo game last Saturday. Good news is that it really doesn't take that many figures and it is pretty fun too :)
-
I love Congo!
Very inspiring and great work here!
I botched it this year. But we'll, I'll be back.
