Title: Galloping Major's Redcoats
Post by: Galloping Major on July 09, 2016, 11:50:19 AM
We're getting very close to "pushing the button" on our first ever Kickstarter project.

We hope our first Kickstarter project will be well received. If successful, we plan to continue releasing more troops for British and French armies alongside more North American participants for both sides – but at an increased pace. This all rests on your support.

When I set about creating our French & Indian War range, what I most wanted to build was the most comprehensive, well researched and engaging range of 28mm figures available for the period. We’re well on the way to that objective with our Mohawk and Huron Native Americans, Canadian Militia, Anglo-American Rangers, Armed Settlers, Militia and Provincials, along with our 18th Century Sailors; time now to take a big step forward as our first “regular” troops.

With your help through Kickstarter, we are hoping to take a big step forward, enabling the release of our British redcoat “hatmen” and command figures. Your support could enable us to make this release our biggest and most exciting to date and if successful, help to create a stronger platform for further releases.

As a small company relying on sales of existing packs to finance the release of new ones, we have so far been prevented from making new releases available to customers as quickly as we would like to. The high quality of our castings is frequently remarked upon by reviewers and customers alike, and that’s equally important to us, we don’t believe in increasing margins at the cost of “cutting corners”. Producing figures at this standard requires ongoing investment from us – but the results speak for themselves.

Where we have been able to make savings from the outset is that with all our figures being sculpted by me, unlike most miniatures companies we don’t have to raise fees for commercial sculptors, nor do we have to wait for their availability to work on our projects; this also guarantees consistency of style, quality, extensive research and attention to detail. The sculpting work has already been completed on most of the figures for this project and we’ve already invested in master castings for a good many of them. If enough of you will pledge your support we’ll be able to move forward promptly to completion for you.

Thanks for your interest  :)

Lance

Good question Nick, since I've not done any standard bearers up to now, but yes - there'll be two Ensigns in the first command pack  :o I'll put a picture up on here, I don't expect I'll get time to paint any more figures before I kick start the Kickstarter, so it'll have to be as grey painted master castings  :)

Cheers,
Lance

Maybe someone has size comparison including Galloping Major (anything, they're pretty constant in size) alongside Foundry and Crusader Brits?

What's the history of the style of bayonet drill these minis use?  Does that shoulder high attack style have a name ?  I know early style of bayonet fighting was based on using pikes, but I don't know any details.

That's right, direct develpment from pike drill, on the left: "Charge Your Bayonet" on the right, the follow up on contact with the enemy is "Push Your Bayonet". This was THE bayonet fighting technique of the period, only replaced by the later more familiar one with the changes of drill and uniform of the mid 1760s, although there is a mention of a battalion being ordered to hold the musket by the neck with the right hand at Quebec in 1759. It looks strange to those unfamiliar with it, but is surprisingly effective, especially in line - which was what it was designed for, and extends the reach considerably. I hope that helps?

Cheers,
Lance

Ready to pledge but just a question (the answer is not really important as I will make a pledge  :D):

Will there be two different command packs or just one? Another command pack is listed under the stretch goals as "British Line Infantry Command 2" but it has the same code (B4) as the pack in the initial stage 1 deals.

Hello
I'm looking over the pledge levels and can't find  one that fits what I want.
I like the Level 4 but want 3  packs of the 60th foot also.
Any of the higher levels have way too many commands than I need.
Is there any way to do individual packs as Add Ons? Croc Games did  this with their Wargods of Olympus KS so you could make customized units.
Thanks,Pete

Second command pack (unless I re-think it) will include at least 2 sergeants as well as ensigns etc.

I've pledged   :D

Any chance of some more photos detailing the actual pack contents (like those in your existing online store)? It would help when trying to work out what size/type units can be put together when combining the packs.

Well we're 98% of the way to our first goal, a big thanks for all the support, I think we'll get there and we now have 25 days to reach the stretch goal.  :D

Meanwhile, here's the first of those pack contents pics (almost complete)  :)
These chaps are meant to create added variety combined with troops from pack SYW/FIW B1 British Line Infantry Hat Company – Charge Your Bayonet (see below) or as a more battle-worn unit of their own.
The 4 variants in the main picture are left to right: bareheaded, flopped tricorn, cut down tricorn and cap made from old coat material.
The other two are leaning back to give extra impetus to the push of bayonet - their drill sergeant wouldn't like this but I hope you do  ;)

Concept art for Mounted Senior Officer - the stretch goal 2 Special Limited Release figure for the Redcoats Kickstarter. This Gent is the mounted version of the Senior Officer Limited Release figure for the Kickstarter first stage. I hope we get there - 12 days to go.

I am a little perplexed about which pledge to buy into.  I'd like to use the figures for Sharp Practice 2  and so need 36 to 40 figures. I will likely either have them formed up as one large unit of 2 ranks or two separate units of 2 ranks.

I would prefer  to get some variety in the figures rather than having a huge number of a single figure type, but it's unclear to me how the figures will mix to look like a realistic unit.   I'm guessing that if you buy one of each pack they would look very odd if you combine them into one unit.

I'm thinking maybe front rank charging and rear rank prepping to charge?   Is that even doable with any of these plugs levels? Anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve, 36-40 figures in one unit is a lot for skirmish games, will your redcoats be broken down into more than the 2 sub units?
If charging bayonets, under orders, all would be charged, then all would push; however, front rank pushing rear rank charging looks good, or a mix:
I prefer my regular units to look like they're all reacting to the same order as they are well drilled professionals, but a mix can look good too.
Have you thought of going for one unit as 60th Foot in volley, the other as a regiment with laced coats in a mix of push, charge and rest (I would keep these in groupings of the same giving 3 groups in the line - though I may have got the wrong end of the stick re your question.

What you can do, is work out the number of troops you want, see what that equates to in terms of a pledge, and back the nearest thing. I'm told that when the KS comes to an end backers are sent a "form" to confirm what they would like - you can change your mind at that point, substituting one thing for another.

I hope that helps but let me know if still unclear or feel free to PM me - I want to make sure everyone gets what they're looking for when pledging their support.
Cheers,
Lance

Just to let everyone know what the packs in the second set of stretch goals are:

SYW/FIW B9 British Line Infantry Hat Company – NCOs and characters

SYW/FIW B10 British Line Infantry Hat Company - skirmish line

FIW BRT3 British Regular Infantry 60th Foot Hat Company 3 - NCOs and characters

FIW BRT4 British Regular Infantry 60th Foot Hat Company 4 - skirmish line

NCOs will be mostly sergeants, as there are none in the command packs; packs SYW/FIW B1, B2 and B3 and FIW BRT1 will each contain a corporal in the same action as the men.

Thanks again,
Lance  :)

If anyone's thinking of pledging and not done so yet, now would be a good time to do so - it's getting close to stretch goal #2 so hopefully with a few more backers and some increased pledges well get access to a whole lot more of Lance's great figures.

Lance,  any sketches or other info on what the BRT American 60th Foot packs will look like ?   You posted pics of some of the BRT1 minis.   Will the BRT1 pack be 50/50 standing and kneeling ?  How about the BRT2 pack ?

Also on the 60th foot, in layman's terms what's the differnece between the uniforms of the 60th and home raised regiments ?   Is it just less lace ?

Thanks for asking RC Robert. BRT1 pack will be 50/50 kneeling/standing. BRT2 pack will also be 50/50 kneeling/standing - some will be wearing the issued mitasses (Indian leggings) others carrying more equipment to give added variety.

If we make stretch goal 2 (at time of writing less than £1000 to go and 10 days to do it in) BRT3 and BRT4 will have more varied poses   :)

Re 60th Foot uniforms, yes, coats are not laced, these figures also don't carry swords. These figures could also be painted as H.M. Independent Companies of Foot (Red coats and small clothes faced green, no lace).  8)

7 days to go on the Redcoats Kickstarter and we have less that £650 to go to get to the 2nd stretch goals, which are:

SYW/FIW B9 British Line Infantry Hat Company – NCOs and characters

SYW/FIW B10 British Line Infantry Hat Company - skirmish line

FIW BRT3 British Regular Infantry 60th Foot Hat Company 3 - NCOs and characters

FIW BRT4 British Regular Infantry 60th Foot Hat Company 4 - skirmish line

REDCOATS KICKSTARTER UPDATE
Only 3 days to go and we're just £400 over our second stretch goal, but we can't feel safe yet, as this is the time when the casually interested "backers" drop out. So if there's anything you were considering pledging against but haven't done it yet, packs of figures, a T-shirt, please look again now and help us to get this great collection of British hatmen into production.  :D
We've also added in flags for those ensigns as an add-on.  8)

No, you're not. All you need to do is hit the manage your pledge button and just add the T shirt cost to your pledge level increasing the amount. At the end of the Kickstarter there will be a form to complete which you just add what you have ordered.

I hope that makes sense.

Meanwhile, just for interest, here's a figure from the first pack painted as a soldier of the 58th Regt, I thought the black facings and yellow lace would make a nice contrast with the other regiments for my collection.

No problem Andy, it's nothing so smart as you might think; they're hat men, as most companies in a battalion were, to differentiate them from the grenadier companies - in mires - and (starting from the SYW/FIW) the light companies - in caps. They became referred to later as "centre companies" as the grenadier and light companies traditionally formed up at either end of a battalion.

It still happens today in the British Army, elite soldiers rather disparagingly refer to other squaddies as 'hats'!

What would be a good combination of packs for a 24 man unit of hatmen in two ranks charging and the same question for a unit firing? I especially have trouble picturing what the charging unit would look like with the various charge stances. I need them for Sharp Practice.

Got my figures for 60th Foot, very good quality, very pleased with them, very little preparation is needed so after a quick wash I am now painting them.

Redcoats as reviewed in French language Wargames Magazine VaeVictis, figures beautifully painted by Christophe Coquet.

Great stuff! Are there going to be photos of the redcoats available in the store eventually? Would be nice to be able to see what I'm buying.   Personally I think unpainted miniatures are better than nothing if that's the issue...

No Sir, not a painted v unpainted thing but time related due to other pressing stuff (I've long since admitted to myself that I won't find time to paint them all soon enough - pictures of full pack content painted up by any customers would be appreciated to fill in though  ;)).
Sorry about the delay, I'm planning some more pictures of unpainted stuff soon to get full packs onto the online shop, meanwhile, here are a few pics:

All these and other bits are on the Studio page of the website, sorry they're incomplete and not up-to-date. I'll try to get more pics into the shop during the weekend. I do appreciate how pictures of pack content help with planning units  :)
Cheers,
Lance

Sorry the pictures are so small folks, I used the ones from the shop page on the website, but I could only copy the addresses from the small ones, to check any out larger, go to the online shop page and click on the thumbnail pics  :)

Meanwhile, I can show pack SYW/FIW B10 at a better size  :D

Customer Gareth Tilley recently asked on our facebook page (galloping Major Ltd Wargames) for any tips about painting Redcoat red, I've been asked this sort of question several times, so thought I should share this here.

I use a lot of the original Foundry colours, alongside various others including Humbrol, Games Workshop, Vallejo etc. If you think my painting of Redcoat soldiers' clothing isn't too far off the mark, you might like to try this one out. I normally start from a dark base coat and work up through mid tones to highlights these days, but just for Redcoats I've returned to my old style of mid tone base, then painting in shade and highlights over this. The thing that sparked this was, as I'm always on the lookout for interesting paints, I spotted the pot pictured in a range of acrylics stocked by "The Range" stores in their craft (not fine art) department and bought one to try out. They contain about twice as much paint as most manufacturers' for, if I remember correctly, £1.99. I tried it, liked it, and bought several more colours from the fairly limited range. They give a good flat coverage, with the red "rouge" I start with a couple of thin coats. I then shade Foundry Conker Brown Shade (I use Citadel Scab Red to shade officers' coats); I then highlight with Foundry Scarlet Light with another highlight of Foundry Bright Red Light. Obviously, similar shade and highlight colours from your favoured range should work just as well. The thing I like about this Artiste rouge is it is a good strong red without being overly lurid, and has that hint of 'brickishness' about it that really does give the look of a military red coat. Worth a try for anyone who is (like I was) hesitating about what red to uniform their regulars in.
Cheers, Lance.
