I'm well aware there was probably only the one documented in Libya in 1942 but you know how it is with such things...
In the end who does really know what actually was around unofficially at lower unit levels back then?

Despite the danger to bore you to death with my Fallschirmjäger I painted up another eight men section. Figures are again almost exclusively the brilliant metal Fallschirmjäger sculpted by Paul Hicks (thank you very much for the kind comment btw.). Only the two prone MG-42 gunners are Heer miniatures from Artizan. The gunner got "fallschirmjägerized" with a new head from the plastic Fallschirmjäger. I didn't bother to do the same with the loader as he's sporting camouflage on his helmet anyway.

I don't see that you ever solved your question of a recipe for field grey at the browner end of the spectrum. To my eye, I think Vallejo English Uniform may be a suitable base color, with green grey added for highlights. Maybe worth a shot if you return to standard heer troops?

Despite some rather busy weeks at work I've still managed to continue work on my my Fallschirmjäger platoon in the form of some more support weapons. The Fallschirmjäger list released in the "Duel in the sun" supplement for Bolt Action doesn't allow for support in form of vehicles and heavier anti-tank guns than the odd 3,7cm PaK 36 or schwere Panzerbüchse 41. Thus when wanting to field this list I'm rather limited when it comes to anti-tank capability. At least till the new Armies of Germany supplement for Bolt Action 2nd Edition is released in November that is.

As there's currently no PaK 36 with Fallschirmjäger crew out there, at least none I'm aware of, the choice for my anti-tank gun obviously fell on the tiny schwere Panzerbüchse 41 I already mounted on my captured Bren carrier. While it's just a small anti-tank gun in Bolt Action terms it still does pack some punch due to the "Squeeze-bore" special rule. At ranges below 12" its PEN value is increased to +6 giving it the theoretical chance of taking on even the heaviest of allied and russian tanks.

Of course there is also a drawback to this weapon in the form of its limited use at longe range as its PEN is reduced by two instead the usual one when firing at over half range. The rules only does give you a crew of two for this weapon but as Warlord Game sell these with three figures to a pack I felt the visual effect of a bigger crew was well worth the extra work.

If I'm not completely mistaken only the kneeling figure actually was sculpted by Paul Hicks while the other two were sculpted by someone else who, quite successful to be honest, tried to emulate Mr Hicks' style. These two figures also came with separate heads I replaced with some from the plastic Fallschirmjäger as the faces were in Warlord Games' more comical style which is definitely not my cup of tea.

Next in line is my sniper team. These too seem to be no Paul Hicks sculpts but still painted up quite nicely. Here too I replaced the separate head supplied with one of the figures with one from plastic. Actually I quite like how he (the prone guy) now seems to talk to his comrade in low voice.

While snipers are rather useful in Bolt Action that's not the reason I almost never field a force without one. It's just the fact snipers are cool! I guess most of you will have seen the movie "Enemy at the gates" so no further explanation is necessary I think. for all of you who don't but do have only a passing interest in WW2 I strongly recommend you give it a shot.

And last but not least a weapon of rather cruel reputation: The flamethrower. The figure usually comes with flames coming out the barrel but I don't like the look of such sculpted on effects and thus decided to simply cut it off. Again the flamethrower guys head was swapped for a plastic one while the SMG gunner recieved a captured russian PPSH 41 instead of his MP40.

@Captain Blood: Me neither, but imho there's not much choice when it comes to nice Soviet sculpts. The Eureka ones are rather nice, but the price is quite prohibitive.

@rha.celt: Oh well, that's not as bad as it seems ;) I only have one regular opponent who's an highly accomplished painter himself. Thus we both are fully aware of how much time it takes to paint our stuff and thus we usually handle our toys with utmost care.

First off is a 'liberated' M8 Greyhound to be used (as all the other vehicles in this post in fact) with my Fallschirmjäger force.

I simply love to use Beutepanzer and Beutefahrzeuge (loot tanks/ vehicles) with my Germans as it gives you a chance to model something 'unique' and tailor it to your own force.

This model is from Warlord Games and is quite a nice kit. Only the suspension is a little fickly, which is the reasons why this model got a base. I cut off the skirts and swapped some of the original kits wheels for some from a Warlord Sd.Kfz. 222.

I was quite sure to have seen pictures of captured M8's with exactly this modification, but alas I must have dreamed it.
Be that as it may, I also added some stowage and a crew figure to further 'germanize' the vehicle. The original, rather thick antennas were substituted with thin broom bristles.

Next is an early production StuG III from Rubicon Models. Not much to say about this one, except that it went together nicely. The tank commander is from Perry Miniatures.

Next in the queue is a StuH 42 (short for Sturmhaubitze or Assault howitzer). This actually is a bastard made from a Warlord Games StuG III and the Rubicon StuG. It started life as a straight out of the box StuG III. I think it was during the one before the last challenge that I messed up the paint job that badly that I almost threw it in the bin. Some time last year, when I built the Rubicon StuG, I decided to strip it and give it another try.
During the stripping process I damaged some of the parts badly. As the Rubicon kit comes with quite some options I hadn't used I carefully disassembled the Warlord kit.
First the 7,5-cm-StuK 40/L48 gun of the stock kit was replaced with the 10,5-cm-StuH 42 with Saukopfblende from Rubicon. Later the roof of the fighting compartment was carefully cut away and replaced with the corresponding Rubicon part. I actually preferred that one anyway as it has the typical very late war remote controlled MG-34 and a Stahlabweiser (literally steel deflector) in front of the command cupola.
Next I cut up the Schürzen of the kit and re-applied them in a field mod common later in the war.
Last but not least I added the rear stowage rack from Rubicon.

Last of the vehicles is the Opel Blitz, which is a Rubicon kit again. Already owning a pair of Warlords Resin version of this vehicle I've got to say what a beauty the Rubicon kit is, both in ease of assembly and accuracy. I didn't really invest much time into painting the cargo bed as I'll add some passengers at a later point.

Last but by no means least are some markers I built for Chain of Command. These are so called 'Jump off points' and in effect are the entry points for my troops to enter the table. They were built using various bits and pieces from the bits-box, but mainly Rubicon models American and German stowage kits.

Well, today let's talk some Italian for a change. Over the last months I've been painting away on a small Italian unit for fellow Blogger Pat, well known through his blog -Wargaming with Silver Whistle- (http://wargamingwithsilverwhistle.blogspot.com/) and Author of the rather excellent "Setting the Scene: Winter Wargaming" (http://wargamingwithsilverwhistle.blogspot.com/2018/01/setting-scene-books-are-on-their-way-at.html).
Right now he's working on a second book focusing on the Mediterranean. I've painted a few figures previously for him which featured in his first book and as he asked me if I'd like to paint something for his upcoming book I took the chance to help the Regio Esercito Italiano to "their place in the sun".

Regio Esercito Italiano (ital. Royal army of Italy) was the official name for the armed forces of Italy from 1861 till the declaration of the Italian Republic in 1946. Italy was the largest ally of Germany during WW2 and as such Italians saw service not only in the desert against the British, but also on the Balkans, in Greece and on the eastern front. As such they're an ideal force for an Axis player to collect when you want something different.
As a bonus, Italian uniform and equipment changed little between 1936 and 1943 and as such you can easily field most of your WW2 Italians in a game set in the Spanish Civil War too.

In my opinion the Italian Army has seen more than their fair share of bad press ever since their ill fated invasion of Egypt in 1940. After their impressive successes during Operation Compass the British regarded the Italian soldier with little more than contempt, while the Germans and Rommel in particular were only too happy to blame them for everything that went wrong. When an operation didn't achieve it's objectives or failed completely and the Italians were involved it was mostly blamed on their performance. Sometimes rightfully, but most often they were just a scape goat. As such it's little wonder that even today you hear little positive about the Italian involvement in WW2.

While the Afrika Korps generally gets all the fame, it's only over the last few years that historians started to approach the Italians with more fairness. When judging the Italian army and its performance one should never forget Mussolini himself thought his army ill prepared for a major war till at least 1943. But impressed by Germanys early successes he wanted part of the spoils for himself and Italy.

On paper Italian strength seemed impressive with three divisions of National Security Militia (MVSN), five mountain divisions as well as three mobile and two tank divisions in addition to the 59 divisions of infantry. And that's not taking into account several divisions of Frontier Guards and colonial units.
In reality though many formations weren't up to their full strength, and even if they were an Italian Divisions fighting strength was hardly comparable to that of other nations divisions.

In a bid to impress the world with the strength of its army, Italian divisions were organized in the so called "Binary divisions". As the name suggests instead of the more common three regiments of other armies, the Italian infantry division was made up of only two regiments. In addition to these two regiments there was also an Artillery regiment, an engineer batallion and a mortar batallion included in an Italian Division.

To further hamper the Italians performance, Italy never was a country rich of raw materiel needed to wage a modern war on a grand scale. The vast oil reserves in Italian controlled Libya were not yet discovered and even basic goods like coal, rubber and steel, had to be imported for its war efforts. As such Mussolini was desperate to secure himself a part of the cake which was to be divided once Germany had inevitably won the war.

Yet another reason for the mixed combat record of Italian armies lay with the corruption imminent to the fascist regime. While the German Generalstab had its fair share of 'spittle lickers' and political opportunists, its members generally had earned their place within it through competence and good leadership. Contrary to that Italian commanders often were not promoted to their ranks through merit but through connections in the fascist party. This led to many of the Italians defeats during the war.

But despite popular believe the Italians were anything but mere cowards or at best incompetents. Some of their major defeats in the desert the British suffered at the hands of the Italian army. Italian artillery gunners for example were well known for their stubbornness in facing British attacks and often only left their positions when virtually overrun by sheer weight of numbers.
It was the Italians in the form of the Ariete armoured division and a division of Bersaglieri (the 8th) who were at the spearhead of the DAK at the battle of Benghazi or the capture of the British fortress of Mechili. While often credited to the German 90th light Division, the capture of the British fortress of Mersa Matruh was only possible through Italian gunners who stuck to their guns in the face of heavy attacks by air. These were just a few examples of Italian fighting prowess and many more are recorded like the rearguard actions during the Tunisian campaign which finally saw huge numbers of Italians left to their fate by the Germans while those were desperate to withdraw their main forces to Sicily.

While throughout the war Italian units often were of mixed quality, the common soldier was often courageous and not better or worse than its German, British, American or Russian counterparts. It was mostly the disastrous political and military leadership which led to Italian defeats and thus to the popular image of Italian soldiers surrendering en masse to the Allies.

Truth be told I didn't really enjoy painting these Perry castings as they were, like most Perry metals, of poor quality. Nonetheless I'm quite pleased with how they turned out and I hope they will encourage the one or other prospective reader of Pat's upcoming next masterpiece to maybe collect an Italian force of their own.

In the course of my research for my Abyssinians, I also dealt with the Italian army, and I therefore fully agree with you that the Italian soldiers have historically been treated unfairly until now.

As you say - referring to the soldiers themselves, they were no worse or better than their allies, or adversaries.
As usual, the problem were the higher commands.

Continuing on with my Panzergrau phase todays offering is a early StuG D. While the diminutive Panzer I's and Panzer II's or their larger brethren the Panzer III's and IV's all have their individual appeal it's always been the StuG which impressed me the most. With its small shilouette and the boxy shape it simply looks both futuristic and menacing. And a StuG in the dark Panzergrau livery of the early days of WW2 is simply the king of 'Bad Ass'... in my books anyway.

Cudos for the file has to go to deweyecatproductions over on https://www.wargaming3d.com (https://www.wargaming3d.com). It has some minor inaccuracies (i.e. missing headlights and antennae as well as the spare wheels which don't really look like the real thing), but apart from that an excellent vehicle and a joy to paint. I used some pieces from the bits box to add a little detail as well as adding the missing headlights and antennae.

This "beast" has taken me quite a while. Several changes in real life (tm) and a general lack of hobby MoJo kept getting in the way of its completion but now it's finished I'm rather chuffed with how it turned out.

The tank itself is by Warlord Games with some stowage made from Green Stuff and from Rubicon Models and Tamiya. The tank commander was sourced from Perry Miniatures.

The Carro Armato M13/40 was developed as a medium tank (the M in its name stands for "Medium"), albeit being better comparable to the light tanks of the period. It was intended as a successor to the M11/39 with which it shared an almost identical lower hull section with slightly improved armour. It was first deployed in the ill fated attack on Greece and the fighting in North Africa. While not a bad tank when it was introduced it soon became obsolete due to the riveted construction, its relatively low speed and the inability to be equipped with a bigger gun.

The M13/40 was never deployed to the Soviet Union with the bulk of the production being shipped to North Africa and a few sent to the Balkans. They were also not employed in the defense of Sicily during Operation Husky. After the Italian surrender some M13/40 and its successors, the M14/41 as well as the M15/42 - only a hand full of the latter saw limited use by the Italians against German forces around Rome in 1943 - were used by the Germans in Yugoslavia and mainland Italy mainly in an anti-partisan role.

As it is this iconic tank is of little use for my Italian project as I'm centering my efforts mainly around Sicily and Operation Husky. But who knows? It might see use against Italys former allies in the defense of Rome, or I might at some point even start a project set in North Africa or the fighting in the Tunisian bridgehead.

I’m not sure if you’ve already done any Italian CTV for your SCW collection but, as you probably already know, quite a few Italians protecting Sicily’s coast wore Adrian helmets. Gives you some nice variety and allows some useful cross-use.

One thing about your figures is the level of contrast, which is dialled up way higher than I would use, but it really works, for example on the English Uniform trousers on the para.

@poiter: The car is a 3D print and as of yet not commercially available. The tarp was added by me to hide a flaw in the print :D

@Shahbaraz: You're perfectly right. I like my figures to 'pop' even if this means to go for high contrast and maybe less historical authenticity. That said I use way less contrast nowadays than I did a few years back.

@Hang Tuah: I've added a few new guides to the blog over the last few weeks, so you might want to have a look? ;)
As for the Foundry era Perry figures: Well, first of all the caster doesn't suck as much as the one the twins are using nowadays. And second the figures are sculpted much cleaner, with less rough edges. Just looking at the faces they used to sculpt and how they do it nowadays makes me instantly want to toss their newer stuff in the bin. As our esteemed Captain Blood once put it (and I'm paraphrasing here as I can't find the exact wording atm):

I can't pick a favourite but, if forced, I reckon the Puma might be it. The tones on that, along with the really well thought out stowage colours, are just perfect.

Illustrates very nicely why I visit your blog on average several times a week :-)
