Got another Napoleonic commission to do and this one's in 28mm :)
The client has gone for 3-4 building bases all about 300mm x 450mm but these dimensions could change depending.
First picture is of the first two roof plans. The details of the buildings will be fairly generic and easy to imagine so I thought it would be more important to get the layout sorted first.
Here is the base board with the buildings pencilled in place, the sabot base is 45mm x 67mm and those are unpainted Austrians (that will get a lick of paint eventually).
And here we go with the first building. It's the smaller one at the back and is fairly generic but there will be plenty of details to make it look less boring as the build progresses.

The roof will make more sense as more is done to it :)
cheers
James
-
Nice looking project...and I love those Austrians, who did you get those magnificent figs from??? :D
-
Dunno, but they're a shit to put together lol
The backpacks really don't fit at all but they'll paint up just fine :)
cheers
James
-
Pretty much finished the timber work on the upper floors for this building. A few more details on the lower story and it'll be ready to paint :)
I've kept the timber work fairly simple on this one, the larger building to the front (this building is at the 'back' of the base) will have more decorative timbering.

cheers
James

The figures look like Victrix Austrians to me, you can run more glue into the joints to fill in the gaps. These buildings are inspiring, Aspern Essling and Auerstadt are two battles I,ve always fancied covering , but alas, my collection is 28mm and 15's or smaller is the only practical solution..... I,ll follow this thread with interest.
-
Great looking buildings, they should look wonderful when complete. ;D
The figures look kewl as well, where did you get them from ??? :D
-
Looking good so far
-
Thank chaps :)
The figures are indeed Victrix Austrians.
cheers
James
-
great start...love your building projects
-
Looking good so far.
:-* :-*
(But I aint looking no more in case I get the idea to build some shit myself...)
-
very good start ! What did you use for timbering ? Matchsticks?
-
Looking good Jim
-
Thanks again gents :)
The wood is 1mm thick balsa wood cut into 2mm strips with other sizes used as and when.
cheers
James
-
Primed the first building and got the roof structure done. The lines are there to help position the tile strips. Should be able to start painting this tonight :)
cheers
James
-
That looks rather splendid :)
-
Impressive... :o
Cant wait to see the paint on it....:)
DV
-
Well, I've started the painting proper and the wall 'panels' are done but I'm masking them out so I can spray the timber (this is the quickest way of doing it really).
You can see the first four panels have has the masking tape cut and stuck in place,it shouldn't take too long to do the rest.
cheers
James
-
And here's the finished result after masking, spraying and drybrushing. I've also added the joist peg holes for that extra level of detail. I'll take some better photos once the roof is done and the windows need blanking out on the rear of them.

James

Missed this before 8)
Rather good! ;) :-*
-
Impressive as ever, James :)
-
That is looking lovely, mate, but I still cannot see how you are going to fit it into Mos Eisley.
;D ;D
Mos Essling, perhaps...?
-
Looks excellent, the masking technique looks very useful.
-
Thanks chaps :)
Got the first building done (apart from doors, shutters and window blanks) and so I'll move onto the 'compound' walls next and then onto the big building.

There will be more weathering once the buildings are stuck in place and there will also be bit and bobs like barrels, washing lines etc. All those god things that'll make it looked lived in :)
Mos Essling, perhaps...?
Nah, it'll be Mos Vegas ;)
cheers
James
-
:-* Looks great james!!
-
Looking great, can't wait to see the courtyard. ;D
-
Now I've had my little bit of Star Wars fun it's back to some more serious work :)
The smaller building is complete now and stuck on it's base and I've got the courtyard walls down along with the larger building and stables roughed out.

The stables will either be brick or stone and there will also be a timbered framed bit on the side where you can see the scribbling. Haven't fully decided on the roof yet but I think there'll be a few dormers. Only the courtyard walls and existing building are stuck for now as it's easier to work on the buildings when they are loose.
More to follow soon :)
cheers
James
-
That's going to look spectacular ;D
-
Lovely work Jim :-* :-* :-*
The roof colour is amazing.
Does the masking tape not damage the walls when you remove it?
-
Thanks gents :)
Colin, it's low-tac stuff I get from Japan but I'm pretty sure you can get it here as well. It's mainly for plastic model kits etc.
cheers
James
-
Oh you mean the expensive stuff rather than the cheapo stuff I get from work :D
-
Sublime colours and weathering on the walls and roof there James.
Jolly Nice!
-
Oh you mean the expensive stuff rather than the cheapo stuff I get from work :D
Yup, although it's fairly cheap over there (plastic modelling being a massive hobby).
cheers
James
-
really neat progress
-
Beautfiul work - looking forward to seeing it progress :D
-
Got some more done on building two, all the stone work. A few more details and then I'll be able to paint it. The roof is yet to be designed yet and I might do dormers on it.

Busy times again Jim?

Busy times again Jim?
Always mate, always ;)
cheers
James

That really is most impressive.
8)
Will that be an open archway at the bottom or a massive door?
Busy times again Jim?
Always mate, always ;)
Yep. He was REALLY busy this afternoon.
;D
-
Will that be an open archway at the bottom or a massive door?
Yep. He was REALLY busy this afternoon.
;D
Open archway and there's nothing wrong with a few pints here and there ;D
cheers
James
-
You must be an octopus!! :o All these projects on the go at one time!
Are you using plastic card for the corners? It doesn't look like you've cut separate quoins this time?
-
Cheers mate, I seem to work better doing a little bit here and a little bit there, otherwise I get bored on the same thing.
The material is called Rowmark and it's a cross between styrene and acrylic. Styrene doesn't laser very well and this material is softer than acrylic and so is a good compromise :)
cheers
James
-
looking very good indeed
-
Thanks Tom :)
Got the main building roof structure sorted now.

I'll hopefully get the tower timbered tonight.
cheers
James

Looking totally grand :-*
-
Love it. :-*
-
Thanks chaps :)

James

This is looking very good.
Do you mind me asking how you did the tiles on the first build, they look to be strips partly cut through. Did you make them or are they commercial?
Same question for the rounded tiles down the edges of the roof.
The roof on the tower is going to be spectacular, did you calculate the angles or trial and error to get the fit?
Cheers
-
Thank you :)
The tiles are commercial and from here at the bottom http://www.oshiromodelterrain.co.uk/victorianbuildings.html (http://www.oshiromodelterrain.co.uk/victorianbuildings.html) send me an email though if you're after some. I can do custom tiles as well :)
The tower roof was trail and error but I managed to get it right first time (practise mainly).
cheers
James
-
really nice indeed
-
Some great shapes in that build Jim :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
I am sure it will be stunning when all finished and painted up
-
great achievement :-*
-
Man this looks so great again !
-
James, it is good work. Maybe you should make mounds and do it in resin...
-
Why do you have to make it all look so so easy? Great work!
-
Many thanks for the replies gents :)
Maybe you should make mounds and do it in resin...
lol Not a chance ;D
Got some paint onto the main building and there's a couple of photos of the masking process which (to me at any rate) is more preferable than hand painting. There's still some weathering and shading to do but that'll be done when it's all together.

And here's with the paint on and masking off :)

There's still a few 'build' elements to go on, such as steps to doors and remaining timbering etc but the main build work is complete.
cheers
James
-
Very nice work again :-* :-* :-*
Not so sure about the pink though But I am sure it will look great when finished
-
You have some really neat touches on this. :o :o
The coping stones on the wall are great are the oshiro? Are the grid's in the window embroidery mesh or do you have something else.
You need to do the tower roof next, that's what I am waiting for :)
I looked at your site and found the roofing tiles but not the rounded ridge tiles are they part of a set?
Cheers
-
Thanks chaps :)
Colin, pink seemed to be a widely used colour for render on buildings like this and even timber framed ones in England. It's just a whitening down of a natural red.
Vagabond, drop me an email regarding the scalloped tiles, I have them, they are just not on the site yet. The coping stones were done at work on the table saw and the window frames are cut on the laser. I can do these bits (and other things) as custom work if you're interested?
cheers
James
-
Its coming together nicely. ;D
-
looking very good indeed
-
Darn, I'm lucky to get on board with this build at this stage and not to miss it all!
The first building alone would be a nice scenic centre piece on any board but the whole complex will be so awesome, love the overall look quite a deal! Do you have a set dead-line with the build, how long must we wait to see it all finished?! :D
-
Cheers again fellas :)

Looking good, mate.
Love the variation in shades.

It's really coming together now and I love the weathering :D

Took a little break from this one but back on it now. Only a small update but there will be bigger ones soon :)
The little side shed is complete and next will be the stucco on the yard walls.

Mad skills.

Stunning!
-
Cheers fellas :)
The main roof is almost done and hopefully I should get it done tonight (including the painting) but it's dinner time now so it semed like a good place to stop and post :)
The window frames are lasered and they have balsa wood stuck round them.
The spaces for the four dormers were worked out and the first set of inbetween tiles were stuck down.

Each dormer had the side walls stuck on and then they were stuck in place alternating with the inbetween tiles.
