Will it be possible to just buy the props, without the furniture and rooms? Because all those skeletons and old urns would make great details in an ancient tomb or as a Plot Point.

Yes, you will be able to buy just props, or just furniture.
However, not the pieces in the photos... .... the accessories in these photos are from my bits box, the sculptor is still busy with these!

As soon as he has some greens to share I'll post them. Their will be enough artifacts to fill all of the display cases.

Here's an overview of the Museum.
For versatility / flexibility / value for money, we have designed Rick's Cafe as the core part of the range. The terra-blocks from Rick's Cafe set are then rearranged with a few additional blocks that make up the add on to transform them into either the Museum, The Riad or The Souk.

Here's an overall photo of the Museum which is constructed from Rick's Cafe set plus the additional pieces from the Museum add-on.

Great! Any chance you could tell us the estimated cost of the basic pledge and the additional blocks to transform the cafe?

We will let you know costs as soon as they are finalised... still got 10 days to ge before we launch Kickstarter.
Ann is doing a test build of all the frets today as final QA, we will then run through our costing algorithm and let you know.

... and yes, he is a very happy dinosaur, he's ended up in a great museum! I think it must be the angle of the photograph!

Gorgeous setup! Almost looks as fun as a real museum! :D
What immediately strikes me is how well this lends itself to a horror setting. Maybe I've been permanently influenced by the book Relic, but horror inside of museums is a sorely underused concept. That or I just don't get out that often. XD

Regardless, well done! More pics por favor!

Fantastic!  I received my first sets of terra blocks a couple of weeks ago, and I'm really impressed with the concept and the execution.  So I just ordered some more.  As much as I wish there was a stateside vendor, I have to admit that ordering from your UK storefront was a great experience...fast service, quick delivery, and everything in good order.
Continue to excel!

A first look at Rick's Cafe set.
This is the core building for the Exotic Location range. The Museum, Souk and Riad all use the pieces from this kit plus additional pieces.

I think it is useful for a wide range of gaming genres, some of which I have photograped and will share with you over the next couple of weeks.

Clear bases have become our No 1, best seller, we ship hundreds and hundreds out every week.
It just makes perfect sense. You could have beautiful diorama bases, but if they do not match the terrain the figures are standing on they look daft, so my regiments of 6 Napoleonic's based 40 to a base will be always be flocked green as 90% of the time they will be deployed on green terrain, but single figures will be on clear bases so they blend in.

Indeed! Clear bases are the way to go. And it looks like most of these are 20mm bases.

Clear 20mm bases are definitely my favorite.

Interesting stuff, I've been considering a museum board for quite a long time.

I like clear bases in theory, but I can't stand taking the time and energy to saw off integral bases.
Title: Re: Exotic Location Sets
Post by: Chris Abbey on 25 October 2016, 06:36:14 PM
You do not need to saw base off. I clip the metal base off with Games Workshop yellow handled clippers (other brands are available). I clip around the feet, remove the plinth, then clip across the foot, a quick file. Job done.
I doubt it takes a minute a figure. I certainly could not apply plaster, sand and flock in the time it takes to cut off plinth and glue to a clear base.

Oh yes! The clear bases are also a big time saver. I remember all the crap we went through on the old bases. Now it is just snip, snip, glue.

But clear bases are not going to be everyone's choice. I love being able to easily use the same model in a city, sewer, jungle, desert, arctic, or wherever. Because that is our style of play. Today it is Topeka, tomorrow its Tangiers.  ;)

Some bases are alot harder to remove, but most take less than a minute. Slotted-base miniatures are my favorite. Those are so fast and easy. That is why all the Pulp Alley figures are made for slotted bases -- not because we actually use slotted bases.

Going back and re-basing a couple hundred miniatures was rather daunting - but Mila took care of all that for us. I definitely had my reservations about doing the switch, but now I could not be happier.  :D

Yes I love the clear base idea BUT as a long time collector basing is a big issue. I decided long ago on a base style and have determined to make it standard across my collection. There have been just a few times I have tried something different and in the end I generally wish I had not done it. If I were starting today though I would do clear bases. :?

On the colorless base issue--aside from the work of re-basing old minis--all my minis have magnetic bottoms. I either use round stick-on magnets from Litko (opaque ones, obviously) or drill holes in wooden bases and insert 1/8th inch rare earth magnets. Or stick magnets on the bottom of slotta bases with green stuff. I think it's the safest way for transport, but my hodge podge of different styles of bases is definitely pretty shoddy looking.
Title: Re: Exotic Location Sets
Post by: Chris Abbey on 27 October 2016, 09:32:49 PM
I have done some clear magnetic bases, by gluing figure to base then drilling hole under foot and inserting 3mm rare earth magnet.
Title: Re: Exotic Location Sets
Post by: ragsthetiger on 28 October 2016, 12:26:47 AM
I purchased some clear bases, but have been reluctant to try them.  For one thing, I have hundreds of painted minis and re-basing them all is a total nonstarter at this late date.   Also, my fading eyesight and increasingly shaky hands have made all painting a slow and painful process, and I'm worried about ruining my efforts trying to base them.  One false move with the snippers or a smeared drop of glue and the whole mini could be ruined.  I've thought about practicing on some unimportant minis, but these days I don't paint any unimportant minis.  Guess I'll stick with what I know.

I've just tried it after reading your message. Brilliant ! How comes I've never thought of it ? I have no problem putting effort into a miniature, but when it comes to make a base it's a total different subject. It's a part of the miniature painting process that I'm not fond of.

We were ready to go live a week ago. If they get issue resolved and we go live in next week we will proceed as planned and run kick-starter to complete on 1st December.

The Museum Props pack can also be used with the Souk or Market Place set to represent unscrupulous black market peddlers of antiquities. Not that our heroes would want to get involved with anything as despicable as this, "this piece should be in a museum"!

Title: Re: Exotic Location Sets

They've been designed to be  multipurpose .
For example the larger items all fit in the glass cabinet or will work as floor displays ,and on the open top units. The displays for the smaller glass cabinet work in a similar way with the addition option of wall mounting two of them.
The stand of shields works in a similar way as there is a simple rack behind them.now you can have them on a low table,on top of the bookcase .Then by simply removing the base the make a wall mountable display .Alternatively a simple cut between each shield will turn them into three plot point markers.
The three bookshelf items are designed to fit in the shelves as in the picture .They are also intended to be free standing on table tops ,and they will also function as wall mounted items without conversion .
The statues/ busts are plot points as well as exhibits ,they are designed to fit on to the large produce item(Chris hasn't posted images of these yet) to make your market look even more exotic and to make the plot points part of the setting.
As mentioned the museum set is intended to cross over into the market or souk.Giving more story lines and flavour to the settings.
In addition two of the produce items are intended to cross over as museum displays giving you additional options.
By combining the shelving items and or the busts with the tables and market stalls ,and the museum crates.you can create an archeological dig setting.
The souk set has two styles of  cushion floor seats and loose cushions. Combine these with the open fronted market stalls and you have seating for a Sultans pleasure garden.
There is also an electric fan which can be constructed in several ways as an industrial free standing item or as a lighter two part table top fan, both versions can also be wall mounted to represent ceiling fans. You can also make a security camera by simply not attaching the fan blades/ head to the motor body of the heavier industrial looking fan. This can be freestanding or wall mounted and the 'camera ' can be Constructed at different angles to give a more big brother feel to your settings.
My intention was to design items that aren't one trick ponies, and make items that give value for money by being able to be used with the Exotic location sets ,and be used in other games and settings without the need for major conversion or kit bashing.
I've no doubt you'll find more inventive ways to use them.,than I've designed them for :D
Mark.

Mark has done an excellent job sculpting the 'props' for Exotic Locations. This combination of building, furniture and detailed castings is one that we are looking to adopt for future projects and we are already talking to Mark about getting started on the next one.

I was planning to post a photo each day, to make them last, but as Mark has posted such a great description of the other pieces, I'd best add the photos to go with them.

What do you think?
Is this the best option for Ilsa Lund in 28mm, or do you know of a better miniature to use?

I personally don't like that miniature's face, but the outfit and side-tilted hat are practically perfect; you can keep the body and hat and swap the head for one of the Statuesques', IMHO!  ;)

Some lovely detailed items there
My only issue is the way some things have been cast. How difficult will it be to remove the fan from the flash?
Title: Re: Exotic Location Sets
Post by: Chris Abbey on 07 December 2016, 07:33:05 PM
I'll tell you tomorrow!
I don't think it will be a problem, though. Mark designed them that way (on pull's), so not strictly speaking 'flash'.
The resin is very 'plasticy' so I think it will cut. I received some really detailed resin terrain (and heads) from another company that were done the same way, and they certainly cut apart easily.

Two options really. If you have not pledged yet, just add up what the pledge, i.e. 'All In' plus the extra comes to and enter that amount. Second option is just to pledge amount for main 'pledge', then when I send out the pledge manager spreadsheet next week you can add any extras in and I will just send Paypal invoices out for any difference.

I've just put together the snake in snake charming basket and the vintage fan from our exotic location set, to check out how easy material is to work with.

It was very easy, it is a soft plastic type of resin which can be cut with clippers or knife and files easily. It also glues together easily with superglue.

Basket can be put together with lid on or off and with or without snake... but what would a North African SOuk be without a snake charmer!

All this looks really great!

I am not buying in now, but I shall probably have to get some of this stuff at a later time - a rather large car repair bill (after four attempts to repair the transmission, they finally had to replace the entire thing) is placing heavy restraints on my hobby budget for next couple of months, and I have some other stuff I want to get when I can finally afford something again.

Well, gives me some time to work on stuff I already have, I guess....  ::)

A quick update on Exotic Locations, as I know a lot of people are keen to get their hands on these models.

The plan is to get kits out to all our Indigogo backers by the first week of February. Assuming we do that, we will have retail products for sale on our Trade Stand at Vapnartak in York on 5th February.

If anyone want to pre-order products, and missed the Indigogo campaign, the retail release is available to pre-order at 10% pre-release discount at: http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/exotic-locations (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/exotic-locations)

We are planning to ship pre-orders on 6th February (when we get back from Vapnartak)

In the mean time here is a photo of the Riad Pool painted up and completed with the excellent Fountain casting that David Phipps designed for the range.

I can only respond by adding to my previous statements: Damn, you hit the head on the nail with this range!!

If I had had the necessary funds, I'd have been all over this - as it is now, I'll have to wait and carefully plan what to get in what order.

(I also absolutely adore your shotgun shacks, btw - a very essential addition to any 'down south' setting).

Thanks for the compliments. We are rather fond of this range for many reasons.
- Casablanca is one of our favourite films ever.
- We've had some fantastic holidays in Morrocco both in cities and Ports and also trecking through remote Berber villages, so had some great references to go on.
- These sets were designed with Pulp Alley - Tomb of the Serpent in mind, and that has to be my favourite campaign (so far), for one of the best miniatures games that I've played in the last 35 years of gaming.
- It has so many uses. During development we used it for Pulp Alley, 7TV, WW2, Star Wars and Dr Who!

Glad you like the Shotgun Shack, (we do a 15mm version as well), it was one of the earlier kits that we made, but is one of my favourites. As well as using it with 1920's Gangsters recently I have been using it for 'The Walking Dead'.

Over the last couple of weeks I have had a chance to paint up some of the excellent sculpts that Mark and David made for Exotic Locations.

Here's the Riad Props painted up. I used an image of some real Morrocan cushions to make myself a transfer to do the geometric designs, seemed easier than trying to paint them by hand!

I am looking forward to seeing some photos of sets our backers have put together!

I painted my Locations using household emulsion.
The outside walls were painted with PVA glue and sprinkled with fine sand. When dry I used household white emulsion with a little brick red stirred in to base coat followed by a heavy drybrush of white emulsion.
I did not prime.
It is important to get all the painting done before gluing the floor coverings in place.

It will.... but it will be worth it. These sets are very versatile and can be re-arranged in lots of different ways.

I would not do it all it once, we did not when we were designing it. We have had loads of great games using a single building as the center piece of games table, so if you start with Ricks Place Location and then set dressings, you can be playing a game on it after a weekends model making.

Chris, do you happen to have any close-up shots of a wall with a large lattice window? It looks like they are supposed to have a thin sill on each side. The lattices are a bit smaller than the window though, and I am wondering if there is something meant to keep them in position and fill the slight gap?

Yes, very slightly smaller to allow for thickness of textured paint and pva glue to glue them into position. 2mm square window sill glued to either side of wall.

Instead of being a good little LAFer and working on LPL entries, I finished painting the Exotic Location terra blocks for Rick's Place, Museum, Souk, and Riad. Set dressings are in progress...

That is coming along very nicely.
I do like your doors, I might need to go back over mine and give them the two tone treatment.
Are they just painted with Acrylic?

Any one else started building their exotic locations?

Thanks, some of the innner doors are one tone- although most are painted like the ones shown above. The doors were primed with a reddish auto spray primer, then painted with acrylic. For the brass look I do a layer of dull yellow green, followed by gold. The texture on outer walls is done using the 'Phipps Method' (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=15132.0). His process takes a while but is worth it, and matches the rest of my North Africa terrain.

It will be nice to have some gameable interiors.
