Good source for Bark Chips in the US?
« on: 10 July 2017, 10:34:53 PM »
I've seen a lot of good usage of the larger wood chips, or "bark nuggets" that are often used in Kids' Playground areas as large rocks for wargaming.  One thing I've noticed is that even when searching for bark nuggets specifically, many of them are quite short/thin, while those I see on LAF and elsewhere are quite bulky and heart, an inch or two high/thick.  Am I not using the right keywords, or is there a better source than the big box Home Improvement stores that I just haven't checked out yet?  Dedicated gardening stores?

You want the large bark mulch.  Big pieces (4x2x2 average), stuff actually looks like rock, especially painted up.

Home Depot, and especially Nursery/Landscaping stores.

Can also find it free.  My house in Fish Hawk had a stupid HOA rule that you could ONLY use said mulch, in brown color (Which I defied)

Also, anywhere they are cutting big pine trees, or firewood places.

Probably, craft stores like Hobby Lobby have even bigger pieces?

Never found such here in California, not even at Home Depot.  However, orchid supply companies sell large pieces of cork that can be used for cliff faces.  Just saw a tutorial on just this a day or two ago - sorry, don't remember where.  Don't tell the orchid company your intentions or they might not sell it to you!  Seriously.  Thankfully, my wife is in to orchids and we have a friendly shop around the corner.  $30 US and you can make A LOT of cliffs.
