Looking for some funky dice
« on: 05 July 2017, 07:10:11 AM »
Hey,

I want to do a simple dungeon crawling game with my kids within the next year or so. To make it more accessible to them I want to have special dice with symbols instead of numbers. So a bit like Heroquest. But I don't want to use the Heroquest system as I want it to be slightly different. But dice with weapons and shields and blanks would be awesome.
So what options are there?

I have seen Heroscape, but like Heroquest they use printed dice. And I dislike printed dice...there is also the Dungeons & Dragons board game with some excellent dice but those are horribly expensive if you want them (and I once bought this game for 10 euros and gave it away...).

Do you guys have other options for etched dice for a dungeon crawler, which are available at a good price?

Thanks for helping out!

Have you thought of having dice custom made to your own specification?

EM4 in the UK do them:

I have used the service its quick and easy.

IIRC the old Battlemasters game (Ridderstrijd) had engraved dice (skulls and shields). Maybe these can be found on Ebay

Yes, I have used them several times now...but engraved dice with multiple faces are quite expensive (I think 5+ euros per dice IIRC). But they are on my list of options if nothing pans out.

Thanks! I checked them out, but I don't really like the distribution of symbols (3 skulls, 1 shield, 2 blanks)

But in my search I found these:

These look perfect...but of course they are OOP. DOH!

Not sure what dice  in your previous post ( I cant see the picture) but EM4 sells the Gladiatorius dice seperately. The different colours of dice have different numbers of shields or swords (the white dice are the weakest; the red one the strongest). The attacker need to throw more swords than the defender throw shields.

edit: the dice above don't have blank sides (I think)

From the Conan game:

Not sure if they are already available but the look a lot like the dice from the D&D boardgame (if I have the correct one in mind).

D&D dice:

I don't no where but I have the old D&D game.

Thanks man! Really helpful. I will surely check out those Conan dice and if you are willing to sell those D&D dice I am very interested.
And I have just found the AEG Tomb Dice for a good price (16 euros for 30 OOP dice), so that will give a good basis for my dungeon crawler game.

I think I have a set of those D&D board game dice. If I find them, you can have them.

It's also quite easy to generate your own dice using stickers, etc.  There are "indented D6" dice which you can create stickers for.  I made some custom dice for Furt's excellent Blood on the Sands gladiator game.

I use a stateside company called Gamecrafter.  You basically design up a small sheet of stickers (each image is separate and then they send you printed sheets) and buy some dice...stick 'em on and you're done.

Good you bring these up! I tried this myself in the past, but it failed miserably. I ordered the dice (which are lovely!) and then label stickers which I could print. But unfortunately after printing the ink rubs off in no time. So after I added the stickers to the dice, a lot of ink was already gone. I wasn't impressed and stopped the project right away.
I had thought about using a dedicated printing facility like Gamecrafter or printplaygames.com but was curious about the quality. And according to you the quality is good? Check 8)

Mal,

Here is a picture of the dice I made for Furt's game.  Made/ordered from Gamecrafter.  I think I actually ordered the indented dice elsewhere to get more colour variation?

I created some basic icons and then tried to match some Chessex D6 dice with the indented D6's.  Since the stickers are quite cheap I made sure to have a handful of spares for each one (in case I fudged it).  The quality has thus far been great - haven't had any issues.  Obviously in 10 years time they made harden, crack or flake off?  But so far, so good.

I found a set of the D&D dice, PM me your address and I'll post them your way. There's the coloured ones shown above and some black ones with different icons which I assume are for spells on them.
