Pseudo-Soviet GW Valkyrie

Hey folks!

Last weekend at Action Rheindahlen, I got one of the new GW plastic Valkyries. Rather splendid kit, big and imposing. I also got a bunch of Infinity Kazaks (not related), and decided to paint the Valk in that nice brown-olive-off-white scheme seen on Soviet ground attack planes and choppers - probably because I was (and still am) reading "The Bear Trap" by M.Yousaf and M.Adkin.

Overall, an excellent piece of work, and for once indeed worth the money. It´s huge, bigger than a Land Raider. Most of the parts fit together perfectly, and the only problem that I encountered was with the cockpit - if assembling it "by the book", the pilot console may be too high up to allow for the canopy to sit properly. Additionally, the crew shoulders tend to get in the way - I recommend scraping off some plastic from the glueing area to make them fit more properly.

The rear hatch is a bit wobbly, but closes snugly - I´ll probably add a magnet to keep it shut tightly. The side sliding doors are excellent, though, superb mould-making and concept on those.

I also left off the door gunners to keep to the "Hind" look, in addition to being able to actually fill the ship with a cargo pallet. I don´t really have the intention of getting into GW again, but this one was a nice kit, and a fun build in some 8 hours, overall. It´s not 100% finished in the photos - I´ve since constructed and painted the flying base (pure genius, that one), and printed up a sheet of decals to use on the ship, with an Imperial Eagle clutching a red star. Looks nice, I hope that decal printing stuff works out ok.

Oh yeah - you've definately achieved the 'Hind' look. I can't wait to see the completed version with your flying base and decals

I'll admit to thinking that GW does a whole lot of right these days.

I bought their new blood demons and they're really lovely! I'm impressed.

One huge problem though.. is the price. Outrageous!

Actually, here in Germany, the Valkyrie sells cheaper than the Land Raider, all the while being about twice to 2.5 times the size of the thing, including far better production quality considering parts fit (some of the mould lines, though, are shameful, compared to other mass-market plastic kits). I did particularly like the fact that they hid glueing areas by placing them where plates would meet on an "actual" Valkyrie; unfortunately, there are some areas (notably engine tops) where it would be a total pain to fill up those lines.

that's nice... apart from the las-cannon and the engines, I'd say that would not look out of place with some moderns... maybe turn it into a helicopter...

In that case, i think you're better off buying a 1/35 - 48 Hind and adding a box for transport:)
