Osprey Megiddo and Arab Revolt
« on: 30 July 2009, 06:28:57 AM »
Can anyone comment on whether these 2 Osprey publications are worth getting? Starting to gather interest and reading material for this area in WW1.
Cheers,

I have the "Lawrence & the Arab Revolt" title and it is quite an interesting read.  It only has basic information but it did encourage me to read about the campaigns and actions outside the exploits of Lawrence.

Like most Ospreys it is too broad in content to be a "history" with any depth but has nice illustrations and is a good stating point.  Apart from the colour and period illustrations you'll probably not use it much once you've read it.

If you are not sure see if they are available through the library lending service first.  I'd suggest having a look at them and taking note of some of the books in the bibliography of the topics that are of interest to you.  Then try to get some of those.

Thanks for that. Ospreys are fairly rare in our Libraries unless it is someone personal collection.

I agree about the historic value of Ospreys, but they are a good reference / but good as starting point for amateur historians.
What I most value is their nice colour plates.
they are useful for painting wargames figures.

Thanks for that. Ospreys are fairly rare in our Libraries unless it is someone personal collection.

You can try on the net. Even Osprey has some free pages in their website.

But, there are lots of pages where you can find free dowloads of virtually everything! There are lots of ospreys and other science and history books available in those site like rapidshare etc.

I've found Megiddo a great start if you are interested in the Middle-East. Mind you, this is the later part of the conflict in the Middle-East.

I've the Official Military Operations which to me are the bible for this conflict.

Just watch some of the captions in the 'Arab Revolt' title.  You may be surprised to find that Lawrence was an Arab and Auda an English officer!

Osprey's real strength (like Megiddo, which I have) lies in the illustrations. But they are so god damn expensive which is the reason I more often than not turn to other sources.

If you can find a copy of Megiddo, that is - its OOP according to my usual bookseller.

All the sellers on Amazon must know it is a rarity now as it never seems to sell for less that $ 40 used.
