VSF Setting Ponderings!
« on: 11 October 2009, 08:12:00 PM »
Hi!

Ive decided to have a go at some VSF gaming starting with some Aeronef and skirmishing in 28mm scale but am having a bit of a ponder as to where to set my games. Should they be historically based or should I make up my own setting?

Both options have merit but Im still undecided as to which option to choose so have started a poll on my new blog:

http://captainshrike.blogspot.com/

Any comments and suggestions would be most welcome!

Alas theres not much on it yet but hopefully I will be able to add some bits ad bobs over the coming weeks!

All the best!

A bit of both would probably be the best option for now until you've played for a bit and 'fallen in' with a paticular army or location. You can take historical portions and meld them into a non-historical setting.

What forces are you using, that might help to sway things somewhat.

cheers

I have three separate Aeronef settings, they are;

Luther Arkwright based - See comic books by Brian Talbot.  The models are scratch built and have been great fun to build as well as making me develop a background that fits with Aeronef and Luther Arkwright.

Knights of St John against the Ottoman Empire -  I always wanted to model 16th century lanteens and Galleas and fight the battle of Lepanto.  In this background I can and yet still enjoy VSF!

Aeronef Space 1889 - based on Space 1889, using Aeronef (modified Aeronef rules) and scratch built 1/300th scale ships.

Details of all three are on the Blog - so in my oppinion, base your gaming on something - it does n't matter what - just gives you a guideline to work with and of course inspiration.

Hi!

Im planning on using a British empire style force and pirates/anarchists/evil villains for the time being but hope to add some more great powers types as time allows.

All the best!

In that case - try the Michael Moorcroft book 'Something of the skies' - it also uses the British and Pirates or anarchist background.

Warlord of the Air. Along with the rest of the Bastable trilogy (The Steel Tsar and The Land Leviathan) it has great ideas for all sorts of Victorian SF, although I think they were more rightly Edwardian.

As for settings, I'm hitching my VSF stuff to the Stargate scenario I've already started playing about with. Massive scope for exploration and possible bad guys there. Also does away with the need to build giant wood-and-brass spaceships, which suits me fine.  :)

I set my games in Africa, which gives me a wide scope in terms of countries, whilst still remaining plausable (just about every major power can come up with a good reason for being in Africa).
I told you so. You damned fools.

I'm just starting 'properly' with VSF, instead of having it as an occassional location for time-travellers from other settings, and perhaps because of this I have a bit of a whacky take on it, but I like Atlantis as a setting. Nautili, Aeronefs, strange energy weapons, martians, dinosaurs, and oodles of mad scientists making crazy devices, in any kind of topography you like - deserts, mountains, swamps, jungles, cities (both inhaboted and ruined)... what could possibly go wrong?

Hi!

Thanks for the suggestions thus far!

Ive started work on a steamtank I had from my old Leviathan project. I dont thik it really fits in with a British Imperial vehicle but could be nice for a evil genius or indeed one of the far eastern powers!

Ive still got a load of work to do to it but its rather a nice little kit...

I've played with someone who used that very vehicle for his Prussian forces

Oddly, most oddly, I was wondering about the name "Iron Dragon" for a Prussian tank. If ever I saw a tank that deserved the name "Iron Dragon", it's that one!

Oh, ,,Eisendrache'' according to my multi-lingual google-fu.
