I recently painted up some Mantic minis from the sci-fi advent calendar and I used non-primer spray on them with no problem. It wasn't the Halfords spray I used but one I got from Hobbycraft, Montana Gold is the brand.

Halfords still do a black primer spray which for some reason they call "Bodyshop primer". Bought to use on miniatures, but I've not tried it yet.

I've been using the bodyshop primer on minis for years.

I seem to recall I first got it because it was the only one they had in stock that day, and I preferred the finish it gave compared to their 'normal' one I'd previously been using. More matte I think.
