Sort of a new project.
« on: March 14, 2023, 10:04:23 AM »
Just before Xmas I did a bit of thinking about my wargaming hobby, specifically my figure collection.

Now my favorite period is the Napoleonic Wars and the peninsular war within that. In the approximately nine years since I actively started gaming I have amassed a "completed" British force of 12 infantry battalions, 5 cavalry regiments and 10 artillery pieces plus command. I also have 5 Portuguese infantry battalions and 1 artillery piece. A further 3 British infantry battalions and Hussar regiments are in the being done or to do list.

All this means that I can put on some great games at the fantastic club I go to, where I can make use of the other member's extensive selection of French figures. However should I wish to play a historic game away from this environment I'm stuffed.

This is all just a lead up to me deciding before Christmas that I need to do some French "oh the horror! :)" So onto the pressie list went requests for French figures. The plan was for a brigade/regiment of 3 line battalions, an attached light cavalry regiment and a battery of foot artillery.
So one Perry plastic box, extra command sprue, mounted colonels and some kindly donated Victrix figures, to make up the numbers in the 3rd battalion, and I was at this position:

A trip to Hammerhead the other weekend saw me pick up a box of Perry Chasseurs à Cheval and some casualty figures. Unfortunately the 8lb foot artillery I wanted were out of stock so I still have to order them.

The plan is to assemble them all then prime them in a one go so they are ready to paint as soon as I finish the British 43rd Light Infantry that are half way to completion.

So ramble over and lots more to paint going forward this year, now just to finish the Tudor figures for the club's Kett's Rebellion game at Diceni in Norwich this April.

Cheers Tony

Looks like a good start.. 20 + Battalions against 3 Battalions it looks like always an easy win for the Allies  lol
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

2019 Painting Challenge :

figures painted: 57

You must have my pal has-been's dice rolling hands. It's legendary. You just have say "Whatever you do, don't throw a 1," and he will.

Your basing interests me. 3 bases per unit.

1. How do you go about representing square or assault column Vs march column.

2. I can see the Grenadier figures out on the right of the unit’s right, but on the other flank, I cant see anything that are notable voltiguers, is that because you have the light infantry coy out in front?

I am just starting out with my project and have 2 x 80mm bases per unit, with 20 figs ranked in two lines, the end figures of the line are Grenadiers and voltiguers respectfully, but I am not 100% convinced and would rather have an effective basing plan now than have to re-base in the future - hence my interest in how others are going about it.

I really like the command base with the mounted officers.

Hi Norm,
The figures are based for the Shako ruleset hence 18 figs in a standard battalion, some large battalions may have four bases, but we also use Black Powder occasionally.

If you look closer on the unit's left flank you will see the two end figures have voltigeur shoulder wings. The separately based lights are used to represent the lights when deployed as a skirmish screen.

The mounted officer helps to identify the first battalion of a regiment. The base was a custom order from Warbases.

As for formations see the attached picture.

I also have info on basing on my blog Here and Here
