Do you want an easy way into a boardgame?
« on: 31 December 2023, 07:35:25 AM »
I do both boardgaming and figure gaming and would not normally bring a boardgame to this site …. However;

I have a boardgame on the table that looks perfect as the into type game to get an easy understanding of basic boardgaming principles.

I know there are figure gamers who fancy a dabble at a proper wargame boardgame, but are wary of investing in something that may never even get to the table. If so the Velikiye Luki boardgame may interest you.

I have played it twice and feel that it would serve as a good into. It is a two player game, but both my plays have been solo and it is has been fine.

I have a full write-up on my blog if any of this is of interest (I have no commercial link to the game). LINK

Cool; very reminiscent of the hex-based wargames that were all the rage back in the eighties. I used to have several of those, but they were complicated and slow to play.

How does this compare to GDW fare from back then?
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Some of the GDW titles were what we would today call easy play and others were meatier, so too much of a mixed bag for a broad compare, but i would say that this is more accessible than anything put out by GDW, other than the mentioned Battle for Moscow.

GDW did put out several 8 and 12 page rules designs, which though heavier than VK, not excessively so.

GDW did produce the 120 series (120 counters playable in 120 minutes) and I understand that Compass Games are planning to release three of these titles in the future.
