T’penny ha’penny models
« on: 18 June 2024, 06:59:40 AM »
Trying to find a quick and easy way of producing a dozen or so 1/72 aircraft, I came across the contributions of John Gypson on the ‘juniorgeneral’ site.

https://juniorgeneral.org/index.php/figure/designer/John%20Gypson

For the uninitiated, the site is home to a variety of printable paper wargames miniatures, in top down or 2d format. Where John Gipson differs from the norm is his ‘2 & 1/2d’ models of First war, Interwar and Second war aircraft. Hence ‘T’penny Ha’penny models’.
Colour printed and spray glued to artists mounting board, they can be assembled into reasonable facsimiles at minimal cost, basic tools and a bit of thought.
Here are an AP-1 and I-16 - my preference is to paint the ‘raw’ card edges black.

Seconded - very effective and bookmarked for later perusals!

Really great resource

and totally agree - the black edging of the cardstock really helps with definition.

My thanks - I’m looking at a one-off VBCW air game, and need a dozen or so aircraft. 1/72 plastics could set me back a considerable sum for a single event.

Be aware, John Gypson is the only contributor I have found who does this, others produce 2d side view only.

Very nice! Do you paint the underside black as well?

These look good - certainly some of the better artwork on Junior General.

I’m fortunate to have a handy framing service which puts off-cuts out for sale - I try to get a card of the appropriate colour ;-)

Yes, his WW1 aircraft are more ‘pixels’, but his interwar onward are more ‘artistic’. Don’t know if there is a particular piece of software used, or if he is simply that talented.
