What's the status on future University of Edinburgh game books?
« on: 02 September 2024, 05:33:58 PM »
A few years back, The University of Edinburgh released three historical setting companion books for LR and TMWWBK:

Lion Rampant: The Crusader States
Lion Rampant: A Viking in the Sun
The Men Who Would Be Kings: The Last Samurai Rebellion

I think the last of those came out in 2022. Are there plans for any more?

Have you thought about asking them?
They'd be in a much stronger position to give you an answer.

To be honest, I'm surprised they did that in the first place. I'm sure it was a much welcomed money maker for them, but there's also the issue of where it sits in their inventory.
I can only assume they have/had a keen gamer on the editorial team.

Curiousity leads to googling about...

Daniel Mersey
He is the University of Edinburgh's first ever Game Designer in Residence (2021-2022).

Nice finds, Cat.

So maybe this line was just a temporary run while Mersey had residency? I wonder if there are plans to continue...maybe bring in another game designer?

It depends entirely on who applies for a fellowship, and has their proposal accepted.  I haven't come across any direct follow on after Mersey, but it could certainly happen.

It was through this fairly broad ranging program: Knowledge Exchange Fellowship offered by the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Edinburgh.

There's certainly plenty of valid research to do in conjunction with game publishing, and the two intertwine with supporting researchers in their careers.

I did not realize that Dan was no longer the Game Designer in Residence there.

Thanks for the update.

Most fellowships are for one, maybe two, year stints.

But having found out this was a serious bit of research, picked up The Last Samurai Rebellion book today at my FLGS.

Boshin/Satsuma is bubbling on the back burner as a possible project to dive into next year.  Will see where the Muse leads come next June...

I am pretty sure most folks would never accuse me of being a scholar!   lol
