US Navy ship colours
« on: 19 January 2010, 07:21:59 PM »
Can anyone help me with colours for US Navy ships in the late 19th century?

I've seen some pictires of ships from the Spanish-American war with white hulls and red(?) funnels, but I can't make out the colour for the above-deck structures and turrets. Any help with confirmation of ship colours would be greatly appreciated.

In the case of USS Oregon, at least, pre-war she had a white hull with all superstructure, turrets, funnels, etc. painted buff.  Funnels were black topped and 'crowsnests' were white.  All decks were natural wood.  Under the hull was the usual red.  During the war, she was repainted in gray while post war she reverted to the white/buff scheme, although this time her turrets and mounts were also white.

Stay away from white!

Haze grey and underway!
