Citadel Miniatures 1987
« on: 17 May 2025, 10:39:20 AM »
I wonder if somebody can help ? I have included a link to the Solegends page showing the mail order catalogue for 1987 showing ,"Machines of Destruction". A few items have the term ,"unrealeased" next to them ?
Can anybody tell me what that exactly means ? Take the Chronicle Chaos Cannon for example, never seen one on fleabay, extremely rare but some people do have them. Where did they obtain them from ?
 One off promotions,competition winners,lucky gits ?

I think limited release might be a more appropriate description. All sorts of stuff was available through calling the mail order trolls back in the day. Plus, Lenton's a bit leaky given the number of former employees with large collections.

It could also mean 'not publicly released'. GW was in the habit of allowing it's designers to experiment and cast up all sorts of little models, test pieces and oddities (as long as it was GW and Warhammer related) - these pieces would be cast in limited numbers and given away to employess, either Lenton or visiting from shops, or sometimes as Gamesday freebies; they would also disappear quickly from GW (multiples usually being taken as often as possible) then magically appear on Ebay a short while afterwards as a limited edition at silly prices. I was given a piece many years ago that way - the Necron scarab on dissecting table model - sadly no longer in my possession.

I recall that lots of 'unreleased' figures were sold in shops like Games Master and Mac's Models in Edinburgh; they'd just turn up in blister packs sometimes.

For example, I've got loads of the 'unreleased' 80s savage orcs with separate arms at the bottom of this page; I bought them in labelled blister packs in a shop.

God yeah, I had those, they were awful weren't they? So wooden in their poses, like a Playmobil dude.

Wait is that a particularly hard to find one? I have at least two, possibly three kicking around in my bits box. I thought they were part of the SKULLZ program.

I have that "Orc Stone Engine" model, but it was labeled as a "Man Mangler" (I think) when I bought it . . .

Yeah, they make no sense whatsoever with their arms on (though the bodies are quite nice basic Perry orcs). I painted one up about 10 years ago, but his arms have since fallen off. I had vague plans to equip the others with Frostgrave gnoll arms, I think.

I'm not sure how rare it is - I got given one by a friend of mine who used to work at GW and he was given a few freebies (I think they were all invited to fill a small bag from bins of figures and stuff) during a staff tour of the factory. There are probably loads of figures like that kicking around from the 80's and 90's era GW.

The Collecting Citadel Miniatures wiki classifies the Chaos cannon as a limited release, although it is named as the Chaos Seige Cannon. So you may stumble across one.

If your talking about the Chronicle Cannon its also known as the,"Ass Cannon".

Yup; definitely Skullz  :)

I've got one in my Necron army, which is completely built (and converted) out of 2nd ed metals. It's based as an objective counter.

I remember it being on the Skullz pages in WD, but I never had the means to collect enough points to get one at the time. But I poured over the pages obsessively anyway ;)

There might be room for one more though...  ;)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...
