Good history of the 1864-65 seige of Petersburg?
« on: June 17, 2025, 04:26:57 PM »
I'm looking for a good history of this campaign. I've tended to overlook it in favor of the usual 1862-1863 battles, but there seems to have been a number of comparatively open fights on the open flank with the various attempts to cut the CSA railroads. I recently realized that Grant didn't have overwhelming numbers during the period that Sheridan was operating in the Shenandoah, yet still kept pressure up. Once Sheridan returned with VI Corps and the cavalry, the writing was on the wall.

A good history available on Kindle would be the absolute best, but I'll pitch something from my shelves to make room for an actual book.
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Richmond Redeemed by Sommers is an older history and A Campaign of Giants by Greene has just had the 2nd volume in a trilogy published, I enjoyed the first volume and have the 2nd but not started it yet.

Thank you. Just picked up a copy of McPherson's "Ordeal by Fire" and will start on Greene's book after that.

Petersburg is actually the scenario I'm currently working on. (More like "stalled on" - wanna help?)

I went for:
- the Osprey by Ron Field for an easy orientation - seems pretty good;
- Noah Andre Trudeau's "The Last Citadel" for a thorough academic treatment in a single volume.
