Ikea display shelves look for suggestions
« on: June 26, 2025, 07:26:25 PM »
Hello
I know that i asked it before..but now i almost finally decided to do it...in a few days a electrician guy will come to set up lights and i have to guide it accordingly..i already bought glass shelves for my Ikea Billy but i still have some doubts about the optimum distance from each shelf (height)...ill display mainly 28mm armies..19 century and colonials..so with some units equipped with lances and even some camels..the rest would be infantry , natives and colonials..
.surfing trough the various posts on the subject and trying to detect measurements from the picts i m thinking about distances that could allow you to put my hand inside to get trays of your units...maybe 15 cm? 20mm between each shelf.. even more..or maybe less? lights (strips of leds)  from front or from behind) or from both?
there are some examples here:

thanks again for your precious suggestions

You are going to want a good 15 cm between shelves if you are ever going to reach for figures on the back rank without toppling everything in front.   Mounted and  upright spears/pikes/standard bearers easily get to 10 cm in size.  Have at least one shelf with 20 cm clearance.  You lose some density in display storage, but you will find the extra handling room to be very valuable in the end.

Many tanks Mick !! those are right to the point , excellent suggestions...i'll follow them ..By the way , may ask you, also, what do you think about lightning...is it better that every shelf will be provided with his  led stripe ?..from front or from behind?..we are talking about glass shelves but i suppose that, once covered with based 28mm miniatures, shoulder to shoulder, or even full units  placed on trays, the light would not filter easily.

I just have nice wattage led at the top.  glass shelves give a bit of bleed but the bottom shelves can get a bit dark.  if i could i would put another at the middle.

OK perfect
Your "large" 20 cm shelf is on the bottom or on the top of the cabinet?

both top and bottom have at least  20 cm clearance, all the others are 15. shelves located above eye level are less useful as you cannot see the figures well.  the view is mostly of their bases, so my top shelf is probably closer to 30cm maybe more, as the top has a bit of recessed headroom not visible from the front as the receptacle for the lights are hidden by a plate of wood that is much deeper than the ceiling.  i didn’t install the very top most shelf nor the bottom most.

Also, make sure no UV hits your display. Want all your colours to turn pastel? UV will do that for you.

Other than that, you’re off to a great start!
