[Kickstarter] Model Painting Specialized Custom Brushes
« on: June 07, 2025, 05:11:44 PM »
Hello everyone! We are taking a break from decals and are trying our hand at launching a new campaign! Our goal is to create a series of paintbrushes with wooden handles that are easy and comfortable to use. Right now the campaign is set in its pre-launch phase but once it launches you should be able to click the link below and arrive at the full campaign page once it is ready.

In this project we are working with suppliers of paint brushes to create custom sized wooden miniature painting brushes for hobbyists who wish to have control and quality in their painting tasks at an affordable price. Our brushes have had the bristles set with our custom lengths and sizes in order to fit the needs of miniature painters painting at scales of 20 mm or higher. Each comes with a plastic protective covering and a metal lid to protect the bristles.

Our brushes will be made with wooden handles that are designed to feel comfortable and balanced in your hand, no matter how long you’re painting for. The handles are crafted shorter and wider to give you a solid grip and will be a sturdy tool that is easy to grasp and hold on to. Whether you’re working on a fine details, applying base coats, or drawing free hand designs, our plan is to let the brushes offer the stability and control you need.

We’ve tested different nylon bristles and found ones that are durable, flexible, and resistant to shedding. The bristles are soft, yet strong and they will not shed, bend, or break. You won’t have to worry about stray hairs leaving unwanted marks, and they’re tough enough to withstand even the most rigorous strokes without bending or breaking. These bristles will maintain their form, ensuring you get a smooth, evenly covered, streak-free finish with every single use.

Each prototype brush has been tested for many hours to assure quality and we’ve paid attention to every detail to ensure that our brushes perform well from the first stroke to the last. Our aim is to have brushes that last over long periods of painting.

With your support, we’ll be able to bring Model Painting Specialized Custom Brushes into the hands of miniature painters everywhere, so you can enjoy the joy of painting without common frustrations that come with expensive tools. Your pledges will help us create these brushes with the best materials we've found and keep them at high standards with affordable prices.

Brush Pledge Options

With the following brush pledge options you will find different lengths and shapes for each head of bristles on every brush. All brushes can be used for different functions and can create various results that will fit your painting needs.

Short Liner Brush

This brush has finely shaped bristles that allow for accuracy and is perfect for freehand designs. The paint loaded on to this brush and its short length allow best for getting into detail work like lines and intricate details.

We used ours to paint a Fluer-de-lys design on a shield. The Flat Base Brush was used for painting the larger area as a liner brush would take too long to fill in a larger area.

Medium Liner Brush

This liner brush is a little longer than the Short Liner Brush and can also be used for freehand designs, but the longer the brush the more paint can be loaded on and allow for better flow when working with longer lines and larger areas.

In our example we drew vertical and horizontal lines to create checkers and then used them same liner brush to fill in each opposing square.

Long Liner Brush

This liner brush is best to keep a line straight and steady for when you want to try and drag long strokes across an area. For our project we found that using it to create diagonal or straight lines across an area worked best.

Like the Medium Liner Brush, we drew lines, but drew them crisscrossing at diagonal angles. This created a diamond look effect which we filled in with the same liner brush.

Filbert Brush

This type of brush is good for catching and filling in corners and edges if you want to do a solid basecoat. This is useful for painting into areas with curves or dips. It works great for filling in areas and can be used to blend larger surfaces.

With our shields we applied a simple base coat. If there are edges that curve and stick up then it is easier to use this brush drag the paint in and around them.

Flat Brush

This brush is wide and used for many applications. It can fill in larger sections and will prevent streak marks that smaller sized brushes might leave behind when trying to fill in an area. It is best used to cover larger surfaces that need a base coat.

A simple application was used in our example. With just a few strokes over the shield we were able to cover the surface area easily.

Multi-Purpose Round Brush

This brush gives you maximum control for different detailing and coverage. The shape allows for bold marks and strokes and is great for covering both smaller and larger sections. It is a versatile tool that can be used for thin line or detailed work, as well as filling in base coats over areas.

In our example we have used this brush to line out flames, or perhaps the sun, in yellow on a shield after base coating the entirety of the shield in red.

Angle Brush

The angle brush lets you work well with cutting along edges and getting in at straight lines. They can be used to create precise, angled strokes and you can modify and vary the thickness of each stroke.

On the shield we painted we drew painted base coats at an angle to create an easy, straight diamond over an initial color, which was also applied using the same brush.

Split Brush

This brush can be used to drag across surfaces to create a sort of shattered, distressed appearance. It can also be used to apply gradients and layers, meshing paints together to create a nice blend.

In our project we used it to create a weathered looking effect - a shield that has been scratched and damaged through use and tear over time.

Small Flat Brush

This brush is good for drawing straight edges and flat lines. It is a smaller version of the Flat Brush and can be used the same was as its larger flat version. However, we find its used best when you want to draw wide lines or stripes such as the type you see in plaid or tartan.

On our shield we used the same brush to base coat and then painted a simple plaid inspired pattern over top of it. Then we turned the brush on its skinnier side and painted in smaller lines.

Small Filbert Brush

Just as the Filbert brush, this smaller version is good for working at corner and edges. Using the brush to get in at details and edges works great and you can turn and bend the bristles and brushes with this smaller version to get some curved effects to produce ovals and tear drops.

We went and drew ourselves circles of blood and then dabbed paint to make it look like the top of our shield is dripping blood.

Dimensions

Each brush length from the bristle tip to the wood handle end is approximately 160 mm long. Each brush head bristle width and length are listed in the dimensions chart below.
