Chinese for Boxer / Taipeng Rebellions
« on: August 05, 2025, 04:47:44 PM »
Hi all,

Looking for info on figure comparison for Chinese forces in the Boxer / Taipeng Rebellions.  I have a mass of the old Foundry models and looking for reinforcements. My question for the hive mind is how are the miniatures from Crusader (metal) and Wargames Atlantic (plastic), and do they match the old Foundry range size-wise in the same units?

If anyone has photos, that would be really useful. I have searched the net but haven't come up with anything.

Thanks in advance for sharing your insight/experience.

I do not have picts and my figures are  in the cellar but i can confirm you that WA plastics are , a little bigger but, in my opinion, quite compatible with OG or Foundry ..no idea about the Crusader miniatures

On the other hand , as we are on the same boat cause I also always look for small  Colonial 28mm minis , that’s to say compatible with OG and WF, i can strongly suggest you to have a look at the Redoubt catalogue ; it’s a manufacture known for their very big 28mm castings , BUT their last three issued ranges (Boer War, Russian-Japanese War and Boxer Rebellion ) are totally different , they seem to have been  designed by another sculptor and are in smaller size, perfectly compatible , both in style and dimensions, with OG and Wargame Foundry.you could find nice minis, sold individuallly , including  less known subjects such  as Austrian Machinegun and various types of Boxers/Chineese fighters. Their Russian Japanese War range is also useful for Boxer Rebellion.

Am currently building a 28mm Chinese army for the Taiping Rebellion, using Parkfield Miniatures with a smattering of Tiger Miniatures.
I've found the WA plastic set not much use for anything other than Boxers, as the cut of clothing is wrong for most Imperial Banner troops.

Tiger Miniatures are a bit taller than the Parkfield ones, but as I'm only using the former for guard units, I can get away with it. Wouldn't mix them in the same unit though.

No idea about size compatibility of the Foundry and Crusader ranges.

Thanks for the insight....still need someone with experience of the Foundry Chinese range, and if these newer ranges actually work with them.

I’ve happily used Foundry Chinese alongside more recent ranges such as Victorious Miniatures, Artizan and Ironclad Miniatures, as well as Redoubt Boxers - they’re all pretty compatible though the Foundry regulars are really a bit too early uniform-wise for 1900

Here's a picture I just took of 4 different manufacturers that make Qing minis. From left to right: Parkfield, Foundry, Wargames Atlantic, Gringo 40s

Ye gods, that Gringo figure’s a right bruiser! Scale creep? More like scale gallop!

Many thanks Rochejaquelein for the photo, as that helps a lot.

Wow, the Gringo mini looks huge....what scale is he, 40mm?

Not sure about the Wargames Atlantic model, as he looks too big to match my massive Foundry collection. I know on the Wargames Atlantic digital models I print them out smaller, so they git in.

Any info on the Crusader Minis Chinese???

Found another supplier of 28mm Boxers - Ironclad Miniatures

https://www.ironcladminiatures.com/ourshop/cat_970088-28mm-Boxer-Rebellion.html

Have ordered some, the Kansu Braves look ideal for Yung-ying battalions in the Taiping rebellion. No idea about size comparison yet.

Some of those figures are clearly Martin Baker sculpts.

So my Ironclad Chinese arrived, they are a bit taller than Parkfield, but smaller than Tiger Miniatures:

The Gringo40s figures are admittedly bigger than other ranges (although individual figures can vary considerably) BUT as you can see in that comparison photo, a lot of it is down to the fact they usually have very thick bases. So if you give them thinner bases and other ranges thicker bases, the difference is evened out somewhat. That said I would probably only mix them with the biggest of other ranges.
Gringo40s, however, have the distinction of generally being amazing sculpts.

Ironclad are lovely figures, they mix well with my assorted Foundry, Redoubt and other Boxers - their Kansu Braves are equally good and match well with Crusader.
